Netflix to Share Updates For 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Live-Action Series During Geeked Week 2023

Netflix has announced that it will reveal some updates about the streamer's upcoming live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series during the service's Geeked Week 2023!

Although not stated outright in the trailer, this year's Geeked Week could include news for Star Trek: Prodigy, which Netflix recently acquired from Paramount+.

What to Know for Avatar: The Last Airbender Live-Action Series on Netflix

Avatar: The Last Airbender will be streaming its live-action series with Netflix in 2024. Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer with Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Roseanne Liang, and Michael Goi signed on as executive producers. The Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series stars the likes of Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. The extended supporting cast announced thus far as includes Maria Zhang as Suki, Paul Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, Thalia Tran as Mei, Lim Kay Siu as Monk Gyatso, and Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, and Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue.

Netflix first announced that a new live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was in the works way back in 2018, but unfortunately there were some big changes going on behind the scenes in the time sense. Originally announced with the involvement of original Avatar: The Last Airbender series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, it was soon revealed that the creators left the series due to creative differences.

Nickelodeon Vs. Cartoon Network Rivalry Heats Up In Latin America

The rivalry between Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network is heating up in Latin American thanks to the latter's new trailer.

Cartoon Network Latin America recently unveiled a new multi-generational spot that unites more than three generations through the love of their cartoons.

The commercial begins showing a girl enjoying Cartoon Network on her iPad whilst in a dentist's waiting room, while a older man, aged around 30, fondly remembers the animated series that marked his childhood, such as Courage the Cowardly Dog and The Powerpuff Girls. This ignites a debate with the other patients in the waiting room, in which they reminisce about the shows they love.

The highlight of the ad is when each generation shares their favorite animated series, which characters from beloved shows such as Dexter's Laboratory, The FlintstonesAdventure Time, Steven UniverseWacky Races and The Jetsons also making appearances in the advertisement.

Towards the end, the 30-ish-year-old man stands up to offer an emotional message: "This isn't a competition. In the end, don't you think that... just maybe, each version of Cartoon Network is the best in its own way?"

However, it all comes to ahead at the end, when a man says that he prefers Nickelodeon over Cartoon Network. In response, one of the Cartoon Network's most iconic characters, Bugs Bunny, tells him: "then I have some bad news for you, old man," whilst wielding a giant ACME dentist's drill. This playful interaction between characters from both networks adds a touch of humor to the eternal rivalry between the channels.

Paramount UK Eyes Outdoor-Themed Shows for Milkshake!, Girl-Skewing Toons for Nick Jr., Live-Action Slapstick Comedy for Nickelodeon

Paramount UK & Ireland is in the market for shows relating to the outdoors for Channel 5's preschool kids’ block Milkshake!, as well as girl-skewing animation for Nick Jr. that complements the upcoming reboot of Dora the Explorer.

Speaking to C21 Media at MipJunior in Cannes on Saturday, October 14, Paramount UK & Ireland’s General Manager (GM) for kids and family Louise Bucknole noted that content related to the outdoors is especially crucial after all the Covid-related lockdowns.

“We’re looking at content around that subject at the moment because play and the outdoors is very important to kids, particularly after the Covid years,” she said.

Also for Milkshake!, Bucknole said she is still in the market for STEM-based live-action, factual shows and slapstick comedies, echoing comments she made at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield in July. Slapstick comedy, in particular, is a genre where the exec sees a gap at the Channel 5 programming block.

“Anything around play patterns is really interesting to us and we follow the Early Years Foundation on Milkshake! as well. That’s very important. While it’s not curriculum-based, we always have that underlining soft learning and educational focus because we’re a public service broadcaster,” she added.

Meanwhile at Nick Jr., Bucknole wants to find an animated series for girls that could complement Dora!, in addition to live-action comedy in a similar vein to The Thundermans and Henry Danger for Nickelodeon.

“On the Nick side, we’re looking for big character IP, animation particularly, for both preschool and older kids and we look at how we can have brands that expand out as well,” the exec said, citing examples like Transformers, Monster High, The Loud House and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Additionally, Bucknole is interested in book-based properties for both Milkshake! and the Nickelodeon brands, like Milkshake!’s preschool animation Pip & Posy from Magic Light Pictures.

“We also very much try to ensure we have relatable series that reflect how kids see themselves in the world. We have a ‘no diversity, no commission’ policy and that is very, very important for us in making sure we are authentic in the stories we tell and with the families and kids we represent,” she added.

CMC: Paramount UK and Ireland is looking for STEM-themed and slapstick content for its UK broadcaster Channel 5’s Milkshake! kids’ block and “larger-than-life” stories for Nick Jr, according to general manager for kids and family Louise Bucknole.

Speaking at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield on Wednesday, Bucknole said she is looking to fill slots in Milkshake! for 2025 and 2026 in both animation and live-action.

“For live-action we’re interested in shows focused around STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths]. We’re in development or production on some animal series and we’ve got something in space and [relating to] the outdoors, so those are areas we have covered.

“But slapstick, physical comedy, play patterns and messy play are some of the themes we’re looking for,” she said, adding that coproductions are attractive since Milkshake!’s budget is “quite moderate.”

For Nick Jr, Bucknole is interested in big IP-based properties and characters that will carry globally, since the channel operates around the world.

“It’s understanding kids and it’s [showing] the best of kids and their world, but better. Shows with larger-than-life characters, like Paddington, Paw Patrol and Baby Shark, are the kind of shows that really work on the platform,” she said.

“Everything must always be from a kid’s point of view: funny, broad, relatable content that is energetic. Franchises are absolutely key to our global strategy,” Bucknole added.

Bucknole’s also announced a slate of kids’ commissions and acquisitions for Milkshake! at CMC.

Stan & Gran (52×11’), from producers Jellyfish Originals and Jolly Wise, is a CG animated series following the mystery-busting adventures of Stan Breakwater, a curious and excitable young nature lover, and his fun-loving, dynamic Gran.

Animal Care Club (25×11’), from eOne Unscripted, is a new factual series that sees pairs of young carers team up with experts at a variety of locations around the UK. One episode might see the pairs team up with a vet, in others they help a zookeeper care for amazing exotic animals, or they might help at an animal sanctuary or farm.

Finally, Chip & Potato (40×11’), from WildBrain Studios and Darrall Macqueen, is a series focusing on a curious pug puppy who carries a tiny mouse with her to help navigate life at kindergarten.

Frasier begins a new career at the university, determined to be taken seriously as an academic—but finds that a nearly twenty year stint as a daytime talk show host is not easy to escape.

Starring Kelsey Grammer, who reprises his EmmyⓇ Award-winning role as Frasier Crane, the 10-episode first season will premiere in the U.S. and Canada on Thursday, October 12, with two episodes and on Friday, October 13, in all other international markets where Paramount+ is available. New episodes will then drop weekly on Thursdays, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, and on Fridays, internationally. In addition, the CBS Television Network will broadcast a special airing of the first two episodes back to back on Tuesday, October 17, beginning at 9:15 p.m. ET/PT (following a super-sized original episode of Big Brother).

FRASIER was filmed in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. The new series follows Frasier Crane (Grammer) in the next chapter of his life as he returns to Boston with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building!

In addition to Grammer, the new series stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.

FRASIER comes from writers Chris Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Joe Cristalli (Life in Pieces), who executive produce with Kelsey Grammer, Tom Russo and Jordan McMahon. The series is produced by CBS Studios, in association with Grammer’s Grammnet NH Productions. The first two episodes of the new series are directed by legendary director and television creator James Burrows, who is best known for his work as co-creator, executive producer and director of the critically acclaimed series Cheers, as well as the original series Frasier, Will & Grace and Dear John. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of the Paramount+ markets.

This fall marks 30 years since the original Frasier first premiered on television, which still holds the record for most Emmy wins for a comedy series with 37 wins and 107 nominations. The original series is available to stream on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

Nickelodeon Israel Starts To Air Message During Programming to Comfort Children Affected By Israel-Gaza Unrest

With on-going unrest in Israel and Gaza, Nickelodeon Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵל) has started to air a safety message for viewers in a lower-third on-air graphic during programming. The message, translated from Hebrew, says: "Beloved children. Stay with the family and obey the directives of the Home Front Command. We will get through this strong together. We are here with you and for you." TeenNick Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵל) also recently brought back its Together With Nick (ביחד עם ניק) feature, featuring stars from Nickelodeon and TeenNick shows, including Yuval Semo (יובל סמו) from Daddy Nanny (אבא מטפלת), who delivered a comforting message to viewers affected by war.
