Nickelodeon Reportedly Developing 'Yokai Samba' Animated Feature From Leo Matsuda

Nickelodeon is reportedly currently developing Yokai Samba, a brand new original animated created by animator Leo Matsuda!

Matsuda bring years of animation experience to the project and has worked on numerous animated films and TV shows. The animator began his career at Walt Disney Animation and worked on films such as Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Ralph Breaks the Internet, The Simpsons Movie and most recently Abominable for Dreamworks Animation. Matsuda’s directorial debut was the heartwarming short Inner Workings which premiered before the Disney hit Moana, and was shortlisted for the Oscars in 2017. Matsuda is set to co-direct New Line's upcoming animated/live-action hybrid Hello Kitty movie with Jennifer Coyle (Bob's Burgers).

Originally announced in April 2018, and originally set for Dreamworks Feature Animation Group, details about Yokai Samba “are under lock and key, but it is known to be inspired by a folk story he heard in his youth about growing up and has Brazilian and Japanese influences.” The development of the film at the time was being overseen by Dreamworks Feature Animation Group president Chris DeFaria and development exec Chris Kuser.
