Nickelodeon Taps Dr. Anthony S. Fauci to Answer Kids' Questions About COVID-19 in Brand-New Nick News Breaks, Airing Saturday, April 3

NICKELODEON TAPS DR. ANTHONY S. FAUCI, DIRECTOR OF NIAID, TO ANSWER KIDS’ QUESTIONS ABOUT COVID-19 IN BRAND-NEW NICK NEWS BREAKS, AIRING SATURDAY, APRIL 3

Share it: @Nickelodeon #NickNews

Nickelodeon’s Nick News will feature Director of NIAID and the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases Dr. Anthony S. Fauci taking real questions from real kids in a series of four Nick News Breaks, beginning Saturday, April 3, and airing throughout the weekend on Nick, TeenNick, Nicktoons and on Nickelodeon social media platforms. Nick News Breaks is an ongoing series of news updates covering the big topics and news of the day that are most important to kids.

In the Nick News Breaks, Dr. Fauci candidly answers the following questions from kids across the country:

  • I already wear one mask and now I hear we need to wear two masks.  Do I really need to wear two masks? – Kaleb, age 12
  • I stay with my grandma part time.  Does that mean I need to get the vaccine? She gives the best hugs – does that mean I can’t hug her? – Jade, age 10
  • My parents told me that kids my age are now being tested for the vaccination. Is that true? – Joey, age 9
  • When will I be allowed to have playdates again? – Ella, age 6
  • Why does the information about COVID-19 keep changing on the news? – Jesai, age 13
  • I didn’t have a birthday party last year. Will I miss it again this year? – Natalie, age 11

Nick News Breaks debuted on Nickelodeon earlier this year, covering topics ranging from the Capitol Insurrection to Trump Impeachment, Peaceful Transition of Power, to COVID-19 Vaccines and NASA Landing on Mars.

The award-winning Nick News series made its return last June with a special hour-long presentation Kids, Race and Unity: A Nick News Special, hosted by global superstar Alicia Keys, and was followed by Nick News: Kids Pick the President, a special hosted by Nickelodeon alum Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP) in October. Specials will continue to air throughout the year. Nick News is executive produced by Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice President of News Programming.

In the four videos, six children pose questions to the infectious diseases expert about how COVID-19 affects their lives. Ella, 6, asks Fauci when she will be able to have play dates again.

“You know Ella I would hope that by the time we get to the late spring and early summer you could start having play dates,” he said. “So hang on a little bit longer. We’re going in the right direction.”

Ten-year-old Jade questioned Fauci on whether she needed the vaccine if she lives with her grandmother part-time and whether she can hug her.

“Well if your grandmother is vaccinated, even though you're not vaccinated, you don’t have to wear a mask when you’re with her, and you can go back and get one of her really big hugs,” Fauci responded.

Natalie, 11, posed a question to Fauci asking whether she will be able to have a birthday party this year.

“Natalie, it depends on when your birthday is,” he answered. “I didn’t have my birthday this year. Usually I have all of my daughters and my family come in and have a big meal together, and we didn’t do that this year.”

“So I’m hoping that next year I’ll be able to have it,” he continued. “So I’m wishing the same thing for you that when you have your 12th birthday, Natalie, that you’re going to be able to have a party. So let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

In another video, Jesai, 13, asked, “Why does the information about COVID-19 keep changing on the news?”

“That’s a good question,” Fauci answered. “Information changes only when you get new factual data and evidence. And since we’re still continuing to learn more and more every week, every month, sometimes recommendations that you wanna make based on data — they can change only when the data and the evidence change.”

'Stray Dog' - A Mysterious Nickelodeon Show | Nickelodeon Lost Content

Looking through Nickelodeon's "Thankyou Nickelodeon" 1998/99 sales tape, I spotted what seems to be a pilot for Nickelodeon show that either didn't make to series, or became an entirely different series.

Stray Dog

Nickelodeon's 1998/99 sales tape features a segment for a show titled Stray Dog. Although the sequence is only a few seconds long, judging from the footage, it would of featured a young girl (either in her pre-teens or early-teens) and a heroic dog. From the footage, the dog would of saved people in dangerous situations, such as grizzly bear attacks and bike accidents. The surroundings of which the show was set are also snow covered.

Stray Dog

Although Stray Dog never made it to air, it could have ended up being a different Nickelodeon show entirely.

In October 1999, Nickelodeon premiered 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, a comedy created for the network by Steven H. Berman, Mitchel Katlin, and Nat Bernstein.

100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd

In 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, Eddie McDowd (Jason Dohring) is considered to be a schoolyard bully by his peers. He considers himself very attractive and powerful and so he bullies others without mercy. One day, while bullying a kid after school, he is caught by a mysterious man. He tells McDowd that due to his bullying he will be punished for his wrongdoings by living life as a dog, and that in order to be restored as a human he has to do 100 good deeds for others.

Besides The Drifter, the only one who can hear him talk (voiced by Seth Green in Season 1, Jason Hervey in Season 2–3) is Justin Taylor (Brandon Gilberstadt), who happens the last kid he bullied. At first the two are firmly against the idea, but McDowd realizes that he must work alongside Justin and his family to finish his good deeds. Every time Eddie performs a good deed the Drifter appears with a creatively presented number stating the remaining deeds he has left. Occasionally when Eddie misbehaves the Drifter takes away one of his deeds.

The series ran for 40 episodes across three seasons until April 21, 2002, meaning that the story has no ending as the series was cancelled before a final resolution could be made.

Whilst both Stray Dog and 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd seem to be different series, they also share a lot of similarities. Both feature stray dogs (Eddie - in dog form - and Justin first meet each other at their local dog shelter). The only real differences is the gender of the dog's friend - a girl in Stray Dog and a boy in Eddie McDowd - and the breed of the dog (whilst I'm not entirely sure what breed the dog in Stray Dog is, Eddie is a Australian Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix).

Whilst there's not much information about Stray Dog, it could be that Stray Dog was the working title of 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, and the footage featured in the sizzle tape was from an early pilot, before producers changed certain aspects of it.

And whilst we don't know what actually became of Stray Dog, it's a neat bit of Nickelodeon Lost Content. Check out more screenshots from Stray Dog below!

'SpongeBob SquarePants' Fans Petition to Have Nickelodeon Reinstate Controversial Episode 'Mid-Life Crustacean'

SpongeBob SquarePants fans are calling on Nickelodeon to "bring back" a Season 3 episode after it was removed over its controversial and inappropriate storyline. In late March, fans of the beloved animated series noticed that Season 3's "Mid-Life Crustacean" was no longer available for viewing, having been pulled off-air as well as from streaming services, such as Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video. The episode featured three of the show's male characters – Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick – going on a "Panty Raid."

In the wake of the episode's removal, one diehard fan of the long-running series, obviously upset over the "fan-favorite" episode being pulled, created a Change.org petition calling on the network to "Bring Back 'Mid-Life Crustacean'!" The petition's creator noted that while "Mid-Life Crustacean" was removed, its sister episode, "The Great Snail Race," "still remains." The petitioner argued that "this has upset a lot of fans."

As the writer noted, the controversial episode featured Mr. Krabs experiencing a mid-life crisis. In an effort to pull him out of it, SpongeBob and Patrick Star embark with him on a "night of debauchery," which includes picking up litter, sitting in a kiddie pool, and playing Dungeons & Dragons. The night culminates with them going on a "Panty Raid," which the petitioner noted just so happens to be at "the home of Krabs' mother, who gives him an earful." While it is largely believed the episode was pulled due to this raid, with the petitioner suggesting Nickelodeon "simply thought this moment of the episode was simply inappropriate for kids," the removal has upset many.

According to the petition, "Nickelodeon already knows that a large portion of the fanbase is composed of nostalgic adults," and as such, a more appropriate measure, the petition suggests, could have been bumping "up the rating on this episode or include a warning or something else, because if media is to be removed from streaming due to its content, it should be for reasons such as racial insensitivity or anything else of the like that actually proves harmful to society." The petitioner notes that other controversial episodes, including "Are You Happy Now?," which "features a handful of grim SUICIDE JOKES," are still available for viewing. Calling Nickelodeon "hypocrites," the petitioner wrote, "if this petition fails, this episode could be removed from broadcast circulation, and we may never be able to legally view or stream these episodes again except on home video, which is barely used anymore. If we succeed, a fan-favorite episode will be restored, and the fanbase shall rejoice." The petition has since garnered 83 signatures with a current goal of 100.

According to David Bittler, a Nickelodeon press executive who spoke to The New York Times, "Mid-Life Crustacean," which originally aired in 2002, was removed from rotation on the network in 2018 "following a standards review in which we determined some story elements were not kid-appropriate." A second episode, the yet-to-air "Kwarantined Crab" from the show's currently airing 12th season, has also been pulled. The episode features a virus storyline, with Nickelodeon stating they "decided to not air it due to sensitivities surrounding the global, real-world pandemic."

At the time of writing, "Mid-Life" is currently unavailable to purchase digitally on Amazon. However, Amazon Prime in the USA currently has the episodes unchanged and available to stream for all subscribers, and "Mid-Life Crustacean" is available as a "Season Only" purchase on iTunes in the SpongeBob collection "From the Beginning, Part 2," which is being sold for $45.99 in the U.S.

Whilst on the whole online petitions don't work, a petition by SpongeBob fans for the NFL to include the iconic SpongeBob song "Sweet Victory" in the 2019 Super Bowl Half-Time Show in honor of the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who died the previous November did kind of work.

Nickelodeon also once went back to re-edit a scene from a SpongeBob episode. The original airing of “SpongeBob in Randomland” in late 2019 included a "red mist" scene referencing the infamous Creepypasta story “Squidward’s Suicide.” This was later edited and replaced with a sequence of Squidward as a baby octopus with a full diaper.

Will you be missing the Panty Raid?

'The Barbarian and the Troll' Turns an Ally's Sacrifice Into a Win in New Sneak Peek

An new preview of The Barbarian and the Troll sees the questing party sacrifice one of their own as collateral before its Nickelodeon premiere.

The latest new clip for Nickelodeon's The Barbarian and the Troll sees the questing party sacrifice one of their own to gain entry into a castle. However, this sacrifice turns out to be a win overall.

The new clip, courtesy of CBR, picks up Stacy the Owl talking with the large knight guarding the castle. Stacy offers some collateral as a sign of good faith that they won't cause trouble if allowed entry. To his surprise, Evan is the one offered up as collateral. "It's just the best, most important part of the quest," Brendar tells Evan. After talking it up, Evan is excited to be collateral, meaning he has to stay behind with the knight while his friends leave without him.

"Hey, you don't have to be nervous around me just cause I'm all super-important because I'm collateral. I'm just like you... made of fur and hair and meat," Evan tells the knight. "I'm assuming you're made of that. It's kinda hard to see past that grill of yours." The knight tells Evan that he's exhausting, which leads Evan to play him a song to put the knight to sleep.

Of course, the knight is skeptical but eventually passes out asleep once Evan finishes his tune.

In the premiere of The Barbarian and the Troll, Evan the troll decides to burn his bridge and venture out into the world of Gothmoria for the first time to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a singer. He soon meets Brendar, who had been expelled from the Royal Order of Warrior Princesses and is now known as a “feared and revered” barbarian. After Evan convinces Brendar to bring him on her quest to vanquish the evil demon, they cross treacherous terrain to confront bizarre and magical creatures and encounter an eclectic puppet cast of wacky characters.
