Harriet the Spy literally broke the mould when it was released as Nickelodeon's first-ever theatrical movie in 1996. An updated version of Louise Fitzhugh's best-selling 1964 children's novel, the film follows sixth-grade outcast Harriet (Michelle Trachtenberg, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), an only child who has mostly been raised by her nanny, Golly (Rosie O'Donnell, Kids' Choice Awards, Sleepless In Seattle, A League of Their Own), Golly, who encourages her creative pursuits. Carefully taking notes in her private notebook, Harriet makes clever and cruel observations about her subjects, including her best friends, would-be scientist Janie (Vanessa Lee Chester) and overburdened Sport (Gregory Smith). When a snobby girl a school, Marion, gets her hands on Harriet's special notebook and makes its contents known to the whole school. Could Adventure City in PAW Patrol: The Movie be based on Vancouver?

Nickelodeon's beloved CG-animated preschool series PAW Patrol follows the adventures of a pack of heroic rescue pups—Chase, Marshall, Rubble, Skye, Rocky, Zuma, Everest and Tracker—who are led by a tech-savvy boy named Ryder. Together, they work hard to show the people of Adventure Bay that "no job is too big, no pup is too small!"

Until 2021’s blockbuster release of PAW Patrol: The Movie, audiences were only really familiar with the quaint seaside village of Adventure Bay and a handful of its adult residents. However, the film introduced fans all to neighbouring Adventure City, which seems to be based on the real life city of Vancouver in Canada, according to Urbanized.

For those that haven’t yet watched the movie, let me set the scene for you. It opens with a Canadian truck driver driving a tanker of maple syrup, and he crashes on the town's suspension bridge, which resembles the real life Lions Gate Bridge.

Originally built by the Guinness family (yes, the beer people) to pave the way for the development of the North Shore, the Lions Gate Bridge has been synonymous with this city since its opening in 1938, and is an iconic and often-photographed landmark in Vancouver.

Evidence point number two: the Adventure City subway. Although the interior might look the same as any other subway, the blue bottom, yellow line, and grey upper painted for the exterior livery was unmistakably Vancouver’s SkyTrain.

And while Vancouverites have yet to see a mayor attempt to send the train in loop-the-loops, the truth might not exactly be far off around here.

Although the subtlety of the SkyTrain’s colours might only be recognizable to Vancouverites, Mayor Humdinger’s fireworks scene looks based on the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The building in real life has had many lives. Opened in 1906 as a courthouse, in the 1980s it was renovated, along with Robson Square, by the renowned late Arthur Erickson and became the building and plaza residents know and love today.

No Fun City

But probably the most convincing “tell” was Mayor Humdinger’s speech about Adventure City, which many Vancouverites would likely consider spot-on for Vancouver.

“You know, they call this place Adventure City. But what’s so adventurey about it? The truth is, it’s boring. Libraries? Boring. Museums? Boring. Little dog parks? Definitely.”

As Vancouver is known for its landmark Library Square, a smattering of museums, and the label of being “adventurey” but a “No Fun City” — a description that’s proven to be very hard to shake over the years — it seems Mr. Mayor’s speech was aimed nearly directly the fair Canadian city.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that Adventure City is a homage to Vancouver, as PAW Patrol is produced by Toronto-based Spin Master Entertainment, with the movie animated by Montreal-based Mikros.

Nickelodeon Germany Unveils Programming Highlights for 2022

2022 is set to be another big year on Nickelodeon Germany (Deutschland)!


The highlights blast off at the end of January with a space special, where, in addition to encores of The Astronauts, local scientists and influencers will take part in Nick's Galatic Chat, where they'll teach viewers and answer questions about space.

As with every year, March and April will be dedicated to Nickelodeon's 2022 Kids' Choice Awards, where kids get to vote for their local and international stars, movies and TV shows, plus viewers can look forward to plenty of music, partying and, of course, slime.

In spring will see the debut of the long-awaited SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off The Patrick Star Show. The series follows a teenage Patrick, who still lives with his family and hosts his own show.

Seasonal specials such as Easter and Halloween will be followed by other new show launches, such as the the puppet-based comedy The Barbarian and the Troll, the animated Middlemost Post, as well as the live action highlights Overlord and the Underwoods and Warped!.

ViacomCBS Int'l and Swiss Media Company CH Media Sign Extensive Multi-Year Strategic Partnership

ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) and Switzerland’s CH Media have signed a extensive multi-year strategic partnership that includes a Nickelodeon channel takeover, access to a large content library, and a new co-production agreement.


Starting on October 1, CH Media will take over all operations of children’s channel Nickelodeon Switzerland (Schweiz). The linear net currently airs kids programming between 6 a.m. and 8:15 p.m., sharing a feed with Nickelodeon Austria. Following the takeover, Nick Schweiz will continue to offer the best children's programming from 06.00 to 20.15, with CH Media planning to launch a new family block called 7+ Family that will air in the evenings. Goldbach Media will be responsible for ad sales for both Nick Schweiz and 7+ Family.

CH Media has also licensed 1,400 episodes of kids, youth and comedy content from ViacomCBS for its new Swiss streaming platform OnePlus. Some of the programming includes PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants and Top Wing, which will be available on the streamer’s pitch+ children’s section. OnePlus will also create a dedicated Nick+ section featuring content especially for children and families.

Finally, ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) will co-produce several in-house shows with CH Media for German-speaking regions. These originals will air exclusively on OnePlus in Switzerland, as well as on ViacomCBS TV channels and platforms in Germany and Austria.

According to the schedules on Teleboy, 7+ Family will also air some Nickelodeon shows, such as SpongeBob SquarePants (Oct. 2) while Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Fairly OddParents will air on Wednesday, October 6 after Shrek.

Herr Elsener, CH Media Entertainment entdeckt Kinder als neue Zielgruppe. Weil Sie selber welche haben?
Nein, das ist natürlich ein strategischer Entscheid. Für unseren neuen Streaming-Dienst OnePlus schaffen wir mit dem Deal mit ViacomCBS eine Streaming-Welt für Kinder. Wir erhalten Zugang zu unzähligen Top-Programminhalten von Nickelodeon, dem neben Disney weltweit grössten Produzenten von Kinderprogrammen. Gleichzeitig werden wir mit dem Sender Nick Schweiz auch die lineare TV-Welt bespielen. Wir holen die junge Zielgruppe also auf allen Vektoren ab.

Konkret: CH Media übernimmt per 1. Oktober den Betrieb des Kinder-TV-Senders Nick Schweiz (persoenlich.com berichtete). Wie muss man sich eine solche Betriebsübernahme vorstellen?
Das bedeutet, dass wir den Sender Nick Schweiz ab dem 1. Oktober aus unseren neuen Studios in Zürich-Oerlikon betreiben werden. Heute wird der Sender aus Berlin betrieben.

In der Mitteilung heisst es, Nick Schweiz teile sich den Programmplatz mit dem neuen Sender «7+ Family». Holen Sie jetzt Nick Schweiz zu sich auf den neuen Sender – oder sendet 7+ Family auf dem bisherigen Sendeplatz von Nick Schweiz?
Letzteres. Nick Schweiz sendet bis 20.15 Uhr Kinderprogramm, ab 20.15 Uhr übernimmt 7+ mit einem Familienprogramm.

Wie sieht dieses aus?
Durch unsere Partnerschaften mit allen Hollywood-Studios haben wir einen tollen Katalog an Spielfilm-Highlights für beste Familienunterhaltung. Von den «Minions» über «Ice Age» bis hin zu Klassikern wie «Kevin – Allein zu Haus» ist alles dabei.

Mit dem Sendernamen 7+ Family geben Sie dem Fernsehzuschauer eine Orientierungshilfe. Wann erhalten die anderen Sender einen solchen Zusatz?
Die anderen Sender – also 3+ bis 6+ sowie TV24, TV25 und S1 – erhalten keinen solchen Zusatz. Sie sind bestens etabliert und bekannt. 3+ ist unser «Flaggschiff» und zeigt zusammen mit TV24 unsere Eigenproduktionen, Free-TV Premieren und die grössten Sport-Highlights. 4+ ist der Spielfilmsender, 5+ unser Seriensender, TV25 unser Frauensender, S1 der Best-Ager-Sender und 6+ unser experimentierfreudiger Sender.

«Dass man sich kennt, hat ein vertrauensvolles Verhandlungsklima geschaffen»

2012 wechselten Sie zu 3+ – und Sie waren zuvor Vice President Commerce für Mittel- und Nordeuropa beim Kindersender Nickelodeon. Nutzten Sie beim heute kommunizierten Deal Insiderinfos oder alte Kontakte?
Im Laufe eines Arbeitslebens das aufgebaute Beziehungsnetz zu pflegen und die Erfahrungen in sein neues Arbeitsumfeld einzubringen, ist nie verkehrt. Dass man sich kennt, hat ein vertrauensvolles Verhandlungsklima geschaffen. Entscheidend beim jetzigen Deal ist aber der strategische Fit für beide Partner.

Ich las auf Wikipedia unter dem Eintrag «Nick Schweiz», dass Sie Geschäftsführer sind. Wurde dieser Eintrag einfach nie aktualisiert – oder blieben Sie tatsächlich in all den Jahren seit Ihrem Abgang weiterhin Geschäftsführer?
Das ist selbstverständlich längst veraltet. Das ist zehn Jahre her.

Wenn ab 1. Oktober CH Media am Drücker ist: Wie wird sich das Kinderprogramm auf Nick Schweiz verändern?
Nick Schweiz ist einer der erfolgreichsten Kindersender, die Hit-Formate von Nickelodeon werden das Programm selbstredend weiterhin prägen. Ein Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf dem Aufbau von 7+ Family. Hier wollen wir beste Familienunterhaltung bieten.

Sind «Kinder» eigentlich eine einzige Zielgruppe – oder unterscheiden Sie hier nochmals nach Alter?
Man unterscheidet in verschiedene Unterzielgruppen, je nach Alter. Es gibt die Vorschulkinder bis zu sechs Jahren, ab sechs Jahren unterscheiden wir in Dreijahresschritten. Je nach Altersklasse haben die Kinder andere Vorlieben, was sie gerne schauen oder streamen.

Einen Kinder-TV-Sender betreiben Sie ja nicht aus Spass. Lässt sich Werbung in einem Kinderprogramm gut verkaufen?
Der Kinderwerbemarkt ist sehr solide, aber überschaubar mit relativ wenigen Werbetreibenden wie zum Beispiel Hasbro. Das grösste Wachstum liegt aber nicht im Bereich der Werbung, sondern bei den Streaming-Abos. Das ist auch unser Hauptaugenmerk mit OnePlus. Wir gehen davon aus, dass wir mit den Inhalten von Nickelodeon viele zusätzliche Abonnenten, meist Familien mit Kindern, gewinnen können.

«Man sollte Kinder beim Medienkonsum begleiten»

Haben Sie kein schlechtes Gewissen, schon die Kleinsten zum Konsum verführen zu wollen?
Ich erinnere ich mich an eine Vorlesung in meinem Studium an der Universität Zürich zum Thema Kinder und Medien. Quintessenz: Man sollte Kinder nicht vor Medien schützen oder sie ihnen gar verbieten. Man sollte sie beim Medienkonsum begleiten. Altersgerechte Inhalte können dabei edukativ sogar sehr wertvoll sein.

Weiter lizenziert CH Media 1400 Kinder-, Jugend- und Comedy-Inhalte für den Schweizer Streaming-Dienst OnePlus. Warum nicht für Nick Schweiz?
Die Inhalte von Nickelodeon werden sowohl auf Nick Schweiz im Free-TV zu sehen sein wie auch zum werbefreien Streamen auf OnePlus. Auf OnePlus werden wir zusätzlich auch Jugend- und Comedy-Inhalte aus dem grossen Programmfundus von ViacomCBS zeigen.

Ebenfalls exklusiv für OnePlus soll «eine Reihe von Originals» koproduziert werden. Was werden das für Inhalte sein?
Um welche Originals es sich handelt, möchte ich noch nicht verraten. Es sind beliebte internationale Formatadaptionen für unsere Kernzielgruppe der jungen Erwachsenen.

CH Media gibt Startschuss für neuen Familiensender 7+

Die Kooperation zwischen CH Media und ViacomCBS trägt erste Früchte: Am Freitagabend geht der neue nationale TV-Sender 7+ mit einem täglichen Familienprogramm an den Start.

Am 1. Oktober feiert 7+ mit den US-Filmkomödien «Der rosarote Panther» 1 und 2 Premiere. CH Media will jeweils an Freitagabenden Familienfilme zeigen, während am Samstag «SpongeBob Schwammkopf» an der Reihe ist, schreibt das Medienhaus über das Programm des neuen Senders.

Am Sonntag stehen Film- oder Serienklassiker wie «Sex and the City – der Film» und «Nie wieder Sex mit der Ex» an. Und unter der Woche sollen abwechslungsweise Comedy-Central-Formate, die «Simpsons» oder Kinderfilme über die Bildschirme flimmern.

7+ teilt seinen Platz mit dem Kindersender Nick Schweiz (ehemals Nickelodeon), der von 6 Uhr morgens bis 20.15 Uhr läuft und ebenfalls neu von CH Media betrieben wird. Nach Nick Schweiz folgt das Programm von 7+.

Im Sommer gab CH Media eine mehrjährige Kooperation mit dem US-Medienkonzern ViacomCBS bekannt. Der Deal umfasst neben dem Betrieb von Nick Schweiz die Lizenzierung von Kinder-, Jugend- und Comedyinhalten von ViacomCBS für den CH-Media-Streamingdienst Oneplus.

Zudem ist mit dem ViacomCBS-Studio VIS die Produktion von deutschsprachigen Originals geplant, die in der Schweiz zuerst exklusiv auf Oneplus laufen sollen.

Der Familiensender 7+, welcher letzten Oktober in der Prime-Time startete und sich mit dem Day-Time-Programm Nickelodeon Schweiz einen Sendeplatz teilt, entwickelt sich äusserst positiv. Im Vergleich zum letzten Vorjahresquartal steigerte der Sender den Primetime-Marktanteil in der werberelevanten Zielgruppe in den letzten drei Monaten 2021 um sensationelle 317 Prozent  gegenüber dem damaligen Prime-Time-Programm von Nickelodeon Schweiz.
