The Loud Librarian is back - and she's got unbridled enthusiasm for the library!
It's a troubling time in America right now, with books being banned and vital funding for libraries being decimated. What the world needs now is a superhero.. no wait, even better, a librarian, and Nickelodeon alum Lori Beth Denberg is here to answer the call!
In partnership with We Believe and EveryLibrary and in celebration of National Library Week, Denberg reprises her iconic All That character The Loud Librarian for a pro-library, anti-book banning PSA!
In the video, below, Denberg explains that everyone's fundamental right to read and learn is being endangered by funding cuts and book banning, and how the library is vital for providing internet access in rural communities, interspersed with her telling library visitors her classic catchphrase, "QUIET! THIS IS A LIBRARY!".
She’s back from the ’90s, and she’s getting loud about the threats to our public and school libraries! But for the first time ever, her voice might not be loud enough — we need your help! Your favorite Loud Librarian is back with some vital information on how to raise your voice during National Library Week and beyond, and join the chorus of parents, families, teachers, and students who support the freedom to learn. Below you’ll find actions you can take whether you have just a couple minutes today, some more time tomorrow, or are ready to work together in the effort to protect libraries.
Libraries are where visitors can study topics from all sorts of views, where students can find somewhere quiet to study, and where children fall in love with reading, but despite all that, books are still being banned.
Book banning may seem like a thing of the past, but in the 2023-2024 school year, PEN America counted more than 10,000 book bans in public schools, and has documented nearly 16,000 book bans in public schools nationwide since 2021, a number not seen since the Red Scare McCarthy era of the 1950s. And everywhere, it is the books that have long fought for a place on the shelf that are being targeted. Books by authors of color, by LGBTQIA+ authors, by women. Books about racism, sexuality, gender, history and more. PEN America pushes back against censorship and the intolerance and exclusion that undergird it.
In the video, Denberg explains how to viewers can fight for their libraries by getting LOUD, by going to school board meetings, town hall meetings, writing to their representatives, and by voting.
