TV

If you are complaining there's nothing good on TV these days, you're just not paying enough attention. 2012 had an embarrassment of riches, as beloved series like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones came back with strong new seasons, while the ever-compelling Mad Men returned after an extended absence. On the comedy front, behind-the-scenes drama at Community didn't change how great the actual episodes we saw in the spring were, while series like Louie and Girls were daring, edgy and funny in continually compelling ways.

After an absence for several years, we're bringing back the Action category this time out, as series about spies, gladiators and a rogue nuclear sub provided plenty of exciting twists and turns. Meanwhile, there was plenty to love in the animation world, including a new incarnation of the Ninja Turtles and a kick ass sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender. And when it came to sci-fi and horror, there was some terrific thrills and chills in the form of zombies, observers, Time Lords and more.

There was so much to love on TV, we can almost forget we were subjected to Work It as the year began. Almost...

Best TV Animated Series

It's a rare thing for a television spinoff to recapture the success of its source material--rarer still for an animated spinoff. But in the case of The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have really outdone themselves. Not only did this series live up to the name "Avatar," but it also established itself as a wholly unique and self-contained adventure, boasting an immersive world, beautiful animation and a dynamic cast of characters--not to mention some good laughs along the way. From Korra's rich emotional triumphs to the comedic stylings of Bolin and Pabu, The Legend of Korra has something for just about everyone. That is why it earns our pick for Best Animated Series--and you gotta deal with it!

Other Nominees [in IGN's 'Best TV Animated Series' Best of 2012 Award Category]

Nickelodeon's brand new animated original series (Nicktoon) "The Legend of Korra" takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the next Avatar after Aang – a girl named Korra (Janet Varney) who is from the Southern Water Tribe. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water and Fire), Korra seeks to master Air. Her quest leads her to Republic City, the modern "Avatar" world that is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. Korra quickly discovers that the metropolis is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip the city apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin (J.K. Simmons), Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.
