How 'Akihabara@DEEP' Almost Became an Anime Nicktoon

Akihabara@DEEP, a novel written by the same author as Ikebukuro West Gate Park, nearly became a Nicktoon...but didn't. What happened?

The success of major anime franchises like Naruto, One Piece and Bleach in the mid and late 2000s kickstarted a wave of popularity for anime and manga outside of Japan, especially in America. This saw programming blocks like Toonami feature shows that may have otherwise skipped the States. Likewise, both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network had several shows that, while not quite the same, were very clearly inspired by Japanese animation, such as Avatar: The Last Airbender.

One show that would have been like this was the planned cartoon Akihabara@DEEP. This series would have been one of several different adaptations of its source material, albeit one a bit more oriented toward American youth. Perhaps because of the mature content of its source material and the company's difficulty adapting it, the Nickelodeon series never saw the light of day. Here's the story behind the Akihabara@DEEP franchise and how its first chance to hit the States fell by the wayside.

What Is Akihabara@DEEP?

Akihabara@DEEP began as an action-dramedy novel written by author Ira Ishida. The series centered around a group of nerdy otaku [a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills] who, as the name would suggest, live in and around the Japanese city of Akihabara. Their goal is to use artificial intelligence to create an efficient new search engine that would cater to the wants and needs of Akihabara's denizens. However, their tech makes the group a target of the malevolent Digital Capital corporation.

The novel's popularity saw it adapted across several mediums over the years. The first of these was a manga, which was fairly accurate to the original book. Next came a more light-hearted live-action TV series, which provided more backstory and development for the characters, namely antagonist Nakagomi Takeshi. Conversely, the film adaptation that released after the TV series ended took a darker look at things, making the outcast nature of its otaku protagonists more central than before.

Akihabara@DEEP's Cancelled Nickelodeon Adaptation

The series' immense success didn't stop with books or live-action, though. In the same year as the TV show and the movie released, it was announced that Nickelodeon would produce a CG animated series that gave its own take on the novel, as part of a trio of projects the network planned to co-produced with international partners (the other two being DOMO-kun and Fortunatto).

This was interesting, given that all Japanese adaptations had been live-action. This resulted, or at least would have resulted, in a version of Akihabara@DEEP that, while still set in Japan, had a distinctly American flavor.

The character designs were courtesy of Ippei Gyoubu, who took it in a distinct, vibrant style akin to the likes of cult hit SEGA video game Jet Set Radio, as well as the art of Tank Girl creator and Gorillaz album artist Jamie Hewlett. At the time, Gyoubu stated that the series had already begun production a year before, and that it would be released in 2009 at the latest.

The biggest issue with the series' production stemmed from the material. The original novel and Japanese adaptations were targeted more toward older teens and young adults, with topics like prostitution in Akihabara being featured. As mentioned, the film version made the sometimes funny series darker and more serious than ever. Thus, turning it into a show for tweens would have taken considerable reconfiguring. Writer Robert Chang's pitch for the series was deemed too dark, and when the show eventually changed hands to Radar Cartoons, it fell into development hell. Since then, the series has yet to have so much as a proof of concept surface, though Gyoubu did release the aforementioned concept art that showcased how the series would have probably looked. It's doubtful that the series will ever see the light of day, but one can hope.

Would you of liked to have seen Akihabara@DEEP become a Nickelodeon show? Let me know in the comments!

Nickelodeon and Tongal Launch the 'Nick Creator Collective Project'

Nickelodeon has teamed up with Tongal.com to launch the Nick Creator Collective Project!

Nickelodeon and Tongal are looking for savvy social content creators who love all things Nickelodeon to join their "Nick Creator Collective" - a small and talented group of creators working across different disciplines that will act as an extension of the Nickelodeon team and take turns creating content for Nickelodeon-owned social channels, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., NickRewind, TeenNick, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Objectives

Can you create a meme faster than Lil and Phil can get into trouble? What about making an Instagram video that even Helga Geraldine Pataki would double tap on? You know, content that might be about a certain boy with a football-shaped head....

If you're a savvy social content creator and a fan of all things Nickelodeon, you might be the perfect fit to join the "Nick Creator Collective" - a new group of content creators working across different disciplines (graphic design, stop-motion animation, motion graphics/editing, and live-action). This group is going to help Nickelodeon create quick-turn social content for the amazing Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., NickRewind, TeenNick, and SpongeBob SquarePants brands. Nickelodeon-wide diversity & inclusion initiatives are another important category of social content that Nick is looking to create, which will span across all Nick brands. The main platforms Nick and Tongal will be focusing on are Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat (in priority order).

If chosen to be a part of this talented group, you'll have access to a continuous stream of projects with countless opportunities of all shapes and sizes across multiple Nickelodeon properties. The initial pilot phase will run approximately six months, and if the program is successful, you'll have an opportunity to rejoin the group.

Here's how it'll work.

THE PROCESS:

1. Several creators will be selected from each discipline (graphic design, stop-motion animation, motion graphics/editing, and live-action). In total, Nickelodeon and Tongal expect the Nick Creator Collective to be comprised of at least a dozen creators.

2. Once selected, Nickelodeon & Tongal will onboard each creator on the different brands, sub-brands, and properties.

3. After getting up to speed, creators with then have access to new opportunities open exclusively to the Nick Creator Collective.

4. For each new content need, the Nickelodeon team will provide a "content order form," which will scope out each creative ask for members of the Nick Creator Collective.

5. Depending on the fidelity (i.e. complexity) and timing of Nick's content need, opportunities will either go directly to a member of the Collective or there will be an ask for creative takes (i.e. treatments) from multiple creators, which Nick will choose between.

6. Take a look at the Menu of Options - this includes a breakdown of the fidelity, timing, and pricing per asset, for different types of asks. For example, on projects with longer timelines, multiple creators from the group will be asked for creative takes. On projects with shorter timelines, Nick and Tongal will go directly to a creator to see if they're available to complete a request. For quick-turn projects, Nickelodeon and Tongal will approach members of the Collective in a round robin manner (i.e. they'll go down the list of creators in order), so everyone has an equal opportunities to complete work. Timelines for these projects will range from a 24-hour turnaround to 4+ weeks.

7. Once Nick selects you to create content, you'll submit the deliverable on the Tongal platform for approval. For longer-term projects with a pre-production phase, Nick and Tongal will let you know what pre-production requirements are required for that particular project, and pre-production approvals will be handled on the Tongal platform as well.

8. Nickelodeon and Tongal expect the pilot of this initiative to last for 6 months and if successful, you'll have an opportunity to rejoin the collective.

The Nick Collective will be focusing on social content primarily for the below brands underneath the Nick umbrella:

NICKELODEON: Nickelodeon is the number one entertainment brand for kids, and it's a brand on the precipice of change. Nickelodeon is expanding its focus far beyond the traditional cable TV channel.
