Nickelodeon's Inaugural NFL Broadcast Featured a Big F-Bomb in the Middle of the Game

Sunday afternoon, the NFL made history by airing the first-ever playoff game on Nickelodeon. The New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears faced off while virtual slime cannons, googly eyes and a SpongeBob graphic in between goal posts entertained fans at home.

From its commentators to its visual effects, the NFL game was geared toward the whole family, with kids getting in on the fun with Nickelodeon show references (featuring old and new shows) throughout the game.

Overall, the Wild Card Weekend broadcast was a huge hit for Nickelodeon, but 2021 is still making sure we don’t have anything totally pure, and there was a brief moment when out amongst the family fun.

Although there was a slight hiccup prior to halftime due to a hot mic catching Chicago Bears receiver Cordarrelle Patterson delivering a not-so-kid-friendly F-bomb, yelling "What the f—" at the referee.

The incident occurred late in the second quarter. Chicago punted the ball on fourth down, which receiver Deontae Harris returned for seven yards. However, viewers noticed multiple penalty flags. The referee called Justin Hardee of the Saints and Patterson of the Bears for offsetting penalties. After the ref attributed the penalty to “number 85,” even though Patterson actually wears 84 for the Bears. the player's “What the f***?” The receiver's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for “running out of bounds on his own" is the one that prompted the outburst on live TV. Unfortunately, Nickelodeon was unable to insert a bleep - or a dolphin cry from SpongeBob SquarePants - in time. Although a viewer did make a fan-edit:

Chicago Bears wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson is the player who let an F-Bomb slip after the refs ruled against him for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moment seemed like it could be in response to either that mistake, or to the call itself. You don’t have to take our play-by-play as gridiron gospel, though; we have the receipts:

The commentators – which included NFL vet Nate Burleson, Clippers radio announcer Noah Eagle and All That's Gabrielle Green – glided right past the F-bomb, albeit pretty awkwardly.

It's important to remember that this is the first time the NFL has specifically geared a telecast toward children, and has a history of delivering some serious TV slip-ups from time to time. It’s also worth noting that the explicit language doesn’t seem to be either a malicious or intentional slip up; it just appears that Cordarrelle Patterson’s close proximity to the ref made it possible for his words to be picked up quite clearly by the mic.

When Patterson uttered the curse word, Twitter users reacted with a wide array of comments. Several said that they were stunned to hear the expletive while watching a broadcast highlighted by SpongeBob and slime. Others laughed about the unique moments and continued to joke as the two teams entered the locker rooms for halftime. Some fans even said that they wanted to hear Young Sheldon explain the meaning of the phrase just like he did with a false start penalty.

All profanity aside, Nickelodeon’s first NFL broadcast appeared to be a hit, and viewers seemed to be looking past the misstep right along with the announcers in order to focus on Nickelodeon’s thoughtful use of the sport's platform. On Twitter, football fans were thankful they were able to more easily bring their children into a sport that they love, making it easier for long time fans can make new ones out of their family members. Even Kurt Warner, a former NFL quarterback who won Super Bowl XXXIV, tweeted that his son tuned in for Nickelodeon’s broadcast, and explained how rare a moment that was. Warner's son, 31, suffered a traumatic brain injury at 4 months, is legally blind and had never watched a football game with his father until now:

Nickelodeon was able to add effects to the game digitally to bring Planet Nickelodeon to the world of football. Touchdowns triggered slime cannons, silly cartoon features were added over players’ faces, and characters from Nickelodeon shows were helping explain the game to kids in real time.

Nickelodeon Slimes Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton to Celebrate First-Ever NFL Game on Nick

With the news that Nickelodeon would be broadcasting its first NFL playoff game this week, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton pledged to “get slimed, whatever that means” during a press conference days before kickoff with the Chicago Bears. And while he initially lost sight of that item on his checklist in the minutes after eliminating Chicago, Payton doubled down in his postgame press conference, promising to try it out after finishing his media obligations.

After the Saints' 21-9 victory on Sunday afternoon, Payton was asked if he would follow through on his promise. The 57-year-old coach answered the question faster than you can say "Welcome to Good Burger."

"I am. They're waiting so as soon as I finish here, I told Nickelodeon that I would do it. I just saw the buckets and, yeah, we're going to do that here in a few minutes," Payton said not long before taking his green shower.

Unlike his players — who were doused with computer-generated slime by the broadcast crew during their game — Payton was hit with the full thing, taking a bucket full of green goo on the chin.

“Hi I’m Sean Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints, and I’m about ready to get slimed after our Super Wildcard win on Nickelodeon this weekend,’' the coach said, before pulling up his mask and letting out an ‘ahhhhhhh’ as the green stuff was poured over his head.

“Man,’' he added after the dousing while someone in the background congratulated him. “Thank you guys.’'

From virtual slime cannons that doused the end zone every time there was a touchdown to a giant SpongeBob graphic wedged between the goal posts during field goals, this game was out-of-this-world fun. Oh, and who could forget Young Sheldon giving the referees a run for their money with his A+ rule breakdowns?

Payton's sliming, which can be seen above, was the perfect ending to an action-packed day for "Who Dat Nation" before they have to get serious again when the Buccaneers come to town next week.

The video was later played in slow motion, adding to the laughter.

"It was pretty cold. It felt like Jello that's not quite finished being Jello," Payton said.

Often seen as a big influencer in the sport, Payton knows how to make football as fun as a Saturday morning cartoon.

Will this become a Saints’ ritual a la the Gatorade bucket that was first made famous by the 1986 New York Giants and head coach Bill Parcells? If New Orleans keeps winning, Payton just might give the thumbs up.

From Vulture:

Nickelodeon’s Wacky NFL Game Ends With Saints Coach Sean Payton Drenched In Slime

Between the virtual slime cannons, the SpongeBob goalpost, and cartoony mid-play filters, Sunday’s Chicago Bears versus New Orleans Saints Wild Card game was exactly what you might picture when you hear the words “NFL on Nickelodeon.” Beyond mere silliness, however, the game took the time to approach the (honestly, very complicated) game of football in a way the network’s elementary-aged audience might really enjoy, between the one-and-only Young Sheldon explaining first downs and former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Nate Burleson offering what we have to assume is the most wildly demanded explainer for the kids at home: What, exactly, do you do when you have to go to the bathroom during a play?

“That’s a great, great question,” he laughed during the telecast when asked by fellow analyst and All That reboot star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green. “Now here’s the thing: You can go inside, but then you don’t want to miss anything, right? Or, you can go into one of these little tents. It’s kind of like a Porta-Potty, and it’s sanitary, you know? But, Gabi, you do what you gotta do to get through the game. Sometimes? You just gotta hold it.”

Uh, does the regular CBS broadcast give you gems like this?! Okay, maybe sometimes, but they’re definitely not giving you actual slime on top of everything else. It wouldn’t be a Nickelodeon production without someone’s sneakers getting dyed neon green, and on Sunday, the honor went to Saints coach Sean Payton, after his team took home the win 21 to 9. Check out a few of the game’s other highlights below.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton delivers on slime promise to cap off entertaining Nickelodeon broadcast

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton understood how crisp his white and shining patent leather Jordan 11 retro low tops were.

He also understood he made a promise.

"I told Nickelodeon I would do it," Payton said after the Saints' 21-9 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. "I just saw the buckets. And yeah, we're going to do that here in a few minutes."

Cue the splash of green goo cascading over Payton as he sat on the floor in front of a Nickelodeon poster backdrop. Yes, the Super Bowl-winning coach got slimed.

"That was a no brainer," defensive end Cameron Jordan, wearing a Dexter's Laboratory sweater, said. "I'm more mad I couldn't set him up for me to dump the bucket on him. But somebody had to get slimed and I'm glad it was him."

Payton's sliming capped off an entertaining debut NFL broadcast on Nickelodeon, an effort by Nick parent company ViacomCBS to engage new football fans.

Touchdowns prompted an explosion of virtual slime, a trademark SpongeBob smile stretched between the uprights during field goal and extra-point attempts, and Drew Brees’ accuracy was explained in audience-appropriate terms.

“He’s that kid at recess who never misses you in dodgeball,” former NFL receiver Nate Burleson, who served as color analyst, said on the broadcast.

Even as the Saints controlled the game and each team was low-scoring for most of the contest, Nickelodeon “Nick-ified” the contest with bright colors and nostalgia-inducing graphics. Fifteen-year-old Nickelodeon star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green joined Burleson and play-by-play analyst Noah Eagle in the Superdome booth as they explained the game to football beginners in terms that would best relate to their audience.

Take Saints quarterback Drew Brees’ touchdown dump to running back Latavius Murray, Brees staying poised even as the Bears' vaunted pass rusher Khalil Mack swarmed. Burleson had already likened the collapsing pocket to a hide-and-seek game, when picking a crevice too small might cause panic as time elapses.

“Check out Khalil Mack right in his face,” Burleson said after Mack pressured Brees on the 6-yard touchdown. “That’s like a Mack truck literally running after you. … Imagine the composure of Drew Brees being in that pocket and then seeing one of the most feared defenders right in your face, Khalil Mack, and still having the calm to say: ‘All right, let’s not panic.’"

New spins continued from a comparison between the success of running back Alvin Kamara and Alvin Seville of "Alvin and the Chipmunks," to a hearty celebration in SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom after Kamara gashed the Bears defense. In celebration of Kamara tearing up the defense, Nickelodeon animators teed up a clip of SpongeBob literally tearing himself apart.

Even penalties were fun. Some were explained by the child adaptation of Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon, Young Sheldon noting of defensive pass interference: “That’s a complicated rule. I like it.” Viewers learned that players and coaches call flags laundry.

“For all the kids out there listening,” Burleson added, “help your mom and dad with the laundry.”

The life lesson continued, from plays under review — always check your answers before turning in your test! — to first-down conversions building incremental progress necessary to score a touchdown just as homework moves you steadily toward a touchdown. No end zone arrival was devoid of slime.

Green also personalized players by sharing fun facts ranging from their favorite foods (tie between chocolate and vanilla ice cream for one) to their fears (6-foot-7 tight end Jimmy Graham, she noted with amusement, said he’s afraid of heights). The broadcast remained poised through an audible expletive from Bears receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, with Eagle noting that Patterson “obviously, uh, disagreed” with the call. Nick star Lex Lumpkin served as sideline reporter, with in-game reports and a postgame interview with Jordan.

Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who completed 19-of-29 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, handily won Nickelodeon's valuable player NVP award despite his team losing.

The Saints will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC divisional round.

Nickelodeon and Paramount+ Release Sneak Peek of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years

Official Nickelodeon Press Release:

Nickelodeon and Paramount+ Release Sneak Peek of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years

All-New Animated Series Coming Soon to Paramount+

BURBANK, Calif.-January 10, 2021-Nickelodeon and Paramount+ today released a sneak peek of the all-new Paramount+ Original Series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years during a special halftime presentation of the NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon. In the sneak peek of the series premiere, "The Jellyfish Kid," a young SpongeBob is determined to catch his first jellyfish and his friends do whatever they can to help him.

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the series is coming soon to Paramount+, ViacomCBS' upcoming subscription video on-demand service. Following the season's run on Paramount+, the series will air on Nickelodeon later in the year.

In the first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff, the CG-animated prequel follows 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals as they spend their summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years features Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) reprising their iconic roles. Carlos Alazraqui (The Casagrandes) and Kate Higgins (Blaze and the Monster Machines) join as new characters Nobby and Narlene, narwhal siblings who live in the woods surrounding the camp.

Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series. Production of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years is overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series Animation, Nickelodeon.

Since its launch July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has reigned as the number-one animated series on TV for the last 18 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony Award(R)-winning Broadway musical and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is the most widely distributed property in ViacomCBS Networks International history, seen in more than 170 countries and territories, translated in 30+ languages, and averaging more than 100 million total viewers every month. SpongeBob SquarePants was created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank. The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurable optimist and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends.

Nickelodeon, now in its 41st year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The brand includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, digital, location based experiences, publishing and feature films. Nickelodeon and all related titles, characters and logos are trademarks of ViacomCBS Inc. (Nasdaq: VIACA, VIAC).

Update: Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years will have a special two-part episode!

Original post:

Fans got to fall in love with the ever-bubbly and porous SpongeBob SquarePants when he was living in a pineapple under the sea back when the Stephen Hillenberg-created show launched on Nickelodeon the summer of ’99. Twenty-two years later, fans will now get to experience SpongeBob before he was perennially donning a tie and flipping patties at the Krusty Krab, having nautical, nonsensical fun at summer camp.

Today, Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus (the soon to be rebranded CBS All Access) dropped a six-minute sneak peek of the all-new SpongeBob SquarePants prequel, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years during the slimy, family-friendly halftime presentation of the NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon. The CG-animated spinoff series follows a 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals as they spend their summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

In this first preview, “The Jellyfish Kid,” SpongeBob is determined to catch his first jellyfish— an important rite of passage in the world of Bikini Bottom —with the aid of his friends. The Nickelodeon Animation Studio production features most of SpongeBob’s original voice cast, with Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabbs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) reprising their legendary roles.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years is executive produced by SpongeBob SquarePants veterans Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller and Jennie Monica, and is overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series Animation, Nickelodeon.

Metal With a Half Shell: Loot Crate Re-Imagines Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Characters as Metal Bands for New T-Shirt Collection

Loot Crate launches a TMNT-themed apparel collection that combines your favorite Nineties cartoon heroes with iconic band motifs

Fans of Eighties and Nineties nostalgia take note: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back — this time with a guitar in hand — as part of a special collection of apparel that launches this month.

The Loot Crate TMNT Hesher Capsule Collection features four, retro-inspired T-shirts with images of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Shredder and Splinter, based on the look of the characters in the beloved '80s and '90s animated series, re-worked as iconic band motifs. The shirts pay tribute to metal bands like Motorhead, Judas Priest and Poison, with bold graphics and TMNT-themed puns (think “Shreadhead” for the Shredder-meets-Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance-inspired shirt). There’s even an April O’Neil appearance.

You can check out all the TMNT Hesher Capsule Collection T-shirts below and buy them here on Each shirt will run you $30 a piece, but if you order them all, you’ll save yourself 20 percent. Bonus: To round out your look, Loot Crate will throw in a pair of neon green TMNT socks if you add all four shirts to your cart. But move fast because this limited apparel run could sell out before you can get the TMNT theme song out of your head.
