Niki López Creates Short For Nickelodeon's Intergalactic Shorts Program

Niki López, the co-creator of Nickelodeon's hit CG-animated preschool series Santiago of the Seas, has revealed that she recently produced a short for Nickelodeon's Intergalactic Shorts Program!

Speaking to Forbes, López said: "Recently, I completed production on a short I created for Nickelodeon's Intergalactic Shorts Program. That by far is one of my favorite creative experiences in animation. From the get-go, the development execs were immensely supportive and excited by my vision for this story. Through that support, I was able to tap into some stellar talent that helped heighten the overall quality of the project. There’s so much more I wish to share, but I guess we’ll have to wait until these shorts are officially released to the public!"

Niki López is currently Creator/EP/Showrunner at Nickelodeon Animation Studio. López is a Puerto Rican storyteller and artist working in the animation industry. She is the creator and executive producer of Nick Jr.’s award-winning preschool series, Santiago of the Seas. López was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She attended Ringling College of Art and Design to earn a BFA in Illustration.

Her animation career began as a “Nicktern” for Nickelodeon Animation Studios, where she got hired shortly after as a production assistant on Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and then as a color designer on The Fairly OddParents, Harvey Beaks, and Glitch Techs. In 2018, López was selected as one of Variety’s 10 Animators to Watch and was featured in Animation Magazine’s Rising Stars of Animation for their April 2020 issue. Niki López recently joined Forbes to talk about her path from intern to showrunner in animation, which you can read in full here!

A range of Santiago of the Seas merchandise, including toys, books, bedroom accessories and clothing is now available, including at amazon.com/nickelodeon.
