Streaming On: Streaming Strategy with Naveen Chopra | Paramount


In Paramount's Streaming On series, host Dometi Pongo speaks to the leaders in streaming across Paramount. In this episode, Pongo interviews Paramount CFO Naveen Chopra about the company's investment in streaming content, our most recent earnings reporting, and how Paramount is poised for international streaming success.


Paramount Chair Shari Redstone to Shareholders: “We Definitely Have the Scale” to Compete

She and CEO Bob Bakish also laud 'Top Gun: Maverick' during the company's annual shareholder meeting, with Bakish saying about box office trends that "there is light at the end of the tunnel."

Paramount Global has “what it takes to succeed,” including enough scale, and is pursuing a “disciplined approach to content creation,” non-executive chair Shari Redstone said at the entertainment conglomerate’s annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday.

“The past year has been one of growth and success,” she said at the event, which was webcast and was the first such gathering since the company’s name change in February. Among other things, the company managed to “maximize the power of our content, accelerate our momentum in streaming and deliver quarter after quarter of strong results.”

The company’s name change came in recognition of the “great progress” made since the Viacom-CBS merger and also symbolizes that the firm was “embracing our exciting future,” Redstone said. She also touted the “disciplined approach to content creation” and diversified revenue streams of Paramount, across free and pay models.

On the streaming front, the company chair highlighted Paramount+ as “one of the fastest-growing streaming services in the United States” with one of the largest content libraries. And she emphasized that streaming revenue growth last year came in “well ahead of our projections.”

The company’s film studio also drew praise from Redstone. Paramount Pictures “has delivered five no. 1 movies to-date this year,” the chair highlighted, mentioning the likes of Top Gun: Maverick.

Redstone concluded her remarks by saying that the company has “what it takes to succeed, and we are just getting started.”

At last year’s meeting, Redstone had touted the firm, then known as ViacomCBS, as “one of the kings of content” and argued that since the late 2019 merger that formed the company “we have made great strides toward transforming” the combined business.

Redstone got a question about the company’s scale as some on Wall Street have continued to wonder if it could seek another big deal down the line. “We have a world-class portfolio of assets, and we are executing on a strategy that is driving growth and differentiates us from our competitors,” she said. “As I often say, scale is not about market cap or not even about how much money you spend on content. It is about having enough money to spend on the content that resonates with our audiences and that keeps them wanting more.”

Her conclusion: “We definitely have the scale that we need to compete.” She later repeated: “We 100 percent believe that we have the scale … to succeed and to win.”

The chair also touted the company’s “unparalleled” library with content across platforms, genres and demographics, adding that “we see plenty of upside going forward.”

Meanwhile, the entertainment powerhouse’s president and CEO Bob Bakish answered questions about business trends during the Wednesday gathering. Asked about the competitive streaming space and how Paramount is positioning itself in it, Bakish said “it is not a winner-take-all” market, arguing the firm has a “superior financial outlook” compared with pure-play streamers. In that content, he highlighted that his team has long pursued a mix of free, advertising VOD and subscription VOD streaming models, something traditional streamers are also starting to embrace, a likely reference to Netflix planning to launch an ad tier. Paramount’s strategy ensures it can broaden its addressable market and has seen “real traction,” the CEO said.

Bakish also quoted Redstone’s late father Sumner who used to say “content is king,” saying “it’s really true.” And he argued that Top Gun: Maverick is among the key releases whose success “highlights the power of the Paramount content engine.”

The final question was when the box office could return to its levels seen before the coronavirus pandemic. “I think there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Bakish said. “And that’s going to work out well for us and frankly the industry, because films matter, pure and simple, and we got great ones.” He also touted the Memorial Day record set by Top Gun: Maverick. “It proved that if you made great, great content, they will come,” he said. “Everybody showed up,” which makes the film a “great milestone.”

Paramount had in early May reported that it added 6.3 million global streaming subscribers in the first quarter to top the 62 million mark as of the end of March, up from more than 56 million as of the end of 2021.

Paramount CFO Naveen Chopra recently lauded Warren Buffett’s investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway for buying a stake worth about $2.6 billion in the company, which owns Paramount Pictures, CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Comedy Central and streaming services Paramount+ and Pluto TV, among other assets. Buffett’s stake makes the legendary billionaire one of the largest outside investors in the company. “We’ve always believed there’s a lot of upside, so it’s exciting to see someone with Berkshire’s track record see a lot of that same opportunity,” Chopra told an investor conference.

Brian Robbins Talks About Rebooting 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Franchise

Brian Robbins has spoken more about Paramount's plan to reboot the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, including the upcoming animated movie!


Speaking to Variety, the President & Chief Executive Officer, Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon, and Chief Content Officer, Movies and Kids & Family, Paramount+ said: "It’s animated, and it goes back to the roots of the Turtles. Seth and his producing partner Evan Goldberg were brilliant choices because no one can tell stories about being teenagers better than those guys. They’re passionate and super nerdy about the Turtles. It’s going to work for kids, parents, Gen Z-ers and Millennials. We have plans to do multiple animated movies this way, but one day we might go back to a hybrid live-action version of the Turtles."

Robbins also reiterated his plans to focus on franchises: "Going forward, I’m focused on our franchises. We are fortunate in that we have amazing franchises, which we need to lean into. We have adult franchises like Mission: Impossible, A Quiet Place, Transformers and Star Trek. And we have family franchises with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob. You’ve got to have multi-year plans for these franchises. You can’t just make a movie, see how it does and then decide to make another one, because if you do that, it will be years between sequels. Like Sonic, we’re going to take a spinoff character Knuckles and do a miniseries on Paramount+, which will transition us into the third Sonic movie with lots of Easter eggs. That planning is what I’m focused on, as well as filling out the slate with filmmakers that we’re passionate about who want to tell stories that they have passion for. That allows us to greenlight things like the new movie we have from Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the South Park guys, who are working on a movie with Kendrick Lamar that’s so far out, it could break through the zeitgeist."

Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, Robbins also talked about whether they'll be a third Top Gun film: "Let’s see where we are 35 years from now. I don’t want to speculate. This is an incredible run. The sky is the limit for this movie."

Nicktoons Motu & Patlu join UN Earth Champion Afroz Shah for a beach clean-up in Mumbai

As part of the UN in India and Nickelodeon campaign to protect humanity’s #OnlyOneEarth


On World Environment Day, Nicktoons Motu Patlu teamed up with Afroz Shah, UNEP Champion of the Earth for a beach cleanup at Versova Beach as part of its ongoing campaign, #OnlyOneEarth with the United Nations in India.

The programme aims to raise awareness on ways individual action can help protect our planet and its ecosystems. The beach cleaning programme, organised by the Afroz Shah Foundation, saw volunteers across age groups collect waste from Versova beach to prevent litter from reaching our oceans and harming marine animals. The volunteer effort gave young people and children a chance to demonstrate their love and care for the planet Earth, its environment and biodiversity, including oceans and its life.


Commenting on the participation from Motu & Patlu, Afroz Shah said, ““It is important to remember that there is no Planet B, and therefore we must protect the one we have for the future. It’s time we look at our actions and adopt sustainable practices to reduce our carbon footprint. I truly believe children are critical agents of change and can make a difference through everyday actions. And encouragement from their favourite Nicktoons will only inspire them to be the change leaders they are!”

Nickelodeon has consistently strived to instill positive behavioral change amongst children and in shaping their values by leveraging the influence of Nicktoons among kids. This initiative also aims to sensitise children about littering in public spaces, including beaches, and the impact of plastic usage on environment and marine life.


Afroz Shah, the founder of the Afroz Shah Foundation, is a UNEP Champion of the Earth and a young change-maker reclaiming beaches, oceans, rivers, and mangroves from trash and apathy.

Tonies Launches Raft of New Content for Summer; New Launches Inside George From 'Peppa Pig' and Pride Tales

New launches include pre-school favourites Peppa Pig and PJ Masks, a special Pride Tales for Pride Month and also some new storage solutions.


Children’s audio system Tonies has unveiled a new line-up for the summer including Peppa Pig’s George, Tee and Mo, Swan Lake, Pinocchio and Monty & Co, as well as superheroes Owlette, Catboy and Gekko as the PJ Masks.

Launching in June and July, they will be joined by Pride Tales, a Tonie dedicated to celebrating and reinforcing positive Pride messages for listeners and their families, which launches for Pride Month in June.

With the new Peppa Pig Tonie, George joins his sister Peppa on the Toniebox with 10 stories narrated by John Sparkes, while pre-schoolers will also be entertained by three new PJ Masks Tonies packed with superhero stories and songs from the TV series.

Introducing children to Tchaikovsky’s magical ballet, the new Swan Lake Tonie tells the story of Prince Siegfried and Odette.

The new Tee and Mo Tonie contains three stories and six songs that explore scenarios familiar to children and their caregivers everywhere, while inspiring imaginative play at home.


The relaunched Favourite Classics Pinocchio Tonie offers a world of adventure with four timeless stories of Pinocchio’s quest to become a ‘real boy’, and kids can also meet The Railway Children as their lives change forever following the disappearance of their father. Kids can also enjoy the charming tale of Badger, Ratty, Mole and Toad in The Wind in the Willows and follow the adventures of Black Beauty, a horse from 19th century England.

Also new is Monty & Co, a mini musical comedy drama about a blended family of puppets that spend their days repairing, reinventing and upcycling everything from broken clocks to musical instruments.

The Pride Tales Tonie is narrated by Johannes Radebe and takes the shape of the famous Pride Rainbow. Tonies has partnered with Mermaids, a charity which has been supporting transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people and their families since 1995. The company will be donating 100% of the profits from sales of the Pride Tales Tonie to Mermaids.

Liz Peters, head of Portfolio UK & IR at Tonies, said: “We’re thrilled to be releasing such a wide-range of new content for all ages this summer. From beloved classics to popular kids’ TV shows, there’s something to entertain every little listener during the long holidays.”

Bangalore, Karnataka, India -- Spin Master Entertainment has announced that PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, the second film in the animated PAW Patrol franchise, is greenlit to hit the cinemas in October 2023. This will be Spin Master’s second collaboration with Mikros Animation to deliver a cinematic all-CG animation feature film that follows Ryder and the pups’ travels to Adventure City.

When a magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, it gives the PAW Patrol pups superpowers, transforming them into The MIGHTY PUPS! For Skye, the smallest member of the team, her new powers are a dream come true. But things take a turn for the worse when the pups' archrival Humdinger breaks out of jail and teams up with Victoria Vance, a meteor-obsessed mad scientist, to steal the superpowers and turn themselves into supervillains. With the fate of Adventure City hanging in the balance, the Mighty Pups have to stop the supervillains before it's too late, and Skye will need to learn that even the smallest pup can make the biggest difference.

What A Feeling! Spread Group Signs Deal with Paramount Consumer Products in Europe

Spread Group has signed a deal with Paramount Consumer Products to produce print-on-demand products for the European market for five iconic properties: SpongeBob SquarePants, Garfield, Flashdance, Top Gun, and Star Trek.


Sustainability is at the heart of the partnership. The Spread Group’s print-on-demand offering means an item is only printed after it has been ordered. This limits waste because there’s no over-stocking and leftover sizes.

The first designs will include Garfield LASAGNA lunchboxes, Saturday Night Fever posters, I Feel the Need for Speed Top Gun t-shirts, and Flashdance logo and What a Feeling! hoodies. The designs will be a mixture of classic images and newly created designs produced by Spread Group.

Customisation is also made easy with print-on-demand. Fans have the freedom to add a design to a product in a size, colour, and style of their choice. When fans are involved in the creation of an item it creates a greater affinity with the brand.

Sven Burscher, Spread Group’s Head of Licensing, says: “This partnership means Spread Group can offer a huge variety of themes to a wide audience. The Paramount Global brands cover iconic movies and cartoons for a large demographic. There’s a coming-of-age moment for everyone!

“Our print-on-demand offering means the brands and their fans can customise their creations to suit them, whilst retaining brand integrity. It also limits waste, which is better for the planet.”

Fans will be able to add images and quotes to t-shirts, hoodies, caps, bags, aprons, mugs, water bottles, lunchboxes, pillowcases, posters, and stickers, depending on the brand. Designs will also be localised – for example, Garfield quotes in German, French and English.

The license covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the UK.

Nickelodeon Studios is set to begin production on a brand-new original live-action series based on the Emmy Award-winning animated show, The Loud House, for Paramount+. The as-yet-untitled series follows the success of the live-action movie, A Loud House Christmas, which became TV’s top kids’ entertainment telecast of 2021 when it premiered on Nickelodeon in November. The 10-episode series will begin filming in June in Albuquerque, N.M., with a premiere slated for later this year on the streaming service.

The live-action The Loud House series will follow Lincoln Loud, an 11 year-old boy with 10 sisters, as he navigates everyday life while living with such a large family. Known as the “Man with a Plan,” Lincoln enlists the help of his best friend Clyde McBride to tackle the obstacles and mayhem that they encounter during their daily adventures.

The Loud House live-action series will see the real-life versions of the beloved Loud family from A Loud House Christmas return to reprise their roles: Wolfgang Schaeffer, as Lincoln Loud; Jahzir Bruno, as Clyde McBride; Brian Stepanek, as Lynn Loud Sr.; Sophia Woodward, as Luna Loud; Catherine Ashmore Bradley, as Luan Loud; Aubin Bradley, as Lucy Loud; Ella Allan, as Lola Loud; Mia Allan, as Lana Loud; and Lexi Janicek, as Lisa Loud. Rounding out the cast is Jolie Jenkins as Rita Loud, Eva Carlton as Leni Loud and Annaka Fourneret as Lynn Loud.

When A Loud House Christmas premiered on Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, it became the top kids’ entertainment telecast with kids 6-11 across all TV for the year, drawing 3.1 million total viewers over the holiday weekend. A Loud House Christmas is currently streaming here on Paramount+. The live-action The Loud House series for Paramount+ is executive produced by Tim Hobert (The Middle, Scrubs, Community), Jonathan Judge (A Loud House Christmas, Warped!, All That) and Michael Rubiner (The Loud House). Hobert also serves as showrunner and the pilot is directed by Judge. Production of the series for Nickelodeon Studios is overseen by Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Jessica Brown serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

The Loud House animated series debuted on Nickelodeon in May 2016 and centers on 11-year-old Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters as he gives an inside look at what it takes to survive the chaos of a huge family. Greenlit for a seventh season, it is one of the longest-running animated series on Nickelodeon with 176 episodes. The property has also been translated into: a comic book series, which continues to roll out new stories; chapter books; a digital album; and a podcast, Listen Out Loud. The series is executive produced by Michael Rubiner. Kyle Marshall serves as co-executive producer and Ashley Kliment-Baker is art director.
