Alberta’s The Melisizwe Brothers win ‘America’s Most Musical Family’ competition

Three brothers from the Edmonton area were crowned the winners of America’s Most Musical Family this past weekend, winning a recording contract with Republic Records and USD $250,000.

The Melisizwe Brothers — pronounced mel-li-seize-way — live in Leduc and take their inspiration from the Jackson 5.

The trio consists of 12-year-old lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Zacary James, 13-year-old lead pianist and back-up singer Seth James, and 16-year-old lead guitarist and back-up singer Marc James.

The James brothers chose the South African name “Melisizwe” because it means “leaders of the future” — and their future looks bright after winning Nickelodeon’s America’s Most Musical Family.

The sibling trio competed against 30 other family bands from across North America in front of three celebrity judges: singer Ciara, digital media sensation David Dobrik, pop icon and Broadway star Debbie Gibson, along with show host, singer and television personality Nick Lachey.

The Nickelodeon TV competition premiered on Nov. 1, 2019.

Over the course of the season, bands were eliminated through a process of the judges nominating their top picks of the week, and the show’s live studio audience selecting which of those bands should move to the next round.

During the two-hour long finale, the audience voted The Melisizwe Brothers to be the winning band after they performed Brave by Sara Bareilles and 7 Years by Lukas Graham.

The Melisizwe Brothers were first introduced to audiences with a performance of All of Me by John Legend — a song they performed in 2013 at their school talent show at Ecole Corinthia Park, in Leduc, located about 20 kilometres south of Edmonton.

The show said the performers continued to stand out throughout the competition with moving performances of Water Runs Dry by Boyz II Men, Waiting On The World To Change by John Mayer and Let It Go by James Bay.

Following the finale, The Melisizwe Brothers released their new original single, Stadium, as part of their contract with Republic Records — a division of Universal Music Group.

The boys became internet sensations in 2016 when a video of them singing a Jackson 5 song went viral.

They have since appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, America’s Got Talent, and Showtime at the Apollo, and Zacary was chosen to sing the theme song on the Netflix animated series Motown Magic.

The Melisizwe Brothers will be performing their new single on Nickelodeon’s All That on Saturday, Jan. 25, and live on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

From CTV News Edmonton:

'America's Most Musical Family' is from Leduc, Alta.

EDMONTON -- Recent winners of an American talent show and Republic Records’ newest artists aren’t just Canadian, but proudly hail from Leduc, Alta.

The Melisizwe Brothers were awarded a $250,000 recording contract after being named America’s Most Musical Family by Nickelodeon.

“It was really exciting because of what was to come in the future,” said the middle of the trio, 13-year-old Seth James.

“A lot of overwhelming emotions, but mostly happy emotions because that moment will stick with me for the rest of my life.”

The Nickelodeon program is a competition between 30 musically talented families.

In the Jan. 17 finale, Seth and his brothers Zachary and Marc performed Sara Bareilles’ Brave and Lukas Graham’s 7 Years.

“We just really practiced, we really worked hard, and I had to really give it my all every time I was on that stage,” Zachary told CTV News Edmonton, “because we knew there was a chance we were going to win this.”

Sixteen-year-old Marc added, “The experience, we’re never going to forget it.”

The group spoke to CTV News Edmonton while riding to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Thursday, having gone to the city to tape a segment on the Today show.

Next week, they’ll be flying to L.A. to promote their single Stadium on some of the late-night TV shows.

The brothers’ father, Mark, said the busy week of TV sets and travelling only symbolizes the significance of where his sons were raised.

“That’s a big question that most parents ask: how do we keep a balance? … It’s always a two-prong approach for us: the international stuff, but making sure we come home and always give back,” Mark told CTV News Edmonton.

“It was a small city that grew the boys,” he said, adding hometown friends and family have all been very supportive.

The Melisizwe Brothers said they were excited to be writing and touring in the coming months – but first, to be home for a little while.

The America’s Most Musical Family finale airs in Canada on Friday at 7 p.m. on YTV.

On Saturday, a performance of their single Stadium will air on Nickelodeon’s All That.

From Leduc Representative:

Leduc’s Melisizwe Brothers win America’s Most Musical Family

The Melisizwe Brothers have added another achievement to their long list of accomplishments, winning America’s Most Musical Family on Jan. 17.

The first season of the Nickelodeon show featured 30 families from around North America competing for a $250,000 cash prize and a recording contract with Republic Records.

Brothers Mark, Seth and Zachary grew up in the Leduc region, taking classes at the Leduc Music School and singing in the Corinthia Park School choir. Since launching their career they’ve performed around the world, making appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and America’s Got Talent.

Mark James, the boy’s father, said they were initially contacted by a casting director to audition for America’s Most Musical Family.

“The experience was amazing, the show was the first of its kind wherein you had to be a family to participate, so quite naturally the show had a really great, feel-good atmosphere,” James said.

The show was hosted by Nick Lachey and the families performed for celebrity judges Ciara, David Dobrik and Debbie Gibson. A live studio audience helped to pick the winner each week, which James said was part of what made the experience unique.

“We have participated in shows like America’s Got Talent … however this show was different in many ways. First, the kid’s audience voted for their favourite and second we were allowed to be who we wanted to be on this show.”

Throughout the competition the Melisizwe Brothers performed renditions of hit songs including ‘All of Me’ by John Legend and ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ by John Mayer. During the finale they performed ‘Brave’ by Sara Bareilles and ‘7 Years’ by Lukas Graham.

Following their win they’ve released their own original single, ‘Stadium’ with Republic Records. The brothers have a busy schedule ahead of them, creating a full length album and eventually going on tour.

“For us the next steps are to complete our albums, tour the world and play in stadiums,” James said.

“It’s amazing to win $250,000 and a record deal. Now we can go out and make more great music.”

From WHBQ:

Jonesboro family competes on Nickelodeon Singing Show

JONESBORO, Ark. — Musical talent runs in one Jonesboro, Arkansas family.

Nathan Mathis Sr., his Wife Tonina, and their children Elizabeth, Nathan, James, and Lyrica make up the Mathis Family Band.

“We’re all singing in church,” Nathan Mathis Sr. said.

“We’re all singing in choir, school choirs. They’re playing in band. So, we just decided to put it all together and came up with the Mathis Family.”

For more than ten years, the gospel-singing family has performed together at various venues.

Recently, they had the opportunity to perform on the national stage as contestants on Nickelodeon’s new competition series “America’s Most Musical Family.”

“I tell you what, I was skeptical as I don’t know what,” Mathis chuckled.

But it was no joke.

The family flew to Los Angeles to compete against 30 musical families for a chance at $250,000 and a recording contract with Republic Records.

Stars Ciara, David Dobrik and Debbie Gibson served as judges.

“It was a challenge and it made you bring your a-game,” Mathis said.

“And we were just ready. It was an experience that brought out the best in you.”

Taping began in July, with the first episode airing Nov. 1.

The Mathis family made it to the top four families, but were eliminated January 17 with their rendition of “Speechless” by Dan and Shay.

“If I’m being real, I was just trying to figure out how,” Elizabeth Mathis said.

“How is this possible?”

“I was shocked. I was shook,” Nathan Mathis Sr. said.

Though the family didn’t take home the grand prize, they said they’re still winners.

“The potential that we have to actually be able to make this our livelihood and to be able to just share our love for God, and our love for each other and family and unity in the world,” Mathis said.

The Mathis family is currently recording material for their first album with hopes to release their single in February.

The Mathis children attended Arkansas Virtual Academy (ARVA).

The virtual school in Arkansas, allows children to pursue music and do school schoolwork outside normal hours.
