Nickelodeon And "iCarly" Stars Jeanette McCurdy And Nathan Kress On The Future And Being A Role Model

From Yahoo! TV:
'iCarly' Stars Jeanette McCurdy and Nathan Kress on the Future and Being a Role Model

During a recent interview, cast members Nathan Kress and Jeanette McCurdy from Nickelodeon's hit television show "iCarly" share some of their plans for the future and their thoughts on being role models.

You recently filmed an episode with the hot new band from England, One Direction. What was that like?

Jeanette: Great! They are sweet, easy-going, and fun dudes.

Nathan: It was really fun! We had a great time getting to know them and hang out. The five of us blended with the five of them pretty well, I'd say.

Jeanette, one parent of a fan wanted to know do you see Sam growing up and becoming a good role model on the show? Any hints as to what we can expect to see from Sam in the near future?

Jeanette: Sam's a great role model! She's confident, loyal to her friends, smart, and true to who she is.

You have an album coming out sometime this year. One fan wanted to know how old you were when you starting writing songs?

Jeanette: I was definitely in my single digits. I would write poems and think up melodies to them later.

In one interview you mentioned a number of popular country western singers and bands as being among your favorite musicians and music, and even helping you with the new album. Will there be a strong "country" component to the music?

Jeanette: The music that I've made in the past has had strong contemporary country roots, but I think moving on in music, I will branch out from that a bit.

One fan would like to know what is your favorite "thing" about acting?

Jeanette: Making people feel not alone.

Nathan: My favorite thing about acting is that I can play all kinds of different people. Frankly, I don't consider myself a very interesting person, so the characters I play are usually much more fun.

Nathan, I know you have been a voice in the movies "The Penguins of Madagascar," "Babe: Pig in the City," and "Chicken Little," as well as several other television appearances on shows like "CSI" and "Without a Trace." What is next for you? Miranda has been seen on "Law and Order: SVU" and with your other crime-time drama guest star roles, any chance we could see you on there? Where else should fans look for you in the near future?

Nathan: Honestly, I don't know for sure what will happen after "iCarly ." I'm always looking at scripts, and I still audition for other roles I'm interested in. I'd love to do "SVU"! I'm a big fan of the show, and I worked with Chris Meloni in a Nickelodeon movie several years ago, so it would be fun to see him again.

Do you feel you are a role model to other kids who are watching you on TV? If so, what do you do to live up to that "title"?

Jeanette: Being a role model is cool and a great honor. I'm grateful to be considered one and will live up to that title by encouraging kids to eat their Wheaties and brush their teeth often.

Nathan: I definitely feel like kids do look up to me as a potential role model. It's an honor, but it can also be a burden. I may be on TV, but I'm also a teenager. I don't get it right every time. But I always do my absolute best to stay above board in every way. My fans inspire me to be a better person.

All work and no play, make "Jack and Jill" dull. What are some of your favorite things to do when you aren't working?

Jeanette: I love going to the movie theatre, seeing live comedy, and going to amusement parks.

Nathan: My biggest hobby is airsoft, which is similar to paintball. Essentially, it's military simulation, but the guns shoot plastic BBs. My friends and I go out in the woods or the desert and play all day long! I'm an outdoorsy guy, but I also enjoy the average teenager stuff -- video games, movies, hanging with friends. I'm just a normal guy!

Why Adults Should Watch The Popular Nickelodeon Shows "Victorious" And "iCarly"

Note - This NickALive! blog post contains spoilers about Nickelodeon's 2012 April Fools Day episodes of the hit Nickelodeon shows "iCarly" ('iApril Fools') and "Victorious" ('April Fools Blank'), such as episode details and guest stars, which some NickALive! readers may prefer to avoid as they have not been shown on Nickelodeon UK yet. Please scroll down the page if you wish to continue.

From BuddyTV:
Why Adults Should Watch Nickelodeon's 'Victorious' and 'iCarly'

Do kids today know who Charles Nelson Reilly is? If not, the joke was on them this weekend when Nickelodeon aired special April Fools' Day episodes of two of its biggest shows, Victorious and iCarly. Not only were they a week early, but the random absurdity of the episodes featured a slew of dated film and TV references that the average tween enjoying the show would have no way of understanding.

Much like the best Pixar movies, Victorious and iCarly have something for kids and adults. As a 30-year-old man, I might not be the target demographic of these shows, but when they include references to Saved by the Bell and Back to the Future, I can't help but be entertained.

On Victorious, the April Fools episode was a completely absurd series of unrelated plots and dialogue. There were cameos from Dennis Haskins as Saved by the Bell's Mr. Belding and Drake Bell as himself.

The Bell appearance was one of many in-jokes from the man who created Victorious and iCarly, Dan Schneider, as he also created Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh. The episode also had the Dancing Lobsters from The Amanda Show (another Schneider creation) wandering through the background. If that's not enough, the iCarly episode had the characters watching an episode of Head of the Class, the '80s sitcom Schneider starred in.

There were two masterful vignettes that made Victorious a truly remarkable comedic achievement. First was a parody of The Wizard of Oz that ended when a production assistant came in and told one of the actors he was late for the next scene.

[Video] Victorious: "April Fool's Blank: A Bathroom Classic" [video only available to view in the USA]

The second, and most impressive, was a parody of the classic game show Match Game. Not only was the set and premise perfect, but the cast also did impressions of the show's iconic panelists like Nipsy Russell and Charles Nelson Reilly. As Tori later said when the entire cast said "Where's the beef?," kids won't get that reference.

But adults will, the same way adults will get the iCarly episode which acted like a clip show, only the cast reshot clips from past episodes with new material. There was also an on-going I Dream of Jeannie reference and, at the end, Spencer dressed up like future Doc Brown from Back to the Future (complete with clear tie) and promised to take the cast to a future episode.

Fans who watched both episodes will recognize that the time travel bubble the iCarly gang hops into at the end of the episode actually makes an appearance in the opening credits of the April Fools episode of Victorious.

This nonstop barrage of dated references made Victorious and iCarly must-watch television for TV fans of all ages. Don't be turned off just because they're kids shows on Nickelodeon. After all, in the past, Victorious dedicated an entire episode to a parody of The Breakfast Club while iCarly famously made a reference to HBO's gritty series The Wire. Obviously Dan Schneider and his writing staffs aren't just making kids shows, they're making bizarre, brilliant and creative television that feels more like NBC's Community than some Disney Channel fluff.

Check the Nickelodeon schedule for repeats of Victorious' "April Fools Blank" and iCarly's "iApril Fools."

France Rejects Giant Submarine "SpongeBob SquarePants" Statues

From AFP via Yahoo! News UK and Ireland:
France rejects submarine Sponge Bob statues

Plans to place giant statues of the cartoon character Sponge Bob in the sea off one of France's top natural sites have been scrapped in the face of stiff local opposition.

Nickelodeon, the US children's television network, wanted to place several four-metre (13-foot) statues under water off the Calanques -- deep narrow inlets noted for their biodiversity -- near the southern city of Marseille.

The idea was that children would be able to see them when they took diving lessons in the area, Thierry Reboul of the public relations agency working for Nickelodeon on the project, said Wednesday.

But the plan was scrapped after local activists opposed it, arguing that that the spectacular natural site should not be used for marketing purposes.

Much of the action in the Sponge Bob series centres on the adventures of the title character and his friends in the submarine city of Bikini Bottom.

Local opposition has reportedly prevented the installation of giant statues of cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants at a French beauty spot.

Nickelodeon wanted to position a number of four-metre statues underwater off the Calanques inlets near Marseilles, AFP reports.

It was hoped that children having diving lessons would be able to see the statues.

Activists successfully argued that the natural site should not be used for marketing, PR agent Thierry Reboul confirmed yesterday.

Last year SpongeBob executive Paul Tibbet suggested that the reason people connect with the show is the optimism of the characters.

The show was named 'Favourite Cartoon' at last week's Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
