Nickelodeon's West Coast 'Hub' Takes Shape In Burbank, California

Earlier this year, the Nickelodeon Animation Studio broke ground on a new 110,000-square-foot expansion project on Olive Avenue, a project that's expected to create the West Coast "hub" for the network's animation and live-action production teams.

The project's steel skeleton is taking shape on the corner of Olive and Lake Street. Late last month, Brian Foote, senior planner for the city, told the Burbank Planning Board "They're moving along quite quickly." Foote also noted that much of the building is being fabricated off-site and pieced together on location.

Nickelodeon began construction of a new studio on the corner of Lake Street and Olive Avenue that will expand its footprint from 72,000 square feet into 190,000 square feet and will make the Burbank location the kids' cable network's West Coast hub. "It's fairly impressive," Foote added, in reference to the scale of the structure, which is more than 70 feet tall.

The state-of-the-art, five-story glass structure will expand the studio complex from its existing 72,000 square feet to 190,000 square feet when it opens in late 2016, a company spokesman said.

That opening will coincide with Nickelodeon Animation's 25th anniversary, said Russell Hicks, president of content development and production for Nickelodeon Group. The networks three original animated series, "Rugrats", "Doug" and "Ren & Stimpy" premiered on Sunday 11th August 1991 - and one of the goals for the new facility is to draw upon that history.

"It's kind of like the 25 years leads up to the opening," Hicks said.

While the building may seem to be going up quickly for some people, Hicks said, "construction doesn't go fast enough for me."

The building is being constructed next to the location where Nickelodeon has been since 1998. When the expansion project was approved in March 2014, Planning Board members said the studio has been a good neighbor throughout the years.

Hicks said Nickelodeon's home base is Burbank, adding that the area is full of talented people. However, while the building was the right size for the studio in the 1990s, its "10-fold" growth since has left employees spread throughout L.A., including locations in Glendale and Santa Monica.

The new building will allow the company to bring all of its creative personnel back under one roof, Hicks said, and because it will house both animation and live-action teams, it will be known as simply Nickelodeon Studios.

Katelyn Balach, a studio spokeswoman, said almost 700 employees work at the Burbank location now. That will increase to more than 800 once the expansion is complete, "with room to grow." A new five-story parking structure with 450 parking spaces will accommodate the additional workers.

When completed, the exterior of the building will feature clear glass vertical "fins." However, Hicks said some of the key features are not about the architecture, but the artists it will house.

Not only will an expanded courtyard join the new and existing buildings, it will feature iconic artwork from shows that the younger employees who grew up watching Nickelodeon love, he said.

Creative spaces on each floor will be stocked with arts-and-crafts materials to allow the artists to express themselves in any medium they want, while a music room and game room will also allow them other outlets. There will also be an 88-seat theater for showing their work. An app will connect employees and provide an overview of events and daily activities.

The new campus will be open to more public tours, Hicks said, as well as more industry events, such as lectures and open houses. Its features will "tell the story" of Nickelodeon's history, he said.

"It'll be mostly celebrating the artists," he added.

Having those creative workers all in one space will hopefully lead to introductions and collaborations that can't happen with teams dispersed as they are now, Hicks said, fulfilling "the vision of being a creative engine and powerhouse."

Nickelodeon And Kiddy Rides Partner For Range Of Rides Based On Nick Properties

Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids and families, has teamed up with Northern Leisure's Kiddy Rides to produce a range of rides based on the brand's extensive portfolio!

This is a new venture for Nickelodeon as it's the first time the company has ever worked with any partners within the kiddie ride sector.

"We are really excited to be working with such a high profile partner as Nickelodeon", says Gareth Jones, Northern Leisure Group's Production Manager. "We have acquired the rights to produce a range of rides from the Nickelodeon brand including "SpongeBob", ["Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"], "Paw Patrol" and "Dora"!" The kiddie ride specialists will be working hard with Nick. to release the rides one by one over the next few years.

The first ride to be produced is "SpongeBob SquarePants". As all Northern Leisure's rides, it has been designed, developed and produced in the UK in a high quality gel coat. The ride features the iconic character SpongeBob SquarePants along with his pet Snail, Gary.

Children can ride alongside the pair in their Krabby Patty Wagon. The Patty Wagons attributes include a steering wheel, pushbutton sound effects and a small LCD display incorporated into the dashboard area showing sing-a-long lyrics to the show's theme tune in time to the music.

The SpongeBob ride is now in production, but interest is high and the company recommend placing any orders as soon as possible to receive the ride in time for the Summer Holiday season!

Other rides still available from Kiddy Rides are "Peppa Pig", "Pip Ahoy!", a range of Buses and many more new and refurbished machines.

Northern Leisure will be exhibiting at Autumn Coin-op Show (ACOS) being held at Stamford Bridge, London between October 14-15.

Entertainment One Takes Controlling Stake In "Peppa Pig"; 52 Brand-New Episodes To Be Produced; Ladybird Books Releases "Peppa's Post" Book

Entertainment One (eOne), headquartered in Canada, is increasing its ownership of beloved preschool franchise "Peppa Pig" by entering into an agreement with "Peppa Pig" co-owners Astley Baker Davies (ABD) to purchase a controlling stake in the global brand. As part of the deal, creators, directors and producers Mark Baker, Neville Astley and Phil Davies will produce an additional 52 magical episodes of "Peppa Pig"!

The deal underpins eOne's content ownership strategy. Since 2007, "Peppa Pig" has been co-owned and distributed globally by eOne. With the new episodes of "Peppa Pig" in production, eOne says it will "look to maximise value through the centralised and holistic management of the brand's worldwide exploitation across all platforms".

The price tag for the deal is $212 million (£140 million). The company said it will use a rights issue to raise $293.3 million (£193.6 million) to fund the deal and related expenses.

The planned acquisition will increase its "interest in the related share of earnings from the exploitation of "Peppa Pig" from 50 percent to 85 percent," and Astley Baker Davies will become a subsidiary of the company, meaning its financials will be fully consolidated, Entertainment one said.

Darren Throop, President & Chief Executive Officer, Entertainment One said: ""Peppa Pig" has emerged as a worldwide phenomenon and reflects the success of our 10 year partnership working with the creative genius of Mark, Nev and Phil. Now the number one pre-school property in the UK, Australia, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Brazil, and a leader in major territories around the world, the growth opportunities for Peppa are significant.

"Our family and licensing teams have an unparalleled knowledge of the brand and an impassioned belief in its global potential. As we continue to expand in the US, Asia and throughout our existing markets, we are excited to enter into new markets and take Peppa to new heights."

ABD has produced more than 200 episodes over six series of "Peppa Pig", which have been broadcast in over 180 territories around the world, including Nick Jr. UK & Ireland, Nick Jr. USA and Nick Jr. Australia & New Zealand. It took home BAFTA's in 2005, 2011 and 2012, and has been awarded numerous other accolades.

A spokesperson for ABD said: "In our many years working together, Entertainment One has gone above and beyond as committed and dedicated partners. Peppa is so close to our hearts and she touches the lives of so many families around the world. With eOne's knowledge of Peppa and their extensive distribution network, we see so much more potential for Peppa and our work together."

In additional "Peppa Pig" news, Ladybird Books has released a new "Peppa Pig" title reminiscent of Janet and Allan Ahlberg's popular "The Jolly Postman"!

The new book, titled "Peppa Pig: Peppa's Post", features an array of exclusive letters, postcards, games, fancy dress items and maps.

"Peppa Pig: Peppa's Post" arrived on shelves today, Thursday 1st October 2015.
