Aaron Alexovich Auctioning Off Original 'Invader ZIM: The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever' Animation Art to Benefit The Trevor Project

Proceeds from the Easter Platypus auction will benefit the TREVOR PROJECT.

Are you still looking for the perfect Christmas gift? Well, waiting until the last minute has finally paid off, because if you act before Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020 at 3:40 PM Pacific Time, you could get your greasy fingers on some original Invader Zim art by Aaron Alexovich!


In a Tweet sent December 16th, 2020, Alexovich announced that he was putting original artwork from the production of the “final” episode of Invader Zim, “The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever,” up for bidding on eBay, with proceeds from the auction to benefit The Trevor Project, a crisis intervention organization and suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQ youth.

Created by indie comics artist Jhonen Vasquez (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac; I Feel Sick), Invader Zim tells the story of extraterrestrial outcast Zim, from the planet Irk, who reams of greatness. Unfortunately, though, he's hopelessly inept as a space invader. Desperate to be rid of the annoying Zim, his planet's leaders, the Almighty Tallest, send him on a mission to infiltrate Earth, providing him with leftover, cobbled-together equipment, including his malfunctioning - yet extremely faithful - robot, GIR. To their consternation, Zim succeeds in setting up a base on Earth and infiltrating human culture, posing as a human child as he plots the planet's downfall. Only Zim's archnemesis, Dib, recognizes that Zim is an alien, and of course, nobody believes Dib's claims.


When Invader Zim was cancelled mid-way through its second season, the crew was told they could select one of several in-production episodes to complete as a makeshift season finale. They chose “The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever,” which originally aired December 10th, 2002. That episode includes a scene in which Zim, GIR, and Mini-Moose appear in Easter Platypus disguises – and the artwork available through the current eBay auction depicts these shirmp sauce slathered outfits.


While the show was cancelled in 2002, its legacy lives on. In July 2015, Oni Press began releasing a monthly Invader Zim comic, which included work by Vasquez, Alexovich, and other veterans of the original series, including Eric Trueheart. While the Invader Zim monthly comic ended with issue #50, the Invader Zim Quarterly launched in June 2020, with a first issue featuring a story by Trueheart, Alexovich, and Fred C. Stresing.


If you’re interested in watching the original run of Invader Zim, it is currently available for streaming on CBS All Access. Meanwhile, the 2019 follow-up movie Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus is available for streaming through Netflix.

ViacomCBS EMEAA and Down Madrid Partner for Virtual Christmas Charity Ruffle

Employees at ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia's (EMEAA) Madrid office recently participated in ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA's first Virtual Christmas Charity Ruffle in collaboration with the association Down Madrid!


During the celebration, ViacomCBS raffled 20 incredible prizes donated by the company's brands and by Down Madrid, including lots of Nickelodeon goodies, raising more than 500€ for the organisation!

This donation will be directed entirely to the social work of the association, which is dedicated to accompanying people with intellectual disabilities and their family from prenatal diagnosis to elderly, so that they reach their maximum personal development and social inclusion. ‘Honoring Our Stories’ Themed 'Black in Animation Awards Show' Coming December 6

Black Women Animate and Cartoon Network Studios launch new initiative to recognize and honor Black people in animation who are blazing a trail to the future.


LOS ANGELES -- Black Women Animate (BWA Studios) and Cartoon Network Studios have partnered to launch the inaugural Black in Animation Awards Show. This new initiative will honor Black people in animation who have and currently are paving the way for this sector of the entertainment industry. This awards show will be the closing event for the third annual BWA Studios Boot Camp training event on December 6, 2020 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM EST. Attendees can watch the awards show virtually and can register to watch the show and participate in the BWA Studios Boot Camp here.

The theme of this year’s event is “Honoring Our Stories.” The inaugural honorees include Vanessa Morrison, President of Streaming at Walt Disney Studios (Trailblazer Award); Bruce Smith, EP & Director at Disney Television Animation (Narrative Creator Award); Dr. Ayoka Chenzira, TV Director and Experimental Filmmaker (Cultural Innovator Award); Tina Obo, Director (Rising Star Award); Latoya Raveneau, Director at Disney Television Animation (Next Gen Award), and Carole Holliday, Animator and Story Artist (Lifetime Achievement Award).

Honorees were selected by the Awards Show Nomination Committee inclusive of industry veterans and community leaders: Camille Eden (VP of Recruiting and Talent Development, Nickelodeon), Nicole Rivera (Vice President, Original Series Development, Cartoon Network), Lynne Southerland (Director/Showrunner), Sidney Clifton (EP, Jim Henson & Deluxe Animation, Supervising Producer, BWA Studios), Carl Reed (President, Lion Forge Animation), Jinko Gotoh (Producer, Netflix ), and Marlon West (Head of Effects, Disney).

The show will be hosted by Grammy award-winning artist Estelle. In addition, Estelle will perform True Kinda Love, the fan-favorite song, as sung by her character Garnet, from Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe: The Movie.

“Three years into our start up, we are continually dismayed at the lack of knowledge people have about Black legends in animation,” reflected BWA Studios Founder and CEO Taylor K. Shaw and Founding and Managing Partner JLove Calderón. “Prior to this show, there was no place to really honor and acknowledge the incredible role that Black folx have had in the animation industry. Keeping to our motto: if you don't see it, create it! Thus, the first ever Black in Animation Award Show was established.”

The third annual BWA Studios Boot Camp is a free, two-day virtual event which includes intensive workshops and insightful panels featuring industry experts and animation gurus from Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, Nickelodeon, Disney, Inspire Justice and 9 Story Media. The Boot Camp is produced by A Wynn Wynn Production. Cartoon Network Studios is a founding partner.

Art Trek

When CAMILLE EDEN transferred to SF State from Diablo Valley College in the late 1980s, she thought she was training to be an artist … though she didn’t know what that would actually mean after graduation. She just loved drawing. A career? A future? That she hadn’t figured out. Then one of Eden’s classes — a course that emphasized interdisciplinary arts — changed everything.

“It was in that class that I found out you could draw and make a living, because a [movie] art director sketches,” Eden recalls. “At that point I shifted from art to film.”

A few years later, Eden got in the door at renowned special effects house Industrial Light & Magic thanks to a fellow Gator. “BRIDGET GOODMAN (B.A., ’92), was a receptionist there, though later she became a phenomenal digital painter,” Eden says. “She kept telling me, ‘Keep applying.’ And when I got hired I started as a coordinator in their security department.”

Eden eventually parlayed that access into a long career as a visual effects artist. In the early 2000s, she shifted from hands-on production to artist recruitment. After spending nine years as a talent acquisition and outreach manager at Walt Disney Animation Studios, she recently joined Nickelodeon as its VP of animation recruitment and development. Now she’s the one opening the door for young artists hoping to jump-start their careers by working on Nickelodeon shows like “SpongeBob SquarePants” and the upcoming animated “Star Trek” spinoff “Prodigy.”

“When I started, I didn’t see as many women or people of color or people with disabilities in the industry,” Eden says. “Doing something about that is a passion of mine. I want to keep moving the industry forward.”

Melissa & Doug will continue to evaluate licensing as ‘an area of growth for the firm’

The global toy maker, Melissa & Doug has expressed its plans to continue to evaluate licensing “as an area to grow its reach”, as it looks for the right platforms through which to reach more parents and children.

The traditional toy specialist hit a major milestone last month when it revealed the details of its ‘biggest push into the licensing space to date,’ through a partnership with ViacomCBS Consumer Products to launch a range of PAW Patrol and Blue’s Clues & You co-branded toys.

The move was billed by the toy maker as its latest steps towards international expansion, offering the firm a ‘larger platform to reach more parents and children’ with the messaging around the benefits of hands-on, open-ended play that has become somewhat synonymous with the Melissa & Doug portfolio.

Speaking with ToyNews, the firm has stated that licensing will be an area the company will continue to monitor and evaluate as an area of growth wherever its supports the core mission statement of Melissa & Doug to promote play.

“Right now, we’re focused on and excited about the roll our of the products with Nickelodeon in Fall 2021,” said Dave Henderson, chief commercial officer at Melissa & Doug.

“As a company, we seek opportunities with brands that align with our core values, and like Melissa & Doug, PAW Patrol and Blue’s Clues & You! are grounded in fostering imaginative play, problem solving, and creative thinking.

“The partnership affords us a larger platform to reach more parents and children with our message about the benefits of hands-on, open-ended play. The toys designed under the partnership – for both PAW Patrol and Blue’s Clues & You – will be developed to educate and empower pre-schoolers through active engagement, with a focus on problem solving and creative thinking.

"Here's an interesting find.

This seems to have been a trailer that I can only assume was in development shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, judging from the English text. If you watch closely, you'll notice that there are a lot of altered scenes and even some cut dialogue exchanges and animation from the final version of the film. You can see that some scenes look unpolished, as they were still working with lighting and compositing through April into May (see article listed below).

This trailer was used to promote the Chinese release of the film on the streaming service QQ last month, and is accompanied by the initial trailer that was released late last year." - Dervinci.
