Nickelodeon's "Albert" Wins 2017 MPSE Golden Reel Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors guild has announced the exciting news that Nickelodeon's brand-new holiday movie Albert won the "Best Sound & Music Editing: Television Animation" in the 64th MPSE Golden Reel Awards!

The MPSE Golden Reel Awards recognize outstanding achievement in sound editing in 23 categories encompassing feature films, television, animation, computer entertainment and student work. Nominees and winners represent the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding entertainment. The 64th MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony was held on Sunday 19th February 2017 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

Nick's all-new holiday movie Albert tells the story of a tiny Douglas fir tree who has big dreams of becoming Empire City’s most famous Christmas tree. When the search for this year’s tree is announced, Albert believes he has found his calling and hits the road with his two best friends, Maisie, the persistently positive palm tree, and Gene the abrasive and blisteringly honest weed, to fulfill his destiny.

With a few prickly situations along the way, and Cactus Pete out to stop him, Albert learns the true meaning of Christmas. The hour-long CG-animated TV movie features a star-studded voice cast, including Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live) in the title role; Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live) as Maisie, the persistently positive palm tree; Judah Friedlander (30 Rock) as Gene, the abrasive and blisteringly honest weed; Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street) as Cactus Pete; Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live) as a TV news correspondent; Brenna Yde (School of Rock) as Molly, Earth Mama’s granddaughter; John DiMaggio (Adventure Time) as Donny, Molly’s father; and Mary Pat Gleason (Mom) as Earth Mama, the owner and caretaker of the nursery, and features two original songs, “The Best Thing That Can Happen to Christmas” and “Christmasiest Christmas,” performed by the voice cast.

L-R: Maisie, Gene, Cactus Pete, and Albert in Nickelodeon’s TV movie, Albert.

Albert is directed by Oscar®-nominated Max Lang (The Gruffalo), executive produced by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (The Adventures of Pete & Pete), and written by Will and Aaron Eisenberg (The Massively Mixed-Up Middle School Mystery) and Joe Stillman (Shrek). The Eisenbergs are also co-executive producers, with Macgregor Middleton serving as producer. Viscardi serves as Nickelodeon’s SVP, Content Development, Nickelodeon Franchise Properties.

The winners of the "Best Sound & Music Editing: Television Animation" award are:

Supervising Sound Editor: Jeff Shiffman MPSE
Dialogue Editors: Michael Petak, Anna Adams
Foley Editor: Tess Fournier
Foley Artist: Craig Ng
Music Editor: Brad Breeck
Sound Effects Editors: Jessey Drake MPSE, Tess Fournier, Jeff Shiffman MPSE.

Nickelodeon's "Ride" Cast Dishes Hilarious Stories From Filming The Series

Are you as obsessed with Nickelodeon’s brand-new show, Ride, as NickALive! is?

To celebrate Nick's all-new show, Just Jared Jr. caught up with the cast and learned that as much as fans love what’s happening on screen — Horses, high school drama and much more — so much happens behind-the-scenes when the cameras aren’t rolling!

From unexpected moments that make it into the show to a Horse that literally picks your pockets, the cast gave JJJ behind-the scenes stories they’ve never told anyone before!

Kendra Leigh Timmins (“Kit”):

“I eventually got so used to the crazy fascinator (aka hair piece) on my head that I wore it on our lunch break and totally forgot it was there. I got so confused when people were giving me crazy looks.”

Rameet Rauli (“Anya”):

“I was so nervous to shoot the Big Ben destruction scene. It took two weeks to build and we had one take to do it. In the scene, you can see the panic and once it was knocked down, I giggled in relief thinking we cut. You can see me giggling in the scene, so embarrassing.”

Oliver Dench (“Will”):

“Sultan, the Horse that played Wayne, was so clever and rebellious. A few times we saw him mess with people. He would wait until his handler wasn’t paying attention, and then sneakily take their walkie-talkie out of his pocket and throw it in the mud. Sultan never got tired of that.”

Manuel Pacific (“Nav”):

“The scene where Will and Nav are having a competition in their room to see who can score the most points by dunking paper balls into the trash was very special. Not only because we were having incredible fun and it was one of the first scenes we ever shot, but because I improvised the line ‘Andrada Style.’ That line not only made it into the show but got written in for someone else later on.”

Alana Boden (“Elaine”):

“In the scene where Will and Elaine are talking before the competition, Oliver kept poking me in the back. If you watch closely at the end of the scene, I start to laugh!

Jonny Gray (“Josh”):

“My favorite scenes to film were when I was actually on a Horse. The fields we got to ride in were almost mystical, because Northern Ireland is so beautiful. The Horse I rode was also used in the movie War Horse, so I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was to have that opportunity. It really was an amazing experience.”

Want to re-watch any of these episodes, you can right now on Nick.com or on the Nick app.

Don’t miss the final week of the series starting TONIGHT! Weeknights @ 8 PM, only on Nickelodeon USA!

James Newton To Step Down As VP Of Programming At Nickelodeon UK & Ireland

James Newton, the Vice President (VP) of programming at Nickelodeon UK & Ireland, is leaving the children’s pay TV network after less than a year in the role.

Newton, who joined Nickelodeon in April last year, will exit at the end of this month.

A spokeswoman for Nickelodeon UK & Ireland confirmed to C21Media that the kidsnet is currently looking for a replacement in the role, which is responsible for developing the scheduling and editorial strategy for the Viacom-owned network across its seven specialty channels, as well as on-demand and digital platforms.

Newton, a former director of programming at NBCUniversal in the UK, has also worked at networks including Comedy Central (Paramount Comedy), UKTV (Gold), E!, Syfy, Universal Channel, and The Walt Disney Company (Disney Channel) during his 20-year career in broadcasting.

His appointment at Nickelodeon UK & Ireland last year followed the departure of the broadcaster’s VP and director of programming Tim Patterson in August 2015.

“During his time at Nickelodeon, James has managed the network’s programming and schedules to successfully launch new series and maintain our strong market position. We wish him all the best with his future endeavours,” said Alison Bakunowich, General Manager (GM) at Nickelodeon UK & Ireland.
