Rally Studios Releases Drone Film of Nickelodeon Universe, Mall of America

Rally Studios gained worldwide attention with Bryant Lake Bowl drone footage. Now check out their Mall of America video.


Rally Studios, the Minneapolis creative studio that gained worldwide attention with its drone footage of Bryant Lake Bowl, is at again — this time in a first-person video that captures the highs and lows of Mall of America and its theme park, Nickelodeon Universe.

The Rally team had a goal of not only setting up a drone shoot inside Mall of America, but also to bring in nostalgic storytelling from their days growing up in Minnesota and frequenting the Bloomington mall, said Jay Christensen, a cinematographer at Rally Studios.


“Our entire team has always been huge fans of Mall of America and dreamed of setting up a drone shot there even before the Bryant Lake Bowl footage caught like it did,” Christensen said in a mall-issued news release.

The 2-minute, 17-second video brings viewers through the mall’s atrium for a look at the public art installation, Kaleidoscope, before flying into Nickelodeon Universe, the seven-acre Nickelodeon-branded theme park located in the center of the mall. From there, the drone chases roller coasters and weaves in and out of other attractions before taking viewers eye to eye with the giant sculptures atop The Lego Store.


The video, “The Quack Attack is Back,” also follows along the Rally crew in Rollerblades as a nod to the mall scene in the 1994 movie D2: The Mighty Ducks.

“Working with the Mall was a collaborative effort that brought together like-minded folks who wanted to try making the seemingly impossible possible. And that’s just what we did,” Christensen said. “After a busy morning of strapping on Rollerblades and chasing rollercoasters with a drone, we are extremely proud of this footage and look forward to future shoots with the Mall of America team.”

Rally Studios is best known for its recent release of “Right Up Our Alley,” an 87-second, viral video of a one shot first-person view drone swooping through Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis that has captivated millions of people worldwide.

The new drone clip pays homage to The Mighty Ducks, the ‘90s hockey film shot in the Twin Cities.

The video started picking up viral steam when it was posted on Reddit in March, and has been featured in news outlets worldwide, including BBC News, CNN and the New York Times. According to Rally Studios, it caught the attention of James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, who on Twitter described the video as “stupendous” and then formally invited Rally to join his crew in London later this year when they shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The drone footage brings viewers through the Atrium of Mall of America for an unparalleled view of the public art installation, Kaleidoscope, before flying into Nickelodeon Universe, the seven-acre theme park located in the center of Mall of America. From there, the drone chases roller coasters and weaves in and out of other attractions before taking viewers eye to eye with the giant sculptures atop The LEGO store. 

“The Rally Studios team are brilliant creators and collaborators,” said Chris Grap, lead storyteller and experience designer for Mall of America. “Their pride and passion for Minnesota and Mall of America was infectious and led the vision for this one shot. In the wake of its Bryant Lake Bowl success, the Minneapolis production company pays homage to Minnesota with a flight through the Bloomington megamall.

Rally Studios, the Minneapolis production company behind a recent viral video of Bryant Lake Bowl, is documenting another Minnesota icon: the Mall of America.

The company’s latest drone video takes viewers on a flight through the Bloomington mall and its indoor theme park, Nickelodeon Universe.

Chris Grap, lead storyteller and experience designer at the Mall of America, said that the viral bowling alley clip and the evident passion behind it inspired him to work with Rally Studios.

“I’m a huge fan of Bryant Lake Bowl, and the reasoning behind Rally Studios working with them showed who they are: honest, passionate, compassionate storytellers from our community,” Grap said. “They love Minnesota; they love Mall of America. Working with them to help them achieve their vision was a privilege.”

The new video begins with footage of the “Kaleidoscope” public art installation before zooming into Nickelodeon Universe, the 7-acre theme park inside the mall. Titled “The Quack Attack is Back,” the drone video pays homage to—you guessed it—The Mighty Ducks, the classic ‘90s hockey movie shot in the Twin Cities.

The Rally Studios team aimed to highlight their nostalgia of growing up in Minnesota and frequenting Mall of America.

“Our entire team has always been huge fans of Mall of America and dreamed of setting up a drone shot there even before the Bryant Lake Bowl footage caught like it did,” said Jay Christensen, aerial cinematographer and drone pilot at Rally Studios, in a news release. “Working with the mall was a collaborative effort that brought together like-minded folks who wanted to try making the seemingly impossible possible. And that’s just what we did.”

Grap said he hopes the collaboration brings a sense of joy and excitement to viewers. He said this won’t be the last time the teams work together.

“There are definitely more icons throughout Mall of America waiting for their time to shine,” Grap said.

Last month, Rally Studios made international headlines for its swooping footage of Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater on West Lake Street in Minneapolis. The video, called “Right Up Our Alley,” has now been viewed nearly 2 million times on YouTube alone, and even received praise from James Gunn, the director and screenwriter behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad.

The bowling alley clip was shot as part of a project to support iconic Minnesotan businesses hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent social unrest.

Two weeks ago, Rally Studios auctioned off the video as a non-fungible token (NFT) with the intention to donate all proceeds to the Lake Street Council, a Minneapolis nonprofit that supports local entrepreneurs and artists. The unique piece of digital artwork sold for 2 Ethereum, valued at about $4,670.

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.

Following launch, new episodes will continue to air weekdays at 14:00 on Nickelodeon in Portugal and at 15:00h on Nickelodeon in España. The series is locally titled Ollie y los monstruos in Spain.

Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve.

In the first episode, “New Kid on Campus,” Ollie takes Captain Wowski to school in the pack. CW loves it so much he poses as the new kid the next day. Then, "The Chosen One(s), a former Chosen One unexpectedly shows up. Her presence creates a rift between Ollie and his pals. The series premiere is locally titled "Chico nuevo en el colegio / Los Elegidos" in Spain.

The US-English dub of the series stars James Hartnett (Cupcake & Dino) as Ollie, an ordinary, impulsive, and creative kid who has been given the status of Chosen One and Keeper of the Pack; Ana Sani (Mysticons) as Cleo, the brave and adventurous comic relief; and David Berni (Rocket Monkeys) as Bernie, the nervy and logical voice of reason.

Along the way, audiences will be introduced to some larger than life monsters including Andre and Bev, a bounty hunting double act; Major Snooch, a high ranking official in the Ministry of Chosen One Affairs; and Rance, a weaselly petty thief in utter denial about his boldfaced stealing.

The series originated from “Monster Pack,” an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. Creators Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty) met at the Vancouver Film School and have now been friends for over 10 years. Pedro is a creator, producer, director and animator from Rio de Janeiro, while Graham is an animation supervisor and instructor at local and overseas studios.

ViacomCBS Launches Paramount Plus in the Nordics

ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) Nordics today (March 25) launched their new and improved Paramount+ SVOD service in the Nordic region. The service will initially be available through local partner, such as Apple TV, Telia TV in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and Tele 2, Telenor and Allente in Sweden, with plans to release a direct-to-consumer Paramount+ app in April 2021.


Update (29/4) - ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) Nordics today released a standalone Paramount+ app for iOS and Android devices in the Nordic region!

With more than 6,000 episodes and films to be released throughout the year, Paramount+ will be home to iconic hits from across the ViacomCBS portfolio of brands and networks, including Nickelodeon, including the brand new SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. Local productions available from launch include the first season of Ib the Dog, with season two, being produced exclusively for the premium streaming service in the Nordics region, set to arrive in summer 2021.

Gravitas Ventures Releases 'The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story'

Gravitas Ventures, Llc will release The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story, a documentary that explores the golden years of Nickelodeon and beyond through interviews with the actors, writers and creators of iconic Nickelodeon shows, on Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 17, 2020! The title is available to pre-order now on Target.com (priced $13.29 USD) and Craft & Vinyl ($19.99 USD). The Nickelodeon documentary will also be released on on-demand services the same day.

Led by trailblazing visionary Geraldine Laybourne and her commitment to putting kids first, a group of unconventional heroes turned an underdog channel into an $8 billion dollar juggernaut as the golden standard for children’s programming. The Orange Years chronicles the rise of Nickelodeon, with the actors, writers, and creators from all the golden age Nickelodeon shows that shaped your lives. It’s wild. It’s crazy. It changed the world"



Using their combined skills in journalism and filmmaking as well as their mutual love for classic Nickelodeon, directors Adam Sweeney (part of the team behind The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey) and Scott Barber set out to make the documentary film Nickelodeon fans deserve. The childhood friends from The Woodlands grew up watching their beloved shows together and now share a new perspective on Nickelodeon.

The Orange Years journeys behind the scenes of the “kids first” phenomenal programming to chronicle the improbable and unprecedented success of Nickelodeon, straight from the mouths of those who brought the classic shows to fans as children. Filled with interviews from the actors, writers, animators, and creators from all your favorite golden age Nick shows, the film highlights the work of visionary Geraldine Laybourne, who was largely responsible for the network’s success in the early days.


The documentary has been been a labor of love for the filmmakers, who have interviewed some of the most famous and recognizable names from the channel's history, all the way back to its unlikely origins as Pinwheel in Columbus, Ohio.

The film has an all-star Nickelodeon cast including Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Saturday Night Live), Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Game Shakers), Alisa Reyes (All That), Marc Summers (Double Dare), Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack), Phil Moore (Nick Arcade), Kirk Fogg (Legends of the Hidden Temple), Venus DeMilo (Salute Your Shorts), Michael Bower (Salute Your Shorts), and Danny Cooksey (Salute Your Shorts), Fred Keller (Hey Dude) and Christine McGlade (You Can’t Do That on Television).

Not that The Orange Years concentrates only on Nick's live-action output. The filmmakers also talked to talents from the groundbreaking animated division, like writer Mitchell Kriegman (Rugrats, Clarissa Explains it All), and the king of cartoon voice work, Tom Kenny (Rocko's Modern Life and SpongeBob SquarePants).

More than just a history lesson or a “where are they now?” special, the documentary explores the network’s revolutionary approach to storytelling, the impact it had on a generation of youth, and aims to find out of why these shows have stayed in the hearts of so many people.

Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs) serves as an executive producer on the documentary.

The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story made its world debut during a panel at the ninth annual DOC NYC festival in November 2018, which was attended by directors Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney; and '90s Nickelodeon stars Danny Tambarelli and Michael C. Maronna from The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Lee Leshen will served as the panels moderator.

Zen Monkey Studios has announced that they'll be releasing a range of pin badges inspired by Nickelodeon's popular noughties animated series My Life As A Teenage Robot later this year!

Update (4/29) - The enamel pin badges are now available to purchase on zenmonkeystudios.com! There are three badges (Jenny on the Phone, Flying Jenny and XJ9 Gear) to collect, each priced $9.99. A 3-park is also available for $29.99, which is currently on sale for $22.99!

Zen Monkey Studios' My Life As A Teenage Robot pin badges will be perfect for wearing whilst blading at the skate park down by the mall, preventing hostile aliens from annihilating us all, or any other hobby or chore you may have!

My Life As A Teenage Robot was created by Rob Renzetti and premiered on August 1st, 2003. Set in the fictional town of Tremorton, the series follows the adventures of a robot girl named XJ-9, or Jenny Wakeman, as she prefers to be called, who attempts to juggle her duties of protecting Earth while trying to live a normal human life as a teenager. MLAATR ran for 62 episodes over three seasons, winning two Emmy awards and garnering an additional nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. The series was produced by Frederator Studios in association with Nickelodeon Animation Studios.


Renzetti pitched the series to Frederator Studios' animated shorts showcase Oh Yeah! Cartoons and a pilot titled "My Neighbor is a Teenage Robot", which aired on January 5, 1999.

Zen Monkey Studios' My Life As A Teenage Robot pin badges are currently up on the company's wholesale catalog for a select clients, and plan to offer them to their distributor catalogs in a few months, so hopefully they'll be available for fans to purchase later this year!

Rainbow to Represent ‘The Smurfs’ in Italy

Historic licensing company of The Smurfs, IMPS / Lafig has chosen Rainbow Group to manage the licensing plan that will accompany the new series of The Smurfs on the Italian territory.



"We are thrilled and it's a pleasure to work for a timeless brand like The Smurfs, already beloved by the Italian audience and undoubtedly synonymous with cutting-edge values,” says Matteo Olivetti, sales director, global consumer product, Rainbow Group. “We are already in the process of finalizing several agreements with top-level partners for CP development in the classic categories but stepping outside the box and experimenting is one of our strengths, and we look forward to launching new collaborations.”

Rainbow has already inked deals with many consumer product (CP) partners for the development of the countless possibilities offered by the brand, a success that is supported by more than four generations of fans and always very popular.


“The love story between The Smurfs and the Italian audience is a long and passionate one and we are so happy to now have such a strong and dynamic agency as Rainbow on board,” says Véronique Culliford, president and founder, IMPS / LAFIG and daughter of Smurfs creator, Peyo.

“We are very excited to work together making the blue color of the rainbow shine with a broad range of amazing Smurf products.”

The new season of the property recently made its world premiere on Ouftivi in French-speaking Belgium on Sunday 18th April 2021, and will debut on Nickelodeon channels globally this fall. The series will also air on Italian free-to-air Rai Yoyo in spring 2022 with 52 episodes of 11 minutes and target audience 5-10 years. Following, the series will also land on TVOD, and AVOD platforms in the first half of 2022, to be distributed on SVOD services, including Netflix in early 2023. The series is set to launch on French television channel TF1 on May 8th.

In additional Smurfy news, The Smurfs has teamed up with Rovio for an exclusive The Smurfs tournament on Angry Birds Friends. In the game, players have to to free the Smurfs from Gargamel. The Smurfs x Rovio will be available to play until Sunday 2nd May 2021.

Following, the series will also land on TVOD, and AVOD platforms in the first half of 2022, to be distributed on SVOD in early 2023.

For over 60 years a great formula of friendship, tolerance and respect for the environment, The Smurfs never cease to excite thanks to their edutainment-rich and always compelling stories.

In addition to the content partnership, ViacomCBS Consumer Products (VCP) will manage consumer products licensing for The Smurfs property across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia. VCP will seek new merchandising and promotional partners in select categories and territories for The Smurfs classic brand, in addition to a new product line for the new animated series The Smurfs, spanning categories including toys, stationery, apparel and accessories, home, consumer packaged goods and more, to launch at retail in 2022.


New CG ‘Smurfs’ Series Begins Global Adventure

Presented in development at the 2018 Annecy International Animation Film Market (MIFA), The Smurfs, a new animated series produced by Dupuis Edition et Audiovisuel with Peyo Productions, for TF1 in France, heralds the revival of the famous little blue creatures on television. The series has been licensed globally by Nickelodeon, with a U.S. premiere slated for this year followed by international rollout.

Peyo’s beloved characters, created 1958, first made the transition from comics to the screen in 1959. The Smurfs began their animated adventures on TV, with Dupuis and then American studio Hanna-Barbera (Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, Wacky Races) and then the big screen, always with the same success. However, they have not been adapted for television since the late 1980s.

With Peyo Productions and Dupuis Edition et Audiovisuel, these small but scrappy stars will be back on the small screen starting May 9 in France on TFOU, in a brand new, totally updated 3D animated series: 52 original 11-minute stories directed by William Renaud (Calimero, A Kind of Magic…), featuring colorful characters (and not just because they’re nearly all blue) — including a whole team of daring and inventive girl Smurfs alongside Smurfette — and punchy dialogue. A joyful mixture for both girls and boys from six to 10 years old, which will also allow older children to enjoy rediscovering the essence of the comics.

“For Dupuis Édition et Audiovisuel, which was involved in the first animated adventures of the Smurfs back in the 1960s, it is extremely exciting to revisit this universe in this ambitious new series, alongside Peyo Productions and in collaboration with TF1,” said Caroline Duvochel, producer of the series. “This is a key project for our studio, in which all the teams have been particularly involved. We are very proud to be able to contribute to bringing today’s children these new 3D images showing the marvellous adventures of these characters, full of kindness, mischief and sparkle, things we need so much of in this day and age.”

“We are delighted to welcome the Smurfs to TFOU for new adventures, each one funnier than the last. This comedy/adventure series has its rightful place in our schedule as the world of these friendly little blue creatures and their very special language fits perfectly with TFOU’s mischievous yet caring tone,” said Yann Labasque, director of youth programming at TF1. “By giving the series consistent and powerful exposure on all its platforms, the TF1 group acts as a unique and strong sounding board for the franchise, whose licence is already managed by TF1 Licences.”

Véronique Culliford, founder and president of Peyo Productions and IMPS (distribution) and Peyo’s daughter, added that she was “very happy to be able to continue my father’s work once again by co-producing a new Smurfs TV series.” She added, “And this, almost 40 years after the world-famous original series. You will discover Smurfs in ‘3D’ effect, like in the last film Smurfs: The Lost Village [Sony Pictures Animation], with a lot of humor and lots of adventures full of twists and turns. This co-production has the best actors on the market and will enchant both young and old for decades to come!”

Distributed internationally by IMPS, the series made its world premiere on RTS in Switzerland and RTBF and VRT in Belgium in mid-April, and is now preparing to move into France and Germany before meeting the rest of the world.
