New Square Enix Studio Working on 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Mobile Game

Square Enix has announced plans for a brand new mobile game inspired by Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender!

The new Avatar game is being developed by Square Enix London Mobile, Square Enix's new London-based studio with a focus on developing high-quality, free-to-play mobile games, and Navigator Games, another mobile games studio.

“It has been an incredible privilege to partner with Square Enix London Mobile on the creation of a game with such an iconic IP,” said Will Moore, CEO at Navigator Games. “The Avatar: The Last Airbender universe has so many layers and complex storylines to explore and we look forward to fully unveiling it and sharing it with all the incredibly passionate and loyal Avatar fans in the future.”

We don't yet know what the gameplay will look like for the Avatar game. However, Navigator Games' last project, Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, was a turn-based fantasy RPG.

The mobile game market is still incredibly strong. In 2019, Apple made more money on games than Xbox, Sony, Nintendo, and Activision combined. The new Avatar game will join previously released Nickelodeon mobile games, including SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off, Loud House: Outta Control, and SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit.

Below is Square Enix's official press release announcing the news:

SQUARE ENIX ANNOUNCES LONDON MOBILE STUDIO

Studio’s Current Roster Includes Mobile Game Based on
Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tomb Raider Reloaded, New Action Adventure Coming in Early 2022

LONDON, UK (October 20, 2021) – Today SQUARE ENIX LTD. announced its latest venture, Square Enix London Mobile, a studio driven by its mission of putting people first while publishing high-quality, free-to-play mobile games. The studio currently has two titles in development based on world-renowned entertainment properties, Tomb Raider and Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, and is actively recruiting marketing and production talent to bring these titles and future to-be-announced mobile games to players across the globe.

“At Square Enix London Mobile, our goal is to move the world through play and in order to do this, we need to grow our team with even more unique voices, varieties of perspectives and creative energy,” said Ed Perkins, Studio Head at Square Enix London Mobile “We have great games in development, access to Square Enix-owned IP and relationships with the world’s top entertainment companies, but our people will be the competitive advantage that fuels our success now and in the future.”

As the group seeks to add new internal talent, the as-yet-untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender mobile game is in development with Vancouver-based studio Navigator Games.

Square Enix London Mobile is also at work on the previously announced Tomb Raider Reloaded, a nostalgic, action-arcade style adventure designed specifically for mobile. Developed in partnership with Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider Reloaded will feature classic elements from the original Tomb Raider trilogy, as players step into the shoes of the franchise’s iconic hero, Lara Croft, to solve puzzles, escape treacherous traps and collect coveted relics from secret tombs across the globe. Tomb Raider Reloaded will launch on the Apple App Store and Google Play in 2022.

'Star Trek: Prodigy' to 'Embody the Franchise’s Humanistic Philosophy and Inclusiveness'; Comedy to 'Come From Within the Characters'

Animator Sung Shin, who has just been named in Variety's 10 Animators to Watch in 2021 list, recently talked about Nickelodeon's upcoming CG-animated Star Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy, in which he's currently working on!

Shin brings to Nickelodeon’s Star Trek: Prodigy a love for telling a story filled with adventure and characters that embody the franchise’s “humanistic” philosophy and inclusiveness. But, there’s also humor in the stories as well. “It’s really fun,” Shin says, “the comedy is not forced and it comes from within the characters.”

Does Shin worry about leading a new iteration of such a beloved franchise with devoted fans? The team behind the show is confident that the characters and stories capture the spirit of Star Trek — “we have amazing writers” he says, and credits exec producer Ben Hibon with his visionary leadership.

Sung Shin

Shin has a history of working on Nickelodeon series that bring together drama and comedy, previously working on Avatar: The Last Airbender spin-off The Legend of Korra at Studio Mir in South Korea.

Update (10/21) - In her opening remarks for Variety‘s 10 Animators to Watch event presented by Nickelodeon, Ramsey Naito, the president of animation at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, spoke about the theme of unity that is both prominent and pressing in the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

“This is an artistic and visually inspiring project that represents the perfect marriage of vision, imagination and storytelling,” Naito said. “Behind the action and adventure and the great stories is a message of unity that people from different backgrounds — and different planets, in this case — can come together and work together to be successful. That is what Star Trek is all about.”

Star Trek: Prodigy launches on Paramount+ October 28, followed by a run on Nickelodeon. To find out more about the show, click here!

Foxtel Group and ViacomCBS announce major content distribution and apps deal

Foxtel Group and ViacomCBS announce major content distribution and apps deal

Agreements cover an expansive entertainment portfolio including Paramount Pictures movies, drama series, channels and apps.

New deal to see Paramount+ and 10 Play apps on Foxtel set tops in 2022 bringing together more world-class streaming entertainment in one place.

Australia - The Foxtel Group today announced a series of multi-year agreements with ViacomCBS to provide blockbuster and catalogue Paramount Pictures movies, a large range of hit TV series, the Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and MTV channels, along with integration of the Paramount+ and 10 Play apps onto Foxtel set top boxes in 2022 for Australia.

With the inclusion of app integration, the Foxtel Group and ViacomCBS relationship is now evolving to deliver more content to subscribers than ever before.

The agreements cover thousands of hours of world-class entertainment including movies such as the highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 starring Tom Cruise coming in 2022, along with blockbuster franchises such as Transformers, Shrek, Madagascar and Star Trek. The agreements also deliver hugely popular TV dramas including the pay TV premiere of Blue Bloods, BULL, FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, NCIS and the classic hit series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

This deal ensures that Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. content will continue to be available to Foxtel and BINGE subscribers, including much-loved kids’ series such as PAW Patrol. The ever-popular MTV channel will also remain available to Foxtel and BINGE subscribers, including hit shows like Ridiculousness.

These agreements with ViacomCBS also accelerate Foxtel’s streaming aggregation strategy to bring together the best of TV, live and on-demand, all in one place. It will see the recently launched Paramount+ app, and the 10 Play app, integrated into iQ3, iQ4, and the brand new iQ5 set top boxes.

Patrick Delany, Foxtel Group Chief Executive Officer said: “We are pleased to extend our long-term partnership with ViacomCBS, with more of the world’s best entertainment to power Foxtel and BINGE, and more apps for our Foxtel customers to enjoy, all in one place.

“The breadth of these agreements is strategically significant for the Foxtel Group. They highlight our strength as a local partner of choice for leading global studios and confirm there are new ways to partner with international media companies who have direct-to-consumer strategies for the benefit of customers.”

Foxtel Group’s Chief Commercial and Content Officer, Amanda Laing, added: “These deals give our customers more of the amazing entertainment they love, from one of the world’s best producers of media and entertainment content, along with more great local content. We are especially excited to offer our subscribers an amazing library of Paramount Pictures movies, as well as an exciting slate of Paramount’s upcoming blockbusters. Paramount has been delivering audiences the world’s best cinema for more than 100 years, and Foxtel is thrilled to be part of continuing that tradition – especially for highly anticipated releases like Top Gun: Maverick.

“We are also delighted to continue to deliver Nickelodeon kids content to our subscribers – Nick Jr. is consistently amongst our top 10 channels, keeping kids across Australia entertained. Our subscribers will also continue to enjoy MTV’s irreverent music and hugely popular reality programming, with shows like Catfish and The Hills: New Beginnings”.

“We are thrilled to extend our longstanding partnership with Foxtel Group,” said Dan Cohen, President, ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group. “Through their suite of platforms, we can reach viewers no matter how they choose to consume our world-class series and feature films. This partnership is consistent with our strategy to maximize the value of our content by licensing to third parties while still supplying programming to our own platforms.”

“We are pleased to partner with The Foxtel group to make available the Paramount+ app and the 10 Play app on the iQ3, iQ4 and the brand new iQ5 set top boxes”, said Jarrod Villani, Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and Executive Vice President, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand.

Adding to the existing suite of app-based streaming platforms Paramount+ and 10 Play will join Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, ABC iView and SBS On Demand cementing the Foxtel set top boxes as the ‘all in one place’ destination for the world’s best streaming content.

Kate Mulgrew Discusses How Hologram Janeway In '‘Star Trek: Prodigy' Is Different Than Her Human Counterpart

Though most of Paramount+ and Nickelodeon’s upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy is about exploring new areas of the Star Trek universe — new characters, a new ship, and a setting in the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant — there is one aspect that will be very familiar to longtime fans. Sort of.

That aspect is Hologram Janeway, a holographic guidance and teaching system installed on the USS Protostar, based on Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway. And of course, you can’t have Janeway without the iconic actor who portrayed her: Kate Mulgrew.

“She’s very similar to non-hologram Janeway,” Mulgrew told Decider during a recent press day for the series. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have accepted the offer. I want to endow Hologram Janeway with all of the attributes of the real Captain Janeway. With all of her humor and her warmth, her depth, her intelligence, her love of space, her courage, all of it.”

In the series, a group of six alien teens discover the Protostar, and commandeer it to explore the galaxy. Ultimately  they’re making their way towards the Alpha Quadrant, aka the home of the Federation and an area more familiar to viewers of the Star Trek series and movies. Along the way, they’ll be pursued by The Diviner (John Noble), a mysterious alien with equally mysterious motivations. And if you’re expecting that Hologram Janeway is the one who is going to go toe to toe with The Diviner? Don’t.

“The first thing we did we wanted to make sure Hologram Janeway can’t save them, she can only guide them,” Dan Hageman, co-showrunner and co-creator Prodigy said. “I think that’s important, especially for kids to be watching, you don’t want Hologram Janeway always coming to the rescue and saving them, because that’s what the real Janeway would be doing each time.”

So that’s one big difference between Hologram Janeway and regular Janeway. Are there any similarities? “I can tell you, she still likes coffee,” Hageman continued, laughing. “That doesn’t change, that’s in her digital DNA.”

Though Prodigy is the first animated series aimed at kids set in the Star Trek universe, Hologram Janeway is far from the first holographic character we’ve seen. From escapees from the holodeck on Star Trek: The Next Generation, to The Doctor (Robert Picardo) on Star Trek: Voyager, to more recently a bevy of holographic Rioses (Santiago Cabrera) on Star Trek: Picard, it’s part of the fabric of the franchise. But Hologram Janeway is different in that she’s, for now at least, more about guidance than character growth.

“She is there to guide them, she is there to teach them, and she is there to teach them more than how to get the starship on course,” Mulgrew continued. “She’s there to teach them how to be human beings in the best sense of the word… She’s watching and she’s teaching them as only Janeway can, which is with a measure of levity and patience, and also sometimes a sort of ‘c’est la vie.’ If that’s what you’re going to do doll, do it.”

Despite all that non-interference? When asked who would win in a fight, Hologram Janeway, or The Doctor from Voyager, every single member of the cast and crew agreed: Hologram Janeway would take the win.

“The Doctor would try to bore Janeway to sleep with his holo-novels and then she would bring out a plasma rifle, she’d take him out,” Hageman said.

Said Mulgrew without hesitation, laughing: “Hologram Janeway. Thank you very much for asking.”

Star Trek: Prodigy streams Thursdays on Paramount+ beginning October 28. The show will air on Nickelodeon soon after. Click HERE to find out more about the show!

10 ViacomCBS Australia Hosts 2022 Upfront Presentation

Official ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand press releases:

Heard The One About The Mountain Of Entertainment? We Can’t Get Over It!

Paramount+ Unveils Its 2022 Programming Line-Up.

If you thought we’d peaked too soon with our unique stories, iconic stars, exclusive live sport and towering mountain of entertainment, think again. We’re climbing our way to an even bigger and better 2022!

Whether you’re a fan of live sports, premium entertainment or the very best local and international content from CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, SHOWTIME® and the Smithsonian Channel, a mountain of entertainment is ready and waiting for you on Paramount+ in the coming year.

But hang, on. Not so fast! There’s still 2021 to see out – and we’re definitely finishing the year on a high. First up, things are about to get steamy (or is that nerdy?) in Spreadsheet, a raunchy new Australian comedy about newly divorced, mother-of-two Lauren (Katherine Parkinson, The IT Crowd) who is on the hunt for sex with no strings attached. With the help of her best friend, she creates a spreadsheet – a database of potential men to sleep with.

Also in front of your eyeballs before year’s end is Dexter: New Blood, the special event series which will follow the continuing adventures of serial killer Dexter Morgan; the survival epic Yellowjackets, a startling combination of coming-of-age drama and psychological horror story starring Melanie Lynskey, Oscar® and Emmy® nominee Juliette Lewis,  Emmy® nominee Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress; Mayor of Kingstown, which follows the McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry; 1883, which promises to transport Yellowstone fans more than 130 years into the past to learn how the Dutton family got their start in Montana; and Four Hours at the Capitol, a jaw-dropping, immersive documentary about the insurrection at the US Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington DC to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Need your fix of exclusive Aussie content in 2022? You’ve come to the right place. After the extraordinary success of Five Bedrooms season two, it’s no surprise our favourite homeowners – Liz, Harry, Ben, Heather and Ainsley – are back for a third season.

Go behind the closed doors of a therapist’s office and drop in on the secret world of other people’s relationships in Couples Therapy Australia. In emotionally raw, weekly therapy sessions, this critically acclaimed docuseries sees real-life couples lay bare their intimacy issues with a professional therapist. Can clarity, compassion – and sometimes tough love – help reignite passion’s spark?

Backed by an all-Aussie soundtrack and already creating plenty of buzz, the coming-of-age drama 6 Festivals follows three best friends as they bucket-list six music festivals over six months, whilst coming to terms with a shattering cancer diagnosis.

John Ibrahim’s explosive autobiography comes alive in the gritty mini-series Last King of the Cross, the tale of brothers John and Sam, their ascent to power on Sydney’s mean streets, and the impact their expanding empire has on their relationship.

New Australian reality adventure program The Bridge Australia will offer up-for-a-challenge Australians the chance to work together to build a bridge to an island where life-changing prize money awaits. Once the team members have completed their feat of engineering, they’ll be forced to decide which of them most deserves the cash based on their contribution to building The Bridge.

On Paramount+’s upcoming local programming slate, Beverley McGarvey, Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand, said: “Our selection really captures the essence of what makes entertainment in Australia so powerful. There’s depth in the narratives and complexity to the characters; the production values are world class; and our cast and local crews only underline the diverse, talented bunch we are.”

And just when you thought this mountain of entertainment couldn’t grow any higher, look out for some of the world’s biggest stars in new Paramount+ Original and Paramount+ Exclusive titles, including the exclusive streaming premieres of feature films A Quiet Place Part II (Emily Blunt, John Krasinski) and Paw Patrol The Movie (Skye, Rubble, Zuma, Marshall) and binge-worthy dramas The First Lady (Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Aaron Eckhart); Three Women (Shailene Woodley, DeWanda Wise); The Man Who Fell to Earth (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris); Super Pumped (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kyle Chandler); Ripley (Dakota Fanning, Andrew Scott); a feature-length Ray Donovan film (Liev Schreiber); and The Gilded Age (Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon).

And for all Halo gamers out there (80-million and counting, since its release in 2001), hold on to your controllers! The creators of the super popular video game series have ventured into TV. The live-action Halo series will take viewers into the world of the Master Chief, to see an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant.

Other exclusive titles for 2022 include The Panthers, The Offer, The Envoys (Los Enviados), Tokyo Vice and Ghislaine Maxwell: The Making of a Monster.

If it’s unmissable football action you’re craving, then Paramount+ continues to be the G.O.A.T. Catch every exhilarating A-Leagues clash, plus live and comprehensive coverage of Matildas, Socceroos, FFA Cup and the Emirates FA Cup matches – all from the comfort of your lounge room, where you’ll have the best seat in the house!

Unique stories, iconic stars, live sport and a mountain of entertainment: it’s all right here on Paramount+ in 2022.

Come On In. It’s All For You In ’22!

Australia’s favourite shows are back - and Australia’s new favourite shows are just around the corner! From masked singers to MasterChefs… footballers to fugitives… couch critics and comedians to celebrities and survivors… bachelors and bachelorettes to lovers and liars, Network 10 has it all for you in ’22!

Daniel Monaghan, Senior Vice President, Content and Programming, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand said: “Over the past 18 months we’ve grown our viewing share and once again proven ourselves to be leaders in escapist entertainment across all platforms.

“Our linear free-to-air channels boast the youngest audience of any commercial network, with 30% of our viewers under 39. Not only that, but we also have the most female audience – an astonishing 61% – of any commercial network in Australia.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Australian Survivor, MasterChef Australia, The Masked Singer Australia, The Project, Gogglebox Australia and Have You Been Paying Attention? continue to rule the under 50s demographic and dominate the national conversation.

“This year Network 10 has also attracted its biggest ever digital audience, with minutes viewed on 10 Play up 10% year-on-year.

“In 2022, our flagship franchises are returning bigger and better than ever, and they’ll be complemented by premiere series like Hunted Australia, Would I Lie To You? Australia and First Dates Australia.

“We promise to maintain our impressive trajectory with a strong, consistent line-up of premium content for all audiences, across all channels and platforms.”

On January 3, Lady Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown will return to the Aussie jungle for their eighth season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.

Julia said: “The Doctor and I had an absolute ball doing the show in Australia last season and we can’t wait to hack our way back into the so-called jungle in 2022. Everyone is going to love our latest bunch of camp mates!

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is the perfect show for summer. Expect loads of laughs, a few tears, some mind-blowing surprises and the most insane challenges ever seen on Australian TV.”

Following I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! the award-winning Australian Survivor will return for its most revolutionary season ever.

In Australian Survivor: Blood v Water, players will compete in pairs.

Adding a further level of intrigue, each pair is bound by blood: identical twins, married couples, in-laws, siblings and cousins. Survivor is ultimately an individual game… so what happens when you play bound to another player? Is it possible to betray the ones you love?

It’s unquestionably the best food show on the planet – and in 2022 MasterChef Australia makes a triumphant return – with a very tasty twist.

MasterChef Australia: Foodies vs Favourites will see 12 fresh-faced foodies face off against a dozen of the best chefs ever seen in the MasterChef kitchen, including Alvin Quah, Sarah Todd, Michael Weldon and the OG kitchen queen herself, Julie Goodwin. Once again, the action will unfold under the keen eye of judges Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen.

Melissa said: “We are back for another action-packed season of thrills, chills and kitchen spills… we couldn’t be more pumped! Add to that a handful of new MasterChef foodies going head-to-head with beloved characters from the MasterChef universe over the years… and then of course there’s JULIE GOODWIN!

“If ever there was a time to feel connected through food, it’s now: MasterChef Australia is the hit of nostalgia, inspiration and feel-good fun we need as nation and Jock, Andy and I couldn’t be more excited to serve up a generous and heartfelt serving to audiences in 2022.”

Love guru Osher Günsberg will be back at the helm for all the romance, drama, roses and twinkling fairy lights of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette Australia in 2022.

Osher said: “Get set for more love stories, more luxurious dates, and more whispering when we return with The Bachelor and The Bachelorette Australia in 2022. We redefined dating shows with The Bachelorette Australia this year, and it’s set to be even better next season as we head to a major moment for this landmark franchise.

“10 seasons of any show is a major milestone, and as we hit that landmark with The Bachelor Australia, I’m just so excited to be a part of telling Australia’s favourite love story in a new and exciting way.”

Grab your backpack, lace up your runners and don’t forget to pack your passport (can I hear a hallelujah?) because The Amazing Race Australia will be back racing around the world in 2022.

Boasting the biggest local and international stars, TV’s premier mask-based singing show (OK, you guessed it – it’s The Masked Singer Australia) is back for a new series of spectacle and speculation.

Love to feel your heart pound and your adrenaline surge? Then in your household, Hunted Australia is set to be appointment viewing.

This radical social experiment sees ordinary Australians go on the run, attempting to avoid a crack team of expert hunters who are determined to track them down. Viewers will be plunged into the heart of the chase in what promises to be intense, edge-of-the-seat television.

No less nerve-racking – but a lot more heart-warming – will be First Dates Australia. In this show we’ll be helping singles from all over the country find a very special someone – and with a bit of luck, we’ll fan that first spark of romance into a hunk o’ burning love!

With no competition and no eliminations, this enchanting fly-on-the-wall series leaves plenty of space for love to blossom while perfectly capturing the nervous excitement that accompanies every first date.

Calling all human lie detectors! Would I Lie To You? Australia – based on the hilarious hit UK format – is making its way to 10 in 2022!

Host Chrissie Swan will direct two teams – captained by hilarious comedians Chris Taylor and Frank Woodley – as they navigate the far-fetched to the perfectly plausible. Trying to hoodwink each other with hilarious tall and twisted tales, it’s up to viewers to separate the truth from the fiction.

For even more LOLs, Have You Been Paying Attention? is back for its 10th season with quizmaster Tom Gleisner and series regulars Sam Pang and Ed Kavalee.

Tom said: “It has been so much fun hosting another season of HYBPA? and I hope that our show has provided an opportunity for audiences to enjoy watching something other than Chief Health Officers giving daily press conferences. We look forward to returning in 2022.”

The Cheap Seats will continue to whack on Tuesday night’s funny bone with co-hosts Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald blitzing those blink-and-you-miss-it news stories for a generation who’ve forgotten how to read.

Tim said: “We’ve loved bringing you the best bits of the week on The Cheap Seats! We’re already tinkering with the format (think Squid Game) and can’t wait to do it all again next year until Mel’s visa expires.”

There’s good news for animal lovers. We’ll continue our quest to find lonely dogs their fur-ever home when The Dog House Australia returns for a brand new series.

The First Inventors will transport you back in time – between 70,000 and 120,000 years ago – to a community in the midst of developing sophisticated stone tools, art, agriculture, irrigation and much more.

In this fascinating story of knowledge, resilience, and invention, presenter Rob Collins will meet and collaborate with First Nations authorities whose frontline fieldwork offers an exciting new insight into ancient Indigenous innovations and discoveries.

10’s Fab Four – Amanda Keller, Chris Brown, Barry Du Bois and Miguel Maestre – are suiting up for another season of The Living Room. Expect more food, more renovations, more inspiration – pretty much more of everything!

Oh, and don’t forget our favourite friends on the couch! 2022 just wouldn’t be the same without Gogglebox Australia!

Award-winning current affairs show The Project enters its 13th year in 2022 and will continue to provide Australians with news delivered differently six nights a week.

10 News First will bring you the biggest and most comprehensive coverage of local, national and international news stories, while Studio 10 is back weekday mornings with its unpredictable mix of kooky fun and crazy energy.

In 2022, 10 is the home of Australian football and will proudly be broadcasting A-Leagues matches live, as well as FFA Cup games and all the big clashes featuring the Matildas and Socceroos.

And to our trophy cabinet we’re thrilled to have added the Emirates FA Cup – the world’s most prestigious domestic knockout football competition, featuring the biggest English clubs and the world’s greatest players.

After two years without any racing action at the famous Albert Park circuit, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix roars back to life in 2022, while 10 is proud to once again host all the excitement and glamour of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
