Nickelodeon Launches 'Nick Helps' Pro-Social Initiative

As part of Nickelodeon’s commitment to recognize real kids who are making a difference in the world, the network is launching Nick Helps, a new year-round pro-social initiative which aims to inspire kids to make the world a more positive place, and which will provide resources and services to partnering organizations that are dedicated to improving educational outcomes for children.

Beginning this month, Nickelodeon is teaming up with non-profit organizations including Jumpstart, WCS and Canine Companions For Independence to mobilize kids to participate in service projects.

On NickHelps.com, the digital hub for the Nick Helps initiative, users can find tips and information on ways to get involved in the community, and well as more information about the campaign and its partners.

As part of Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards 2019, Nickelodeon asked viewers around the world "How Do You Want to Help?". Voters heard the question, and Nickelodeon has heard their answer! Nickelodeon viewers want to help animals, and Nick Helps will help them help! Viewers can get started by grabbing your fan badge on NickHelps.com to help spread the word. Viewers are encouraged to talk to their families and friends about joining in. For one full year, Nickelodeon will connect viewers with projects, ideas, and organizations that will help viewers and your families be champions for good. Users can keep checking back at NickHelps.com for all the ways they can help, and together, we can make a real change. Nick is just getting started!

To kick off the Nick Helps movement, Nickelodeon partnered with Para Los Niños school in Los Angeles, California and Jumpstart to host two in-the-community events that are sure to bring smiles to hundreds of children.

In partnership with Para Los Niños school, Nickelodeon employees and talent headed down to the Los Angeles school to paint a radical Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-inspired mural for los niños!

In partnership with Jumpstart, Nickelodeon hosted a volunteer event for staff in their animation studios in Burbank, California on Monday, March 18th, 2019 to benefit the organization.

“Jumpstart is an instrumental partner on Nickelodeon’s Beyond the Backpack campaign, which addresses kindergarten readiness. We are thrilled that many Nickelodeon employees participated in the event, and stuffed more than 700 supply-filled backpacks for young kids in Jumpstart Los Angeles programs.” — Jean Margaret Smith, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Public Affairs and Administration.

These supply-filled PAW Patrol and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backpacks will provide Jumpstart children in Southern California with the resources they need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. Thanks to the Beyond the Backpack initiative, Jumpstart are not only able to reach the children they serve; they are also able to provide parents from underserved communities with tips and activities that are critical to building kindergarten readiness in their own homes.

Jumpstart said in a statement that they are truly grateful for this opportunity and that they value Nickelodeon’s ongoing generosity as a proud partner since 2014.

Nick Helps builds on Nickelodeon's previous pro-social campaigns, including The HALO Movement and HALO Awards, The Big Green Help and The Big Help.

Key Club International and Nickelodeon Announce 2018 Nickelodeon HALO Movement Finalists

Once again, Key Club International and its long-standing partner Nickelodeon teamed up to award Nickelodeon HALO grants to Key Clubs with inspiring projects to help people in their schools and communities. During its second round of the 2017-18 year, the Nickelodeon HALO Movement received outstanding applications from 63 Key Clubs.

Thanks to your votes, 10 Key Clubs have collectively earned US$13,451 to fund service projects ranging from raising money for rare disease research, to sending sanitation supplies to schools in Guatemala, to giving kids of all abilities the chance to play together.

The 2018 Nickelodeon HALO Movement finalists are:

Beaver Dam High School Key Club in Wisconsin, which will provide hospitals with books to distribute to parents of young children in a community where 40 percent of school-aged kids meet federal poverty guidelines, and where English-as-a-second-language education is needed.

Cypress Woods High School Key Club in Texas, whose members will fill backpacks with food for students in need at a nearby elementary school where 74 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.

Enloe Magnet High School Key Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, which plans to host a food-themed carnival to raise awareness and donations for the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, an organization that feeds about 50,000 adults and children each month.

McLoughlin High School Key Club in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, which will use its grant to expand its “Friday Food Bags” program — which gives weekend meals to students in need — to two additional schools in its district.

Millburn High School Key Club in New Jersey, whose members will host a 5K “Color Run” to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the American Cancer Society.

Mingus Union High School Key Club in Cottonwood, Arizona, which will use its grant money to provide low-income students with personal cleansing items and school supplies through its “Hope Chest.”

Sturgis Charter Public School East Key Club in Hyannis, Massachusetts, which is collaborating with Key Club partner Squads Abroad to send supplies to schools in Guatemala to help with sanitation, hygiene and nutrition.

Tecumseh High School Key Club in Michigan, which will host a dance to raise awareness of, and money for research of, airway defects in infants, such as laryngomalacia.

Waupun Area Junior/Senior High School Key Club in Wisconsin, whose members collect toys, books, art supplies, clothes and gas gift cards during the holidays for families of kids at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Wheaton North High School Key Club in Illinois, which plans to add a wheelchair-accessible treehouse to the area’s “sensory playground” for kids of all abilities, with a special focus on playtime for kids with autism.

Congratulations to all of the 2018 finalists!

Nickelodeon Recognizes Livingston, New Jersey Students for Volunteer Efforts

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Youth volunteers from Livingston are receiving national attention through Nickelodeon’s HALO Movement, which encourages young people to use their passion and creativity to help those in need.

Every year, Nickelodeon teams up with its long-standing partner Key Club International to share the stories of kids throughout the country who are “Helping And Leading Others” in their schools and communities. Livingston’s involvement with the movement began when Michelle Bent, communications and community outreach coordinator for Livingston Public Schools (LPS), saw that Key Club International had posted about Livingston High School’s (LHS) 2018 Intergenerational Prom on Twitter.

“I noticed that a rep of Kiwanis International left a message on that post saying that its partner, Nickelodeon, was interested in learning more about the project—so I reached out to her,” Bent told TAPinto. “She connected me to a producer at Nick. I supplied photos and a description of the prom…and hustled to get photo releases with the help of Liliana Branquinho and Michael Ladolcetta. And it happened! LPS is so proud that our Key Club has been recognized on this level, and that a true Livingston community effort is receiving national attention.”

A vignette that is currently airing periodically on Nickelodeon highlights LHS and the students involved in Key Club, who hosted the school’s 30th annual Intergenerational Prom in April in collaboration with LPS, the Livingston Education Association and the Township of Livingston. The event brought local teens and senior citizens together for a fun evening of dancing, food, prizes and more.

“The Key Club student volunteers were incredible,” said Branquinho, who spearheaded the event as the township’s Senior & Adult Enrichment and Special Events Supervisor. “Every year I'm amazed by their commitment to this event. They are extremely helpful with all the preparations that day, but also they fundraise throughout the year to help with some of the costs.”

During the event, Branquinho said the students are always extremely attentive to the seniors, and that they have fun mingling and dancing with them.

“We are very fortunate to live in a town where our town council and board of education support our Intergenerational Prom as well as other intergenerational programs,” she said. “This is a great way for youth and senior citizens to learn about each other and share experiences, which fosters understanding among the different generations. There's great value in this and we as a community must continue to support and create events like this.”

WV: Bridgeport Key Club Hoping To Win Nickelodeon HALO Movement Grant To Help Others

CLARKSBURG, WV — A Harrison County Key Club is asking for the community’s help in an online contest for grant funding.

BHS Key Club members box up Thanksgiving meals for the needy last year through the Backpack Ministry, Shepherd’s Corner and the Clarksburg Mission. From left are Megan Rinker, Hannah Povroznik, Joplin Kehrer, Madewa Adeniyi, Grant Duvall and Ben Fredi, a BHS foreign exchange student.

The Bridgeport High School Key Club kicked off the “Boxing it Up to Give Thanks” program in November 2017 to provide boxes of Thanksgiving food to Harrison County families in need.

Bridgeport High School sophomore Hannah Povroznik, who chaired the project last year, hopes to expand the program to include more Harrison County high school Key Clubs, and believes a grant from Nickelodeon would help achieve this goal.

In a partnership with Key Club International, Nickelodeon's HALO Movement is offering up to $2,500 in grant funding for Key Club service projects.

Key Club member Hannah Povroznik collects donations at a BHS football game during last year’s “Boxing It Up to Give Thanks” project to provide Thanksgiving meals to the needy.

Key Clubs from around the world have submitted projects to the competition, and online voters can vote once every 24 hours until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday 8th May 2018 for their favorite.

The top 10 vote-getters move on to round two, in which a panel of judges will review the entries.

According to Povroznik, who was recently elected lieutenant governor for the Key Club district including the Bridgeport, Robert C. Byrd, Lincoln and Notre Dame high school chapters, the goal is to include more communities in the project next year.

“This year we plan to go through multiple schools on a central theme and service project for the community,” Povroznik told The Exponent Telegram.

Last year, the Bridgeport club exceeded its community fundraising goal of $3,500 for the inaugural “Boxing it up to Give Thanks” project, raising over $5,000, Povroznik said.

That money was used to create 100 food boxes containing Thanksgiving staples, which were distributed through the Harrison County Backpack Ministry, Shepherd’s Corner and the Clarksburg Mission.

“I think one of the most important things in our community is hunger, because not a lot of people know about that, but it is still prevalent. There are multiple people in our schooling system who have packaged meals that are sent home every weekend, so this would definitely enable us to go further and unite our community,” Povroznik said.

“When Hannah first brought me the idea, I’d never thought about that. I just thought it was a really amazing idea to be able to give food to families who aren’t able to have it, especially on a special holiday like that,” said Bridgeport High School Key Club President Heather Bokey, a junior.

Bokey was involved in fundraising efforts for last year’s program.

“It was such a great experience. It’s so amazing to see all the people you helped, and there’s no greater feeling than helping someone in need,” Bokey said.

Online voting will continue until 2:59 a.m. on Tuesday 8th May 2018. Winners will be announced on or around Tuesday 15th May 2018. To vote, visit wyng.com/campaign/831769/entry/7562764.

NJ: Hunterdon, Warren H.S. Students To Package 16K Meals For Food Banks

Flemington, New Jersey - If you didn’t think high school students could make a difference, think again.

Seven local high schools from Hunterdon and Warren counties are teaming with the Outreach Program to package 16,000 meals to benefit the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks. Through grants, donations and their own fundraising, the clubs were able to make $4,500, which will be used to purchase the meals from Outreach.

Seven local high schools from Hunterdon and Warren counties are teaming with the Outreach Program to package 16,000 meals to benefit the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks.

Seventy volunteers from seven Key Clubs, including Delaware Valley, Hunterdon Central, North Hunterdon, Phillipsburg, Voorhees, Warren Hills and Warren County Vo-Tech high schools, will get together on Saturday, January 27 to pack the 16,000 meals at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Raritan Township. The meals will be shipped to the food banks.

The grants were funded by the New Jersey Kiwanis Foundation and Nickelodeon's the HALO Movement. The Kiwanis Foundation provides Kiwanis clubs with the resources that they need to make a difference in the lives of children.

Kiwanis is the adult counterpart to Key Club and aids the high school students in service projects. As part of Nickelodeon’s commitment to recognize real kids who are making a difference in the world, the network identifies teens who are looking to make the world a better place by giving grants so the teens can perform life-changing service projects.

Out of hundreds of Key Clubs that applied from across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, only 11 were selected to receive grants from the HALO Movement, and this project was selected as one of them.

The goal of the project is to help spread awareness about hunger in New Jersey, the New Jersey District of Key Club’s District Project and reduce the number of food-insecure children in New Jersey. One in every five children in New Jersey are food-insecure, meaning that they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

By donating the meals they pack to the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks, the volunteers hope that the meals will to go to support the children and their families.

“We are eternally grateful for this donation,” said Helene Meissner, director of the NORWESCAP Food Bank in Phillipsburg and a Phillipsburg Kiwanis Club member. “And it is so inspiring to see our kids work so hard to make it happen. It really goes to show that everybody and anybody can make a difference.”

For a first year event, the Division is extremely pleased with their results and success and hope that they will be able to hold a similar event again next year.

“It is really incredible to see what we can do when we work together," said Madeleine Eichorn, lieutenant governor of the Division 13 of the New Jersey Key Club and a Hunterdon Central Key Club member.

"There are so many people out there, there are so many children, that just don’t have the resources that they need to succeed. I just hope that we made a difference and are inspiring others to do the same."

The New Jersey District of Key Club would like to urge everyone to contribute to fighting Hunger in New Jersey by educating themselves and others about the topic in addition to donating their food and time to their local food banks. If you would like to learn more about Hunger in New Jersey or how to help, contact your local food bank for more information.

The HALO Movement is built upon Nickelodeon's HALO Awards, an annual concert event honoring young community leaders with a grant for their organization and scholarship funds. To date, more than 50 teens across the USA have been honored and have received more than $400,000 in grants to fund their non-profit organizations.
