Brand-New SpongeBob SquarePants Balloon

NEW YORK--Nickelodeon is celebrating 20 years of its iconic SpongeBob SquarePants series with a brand-new high-flying balloon at the 93rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. The new balloon features everyone’s favorite subaquatic sponge and his beloved pet snail Gary. The nationally televised holiday spectacle will also feature a brand-new float inspired by the network’s highly anticipated preschool series Blue’s Clues &You!, a remake of the groundbreaking interactive series, Blue’s Clues, which premieres on Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Brand-New Blue’s Clues & You! Float

“The Macy’s Parade is thrilled to welcome back two fan favorites with the return of our porous pal SpongeBob SquarePants for his 15th flight down the streets of Manhattan, this year with his beloved pet snail Gary along for the ride; and the iconic pup Blue returning to the Parade line-up after more than a decade with a brand-new float celebrating the upcoming series Blue’s Clues & You!,” said Jordan Dabby, producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “Nickelodeon and the Macy’s Parade are synonymous with great family entertainment and we are thrilled to extend that long-time partnership with the new additions of these two beloved characters to the Thanksgiving celebration.”

“The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual event that delights the millions of viewers who line the streets of New York City and millions of families who watch the awe-inspiring spectacle at home,” said Charlotte Castillo, Senior Vice President, Global Franchise Planning, Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products. “This year, kids of all ages will be on the receiving end of a double dose of Nickelodeon nostalgia as two of our most iconic characters make a return to the Parade route, with a brand-new SpongeBob SquarePants balloon and a Blue’s Clues & You! float.”

SpongeBob SquarePants, will make his 15th appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2004, SpongeBob made history as the Parade’s first-ever square balloon and this year, he will take to the sky with his pet snail Gary in tow, as he makes his way through the Big Apple on his Thanksgiving hiatus from Bikini Bottom. The brand-new SpongeBob balloon, which stands at 44-feet high, 36-feet wide and 46-feet long takes on his unique shape with the help of more than 800 internal tie-lines that pull the single chamber sphere balloon into a square.

Nickelodeon’s playful pup Blue, will be making a return to the annual holiday spectacle on a brand-new float that will showcase a 22-foot tall Blue, inspired by the look and feel of the new series Blue’s Clues & You!, a remake of the groundbreaking interactive series, Blue’s Clues. Covered in 13 pounds of glitter, Blue will shine down the Parade route as she greets fans of all ages. Making an appearance alongside Blue will be the new live-action host of Blue’s Clues & You! Joshua Dela Cruz.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will also feature three fan-favorite returning Nickelodeon elements: from their underground lair to the streets of New York City, Nickelodeon’s Heroes in a Half-Shell will take fans on a wild ride to 34th street on a one-of-a-kind Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles float (performance by Ciara); PAW Patrol’s Chase character balloon will show the citizens of New York City that “no job is too big, no pup is too small;” and the Shimmer and Shine float (performance by Debbie Gibson) will transport spectators to the whimsical world of Zahramay Falls with twin genies-in-training Shimmer and Shine.

Viacom International Studios UK Taps Richard Hastings as Head of Non-Scripted Programming

Reflecting the recent surge of business at the content giant’s BAFTA award-winning subsidiary, Viacom International Studios UK (VIS UK) has hired Richard Hastings as its head of non-scripted programming.

In the newly created posting, the former MultiStory Media executive is to oversee the development and production of all non-scripted output for Viacom channels and platforms in the UK as well as third-party partners.

Additionally, the veteran industry exec, who will start in his new post in February 2020, will be responsible for building out a non-scripted team while working closely alongside commissioners and in-house teams to grow existing brands and create new series and specials.

He will report into Jill Offman, Managing Director (MD) for VIS UK.

Most recently, Hastings served as creative director of entertainment and specials at ITV Studios-owned MultiStory Media (formerly Shiver).

During his four-year tenure there, his production credits included All Star Musicals (ITV), Britain’s Best Junior Doctors (BBC), Katie Price: My Crazy Life (Quest Red) and My Millionaire Migrant Boss (C4).

Prior to ITV, Hastings was head of factual entertainment development and executive producer at BBC Entertainment where he created such formats as BBC3′s Don’t Drop the Baby and Young Talent of the Year, and BBC2′s You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. Before this, he was head of development at Prospect Pictures where he devised BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and C4′s Take Away My Takeaway.

“Richard has an impressive track record for creating non-scripted content for both in-house and third-party commissioners and brings with him significant expertise and invaluable experience," said Offman in a statement.

“Richard joins us at a time of ambitious growth and having someone dedicated to non-scripted will not only drive our award-winning production studios to the next level but ensures that we deliver the highest quality programming to audiences across the UK and beyond.”

Hastings added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Jill and the team at Viacom International Studios UK. This is an exciting time for a studio that has already produced a slate of exciting programming and has a clear vision for the future. I can’t wait to play my part in its future success.”

Last week Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) appointed Pierluigi Gazzolo as president of OTT International and VIS.

Gazzolo, who has worked at Viacom since 2009, is currently President of VIMN Americas and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Nickelodeon International. Under his leadership, VIS was launched following the 2016 acquisitions of Telefe and Porta dos Fundos.

In his new role, Gazzolo will initially focus on accelerating the rollout of streaming service Pluto TV across international markets, starting with its Latin America launch in early 2020.

'SpongeBob SquarePants' Was the Most In-Demand Children's TV Series in 2018

Guinness World Records™ 2020 unveils most in-demand TV shows

NEW 2020 Edition features popular shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and Riverdale

New York/Los Angeles – With the upcoming release of Guinness World Records 2020 Edition, available globally today, Guinness World Records partnered with Parrot Analytics, to provide fans around the world with exciting news on their favorite shows. Everyday, fans turn on their screens and welcome actors and actresses into their homes to tell stories that inspire, motivate, encourage and educate. Guinness World Records values these stories, which have created such a demand that they’ve broken record titles in their respective categories.

“There’s no such thing as TV now,” says Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday. “This is a fast-paced, ever-changing landscape, with multiple ways to engage with content, so keeping track definitively of which shows top the popularity charts is impossible without the kind of data provided by Parrot Analytics. Gone are traditional viewing figures; instead, by tracking demand, through streaming, downloading and even chatter on social media, Parrot Analytics has helped Guinness World Records identify the shows that people are genuinely talking about and watching. And the results come as no surprise – the shows we all talk about around the water cooler are those that appear at the top of the lists: Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Rick and Morty, The Voice… all TV – for want of a better word – of the highest caliber.”

The Guinness World Records 2020 Edition covers TV-related record-holders spanning book adaptations, comedy, digital originals, reality, medical drama and Sci-Fi and more. Amongst these categories, are fan favorites such as SpongeBob SquarePantsGame of Thrones, Stranger Things, Riverdale, The Voice and Grey’s Anatomy.

With the expansion of TV formats, this section is all encompassing featuring record-holders from broadcast networks, premium cable and streaming services.

Parrot Analytics, the leading TV content analytics firm specializing in global audience demand measurement, has developed a global platform-agnostic measurement system to quantify how viewers are engaging with TV shows. The resulting demand weighted metric is based upon inputs from video consumption (streaming/download), social media (hashtags, liking, sharing) and research/commentary (media coverage) sources.

This data was used to assist with the ARTS & MEDIA: TV section, one of 11 engaging chapters in this new edition.

The Most in-demand TV Series categories for 2018 included in this year’s edition include:

• Children’s Show: SpongeBob (Nickelodeon)
• Book Adaptation: Game of Thrones (HBO)
• Legal Drama: Suits (USA Network)
• Teen Drama: Riverdale (The CW)
• Comedy: Big Bang Theory (CBS)
• Digital Original: Stranger Things (Netflix)
• Animated: Rick and Morty (Adult Swim, Cartoon Network)
• TV Series: The Walking Dead (AMC)
• Reality: The Voice (NBC)
• Horror: American Horror Story (FX)
• Medical Drama: Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
• Romantic Drama: Outlander (Starz)

This new edition of the best-selling annual celebrates the latest record-breaking achievements with a series of 11 fact-packed chapters, covering a wide spectrum of topics from the classic – amazing animals, jaw-dropping geography and spectacular sporting achievements – to the cutting-edge – including streaming, viral sports and robots & AI.

The Guinness World Records 2020 Edition ($28.95 USD) is available in stores now and online globally.

SpongeBob SquarePants, which was recently greenlit for a 13th season, has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical which is now touring North America and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is seen in more than 208 countries and territories, translated in 55+ languages, and averages more than 100 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants is created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Nickelodeon's is currently in the midst of the network's "Best Year Ever", a year-long global celebration of one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created. The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, coming May 2020.

A CG-animated prequel spin-off series, Kamp Koral, following 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp, is also slated to premiere during Summer 2020.

THQ Nordic and Nickelodeon are slated to release SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, a remake of the much-loved video game, very soon.

From Kidscreen:

Infographic: What shows are the most in-demand globally?

Looking at social media, online research, video interaction and piracy numbers across the globe, Parrot Analytics found the top-10 shows kids are loving right now.

Peppa Pig and SpongeBob SquarePants dominate the competition as the most in-demand kids shows globally this past month, according to Parrot Analytics. According to the research firm’s proprietary data, both the eOne and Nickelodeon shows have more than 10 times the demand that the average kids show did between October 20 and November 18, 2019.

Parrot measures this demand by analyzing social media interactions, social video views, online research for the shows, and piracy numbers. All of this is plugged into a weighted algorithm (i.e. pirating four episodes of a series is worth more than liking a Facebook post), which determines what the demand is like for an average show, and which stand above the rest.

eOne’s other preschool series PJ Masks, follows closely behind Peppa and SpongeBob, with 9.3 times more demand than the average kids show. The top-10 is rounded out by PAW Patrol (8.9 times more), Masha and the Bear (8.4 times), Steven Universe (pictured, 8.1 times), Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (7.9 times), Naruto: Shippuden (7 times), PokΓ©mon (6.5 times) and Teen Titans Go! (5.7 times).

The top seven of those shows all entered into the “outstanding” demand category, which according to Parrot, only 2.7% of the 20,000 shows analyzed (in both the kids and adult space) achieved this past month.

For its kids category, Parrot crunched the numbers on shows targeted at preschool to elementary school-aged kids. It’s not limited only to animated series, but rarely do live-action kids shows crack the global top-10, according to a Parrot spokesperson.
