Craig Bartlett Celebrates Pride Month with Tribute to Mr. Simmons

Animator Craig Bartlett, the creator of Nickelodeon's iconic '90s animated series Hey Arnold!, is celebrating Pride Month with a touching tribute to Mr. Simmons!

"Happy #pridemonth to Mr. Simmons!," Craig posted on Instagram, adding "We introduced him in season 2 when we realized that Ms. Slovak was too one-note, a teacher who just didn’t care, and the Simpsons had already covered that. So we thought, how about a teacher who REALLY cares, almost too much? And Simmons was born."

This isn't the first time Bartlett has talked openly about Mr. Simmons (voiced by Dan Butler from Frasier) and his sexuality. To celebrate Pride in 2018, the animator told fans: “We figured Mr. Simmons was a gay character without having to make a big deal of it or have it be a special episode or anything like that...The main thing about him is that he’s a great teacher and really passionate. And Slovak left teaching to become a professional golfer.”

Additionally, during press promotion for 2017's Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie, Bartlett confirmed a long-standing fan theory that Mr. Simmons is a part of the LGBTQ community after viewers were introduced to a friend of his named Peter in the show's Thanksgiving special:

"A lot of the audience assumed he was gay," Bartlett said. "Well, guess what? Peter IS Mr. Simmons' partner."

In fact, Mr. Simmons may not only be the only gay character in Hey Arnold! Bartlett has also hinted that Arnold's friend, Eugene Horowitz, was also gay.

http://nickanimation.tumblr.com/post/175245828226/an-unforgettable-scene-from-arnolds

Although it's been slow, representation of the LGBTQ community is thankfully becoming more prevalent.

In 2016, Nickelodeon made network history with their first-ever portrayal of a openly same-sex male couple on their animated series The Loud House. The show has also revealed that Lincoln's sister, Luna, and her crush, Sam, are bi-sexual. The series' positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters has earned it two GLAAD Media Awards nominations.

The network also featured a younger unmarried female same-sex couple in the 2014 conclusion of its hit animated action series The Legend of Korra, which ended with Korra and Asami, two of the shows female characters, embarking on a romantic relationship, with fans endearingly calling the couple 'Korrasami'. Korra and Asami's relationship continues in comic book sequels to the series, including the upcoming Ruins of the Empire.

Most recently, Nickelodeon's revived Double Dare featured it's first family with two dads. A major milestone.

In addition to Nick, PBS also recently made history when Arthur revealed that Mr. Ratburn is gay, and was marrying his partner! The episode culminated in a same-sex wedding of the two.

These representations are big deal considering that Nickelodeon has millions of viewers around the world, and the network's TV shows and movies featuring LGBTQ+ characters is an important step forward for mainstream visibility and acceptance of same-sex couples among younger viewers.

Nickelodeon Reportedly Cancels 'I Am Frankie'

Update (6/6) - Actor Nicole Alyse Nelson, who portrayed Dayton in the hit series, has seemingly confirmed that I Am Frankie has been canceled. In a tweet, the actor told fans:

"The end of an era but the start of an age. Thank you for watching. Without you, we wouldn’t have even gotten to make the 42 episodes that we did. I am Frankie might be over, but this talented group is just getting started. Stay tuned, kids. The best is yet to come. XOXO"

Update (4/23) - Actor Todd Allen Durkin has reportedly revealed to a fan that Nickelodeon has decided to cancel and not renew I Am Frankie for a third season. Durkin, who portrays James on I Am Frankie, is also reportedly have said that Nickelodeon was planning a I Am Frankie TV movie, but has now decided against it. Please note that this news has yet to be confirmed by Nickelodeon.

Original post:

Feels like things are getting real.. again!

During a recent appearance at Gamer Comic Expo 2018 in Miami, Florida in November 2018 to promote his movie, Trico Tri Happy Halloween, Carson Rowland, who plays Cole Reyes in I Am Frankie, revealed in a interview with Pero... Let Me Tell You! that Nickelodeon are planning to make a third season of the network's hit serialized live-action show! Check out the interview below!:

It's important to note that this interview was recorded back in November 2018, and a lot has changed at Nickelodeon since then, which could mean that plans for a third season could have been shelved since. However, fingers crossed!

I Am Frankie tells the story of Frankie Gaines (Alex Hook), a cutting-edge, experimental android who looks like any other human girl, but harbours a big secret--she functions as a high-tech computer with internet access, extensive memory and more. I Am Frankie will air Monday–Friday at 5:30pm (AEST) on Nickelodeon AU/NZ.

In season two, which aired on Nick USA in September 2018, Frankie had finally acclimated to teenage life at Sepulveda High with the help of her best friend Dayton (Nicole Alyse Nelson) and their tight-knit group of loyal confidantes. However, things quickly became complicated when a new android arrives at the school, and the world finally learnt that androids exist, and the military company, WARPA (Weaponized Android Research Project Agency), returned with a new threat. Throughout the season, Frankie aimed to keep her true identity a secret, while protecting her family and friends and attempting to live a normal life.

I Am Frankie stars Amina Alzouma (“Rachel”), Uriel Baldesco (“Lucia”), Kristi Beckett (“Makayla”), Kyson Facer (“Andrew”), Sophia Forest (“Jenny”), Mohana Krishnan (“Tammy”), Tommi Rose (“Simone”), Carson Rowland (“Cole”), and Zachary S. Williams (“Zane”).

Filmed at Viacom International Studios (VIS) in Miami, I Am Frankie was originally produced as Yo Soy Franky by Nickelodeon Latin America in Colombia. The series is created by renowned Argentine writer Marcela Citterio. The English language version is produced by Paradiso Pictures and Nickelodeon Latin America.

Additionally, in the interview, Carson revealed that he'll be working on a brand-new Christmas movie by the same producer of Trico Tri Happy Halloween!

Pinkfong's Baby Shark Joins the Nickelodeon Family

Original Nickelodeon USA Press Release:

Pinkfong’s Baby Shark Joins the Nickelodeon Family

Pinkfong and Nickelodeon to Enter into a Content and Global Licensing Deal for Baby Shark

June 05, 2019 09:43 AM Eastern Daylight Time

NEW YORK--Nickelodeon, a division of Viacom International Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), and SmartStudy, the global entertainment company behind the beloved children’s brand, Pinkfong, will partner to develop a new original animated series based on Baby Shark for global distribution, while Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) will be managing consumer products licensing worldwide, excluding Asia, for the property.

Baby Shark became a breakout sensation when it launched on YouTube in November 2015. With music, characters, story and dance all combined together, Baby Shark took the world by storm, amassing 2.9 billion YouTube views and becoming the 9th most watched video in the platform’s history. The song recorded a 20-week-streak on the Billboard Hot 100 and spawned a viral phenomenon #BabySharkChallenge, generating over 700K cover videos around the globe.

Baby Shark is a multiplatform phenomenon, and appetite for more content and products is strong around the world,” said Pam Kaufman, President, Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products. “Our outstanding creative teams are moving fast to get more Baby Shark product across multiple categories to retailers, and our content team is excited to develop a terrific original animated series that will bring this property to new heights and even more fans.”

Baby Shark has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube ever,” said Ramsey Naito, Executive Vice President, Nickelodeon Animation. “At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon.”

“We are really excited to be partnering with Nickelodeon to co-produce our first television series about Baby Shark and look forward to bringing our characters from the screen into the real world,” said Min Seok Kim, CEO, SmartStudy.

###

Baby Shark fits in with Nick’s new direction under president Brian Robbins to create and seek out content in new formats and from other platforms for its target audience. In April, the channel premiered Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, starring toy-reviewing YouTube superstar Ryan from Ryan ToysReview, and promptly renewed it for a second season days later. Nickelodeon today announced that it has struck an agreement with pocket.watch, the producer of Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, to manage licensing in select international markets across all product categories for Ryan’s World, a companion consumer products line featuring Ryan and the universe of characters created by Ryan and his parents, and Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. Nickelodeon also has talent and/or licensing deals with Ryan's fellow YouTube stars JoJo Siwa, Isabella de La Torre ("La Bala"), and Annie LeBlanc.

The Baby Shark news comes a day after Nickelodeon ordered new seasons of four of its preschool animation favorites: PAW Patrol (season 7), Bubble Guppies (season 5), Abby Hatcher (season 2) and Butterbean’s Café (season 2).

Here’s the video that inspired the latest Nickelodeon project:

A video accompaniment for the aquatic-themed earworm for kids was uploaded to YouTube in June 2016 by Pinkfong, an educational brand from South Korea which makes fun, catchy music videos tailored to kids. The 2-minute infectious clip sees a little boy and girl singing and dancing along to repetitive-sounding lyrics while they tell the story of a family of sharks — a baby, mommy, daddy, grandma and grandpa — who hunt and avoid danger together.

Though the song existed before the first Baby Shark video, Pinkfong is responsible for the song’s recent rise to fame. The original video was posted in 2016, but Baby Shark became a viral hit in 2018, after hashtag challenges initially tailored to parents of Baby Shark fans started to trend and even many people without young children found the song stuck in their heads. The song was later covered by various television hosts and was featured on the X Factor.

Baby Shark cracked the Billboard Top 100 in the first week of January, and has since become the most popular “educational” video trend on YouTube. The original video secured the ninth spot on the top 10 most viewed YouTube videos (beating out Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” and Katy Perry’s “Roar”). James Corden has also recorded a piano version of the hit, and Kylie Jenner has mentioned the song multiple times on social media and even had a live performance of the song at daughter Stormi Webster’s first birthday. On May 31, American DJ Jauz released an EDM version of the song. Baby Shark definitely has a lasting power.

Beyond the music videos, Pinkfong has 125 series of apps tailored towards children with 150 million downloads. Titles range from the Flappy Bird-esque Baby Shark Run to Pinkfong ABC Phonics. It makes sense that Pinkfong would focus on growing its place in the children’s entertainment sphere, and that a big American children’s entertainment company would want in on the viral phenomenon.

The news also comes just over a week after Nickelodeon released the first promo for the upcoming reboot of Blue’s Clues — and in addition to a new host, it boasts nifty new animations in the form of its titular dog, now CGI-animated.

Re-titled Blue’s Clues and You!, the show will be presented by Broadway star Joshua Dela Cruz. Just like original host Steve Burns, Dela Cruz has a Thinking Chair, a Handy Dandy Notebook and friends like Tickety Tock, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Mailbox and Magenta.

Update (4/22) - Via Kidscreen:

Can birthdays be big business opps for brands?

Barbie, SpongeBob and Sesame are seeing strategic opportunities in their major milestones, taking celebratory marketing beyond just cake and balloons.

The average person celebrating a birthday can expect a silly hat, a song and (hopefully) some cake. Barbie, though, is anything but average, and that’s why she’s getting a massive consumer products program on her 60th anniversary this year. And while most 15-year-olds may be mortified to spend their birthdays with their own parents—let alone someone else’s—Peppa Pig is inviting families from around the world to celebrate with her in a series of live performances and events. Sesame, meanwhile, is throwing a shindig big enough for the entire neighborhood in celebration of its 50th anniversary (talk about a Street party).

Birthdays are much more than just a chance for a sugar fix. They can be an opportunity for brands to build engagement, drive revenue, reflect on the past and even map out the future.

For kids (and kids at heart)

Nick is targeting kids and adults for Spongebob’s 20th birthday

SpongeBob SquarePants occupies a unique position in the kids space, and that’s not even taking into account the fact that he lives in a pineapple under the sea. He’s just as popular with the adults who grew up watching the animated series as he is with kids today. To tap into that dual love, Nickelodeon is commemorating 20 years of SpongeBob with a big splash on screen and in stores, designed to appeal equally to both audiences.

The year-long celebration will be bookended by new content, beginning with the premiere of mixed live-action and animated special SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout in July and ending with the launch of feature film The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a
Wonderful Sponge in summer 2020.

Nick’s master toy partner Alpha Toy Group will bow kid-focused products from its new range throughout the year, including toys, collectibles, plush, novelties and playthings that incorporate Nickelodeon’s famous slime.

SpongeBob’s popularity with the older crowd has not waned in recent years, thanks to social memes and the popularity of gifs from the series. For these big-kids-at-heart, Alpha is launching vinyl figures designed to cater to fans familiar with SpongeBob’s online popularity, with figures inspired by viral moments like Mocking SpongeBob or Surprised Patrick. Another adult-focused agreement will see fashion designer Cynthia Rowley launch a SpongeBob-themed wetsuit.

“When we’re talking to kids, obviously they’re most connected to SpongeBob through the content. So the special is all about
SpongeBob’s birthday and that will be a great moment for the core consumer on the platform,” says Charlotte Castillo, SVP of global franchise planning for Viacom Nickelodeon consumer products.

“For kids, a collaboration with Cynthia Rowley is not as relevant, but we’ll do some social and short-form [content] around SpongeBob underwater, and that is relevant for them,” she adds. “It’s about balance, and managing both messages throughout all the activations to make sure everything will impact both [kids and adult fans].”

Nickelodeon also sees anniversaries as a prime time to differentiate at retail, whether it’s something as simple as in-store signage and anniversary imagery on packaging, or a more complex full rebrand for shorter timeline categories (picture an entire apparel range inspired by SpongeBob’s birthday). Retailers are always looking for something new to pull in kids and their families, especially when a franchise has been around for 20 years and become an accepted, expected figure on retail shelves, says Castillo.

“From a retailer’s perspective, they can galvanize around an anniversary and that makes these milestone moments really important for an evergreen property like SpongeBob,” she says. “That’s our philosophy around launching and marketing and continuing to reinvigorate our properties.”

You’re invited

While Nickelodeon is taking advantage of SpongeBob’s anniversary to refresh the evergreen brand at retail, Entertainment One is using Peppa Pig’s birthday to solidify a top spot in the world of live and location-based entertainment.

Update (6/2) - From License Global:

SpongeBob Celebrates the ‘Best Year Ever’

Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” is turning 20 this year, and to mark the occasion, the team is kicking off a big, big year. License Global spoke with Charlotte Castillo, senior vice president, franchise planning, Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products, about the big milestone and how the animated series has influenced a generation.

Why has ‘SpongeBob’ influenced pop culture for two decades?

Not only has he influenced kids’ television, but he has made a mark on everything from films to fashion and social media. He is a true four-quadrant evergreen franchise with an incredibly broad fan base spanning everyone from kids to adults all around the world.

Let’s discuss this year’s major milestone– ‘SpongeBob’s’ 20th.

We are focused on four main buckets for ‘SpongeBob’s’ 20th celebration–content, collaborations, experiential and product. “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” a onehour mixed live-action/animation special will premiere this summer; and Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, will release in cinemas worldwide in summer 2020.

‘SpongeBob’s’ official YouTube channel launched this year, and a brand-new mobile game will launch in spring 2020.

On the collaborations front, we have exciting partnerships running across the art, fashion and retail worlds. Cynthia Rowley included a ‘SpongeBob’ wet suit as part of their New York Fashion Week runway show, and ‘SpongeBob’ also appeared on Fashion Week runways in Amsterdam and Israel. Pantone named official ‘SpongeBob yellow’ and ‘Patrick Star pink’ colors. Artist Romero Britto is creating a one-of-a-kind mixed media ‘SpongeBob’ piece, and Singapore artist Johnny Lau and Mexico-based Grupo Chespirito are creating unique mash-ups. More collaborations are planned.

Fans will also be able to experience ‘SpongeBob’ in real life–we have multiple pop-ups planned, we will take him to global events like San Diego Comic-Con, celebrate him in our hotels and theme parks, as well as malls and retail stores worldwide. New product across multiple categories are planned this year.

New global master toy partner Alpha Group debuted a brand-new line of toys, collectibles, plush and novelties.

How will VNCP keep ‘SpongeBob’ fresh as it moves into the future?

Our franchises are at the center of Nickelodeon’s strategy, and it is what drives our consumer products business–and ‘SpongeBob’ is our biggest franchise. ‘SpongeBob’ is unique in that its fan base is as broad as they are diverse.

Brian Robbins, president of Nickelodeon, recently talked about planning to delve deeper into ‘SpongeBob’s’ world with new stories and multiple spin-off series with various characters across multiple platforms. In consumer products, this gives our creative teams the opportunity to keep product fresh with new style guides and ideas for new product categories.

The “No Brainer” collaborator is putting his spin on Nickelodeon’s beloved All That theme song. There are high expectations and Chance is pulling out all the stops for his new song.

On Monday (June 3, 2019), Chance shared a short preview of his version of the All That theme tune. The 26-year-old rapper enlisted the services of a full choir for the chorus before diving into a fast-paced rap verse. The video features chance and a gang of his friends dance to their gospel-esque, hip hop rendition of the All That theme song. In the clip, a choir of voices can be heard singing the song’s iconic refrain before Chance barges in with his characteristically staccato delivery, “Thirty minutes don’t touch that dial. Don’t interrupt right now / Tell mama fall back. Cause another ‘All That’ comin’ up right now.”

"Don’t touch that dial" could also refer to the Kenan & Kel theme song, a spin-off from All That starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell.

Comedian Vena E. teased a forthcoming All That soundtrack in a photo with Chance.

The revival of All That premieres June 15 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA. It will feature a mix of returning cast members — like Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, and Josh Server — and new, young comedians. Thompson and Mitchell also serve as executive producers on the reboot. The original All That featured a theme song by TLC, which is also returning for the revived series!

Chance The Rapper’s hotly-anticipated debut “Owbum” is due out in July. Since announcing the project in February, the Chicago rapper has been peppering fans with song snippets, photos of himself working with famous friends in the studio, and more than a few Triller videos of him hitting “The Woah,” to the project’s first single “Groceries.” The musician has also took some time this year to record a Super Bowl commercial for Doritos with Backstreet Boys. He’s linked up with artists like 2 Chainz, Tee Grizzley, Supa Bwe, and Ed Sheeran for features, and dropped his new single, “GRoCERIES,” last month.

Chance is known to enjoy tinkering with television show tracks, as he also remixed the Arthur theme a couple of years ago.

Chance the Rapper will also be co-hosting Nickelodeon SlimeFest 2019, Festival, June 8-9, 2019 at Huntington Bank Pavilion
at Northerly Island in Chicago, Ill.

TLC released the All That theme song in 1994, recorded during the same sessions that produced the trio’s classic album, CrazySexyCool. It appeared on the All That soundtrack, which also featured songs by Aaliyah, Immature, Soul for Real, Faith Evans, Naughty By Nature, and more.

All That Is Back! Catch the brand-new season of All That, Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT) from Saturday, June 15, 2019, only on Nickelodeon!
