Kongregate, a leading developer of mobile free-to-play games, today announced that SpongeBob’s Idle Adventures, an idle game based on the popular Nickelodeon franchise, SpongeBob SquarePants, is available globally for download on both Google Play and Apple App stores.

Other characters range from prominent staples such as Squidward and Plankton to more secondary figures from the series, like Grandma SquarePants and Fred the fish. Also included on the roster are alternate versions of certain characters. For example, Birthday SpongeBob, who appears largely the same as the game's titular character save for the fact that he sports a birthday hat. The presence of these alternate characters is explained in SpongeBob's Idle Adventures' main story.
SpongeBob's Idle Adventures kicks off with SpongeBob and Patrick playing with the vortex machine, an invention created by Sandy Cheeks in the SpongeBob SquarePants television show that opens portals to other dimensions. In SpongeBob's Idle Adventures, however, the entirety of Bikini Bottom is caught up in the resulting catastrophe. Players will travel alongside the game's familiar characters through various different universes, encountering alternate versions of the cast while trying to achieve the ultimate goal of returning to Bikini Bottom proper. Potentially, this allows the app's developers to continually introduce new locations and characters from the series with the inclusion of events.
Rebuilding the vortex machine is achieved by completing quests to move from one dimension to another as well as leveling up characters to higher ranks. Completing a new dimension also earns rewards in the form of unlockable chests, which can also be purchased from the game's store for real-world currency, although SpongeBob's Idle Adventures itself is free-to-play. Premium currency can also be collected at a much slower rate through normal gameplay. For the time being, it isn't exactly clear how many different levels are available to play or how long it will take to beat the main story in SpongeBob's Idle Adventures, but the repeating formula of the story's progression should offer Nickelodeon fans a substantial amount of gameplay to work through.
