'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Hypes Steelbook Release with Downloadable Valentine's Cards

A range of Avatar: The Last Airbender themed Valentine's cards have been released just in time for Valentine's Day. Available ahead of the show's SteelBook release on Blu-Ray, fans can now gift an Avatar related card to their Valentine alongside the pre-requisite chocolates and flowers!

Nickelodeon's selection (available to download as a pdf here) features fan-favorites Aang, Sokka, Prince Zuko and Toph. Each card is heavily themed for the occasion, with love hearts dotted around each one, including the inside where you can write a sweet note for your intended. They're also accompanied by messages that play off the character and their traits, with each one positioned in front of a location or symbol related to them.

The first card showcases Aang in mid-air, leg outstretched in a kick and hearts over his eyes, accompanied by the words "Because you've mastered all the elements of my heart." Sokka kneels in an intense crouch, his trusty boomerang in hand next to a sentiment reading, "For you can never be quenched, Valentine!" The Fire Nation's Prince Zuko stands proudly in front of a Fire Nation emblem, his card reading "Because you're the one I've been searching for." Finally, Toph's card showcases the Earth bender pushing forward mid-bend next to the words "I would move mountains for you, Valentine!" Each card can be folded over, allowing fans to print them off at home in preparation of Valentine's Day.

The SteelBook edition of the show, from Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment is a limited edition purchase, with only 20,000 units intended for release. It will be priced at $97.99 and offer numerous bonus features. Avatar launched a franchise after becoming a hit, leading to a live-action film and a fan-favorite follow-up series Legend of Korra, which ran for four seasons. The stories of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have continued on in graphic novel series.

It was recently announced that the show's original creators are returning for a live-action version of the beloved series for Netflix, which appears to be a retelling of the first show.

The Official SpongeBob Twitter Trolls the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie

The SpongeBob SquarePants Twitter trolls the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie with their own "redesign" of the iconic children's character.

SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated comedy show airing on Nickelodeon since 1999, following the adventures and shenanigans of the titular sponge in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. The show is immensely popular and one of the defining cartoons of a generation, as its memorable characters and quirky writing that can get laughs out of fans of all ages still permeates pop culture today.

Sonic the Hedgehog, an upcoming live-action movie based on the similarly iconic video game franchise, made headlines and punchlines for the original design of its main character, which was so heavily criticized that Sonic was completely redesigned, a move that set back Paramount Pictures about $5 million. Eventually, the eerily life-like Sonic was replaced by a more cartoonish version that more closely resembled the games, staying faithful to the one created by Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima, and was much more positively received by fans.

The official SpongeBob Twitter posted an image (above) of two side-by-side depictions of the undersea fry cook with the caption: "If SpongeBob were the #SonicMovie." On the left, a hideously realistic SpongeBob with unsettlingly human-like eyes, visibly hairy legs, and a row of terribly realistic human teeth - Sonic's teeth were one of the things fans found most unnerving about that first trailer, and the image of SpongeBob perfectly captures the creepiness of that part of the design. Of course, the leg stubble on the faux SpongeBob just might take it to a whole other level; on the right, a more familiar SpongeBob strikes the same pose.

Sonic the Hedgehog, starring Ben Schwartz as Sonic along with Jim Carrey and Westworld's James Marsden, releases this Valentine's Day after the redesign caused the film to be delayed by three months. In the series of video games, Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with super speed, whose main goal is usually to collect rings and stop the evil Dr. Robotnik. The 2020 film has Sonic leaving his alternate dimension and entering ours, where his incredible speed causes a power outage, alerting the government to his presence, who promptly send Robotnik (Carrey) on his trail. With the recent release of Detective Pikachu, another live-action video game adaptation with some unsettling depictions of the usually adorable Pokemon, the original trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was so widely ridiculed for Sonic's appearance that the drastic redesign had to be announced.

Although Sonic's director Jeff Fowler had his nerves about the redesign, the ultimate product was a clear improvement, and as some suspected, was the original intention of the artists before the studio intervened. Some fans worried about the amount of work these artists were asked to do in the relatively short three months, but when other brands and shows are jumping in on the joke, something has to be done.

The timing of SpongeBob's trolling is certainly meant to coincide with Sonic's release this Friday. Both Nickelodeon and Paramount are owned by ViacomCBS.

SpongeBob SquarePants himself also has upcoming movie. The 3D film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which dropped a new trailer during this year's Super Bowl, will see SpongeBob and Patrick go on a massive search after SpongeBob's beloved pet Gary the Snail goes missing. The movie is set to be released during Memorial Day weekend. The series, which is currently celebrating 20 years on air with the "Best Year Ever", also has a couple of spin-offs in the works: Kamp Koral, following 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp, is also slated to premiere on Nickelodeon during Summer 2020, and an untitled spin-off which will focus on Squidward Tentacles, which will debut on Netflix.

It's always interesting to see how the internet absorbs elements of popular culture and adapts them into something new. While the original Sonic movie design is no more, the tweet from the official SpongeBob account shows that it will never be forgotten. It's likely to live on eternally, like so many other popular memes. Of course, the Sonic design will should also be forever remembered as a warning to movie studios about the dangers of veering too far from the source material that fans are familiar with. Because things could quickly get ugly! Let's just hope this is the last time we see SpongeBob SquarePants with human teeth - and the last time we're reminded that Sonic the Hedgehog almost featured its titular character with human teeth.

Nickelodeon Latin America Greenlights Local Version of 'Nick Master Slime'

Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) has announced the aweslime news that, following the success of Nickelodeon Brazil's (Brasil) hit game show Nick Master Slime, Nickelodeon Latinoamérica will be making a localised Latin American Spanish version! The news follows Nickelodeon Brasil recently renewing the Brazilian Portuguese version of a second season.

Set in a Slime Lab, throughout the series, Nick Master Slime sees contestants take on fun and challenging challenges in pursuit of the title of "Master Slimer", using a variety of ingredients to use and mix into the perfect slime needed to win.

Do you know EVERYTHING there is about slime and want to compete in fun crazy games and super sticky challenges against other slime enthusiasts to make the perfect slime and be titled "Master Slimer"? Now's your chance!

Nickelodeon Latinoamérica are now inviting kids in México aged between 9 and 12 years old to apply to become contestants on Nick Master Slime! Kids can register their interest on appearing on the series by visiting and filling out the form. Participants should also upload a video telling Nick the reason they love slime and why they should be part of Nick Master Slime. Executive produced, directed and written by Tyler Perry, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan follows a family whose world is turned upside down when their nephew, Young Dylan (Dylan Gilmer), an aspiring hip-hop star, moves in unannounced. When Dylan’s grandmother Viola (Wright) realizes raising her grandson is too much to take on, she decides to send him to live indefinitely with her affluent son Myles Wilson (Carl Anthony Payne II, Martin), his wife Yasmine (Mieko Hillman, Teen Wolf) and their two kids Rebecca (Celina Smith) and Charlie (Hero Hunter, The Purge).

'LEGO City Adventures' Reportedly Renewed for Seasons 2 & 3

Paris-based production studio Passion Paris is reportedly working on a third season of LEGO City Adventures, which, if correct, means that Nickelodeon and the LEGO Group's popular high-stakes CG-animated comedy series has been renewed for at least two additional seasons! Please note that this news has yet to be confirmed by either Nickelodeon or LEGO Group. A crew of around 80 people are said to be currently working on the season at Passion Paris. The studio provided Art Direction in the first season of LEGO City Adventures.

A rollercoaster ride of fantastic fun, the series depicts the funny, smart, and dynamic slices of life within the sprawling and diverse LEGO City community, following the absurd and action-packed adventures of its residents.

LEGO City Adventures made its world debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019, and is currently rolling out on several of Nickelodeon’s international territories.

ViacomCBS Networks Appoints Pierre Cheung as General Manager of New Asia Organization/Structure


Singapore, February 12, 2020 – ViacomCBS Networks has appointed Pierre Cheung to an expanded role as Senior Vice President & General Manager of Asia with a brief to better align the company’s operations between these markets and target new commercial opportunities as a result. This follows the company’s organizational restructure which was announced recently. Cheung reports into Raffaele Annecchino, President, ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia.

ViacomCBS Unveils Findings of 'Are We There Yet?: Today’s Parents, Tomorrow’s Kids' Global Research Study

Over 70 Percent Drive Household Decisions

60 percent of parents surveyed say their children control what’s on TV

58 percent of parents use screen time to reward good behavior,
nearly 90 percent believe children learn best through play

MIAMI—FEB. 12, 2020 –ViacomCBS, parent company of Nickelodeon, today released its newest global research study, Are We There Yet?: Today’s Parents, Tomorrow’s Kids. The study finds that today’s kids come first in their households, and that the parent/kid relationship is closer than ever before: Almost all parents surveyed prioritize having a close relationship with their child, and want their child to feel they can tell them anything.

The study, which includes a global survey of over 8,000 parents of kids under age 12 across 16 countries, as well as a literature review and expert interviews,* found that 72 percent of kids globally play a role in household decisions, with 60 percent of parents surveyed saying that when watching TV together, their child usually chooses what to watch. In addition, nearly 60 percent of parents today use screen time to reward good behavior, which reinforces the importance of play—nearly 90 percent of parents surveyed believe their children learn best through play.

Global consensus revealed that for some, parental peer pressure can be a challenge; however, parents are concerned about many other things in relation to their kids’ lives. Children’s future, mental health and bullying ranked as the top three worries parents have globally regarding their kids.

Are We There Yet?: Today’s Parents, Tomorrow’s Kids revealed five key areas that explore how kids are being raised today, how this will shape kids’ futures, and what it means for content makers looking to connect with the next generation.

Key findings include:

Kids are central in their households and in their parents’ lives.

· 96 percent of parents agree “My child is the most important thing in my life” (over 90 percent in every country surveyed)

· 48 percent of parents agree “I often compare myself to other parents”

· Parents’ top three worries regarding their kids are:

          o “Child’s future” (49 percent)

          o “Child’s mental health” (43 percent)

          o “Bullying (in person)” (42 percent)

The relationship between today’s kids and parents is different.

Kids have a much more open, closer relationship with their parents than in the past. Today’s kids are being given more guidance on how to navigate the real world, as well as greater responsibility.

o 72 percent of kids play a role in household decisions, according to parents

o 60 percent of parents agree “When we’re watching together, my child usually controls what is on the TV”

o 96 percent of parents agree “I want my child to feel that they can tell me anything”

o In the U.S., kids are ahead of the global average for playing a big role in household decision-making (US 29 percent vs. Global average 23 percent)

Parents’ worries are leading to household tensions in family life, where conflicting priorities require a balancing act.

Tensions include:

o Restricting Screen Time vs. Using Screen Time as a Reward

o 58 percent of parents agree “I use TV or screen time to reward good behavior from my child”

o 80 percent of parents agree “I limit screen time for my child as much as possible”

Parents’ attitudes towards screen time depend on the type of screen and what it’s used for:

o 84 percent of parents agree “Watching TV together is great for family bonding time”

o 65 percent of parents agree “Playing video games can be good for a child’s development”

Formal learning vs. Play

o 88 percent of parents agree “Children learn best through play”

o 77 percent of parents agree “Children learn best through structured classes”

Today’s parenting differs from parenting in the past.

The things that today’s parents tell us they are doing more than their own parents are:

o “Tell my child / children I love them”

o 59 percent of parents say “I do this more than my parents”

o “Play with my child / children”

o 55 percent of parents say “I do this more than my parents”

Parents today also have a more open, flexible approach to rules:

o 53 percent of parents told us that they “Take time to explain the reasons behind my rules” more than their parents did

o 84 percent of parents agree “Sometimes as a parent you have to bend your own rules to get things done”

‘Parent’ has turned from a noun into a verb.

’Parent’ has become something you do, rather than something you are. Today’s parents – both moms and dads – are heavily involved in all areas of their kids’ lives.

o Parents are involved “a lot” or “somewhat” in the following areas of their child’s life:

          o “Well-being and happiness” (96 percent) (Moms 98 percent, Dads 95 percent)

          o “Health” (95 percent) (Moms 97 percent, Dads 94 percent)

          o “Education” (94 percent) (Moms 95 percent, Dads 92 percent)

          o “Screen time” (84 percent) (Moms 87 percent, Dads 82 percent)

o 41 percent of parents strongly agree “I would do almost anything to help my child succeed." (A further 45 percent agree somewhat.)

o Parents are trying to instill a range of qualities in their kids, with the top three being:

          o “Respect” (47 percent chose this in their 5 most important qualities)

          o “Confidence” (47 percent)

          o “Kindness” (36 percent)

All of these factors are shaping parents’ hopes for their kids’ futures, and parents think their kids are going to turn out even better than previous generations.

Parents globally say the following are their most important hopes for their kids’ futures:

o “Healthy” (65 percent)

o “Happy” (64 percent)

o “Following their dreams” (45 percent)

o “Financial stability” (37 percent)

o “Good education” (36 percent)

          o For parents in the U.S., gaining a good education is a key hope for their kids; it ranks 3rd highest compared to 5th highest globally. Parents in the U.S. were also more likely to want their kids to be self-sufficient (27 percent of US parents said this was one of their top 5 hopes vs. 22 percent globally) and go to university (18 percent vs. 15 percent globally)

Parents predict that when their kids grow up, compared to previous generations, they will be more:

o “Tech-savvy” (65 percent)

o “Caring about the environment” (59 percent)

o “Curious about the world” (55 percent)

o “Intelligent” (54 percent)

o “Creative” (53 percent)

o “Independent” ranks in the top 5 for the U.S. (4th vs. 7th globally), just ahead of intelligent

New 'Invader Zim' Comics from Oni Press Launching in April 2020

The two projects are based on Jhonen Vasquez's cult character.

In the wake of last year’s hit Netflix movie Enter the Florpus, the Invader Zim renaissance is fully underway, with Portland, Oregon's Oni Press launching a new quarterly comic book series based on the cult character, along with a new series of collected editions featuring the best comic adventures of the past!

Invader Zim Quarterly will begin in April 2020 with "GIR's Big Day", featuring a story by Eric Trueheart and Aaron Alexovich, launching an extra-length series retailing for $5.99 that will replace Oni’s current Invader Zim monthly, which, launched in 2015, will end with the 50th issue, written by the character’s creator, Jhonen Vasquez, also due out in April.

July will see the debut of a series of Best of Invader Zim collected editions, bringing together stories from Oni’s first Zim series. Invader Zim: Best of World Domination — a $9.99 anthology of four stories featuring Zim’s attempts to take over the planet, each one cruelly foiled by pesky humans who should know better. (The release of this title is timed to Abrams' publication of The Art of Invader Zim hardcover.) Invader ZIM Best of GIR is slated for November 2020.

Invader Zim has been a cult character since the 2001 debut of the eponymous series on Nickelodeon. The show ran one year before being revived on Nicktoons in 2006 for a delayed second season. Oni’s first Zim series launched in 2015.
