'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' Has Featured Nicktoons In It Before 'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl' Was a Thing

NickHeads were surprised to see a full-blown platform fighter called Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl revealed a few months back. The upcoming title takes heavy inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. series, using similar controls, battle mechanics, and even aesthetics — but with popular Nickelodeon characters.

What we have now is essentially a Nickelodeon Smash Bros., but funnily enough Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had Nicktoons in it before Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was actually a thing. This is all thanks to Smash Ultimate's Stage Builder tool.

We have been featuring the interesting and impressive creations found in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's shared content section since way back when the game first dropped. One thing that has definitely been consistent since players gained access to the tool is Nickelodeon creations.

Player created stages have been designed around all manner of things, such as full Dragon Ball Z scenes recreated to Smash Bros. series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, sitting at his desk watching the players duke it out.

But one theme players see every single time they look through the section is SpongeBob SquarePants stages. From the very beginning, creative types were constructing backdrops depicting the sponge himself, the city of Bikini Bottom, Patrick Star, and everything in between.

Classic SpongeBob memes have even shared as created stages. The creations featured below are just some of the stages players would have seen by perusing the section this morning.

SpongeBob remains an extremely popular subject for Smash Bros. Ultimate created stages. That being said, all kinds of other Nickelodeon IPs have been used as inspiration for custom battlefields.

Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome from The Fairly OddParents, Invader Zim, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you name it. Several of the characters and franchises we currently see in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl have already made their way into Smash Bros. thanks to crafty stage creators.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is set for release on October 5. With Nicktoons being represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate through created stages over these past few years, it almost feels like we've come full circle now with a Smash-type game featuring Nickelodeon characters launching soon.

In fact, staff at Nickelodeon Animation Studio even play annual Super Smash Bros. tournaments, and in 2018, Nick sponsored the Super Smash Bros. Shell Showdown featuring Rise of the TMNT!

They're no longer just stages; the Nicktoons are here to kick some butt themselves.
