New 'Rugrats' Series Will Feature a More Diverse Cast

Paramount+'s revival of Nickelodeon's beloved '90s series Rugrats will feature a more diverse cast, it has been revealed!


Betty DeVille is now a Latina and is part of the Carmichaels’ main group of friends. The news follows actor Natalie Morales, who voices the character in the new series, revealing that the character, mother of twins Phil and Lil, is also now gay in the new series.

Charlotte’s executive and put-upon assistant Jonathan is now a Latinx character who plays a much bigger role in the show. Additionally, Grandpa Lou also has a wider, more diverse group of friends that he interacts with throughout the series.

Another change fans can expect to see in the Rugrats revival is a slightly younger Susie Carmichael, who has been aged down so that she can no longer talk to adults and spoil Angelica’s plots. This gave the writers more freedom with the plot developments and kept Susie part of the core group of babies.

Toronto - Canada's Corus Entertainment today announced its powerful 2021-2022 programming slate for its top-rated specialty children's channels, YTV and Treehouse, which include the launches of new animated series Best & BesterZJ Sparkleton (working title) and The Hamster Show (working title)!

YTV is the place to be for non-stop Fam Fun, delivering another year of The Zone, The Zone Weekend and Big Fun Movies with beloved hosts Spencer, Tyra, Alex and Duhin. Plus, Spencer and Tyra are back for Season 2 of Kid Food Nation: The Show (8×11), where they embark on culinary missions with Canadian kid food nation heroes and answer questions like, “should I eat crickets?” or “are dandelions edible?.”

Nelvana continues to foster its partnerships with the best in kids entertainment, with the recently announced Best & Bester (52×11), a co-production between Nelvana, Eye Present and Gigglebug Entertainment, about two siblings and best friends obsessed with comparing the best things of all time while enjoying the power to transform themselves into anything they want, once a day – if only they can figure out what the best thing to be actually is! The series is also set to air on Nickelodeon channels internationally.

ZJ Sparkleton (Working Title) (26×22) is an original creator-driven 2D-animated series produced by Nelvana in partnership with Nickelodeon that follows quirky 10-year-old vlogger Ruby and her tail-zapping space alien best friend as they film their daily mishaps and adventures around town.

Audiences will discover the magic of birthdays through the fantastical adventures in Super Wish (52×11), produced by Nelvana and Discovery’s joint venture, redknot, and created by Nelvana’s own Vanessa Esteves and Daytime Emmy® Award winning art director, Adrian Thatcher.

Treehouse

A new addition to Treehouse, the #1 overall kids specialty network*, is The Hamster Show (Working Title) (26×22) produced by Nelvana in partnership with Nickelodeon, where a crew of furry friends keep an eye on their owner, “King” Harry, saving him from daily doom, granting his wishes and keeping his life running smoothly. The pet-ventures continue as everyone’s favourite P.U.R.S.T. agents get ready for action in the second season of Agent Binky: Pets of the Universe (52×11), produced by Nelvana and Discovery’s joint venture, redknot, and based on the best-selling books by Ashley Spires, published by Corus Entertainment’s Kids Can Press.

Coming 2022 is the animated feature film Toopy and Binoo (1×80), based on the series of the same name that aired on Treehouse in the early aughts. Following the theatrical release, the movie will have its broadcast premiere on Treehouse.

Co-produced by Scooter Braun’s SB Projects in association with Cyber Group Studios, the short-form series (10 episodes) follows the musical adventures of Jonny and Matty, and features an original song in each episode. New episodes of The BeatBuds, Let’s Jam! will air daily through Friday, June 11, at 9 a.m. (ET/PT), on Nickelodeon as part of a Nick Jr. Beat Bash week-long programming event featuring music-themed episodes of hit series including PAW Patrol, Blue’s Clues & You! and Baby Shark’s Big Show!


The BeatBuds, Let’s Jam! will also air daily June 7-11 at 6 p.m. (ET/PT) on the Nick Jr. channel and be available on the Nick Jr. YouTube channels. The series will begin rolling out on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels internationally in July. In The BeatBuds, Let’s Jam!, rock ‘n’ roll duo and best friends Jonny and Matty, a.k.a. The BeatBuds, are traveling to their big concert, The BeatBASH. As they journey to the show in The Beat Bus, they have awesome fun-filled experiences making new friends and performing their songs with everyone and everything they encounter.

In the series premiere, “Hello BeatBuddies/The Silly Monkey,” Jonny and Matty are on their way to the Beat Bash when they get pulled into space by a friendly alien named Greeny, and must introduce themselves through the song “Hello BeatBuddies.” Then, The BeatBuds’ practice gets a monkey wrench thrown in it when they can’t find their instruments. They discover a Silly Monkey took their gear and are led on a wild monkey chase as they sing “The Silly Monkey.”

The BeatBuds, Let’s Jam! is written by Evan Sinclair (Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, The Aquabats! The BeatBuds, Let’s Jam! is coming to Nickelodeon on June 7th with 10 episodes! The brand new preschool series will follow Jonny and Matty as they travel to The BeatBASH concert. A clip shows them merging adventure and catchy songs all wrapped up in a educationally based animated package.


BSCkids had the chance to watch a short clip of the show and reveal that the animations has a "very colorful style that has that hand drawn look" and that the snippet they saw "was funny and engaging".

Nickelodeon Honors George Floyd and All Those Lost Due to Police Violence By Unveiling Painting by Tyler Gordon

Nickelodeon today (May 25) honored George Floyd’s passing and all those lost to police violence by unveiling a painting by 2020 Kid of the Year honoree, Tyler Gordon.


Tyler is an artist who uses his love of painting to advocate for anti-bullying and social justice issues, as well as helping other kids with speech impediments through his foundation, Tongue Tyed.

Saundra Hall Boards 'Middlemost Post' as Script Coordinator

Nick News Brief: Saundra Hall announced that the writer today (May 25) started her new job as a script coordinator on Nickelodeon's upcoming animated series, Middlemost Post! Hall, whose credits include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Duncanville, announced the news on Twitter:

Announced in June 2020, Middlemost Post (working title) is an all new animated series which combines quirky characters with hilarious adventures and unwavering friendship. The series is slated to premiere in July 2021 on Nickelodeon.


Created and co-executive produced by John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, storyboard director), the 20-episode 2D-animated series follows a former rain cloud, a brawny mailman and their magical pet walrus as they deliver packages to the unusual inhabitants of Mount Middlemost.


Middlemost Post is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, with Dave Johnson serving as co-executive producer and story editor, and Chris Battle (Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, The Mighty B!, Duckman) serving as a character designer. Additional casting news and premiere date will be announced in the coming months.

In Middlemost Post, Parker J. Cloud, an exuberant raincloud, lives and works in the Middlemost Post Office with Angus, a burly, rule-abiding mailman who cherishes his solitude and values efficiency, and Russell, their magical pet walrus whose stomach is so big that it doubles as a storage room. Together they journey through Mount Middlemost and the six territories of Somewhere to deliver the mail, while meeting some exceptionally quirky and peculiar people along the way. But as this loving and unconventional trio grows closer, they remain blissfully unaware that they have been brought together by one fateful stormy event.

“This show, when [Trabbic] first pitched it to us, just was so unique,” Naito said in a separate statement. “It had all the qualities we look for. It was character driven. It had an ensemble that illustrated a really comedic relationship, with a backdrop that was fun and exciting. [And] it really feels original.”

“It’s a chance for us to just let our imaginations go wild,” Trabbic says.

Adds Johnson: “Parker is just a kid who’s learning life, but he [wears his] emotions on his sleeve, and because he’s a cloud, he’s pliable and can transform.”

Middlemost Post's greenlight comes on the heels of recent announcements for Big Nate, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, and a third season of The Casagrandes. The original series exemplifies Nickelodeon’s commitment to bringing fresh innovative content to kids and families around the world.

New Animal Crossing 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' House Has All the Elements

One Avatar: The Last Airbender fan pays homage with an Animal Crossing: New Horizons house that contains locations and characters from the iconic show.


All four elements from Avatar: The Last Airbender are present and accounted for inside one Animal Crossing: New Horizons player’s custom house, which also brings characters and locations from Nickelodeon’s beloved series to life. Talented fans of Nintendo's highly successful island life simulator have been making brilliant tributes to games like Breath of the Wild, movies, and TV shows using Animal Crossing’s flexible customization tools and item sandbox ever since the latest installment arrived on the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Among the various properties being frequently honored is Avatar: The Last Airbender. Players have recreated classic characters like Toph and Princess Azula, remade key locations such as the Water Tribe's Spirit Oasis, and have even reenacted the entire Last Airbender intro sequence within Animal Crossing: New Horizon’s colorful island world. These come alongside other great tributes to famous shows of the pas, including The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and modern favorites like WandaVision.


Now, Reddit user sadladybug846 has posted images of their in-game Avatar: The Last Airbender-themed house on the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit. This house has different rooms devoted to the Four Elements, Air, Water, Earth, and Fire, as well as spot-on recreations of characters like Prince Zuko, Katara, Aang, and even the perpetually unlucky Cabbage Merchant. There are also impressive recreations of outdoor locations from the series, like the aforementioned Spirit Oasis and the Crystal Catacombs under the city of Ba Sing Se.

In the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, certain individuals called Benders can manipulate the four elements for both combat and everyday life - with the titular Avatar being able to control all four. This simple premise served as the backbone of the show's mythology throughout its original three-season run on Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s, allowing it to spawn a sequel series in The Legend Of Korra and a not-quite-as-beloved live-action film in 2010. Currently, the franchise is set to return to the big screen in a new animated film under the watchful eye of original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, alongside a slew of new projects from their new production company, Avatar Studios. A live-action adaptation is also in development at Netflix, without the original creators' involvement.

Redditor sadladybug846’s in-game Animal Crossing: New Horizons house is a fun tribute to Avatar: The Last Airbender, capturing the colorful setting of the iconic Nickelodeon cartoon and the four elements at the heart of its mythos. The Avatar-based villagers are also a cute touch, especially as they reenact memorable moments from the show like Katara and Zuko’s discussion in the Catacombs from the end of Book Two. Overall, it’s just another great example of Animal Crossing fans using their creativity to pay tribute to the shows and characters that sparked said creativity, such as Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Bikini Bottom Heads to Keene, NH with MoCo Arts’ Production of ‘The SpongeBob Musical’

Keene, NH - MoCo Arts is thrilled to present their first live, in person performance with their High School Musical The SpongeBob Musical based on the hit Nickelodeon TV show, performed at the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College. The story tells the nautical tale of SpongeBob and his friends Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and even Plankton, as they embark on a journey to save the city of Bikini Bottom and change the world with their powerful optimism. With fantastic music written by today’s hit artists, this powerful story of friendship and heroism is the perfect show for kids and adults of all ages!


“Playing SpongeBob is a daunting task, being that he is such an iconic character.” Says Kobe Hachey, who will be playing the title character in the upcoming performance. “I really had to dive into my own childhood to draw experiences for this character. SpongeBob to me is someone the world needs right now, someone who isn’t afraid to take charge with such optimism and happiness. I am looking forward to having so much fun on stage and bringing Bikini Bottom to life. My biggest hope is that the little kids in the audience have fun watching musical theater like I did when I was a kid.”

The SpongeBob Musical is set to hit the Redfern Stage on May 30th at 7pm and May 31st at 1pm and 4pm. Tickets on sale now. To best adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, tickets for this show will be sold in pairs at $25/ticket, or $50 per pair. Ticket buyers must purchase both seats. Seats will be socially distanced per Keene State College Guidelines, mask wearing will be required, and screening will take place. Vans and Nickelodeon Come Together For Two New 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Collections

The three-way collab we never knew we needed.


New York designer Sandy Liang is joining forces with two other American classics: Vans and SpongeBob SquarePants. The end result is Vans x SpongeBob SquarePants by Sandy Liang, a capsule collection featuring both loose interpretations of the beloved Nickelodeon series referencing the cartoon’s aesthetics and more direct calls to the show's iconic characters.

Unveiled today, May 6, the five-piece collection’s offering includes a bucket hat, t-shirt, hoodie, and two pairs of classic Vans Sk8-Hi 38 DX reimagined by Liang. The hat, shirt, and hoodie feature SpongeBob and his friends, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, and Patrick Star, all dressed in items from the Sandy Liang ready-to-wear line. Between the frilly "Peter Pan" collar, the sandals, and fleecy quarter zips, the stars look to have taken a page straight out of the brand of New York-style that Sandy Liang’s collections are known for.


“I wanted to refer back to Bikini Bottom whenever possible, but also while bringing the characters more into the real world, as in my version of the Lower East Side,” Sandy told Teen Vogue. “I didn't want any of the outfits to feel too costumey and it was important that each of their outfits could be something I could see translated into a real garment.” 

Both pairs of shoes are a more artistic interpretation of the franchise, with aesthetic callbacks to the show’s own visuals. One pair offers a collage of prints that can be found in the show, as well as a print with origins from the designer’s own heritage. The other is a loose interpretation by Sandy the designer dedicated to Sandy the squirrel. It features pastel blue and green on the upper body with appliqued flower embellishments. “The mixed print shoe is a collage of different textiles and prints I was inspired by,” the designer told Teen Vogue. “The plaid is taken from the Chinatown checkered laundry storage totes, and the other prints were taken from the intro title backgrounds of different SpongeBob episodes.”

The Sk8-Hi 38 DX arrives in two different iterations. The first design features a patchwork application on the quarter panel, along with a classic plaid print with a flower cloud and groovy patterns. Meanwhile, the second pair is dedicated to Sandy Cheeks. The silhouette’s leather uppers boast a blue-green gradient and is finished with floral motifs reminiscent of the flower found on Sandy Cheek’s suit. In apparel, garments include a hoodie and tee printed with Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star and SpongeBob SquarePants on the front, as well as a Patrick Star bucket hat," notes HYPEBAE.

"On the first shoe, Liang blends patterns synonymous with her own Chinese heritage with Vans’ classic plaid print on the high-top sneaker. Mixed into that are groovy designs that Liang pulled directly from the animated series. The other shoe is a nod to the show’s Texas-born squirrel, Sandy Cheeks. The shoe is crafted with leather uppers that are covered in a blue-green hue. The silhouette is then finalized with floral graphics — a look found on the character’s own diving suit," notes Footwear News.



This isn't the first time Sandy collaborates with Vans, or SpongeBob SquarePants for that matter - the designer partnered with Nickelodeon to release a SpongeBob apparel range for the "Best Year Ever," celebrating the show's 20th anniversary. Vans has also previously released SpongeBob-inspired footwear.

In addition, another range with just the cartoon and Vans will release at the same time as Liang’s collaboration. The line is a range of Classic footwear, apparel and accessories fit for fans of all ages, and is comprised of a reworked Old Skool starring SpongeBob and his pet snail, Gary. Other pieces found in the collection are the Imaginaaation Short Sleeve Tee, Airbrush Woven Long Sleeve Tee, Best Buddies Hoodie, Jump Out Crew Tie Dye Tee and Patrick Star Mini Backpack.

Both collections drops June 4 and will be available online at vans.com/spongebob and in select Vans stores offline.

"Are ya ready kids? Dive down to Bikini Bottom for a F.U.N. collaboration with Vans and SpongeBob SquarePants! Show your love for the coolest creatures under the sea with this collection of footwear and apparel" reads the line's official description.

Key pieces from the Vans x SpongeBob SquarePants collection include:

- Old Skool checkerboard emblazoned quarter panel featuring SpongeBob and his loyal pet snail, Gary, hidden amongst the checks, and finished with a leather yellow Sidestripe and “Off The Wall” written in a font that is synonymous with the beloved animated series.

- Imaginaaation short sleeve tee that pays homage to the season three episode that depicts SpongeBob and Patrick as they use their creativity to play with an empty box.

- Airbrush Woven long sleeve tee highlighting the characters and cartoon elements of Bikini Bottom.
Best Buddies Hoodie with custom Vans “Off The Wall” graphic inspired by each character down the sleeve.

- Jump Out Crew Tie Dye Tee depicts SpongeBob leaping for joy.

- Patrick Star receives his very own mini backpack silhouette that is complimented by Vans iconic checkerboard pattern.

The Vans x SpongeBob collab with fashion designer, Sandy Liang, finds her reinterpreting iconic elements from the television show that have been illustrated by Sandy to provide a fashion forward take on SpongeBob SquarePants.

A second Sk8-Hi 38 DX pays homage to Sandy Cheeks, the multitalented scientist and adventure seeker. The hi-top uses premium leather uppers that showcase a dreamy blue-green gradient. The Sk8-Hi 38 DX is finished with delicate floral appliques that are reminiscent of the flower found atop Sandy Cheek’s diving suit.

- The collection is complete with a three-piece apparel and accessories assortment that feature Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star and SpongeBob SquarePants reinterpreted into Liang’s classic styles including a custom jellyfish shearling for SpongeBob and checkerboard pants for Patrick.

Additionally, Vans and Nickelodeon have collaborated to launch SpongeBob-themed Vans Customs exclusive prints! The Vans Customs exclusive prints feature SpongeBob in Bikini Bottom bubbles or enjoying a day out in Jellyfish Fields, a repeating pattern of his best friend Patrick Star and the whole cast — including Mr. Krabs, Gary, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, Larry the Lobster and even The Flying Dutchman — as an all-over design. Any of the four swatches can be customized with a diverse offering of prints and material on any Vans Classic footwear silhouette, and each style will be finished with a yellow sock liner. Fans can also use an exclusive sidewall print with SpongeBob checkerboard tape. The Vans x SpongeBob SquarePants Customs debuts June on 4 on the Vans webstore.

PUMA Unveils Special 'Rugrats' 30th Anniversary Footwear and Apparel Collection

Nickelodeon and PUMA have partnered to create the debut Puma x Rugrats collection, launching on June 4!


Puma & Nickelodeon have teamed up to launch the Rugrats x Puma Collection in celebration of the original series’ 30th anniversary!

Combining the classic Puma style with design cues from Nickelodeon's beloved '90s series, the Rugrats x Puma Collection excels in providing you with a retro flare, and features styles for both adults and children.

Front center in the Rugrats x Puma Collection are special iterations of the Puma Court Rider (adult), Puma Future Rider (kids) and Puma Suede (kids). Each sneaker pays homage to the original Rugrats cartoon with vibrant bright colors reminiscent of the ‘90s combines with design elements utilizing the cartoon’s characters including the babies’ favorite fictional character, Reptar. The Rugrats x Puma Court Rider and Rugrats x Puma Future Rider feature Nickelodeon's iconic orange splat with the Puma logo, whilst the Rugrats x Puma Suede features a blue version of the splat with the Puma logo.

Also included in the collaboration is a seven-piece apparel collection featuring tees, sweatshirts and warm up shorts featuring PUMA logos with the iconic Rugrats logo and classic characters from the cartoon.

Apparel in the collection includes: a short sleeve T-shirt in the style of Chuckie Finster's iconic blue shirt with the babies playing on the Puma logo; a long sleeve shirt in Susie Carmichael’s purple and gold pattern from her dress; a hooded sweatshirt featuring Reptar and the Pickles’ family dog, Spike, on the front with the Rugrats logo emblazoned on the back; and a pair of warmup shorts in the iconic green pattern just like Chuckie’s. All of the apparel styles will only be available in adult sizing.

The Rugrats x Puma Collection will release on June 4 on PUMA.com, at PUMA retail locations globally, and at FootLocker.com and online and in store at Foot Locker Inc. Prince points range from $40-$100.

"Comprised of the Future Rider, Court Rider and Classic Suede, the capsule blends PUMA design with cues from the beloved 1990s television program," notes Sneaker News. "The iconic suede-covered silhouette opts in for the most understated look of the bunch, donning a predominantly black ensemble complemented by hits of orange, purple and blue. By comparison, the accompanying pairs heavily indulge in shades of teal, while boasting equally-eye-catching hits of yellow, purple and orange across its upper and sole unit. 'Rugrats'-related branding appears across the tongue and sock-liner, with nods to Reptar being featuring on the Classic Suede’s heels. Apparel included in the collection further commemorates the green dinosaur, while also featuring Spike and other cast members."

Elsewhere in the world of Rugrats, the babies are set to return in a brand new CG-animated series, set to premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, May 27!
