First-Look At Nickelodeon's New 'Shimmer And Shine' Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Float

Behind the brick walls of a top secret building on the banks of a Meadowlands bog in Moonachie can be found a hive of creativity and laughter that yearly delivers an American holiday tradition.

The Macy's Parade Studio, a 75,000-square-foot building on State Street, is the headquarters of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Turkey Day spectacle is in its 91st year and, five new floats will roll out from the Moonachie facility.

Shimmer and Shine by Nickelodeon, Everyone's Favorite Bake Shop by Entenmann's, Harvest in the Valley by Green Giant, Universal Playground by Sour Patch Kids Candy, and Fun House by Spout will debut in this year's parade and have been conceived and executed by an army of designers and engineers, who worked to create innovative floats for each year's parade.

"We have a full-time staff of 30 at the studio," said Susan Tercero, Group Vice President of Special Productions at Macy's.

The floats are designed in early spring and production of the moving works of art starts in April or May. Animation was the biggest innovation for this year's floats, Tercero said.

The Shimmer and Shine float, based on the hit Nickelodeon CG-animated preschool series about two genies-in-training, brings the magical genie land of Zahramay Falls to life, and features an abundance of moving parts. From a motorcycle riding genie, a baby tiger playing hide-and=seek and smoke rising from genie bottles, the float is a sight to behold. Glitter, hanging beads and bright and iridescent colors bedeck the structure, all of which are sure to shine on parade day.

"It's one of the most animated floats we've done," Tercero said.

John Piper, Vice-President of Macy’s Parade Studio, said they had a lot of fun bringing Nickelodeon’s float to life.

“I think we used about 50 pounds of glitter on this float alone, just making everything shine and sparkle all the way through with all of the different characters,” Piper said. “The kids are going to have to look closely because every character is on board but they’re not all in the same spot.”

A surprise float, which was is not at the studio, will also be debuting this year and is sponsored by Macy's. The surprise will stand over 30 feet tall and feature more than 100 Macy's employees from around the country, who auditioned to sing during the parade.

Students from nine different schools and a Girl Scout troop stopped by the studio to see the culmination of 18 months of work. Sarah Rosenberg and Vianna Kopylov, both 10 and students at Dennis B. O'Brien Elementary School in Rockaway Township were blown away by this year's floats.

"I liked learning how the floats were put together and work," Rosenberg said, who was on her second visit to the studio.

For Kopylov, it was her first time there and said everything inside was big and pretty and cool. Her favorite float? The Green Giant because of the scope of detail. Rosenberg's favorite was the Bake Shop, with its bright colors and tasty looking treats.

But for John Piper, choosing a favorite is like choosing a favorite grandchild. He can lovingly describe the details of each float and what makes them so exciting and unique.

"Whoever is sitting on your knee at that moment is your favorite," Piper said with a laugh.

Piper said the parade doesn't end with Santa Claus for the workers and creators. Before the parade even starts, the organizers and producers and creative teams are already working on the following year's parade.

From start to finish, it takes about 18 months to plan the parade and they look for ways to top themselves, said Tercero.

"We're always thinking about what we can do next year," Tercero said, adding that creative team always tries to build on its experience in thinking ahead. "You have to be able to be current and relevant and find new stuff and new ways to impress and surprise and delight the audience."

The 91st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will also feature the debut of a brand-new PAW Patrol balloon featuring Chase the heroic rescue pup from Nickelodeon and Spin Master's hit CG-animated preschool series, and the return of two Nickelodeon fan-favorite returning Nickelodeon elements: the holiday-themed SpongeBob SquarePants square-shaped giant balloon; and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles float featuring Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo against a spectacular New York cityscape. Joining the Heroes in A Half-Shell aboard the float will be Kat Graham, who will voicing April O’Neil in Nickelodeon's upcoming brand-new 2D animated TMNT series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, set to debut in 2018. Full information about Nickelodeon's 91st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade floats and balloons can be found here.

Taking place on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, the 91st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade steps off from 77th Street and Central Park West at 9 a.m. ET/PT and will be broadcast nationwide on NBC-TV from 9:00 a.m. – Noon in all time zones.

Nickelodeon USA Acquires 'Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V' Seasons 2 & 3; To Debut On Nicktoons USA During Early 2018

Nickelodeon USA has announced the exciting news in a email to ToonZone Forums member '4Kids4EverFandom' that Nickelodeon USA has picked up the broadcast rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V seasons two and three, and that Nicktoons USA will start to premiere the new seasons from early 2018!

Leading up to the debut of the second and third seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V, Nicktoons will continue to air brand-new episodes from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V season one Sundays at 8:00am ET/PT.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V, the fourth main spin-off anime series in the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, takes place in the near future place called Paradise City where Leo Corporation creates new advancements to Solid Vision that gives life to Duel Monsters. New advancements to Solid Vision give physical mass to monsters, environments, and allow players to interact directly with them. It also gives birth to challenging Action Duels. Action Duels allow duelists to traverse environments to locate Action Cards to help them in a pinch.

The story follows Yuya Sakaki who is a second year middle school student at Paradise City's You Show Duel School. Yuya's father, Yusho Sakaki, disappeared three years ago when he was scheduled for a Duel against the Action Duel Champion and was deemed as a coward who ran away. To clear his father's name, Yuya faces off against the current Action Duel champion and awakens a new power from his pendant known as Pendulum Summoning.

Yuya strives to master the art of Pendulum Summoning to become a great Dueltainer like his father. Yuya met a mysterious black masked Duelist who greatly resembles him named Yuto, who reveals that the world is split into four dimensions. Three of the dimension names come from the summoning methods used in the respective world. The names of the dimensions are Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Standard, which is the center of the four dimensions where Yuya lives in. Yuya and his friends become involved in the interdimensional conflict after Duelists from Duel Academy of the Fusion Dimension invade the Arc League Championship. Duel Academy Duelists turn several Duelists into cards under orders from Leo Akaba, Declan's father whose ambition is to unite the four dimensions. Declan forms the Lancers, a group of elite Duelists capable of fighting Duel Academy with Duelists selected based on the result of the championship to stop Leo.

Following the disappearance of Yuya's childhood friend, Zuzu Boyle, during the championship, Yuya and the other Lancers go to City of Synchro Dimension in hope to gain allies before Duel Academy invade it. To prove their worth as Duelists to the people of Synchro Dimension, the Executive Council of City signed them into Friendship Cup where Duelists compete in Turbo Duels for the right to challenge the Duel King, Jack Atlas.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V seasons two and three will see Yuya and his friends battling in the Synchro Dimension, Xyz Dimension and the Fusion Dimension.

Paramount Plans 'Are You Afraid Of The Dark?' Movie; 'It' Writer Gary Dauberman To Pen Script

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, the co-writer of It is adapting Are You Afraid Of The Dark? into a movie!

Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the hit early 1990s anthology show that aired on Nickelodeon, is getting the big-screen treatment!

Paramount Pictures new Paramount Players arm has hired Gary Dauberman, the writer behind the New Line horror movies It and Annabelle: Creation, to pen the script and produce the project!

The conceit of Afraid of the Dark was that the stories in each episode were campfire tales told by a group of teens who called themselves the Midnight Society. The tales ranged from modern takes on urban legends and fairy tales to stories involving creatures such as vampires and aliens. For instance, "The Tale Of The Ghastly Grinner" practically introduced the world to Pennywise's equally creepy joker cousin.

The original Canadian horror/fantasy-themed anthology series was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, and was picked up by Nickelodeon USA in 1991, though it didn’t debut until SNICK’s launch on Saturday, Aug. 15, 1992. The show ran until April 1996, and a revival series with new writers, directors, writers and cast members was produced by Nickelodeon from 1999 to 2000.

Some of the Midnight Society players have actually gone on to become recognizable actors you're probably familiar with. JoAnna Garcia Swisher of Reba and Kevin (Probably) Saves the World fame was a lucky member. Rachel Blanchard, who you might know from both the Clueless and Fargo TV adaptations, also appeared in a recurring role. Are You Afraid of the Dark?'s ever-changing cast roster was pretty star-studded. Tia and Tamera Mowry, Will Friedle, Neve Campbell, Hayden Christensen, Jay Baruchel, Tatyana Ali, Melissa Joan Hart, Jewel Staite, and two-time Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling are just a few of the household names that lent their acting skills to the anthology.

"The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We're going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves," Dauberman tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and its unclear if favorite characters such as Dr. Vink (Aron Tager) and Sardo (That's SarDO! No mister; accent on the doh!; Richard Dumont) will return, however, Tracking Board that Matt Kaplan is on board to produce.

Paramount Players is a new division at Paramount Pictures that is led by Awesomeness founder Brian Robbins and focuses on contemporary talent and properties for young audiences while drawing upon the vast resources of the Viacom brands. Nickelodeon is one of those Viacom brands and is already developing a live-action Dora the Explorer movie, based on Nickelodeon's hit animated preschool series, through Paramount Players with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes producing.

Dauberman has emerged this year as one of the hottest scribes in town. He is one of three writers credited on the remake of It, which became a massive hit when it debuted this past September, making $683 million worldwide, and is set to return for the sequel. He also recently wrote Annabelle: Creation, which has scared up $305 million, and is on board to pen The Nun, which, like Creation, is an extension of The Conjuring universe. He is currently producing the horror movie The Children for New Line.

Dauberman is repped by ICM Partners, Industry Entertainment and Felker Toczek.

Chris Young Discusses the Future Role of Immersive Technology at Nickelodeon

Since the late 1960s when inventor Douglas Engelbart created the first virtual reality headset, consumers have been itching at the opportunity to place themselves in an immersive world. Unfortunately, the technology has always been too bulky, too expensive, and too lacking to do so — until now. Within in the past year, companies like Facebook, HTC, and Microsoft have announced plans of releasing affordable standalone VR headsets for around $200, meaning that consumers will soon be able to experience the word of VR — beyond attaching a phone to a pair of goggles — without having to use a whole month’s pay to buy it. With virtual reality becoming more accessible for the average consumer, and augmented reality — VR’s more popular sister — deepening its roots in the entertainment industry, creators have been faced with the challenge of developing content that utilizes the features of immersive formats while remaining entertaining for the user.

Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, a division of Nickelodeon designed to identify and experiment with new and emerging technologies, has been at the forefront of developing new entertainment experiences across VR, AR, and AI for the entertainment company.

In VideoInk's latest ‘5 Questions,’ Young discusses the role of immersive tech in Nickelodeon’s future, the importance of positional tracking in immersive storytelling, and the most important thing to remember when creating immersive content for children.

Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP), Entertainment Lab

VideoInk: What role will immersive technology play in Nickelodeon’s future, and what steps is the company taking to get there?

Chris Young: It’s hard to know exactly where entertainment is headed as it relates to immersive technology. That’s the reason why the lab exists – to explore what those possibilities might be. When you think about virtual reality and what it’s really great at doing, it provides the user with the opportunity to be fully present or immersed inside of these worlds. At Nickelodeon, we are world builders and we author these environments and universes with our characters, and it lends itself to virtual reality. It’s a very powerful idea for a creator to be able to put their audience inside the worlds they create and let them interact with the characters that they love.

Where does Nickelodeon see the most opportunity in: AR, VR, or AI — and why?

Right now, the opportunity is equal across all these technologies because we don’t exactly know which ones are going to emerge as the most readily available. A combination of all these will exist in some form or another, and we believe we can be successful within all these different platforms. We’ve seen the recent launch of ARKit and ARCore and you can imagine how quickly those technologies will scale with all the hardware already in place. Virtual reality, in a very short time, has come a very long way, so that is another great opportunity to see that this hardware will become more widely accessible. AI has a tremendous foothold in the future of the ability to interact with characters and have a different kind of entertainment experience that we couldn’t have before we could artificially drive character interaction.

Due to its high cost, VR is known to be one of the more inaccessible formats on the market. How does Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab plan to overcome this obstacle?

It’s not our job to overcome the barriers that exist right now in VR – it’s about trying to understand the best way to author for these platforms, and also understand what kind of entertainment experiences really work for them. I won’t argue that the high-end VR systems are mostly out of reach for our audience, as that is the exact reality, but increasingly those costs are coming down and that hardware is becoming more readily accessible. When the time is right, and within the context of kids being able to choose those experiences and that hardware along with their parents, we’ll let them make the decision for themselves.

Nickelodeon Slime Zone VR experience

The industry is starting to see the emergence of standalone VR headsets, but most come without positional tracking, meaning the user can’t interact with the content. How important is this (if at all) when it comes to telling stories through the format?

It’s really important – anything that makes the user feel more immersed and fully present inside of the virtual space is the key to creating something that is really compelling and entertaining. I am a big believer in six degrees of freedom and the ability to touch and manipulate objects in the space. All of these things will help. The friction that exists around cameras that you have to set up in the room to track your location need to go away to make a more seamless experience. That said, even in its current form, it’s very transformative and that’s what makes it exciting.

What is the most important thing to remember when creating immersive content for children?

Like anything we do, it has to be entertaining and fun, and it has to align with our mission to make the world a more playful place. We really think about how we can provide that value and create that kind of experience with this technology.
