What Aang's Original Backstory Was Supposed To Be In 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

Aang's backstory in Avatar: The Last Airbender went through some changes when the show was being developed, including aging him up slightly.

Like with other shows and movies, Aang's backstory and character development went through numerous changes before Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered. Aang's journey as the Avatar is rather unique compared to his predecessors as well as his one successor (so far), Korra. Instead of being formally trained in bending all four elements during his teenage years, Aang was notified about being the Avatar and then was subsequently given all the responsibilities associated with the birthright when he was just 12 years old.

It was too much for him to handle at the time - understandably so - and he fled the Southern Air Temple, ultimately finding himself being trapped inside an iceberg near the Southern Water Tribe. Up until he found out who he truly was, Aang was a kid who wanted nothing more than to play with his friends and airbend - but the world had a different path for him to follow. What's interesting is that, while Aang's story remained largely the same in the final version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, his backstory was changed from the original concept.

According to series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko in Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series book, Aang didn't just hibernate in the iceberg for a hundred years, he would've been in there - or somewhere else biding his time - for a thousand years. He would've also been the last survivor of an ancient, technologically advanced nation, which, at the time, played into his clothing being futuristic and his staff having a more metallic look. Of course, things changed and DiMartino and Konietzko tweaked Aang's story to be more believable in the world of Avatar.

Despite the changes to Aang's backstory, the fundamental parts of his origin carried into the main series. Aang was still the last survivor of a civilization (the Air Nomads) and he did come from a peaceful time, now finding himself caught in a war-torn world (the Hundred Year War, which began right when Aang disappeared). Furthermore, Aang's staff, his pet monkey Momo, and his flying bison all found their way into Avatar: The Last Airbender's story.

It was only after DiMartino and Konietzko settled on the concept of the four nations being comprised of elemental benders that they decided to make Aang an Air Nomad. They also imbued him with Tibetan and Buddhist philosophies, which is why he always believed in non-violence. "He was capable of taking down anyone in his way, but because of his nonviolent upbringing with the monks, he was hesitant to fight or hurt others." That line became the cornerstone of Aang's characterization, which followed him up until the series finale when he defeated Fire Lord Ozai.

The pilot of Avatar: The Last Airbender can be watched here, and the recently released second printing of Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Art of the Animated Series is now available from Dark Horse. The follow up, The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series-Book One: Air, will receive a second reprint in February 2021, also from Dark Horse.

Why 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Changed Katara's Original Name (Only To Use It In 'The Legend Of Korra')

The unaired pilot of Avatar: The Last Airbender revealed that Katara’s original name was Kya: why was it changed and reused in Legend of Korra?

The unaired pilot episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender revealed that Katara's original name was Kya — and the book Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Art of the Animated Series explained that Nickelodeon's legal department was responsible for the name change. Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender originally aired from 2005-2008, and the recently released unaired pilot shows the changes that creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko made before the series aired.

A major reveal from the unaired Avatar pilot is that Katara was originally named Kya. Although the name was later reused for Katara's mother, and her daughter in The Legend of Korra, DiMartino and Konietzko have never provided a concrete explanation for the change. However, in their book The Art of the Animated Series, the creators finally explained that pressure from Nickelodeon's legal team forced the producers to change the name — because Kya was already being used elsewhere in a video game.

In 2003, two years before Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered but after the unaired pilot was developed, the video game Kya: Dark Lineage was released. Due to the fact that the protagonist in the game was also named Kya, Nickelodeon's legal team forced the show's producers to pick something else. The Art of the Animated Series reveals that one of the other options for Kya's new name was Kanna, which was later used as the name of Katara's grandmother.

Although Katara's name had to change, DiMartino and Konietzko reused Kya for Katara's mother, and again in Legend of Korra as the name of Katara and Aang's daughter. Luckily, Katara was chosen — and it's the perfect name for the character. Katara is also the Japanese word for "wanting hope" and the Arabic word for "water droplet"; when Katara is written out in season 2, episode 15 "The Tales From Ba Sing Se," the last character in her name (Lā) means "to pull," which is a major part of waterbending. While DiMartino and Konietzko were likely initially disappointed about not being able to use Kya, Katara is ultimately a better fit for the character.

Ironically, Avatar: The Last Airbender has ended up having a much larger cultural footprint than Kya: Dark Lineage. The original, unaired pilot went through significant changes before Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered in 2005, and changing Katara's name is just one of them. Regardless of Kya: Dark Lineage, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were able to reuse Kya in Legend of Korra, and Katara's name ended up being a major part of one of Avatar: The Last Airbender's best characters.

'SpongeBob' EP Hints That 'Kamp Koral' Will Keep Sandy's Original Story Of How She Meets SpongeBob

Ever since the synopsis for the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years was revealed, one of the things that has puzzled fans is about the introduction of Sandy Cheeks.

In SpongeBob SquarePants, SpongeBob and Patrick first meet Sandy Cheeks in the episode "Tea at the Treedome", however, the diving suit-wearing squirrel from Texas who lives in a treedome in Bikini Bottom will also be featured in Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, which would contradict the events in "Tea at the Treedome".

A prequel to SpongeBob SquarePants, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years follows 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at sleepaway camp, with stars Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series.

Although the synopsis doesn't explicitly mention that SpongeBob and Sandy will actually meet in Kamp Koral, fans have speculated that they will, as Carolyn is reprising the role of Sandy for the new series.

However, it doesn't sound like fans need to worry about whether the events of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years will contradict what happened in SpongeBob SquarePants!

When asked on Twitter whether the events Kamp Koral will rewrite the events of SpongeBob SquarePants, long-time SpongeBob SquarePants executive producer Vincent Waller revealed "All will be revealed in the end"!

We won't know what Vincent means until Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years debuts on CBS All Access early next year, but it sounds like Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years will keep the SpongeBob SquarePants timeline intact!

Are you looking forward to Kamp Koral? How do you think the writers are keeping Sandy's story intact? Let me know in the comments!

AHOY! THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!

Update (11/8) - With the brand new SpongeBob film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run being released on Netflix internationally, its given fans a look at how the movie has changes the origin story of how SpongeBob first met Sandy.

In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, as SpongeBob and Patrick embark on a mission to find Gary, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and Squidward reminisce about how they first met SpongeBob.

For Sandy, it's at Camp Coral, when she flies in on a Jellyfish. When she introduces herself to SpongeBob and explains why she's wearing a helmet, she shares her dream to become a scientist, before dismissing the idea. SpongeBob then encourages her to never give up her dream, with Sandy replying "I'd be just as likely to live down here in a glass dome with a tree in it," foreshadowing the future.

YTV Canada to Premiere New Comedy 'Side Hustle' on Friday, November 13

YTV TO PREMIERE SIDE HUSTLE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13

Share it: @YTV @Nickelodeon #SideHustle

YTV Canada will premiere Side Hustle, Nickelodeon's brand-new live-action buddy comedy starring social media sensations and real-life best friends, Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels on Friday, November 13, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. (ET/PT)!

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money when fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Created and executive produced by Dave Malkoff (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat, Victorious) and shot in front of a live studio audience, Side Hustle season one (13 half-hour episodes) was shot in Los Angeles.

Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, Lex, Presley and Munchy enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), who creates an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs, and Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle), who makes sure they keep up with the payments.

“Annie and Jayden are two massively talented stars who kids adore, and we think our audience is going to love seeing them in their own show on Nick,” said Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. “Side Hustle is a new take on the classic buddy comedy, full of wild and hilarious adventures for our unique cast of characters.”

In the premiere episode, “Start Hustling” (#101), the kids get into a jam after accidentally setting a boat on fire. Needing money, they get a job as living mannequins at a fancy store. The kids are excited until they discover they’ll be modeling itchy wool outfits. After spending hours itching and posing, they hatch a plan to close the store early.

LeBlanc is an actress and singer who first came to social prominence in her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley.” She has since amassed over 27 million followers across her own social media platforms, and can be seen starring in Brat’s hit YouTube series Chicken Girls and A Girl Named Jo, and the YouTube Red Originals series We Are Savvy. As a singer LeBlanc’s had six songs in the Top Ten iTunes Pop charts, and two Top 50 Billboard Chart hits. She recently won “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, “Muser of the Year” at the 2018 Shorty Awards, and is currently nominated for “Favorite Female Social Star” at the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2019, LeBlanc joined the Nickelodeon family starring in Annie vs. Hayley, a digital competition show with her younger sister Hayley, and co-hosted Camp Nick alongside Bartels.

Bartels is a singer, actress and dancer who has made a name for herself both on camera and on the stage. Having written and arranged every song she’s released, she debuted her first EP titled “What Really Matters?” last year and released her most recent single “Gameboy” earlier this month. She’s currently on tour opening for pop rock band Echosmith across the U.S., and she went out on a European tour with English singing duo Max & Harvey in 2019. She has a following of almost 12 million across her social media platforms, as well as over 1.6 billion likes on TikTok. On screen, Bartels has played a recurring role Disney Channel’s Coop & Cami Ask the World and lead in the films To The Beat! and its’ upcoming sequel, To The Beat! Back 2 School. She can also be seen in episodes of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Showtime’s Kidding and CBS’s Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

LeBlanc and Bartels co-hosted Nickelodeon's virtually-produced Group Chat this summer, which ranked as the number-one unscripted live-action show on cable with kids 6-11 in the second quarter of 2020. Bartels teamed up with social media star Brent Rivera for season two, which is currently airing on Nickelodeon.

John Beck & Ron Hart (Knight SquadFuller House, Liv and Maddie) serve as executive producers and showrunners. Production of Side Hustle for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Omar Camacho serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

Side Hustle underscores a key element of Nickelodeon's content strategy, to mine social platforms for the talent that kids love, and to superserve today's kids' interest in growing up to be entrepreneurs. Nick's new content slate is informed by the network's ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.
