Avatar's Spiritbending May Have Been Invented by Its First Trans Hero

Avatar Legends introduces fans to a transgender character who may be responsible for the creation of waterbending's most valuable sub-skill.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had progressive themes and The Legend of Korra advanced them further, but both were constrained by cultural norms and studio intervention that often left them incapable of broaching topics they would otherwise readily discuss in the open. Perhaps the most controversial was the relationship between Korra and Asami that culminated in the same-sex couple getting together in the Korra series finale. When the episode ended just short of a kiss, it was clear there were still strides to be made.

Now the core book for the new role-playing game entitled Avatar Legends is openly discussing matters of gender and sexuality previously unmentioned in the franchise, the progress of the series since then is abundantly clear. The core book introduces multiple characters who do not conform to traditional gender assignments, and one of them sheds a fascinating new light on the history of spiritbending.

The history of spiritbending in Avatar has been explored before, but only briefly. First introduced to fans in the second season of The Legend of Korra, the ability seemed to be unique to Korra's uncle Unalaq shortly before the Waterbender passed the art on to her (much like her father put his unique stamp on waterbending). Spiritbending proves invaluable in combating the dark spirits that beset the Southern Water Tribe, using nearby sources of water to cycle around a spirit and quell their anger so they could dissipate peacefully. There were Firebenders who seemed to display a similar ability when they healed Korra's spirit when she washed up on their shore later that season, but outside of those instances, there were few insights into the nature of the ability.

Spiritbending was probably invented during Korra's era, as the Kyoshi novels intimated that the art form did not exist during the time of the previous Water Tribe Avatar, Kuruk. Kuruk communed with Kyoshi during The Shadow of Kyoshi and told her how she and the Fire Sage Nyahitha searched exhaustively for any means of resisting dark spirits peacefully -- but their endeavors came up empty. But Avatar Legends reveals that one spiritbender did exist before Korra during Roku's Era, and her name was Makittuq.

Makittuq is described by the core book as a powerful Waterbender who developed a rare bending ability that could calm out of balance spirits. The mention stands out as the earliest instance in the Avatar timeline that a practitioner of the ability demonstrated the spiritual art. And that proves to be one of the least interesting things about Makittuq, as the personal struggles that inform her character prove even more fascinating.

As a member of the highly traditional Northern Water Tribe, Makittuq knowing from an early age that she was assigned the wrong gender put her at odds with both her culture and her family. The Northern Water Tribe were known during Aang's era -- over a century later -- to strictly adhere to firm differences according to gender, so in Makittuq's time those struggles were likely even greater. Her difficulties with people became the basis for her relationship with spirits that helped her develop the art of spiritbending.

Korrasami 4 eva!

Makittuq isn't the only diverse character in the new RPG. Avatar Legends includes Dalja Ro, whose own realization they did not conform to their assigned gender during Korra's era led to their use of gender-neutral pronouns. The core book also features numerous same-sex relationships, many of which prove key to plot points in the various campaigns, and the sheer variety of sexuality and gender confirms just how far the franchise has come since the constrained days of Legend of Korra's finale. It's no longer just featuring morally complex characters, but characters who are complex in every way possible.

Trans characters and valuable pieces of canon history go hand-in-hand in Avatar Legends, which explores the broad varieties of human life alongside its own lore (after a brief paper shortage). Fans of the franchise can lose themselves in the mythology the tome contains, and more people than ever can identify with a series increasingly reflective of the fans who care for it so much. Avatar Legends is produced by Magpie Games and Avatar Studios.

Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon, followed by four seasons of its spinoff series, The Legend of Korra. While the original version of The Last Airbender was animated, a live-action adaptation is in production at Netflix. The budget for the eight-episode first season of Netflix's Avatar is running over $120 million. The series had previously been adapted into a live-action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan in 2010, although its was not well received by either critics or fans.

A recently released role-playing game, Avatar Legends, has been giving fans new insights into the world of the two series. The core book for the game introduced several new historical elements to the world, including the history of chi-blocking and the history of the Dai Li. Additionally, the core book introduces some of the franchise's first gender non-conforming characters, including a transgender character who may have invented spiritbending. Other media, including novels such as The Shadow of Kyoshi, give even more detail about how bending works, even detailing how it can be affected by the environment.

New photos from the set of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation reveal a look at the live-action Netflix remake.

On the Avatar: The Last Airbender Subreddit, user DripMaster926 posted photos from the set of Avatar: The Last Airbender in Vancouver, British Columbia, which you can see below. While the photos don't feature any actors, they do show greenscreens and what seems to be the gate of a fortress. It's unknown at this time just what scene was being filmed and how it might factor into the live-action series. The filming notice also mentions that season one is still subtitled "Trade Winds".

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for three seasons from 2005 until 2008 on Nickelodeon. The series is set in a world in which some people, known as benders, are capable of wielding one of the four elements: Earth, Fire, Air and Water. However, the Avatar is capable of using all four. The main plot of Avatar: The Last Airbender saw Aang -- the titular Avatar and last Airbender -- and his friends working to stop the Fire Nation from conquering the world. Avatar: The Last Airbender is generally considered one of the best animated series ever. A sequel series, The Legend of Korra, ran from 2012 until 2014. Both series have since continued in the form of graphic novels.

Announced in 2018, Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender began filming around November and is expected to wrap in 2022. The series features Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Daniel Dae Kim, who is known for his work on such projects as Lost and Hawaii Five-O, will play Fire Lord Ozai.

Originally, DiMatino and Konietzko were working on the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender with Netflix. However, the two creators left the project in 2020, citing creative differences. In a statement, DiMartino did not discount the possibility that Netflix's adaptation would be good, but did say it wasn't his and Konietzko's vision for the project. Netflix later responded to their departure by saying it was confident in their project and team.

Developed by Albert Kim, Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will run for eight hour-long episodes. The project does not have a release date at this time.
