Original Red Ranger Reveals The Line He Hated The Most From 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'

Original Red Ranger Austin St. John has plenty of amazing memories from his time on the show, but there is one particular line that he wishes he could have back.


Austin St. John played Red Ranger Jason Scott during the first two seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, though early on no one knew it would become the goliath it is today. That was partly why the cast didn't really have much say in the lines written for them in the first shows, and there's one line that St. John still hates to this day (via Steven Alvarez).

"The first ten episodes after the pilot we had almost no creative say," St. John said at San Francisco Comic Con. "They were like this is what you do. I mean they like what we did as characters, but we had very little creative say when it came to the script or how we might change a line or anything. It didn't take long for us to be like "I'm just not saying that". I wish that had happened when I had episode whatever it was with Pineapple the Clown. I hate that line to this day, so if I could've changed that one I would have, but I couldn't yet."

The episode he is referring to is titled "No Clowning Around", where Pineapple turns Trini's cousin Sylvia into a cardboard cut out. St. John remembers the line all too well and has some ideas for what could've worked better.

"Another six months and I would've totally rewritten that thing and been like "No, Jason's going to come around the corner like Dirty Harry and be like do you feel lucky punk? Do Ya," St. John said. He would have greatly preferred that to what the script called for, which was "You're going down clown!"

When you add the ultra-serious tone in which it is delivered in the episode, you can very much understand why he hates it.

As it turns out, the cast started to hate him too after a while, thanks to the constant takes of that scene they had to go through.

"22 takes because I couldn't do it with a straight face," St. John said. "Everyone hated me that day. They were like this isn't funny anymore and I was like "it really is, sorry."

Austin St. John will be sharing more memories like that next month, as he is scheduled to appear at New York Comic Con. Power Rangers fans will also have a chance to meet Jason David Frank, the cast of Power Rangers Ninja Steel, and fellow Mighty Morphin castmates David Yost and Walter Jones (Space Cases), along with current Mighty Morphin Power Rangers writer Kyle Higgins.

Austin, Walter and David will also be joining Karan Ashley and David J. Fielding at Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con 2017.

Both events should provide Morphinominal times.

"Happy Happy, Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story" Relaunches On Indiegogo

You may recall that back in July NickALive! brought you news of Happy Happy, Joy Joy, a documentary about the immensely popular Nickelodeon animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show, which was raising funds on Kickstarter.


Unfortunately, the campaign ended up falling short of its goal, but Ren and Stimpy fans need not despair, because it’s been re-launched on Indiegogo. And this time, instead of the original hefty goal of $289,400, they’re only trying to raise a modest $70,475, which I’m confident they will achieve before the campaign ends next month. They’re already more than halfway there.

If you never watched The Ren & Stimpy Show (believe me, you’re missing out on a lot), the series followed the exploits of a cat named Stimpy and a chihuahua named Ren. It was followed by an adults-only spinoff called Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon”.

The animated series created by John Kricfalusi was part of Nickelodeon’s original Nicktoons line-up in the early 1990s.

A quarter of a century after first invading American homes, Nickelodeon’s The Ren & Stimpy Show remains a game-changing icon of TV animation. And now, a new feature-length documentary project seeks to reflect the creative brilliance sometimes lost behind the controversial show’s black comedy, toilet humor and sexual innuendo, which often caused altercations with Standards and Practices, but earned ardent fans worldwide.

From production industry veterans Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood, Happy Happy, Joy Joy – The Ren & Stimpy Story will delve deep into the world of Ren the rage-fueled chihuahua and Stimpy the simpleton cat. The filmmakers’ goal is to show that the creativity that fueled the animated series is akin to the intrepid genius and controversial merit of Banksy and Warhol.

The feature length documentary, Happy Happy, Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story, now in postproduction, reveals the collective genius -- and longstanding influence -- of a series that was cut in its prime. While the departure of John Kricfalusi, the show’s creator, has been well reported, the story of how Ren & Stimpy upended TV animation; touched everyone from neurosurgeons to the superstars at Pixar, AND became a multi-billion property, is fading into obscurity. The film aims to change that through insights and archived art gleaned from over 45 artists, directors and network execs connected to the show, plus art historians, and a range of fans. The film also features original shorts from Ren & Stimpy cartoonists.

The documentary features interviews key talents who worked on the show, including Bob Camp, Vincent Waller, Billy West, Chris Reccardi, Jim Gomez, and Vanessa Coffey. Commentary about the influence of the show also comes from celebrity fans such as self-described “Hillbilly Bartender from Myrtle Beach” to celebrities like Jack Black, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Bobby Lee, Billy Gibbons, and Iliza Shlesinger and more. But the real treasure trove will be the “mountains of archival art work, network notes and storyboards that have been locked away for the past 25 years” that we’ll see in the documentary.

So what will a contribution by you help these filmmakers accomplish? Here’s a breakdown of where the money is going:

- Clip Licensing & Legal – (55%) – The documentary has the initial OK from Nickelodeon to license Ren & Stimpy art work and scenes from the series. A huge coupe! The team behind the documentary also cut in archival footage from the 90’s. All of this will need to be paid for. The more they raise, the more R&S footage they can use!

- Color Grading – (10%) – The film is shot entirely in 4K. The raw footage looks amazing but to make it shine after assembly, the production team need a final color grade.

- Main Titles & Interstitials – (15%) – The team have some killer ideas on how to visually present the archival material. Simon Clowes, who is the motion graphics genius behind the title sequences for Superman Returns, Sherlock Holmes, and Xmen: First Class is doing the documentary a huge favor but the team still need to pay his team.

- The Rewards – (30%) Yup, all those great looking items are high quality and cost dough….some of which is going directly to the original R & S artists.

PAW Patrol Live! "Race To The Rescue" To Visit Saroyan Theatre In Fresno, CA Between Oct. 7-8

PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue” based on hit preschool series PAW Patrol, which airs on Nickelodeon and is produced by Spin Master Entertainment, will visit Saroyan Theatre at the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center in Fresno, CA on Oct. 7 and 8, 2017!


PAW Patrol Live!, presented by Pedigree, brings everybody’s favorite pups to the stage for an action-packed, high-energy, musical adventure. When Mayor Goodway goes missing during the day of The Great Adventure Bay Race, the pups come to the rescue. Join Ryder, Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma, Skye and Everest when they visit Fresno.

Featuring a cast of everybody’s favorite PAW Patrol characters and presented by VStar Entertainment Group and Nickelodeon, PAW Patrol Live! shows that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” and shares lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problem-solving as the characters each use their unique skills and teamwork. The show includes two acts and an intermission, and engages audiences with Bunraku puppetry, an innovative costuming approach that brings the PAW Patrol characters to life on stage with their vehicles and packs.


“Using Bunraku, puppetry elements are built into costumes worn by real actors to create a wonderful combination of life-size pups and to make a stronger connection with the audience. The performance features up-tempo music and a brand new cleverly written script that is a good introduction to live theater for kids. Kids Learn Skills While Having Fun At Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum's "Day Of Play"

If there’s one thing the Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum in Michigan specializes in, it’s play.

The Museum, along with Morey Courts and the Isabella Community Events Arena, teamed up on Friday 29th September 2017 to show local children the benefits of play in honor of the fifth annual “Day of Play”.

From 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Isabella County kids could take in a wide variety of activities at the shared campus, located at the corner of Remus and Isabella Roads.

Liz Conway, executive director of the museum, said play is essential for kids and they strive to make it as fun as possible.

“What we look to do is promote play. We know that play is so essential to a child’s well-being and we just want every child to have that ability to come out and play and experience it,” Conway told the Morning Sun. “They’re learning gross and learning skills, cognitive skills, critical thinking and social skills all through play.”

The event is run in conjunction with Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play which encourages kids to turn off televisions and get outside and play.

Organizations like Central Michigan Play on the way, the CMU pompom team, the Chippewa Nature Center and several others set up in the museum parking lot and greeted kids as they walked in the door.

Inside, a live band, corn hole, and a smoothie station took up the dance floor, while kids could use the climbing wall, slides and other activities inside the museum.

Out back, the Isabella County Police Department had a car seat station for parents to bring in car seats and make sure they were safe and the proper size for their child.

Mt. Pleasant resident Michael Hyde brought his son to “Day of Play” for the second-straight year. Hyde got free bike helmets last year and took advantage of the car seat checks Friday.

What he found out surprised him.

“I just found out my car seat was expired, so I ca either hold on for another inch and a half for him to grow or I can just buy a new one. I’m debating on that one,” he said. “We love it here and we haven’t even been over to Morey Courts yet.”

Angie Eldred, also from Mt. Pleasant, brought her two daughters after seeing the event on Facebook.

Eldred said she didn’t know what to expect at “Day of Play,” but was blown away when they got there.

“They have so many different activities here you can learn and do different things. It’s very cool,” she said. “Kids need to be active to stay healthy and grow.”



At Morey Courts, kids could play basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, hula hoop or even play a large-scale version of jenga. Ice skating at the arena was also free of charge.

Alexis Straub, director of events and marketing at the museum, said the group usually starts planning the event in April and had 20 vendors this year — a new high.

With sign language students from CMU, a new educational aspect was added this year, but the main goal of Day of Play remained the same.

“It’s really awesome to offer a free and fun night. It’s beautiful out and we’re ready to play,” Straub said. “A lot of our vendors have been here since the beginning so they know what to expect. Every year we just reach out to more and more people and hopefully get reoccurring groups.

“It’s all about play.”

Worldwide Day of Play was created by Nickelodeon in conjunction with its “Let’s Just Play” campaign. The annual event is designed to encourage children and adults to turn off the television and play, especially outdoors.

All this summer, Nickelodeon has been showing their dedication to all things active and playful with the networks annual Worldwide Day of Play tour! This year Nick has made stops in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, and San Juan (Puerto Rico), and finished up at Prospect Park in Brooklyn on September 16th. The national events eventually culminated in the Worldwide Day of Play on Sept. 30, when Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons and TeenNick went dark to encourage kids to go outside and play.

Nickelodeon Greece To Premiere "Nella The Princess Knight" On Saturday 7th October 2017

Preschoolers will set off on thrilling adventures in a kingdom far away where there lives a... Princess Knight! Nickelodeon's brand-new animated preschool series, Nella the Princess Knight, follows Nella, an unconventional 8-year-old who possesses the royal qualities of a princess, like compassion and grace, while also embodying the courage and determination of a brave knight. Whenever a problem arises, Nella embarks on daring quests to save her kingdom through her unique ability to transform from a princess into Nella the Princess Knight.

eOne Celebrates Peppa Pig Success In China

Peppa Pig is becoming a big hit in China where sales of her toys, clothes and home furnishings, including Peppa Pig branded beds, sofas, and work desks, are on the up.


The cartoon pig's popularity in the country has been driven by nationwide showings of her TV programme and a strong social media presence.

Peppa has attracted 34 billion views on the different Chinese platforms since the brand launched in 2015.

The toy is also bringing in increased revenue in the US for Entertainment One (eOne), which owns the beloved preschool brand.

Peppa successfully hit the big screen this year, with Peppa Pig: My First Cinema Experience taking £3.6m in the UK and A$2.2m (£1.3m) in Australia and New Zealand.

The group, which also owns film business eOne and a television arm, said in a trading update on Wednesday that all divisions were performing as expected. However, box office revenues from films it distributes had nearly halved because of a lack of new releases.

Movies due to be released before the end of 2017, including Steven Spielberg-directed film The Post, Paddington 2 and A Bad Moms Christmas, should reverse that trend, EOne said.


Andrew Carley, head of global licensing at Entertainment One, told the BBC that the biggest selling item in China had been the traditional story books.

Since April 2016, they have sold 18 million copies and he said: "The numbers in China are unlike anything we've seen in any other territory.

"The sales have blossomed probably as a result of that need or want of parents to educate children in English."

The next country to welcome Peppa is set to be Japan, with Mr Carley adding that then the pig would be truly global.

Local touch

Analyst Tom Harrington, of Enders Analysis, said the character's success in China was "amazing".

He told the BBC: "China is a massive market but is very difficult for Western media companies to get into for two reasons.

"One is censorship, and the other is that you can't operate there without an alliance with a Chinese business.

"However, children's content is very transferable between cultures, especially animation which is very easy to dub over to make it look local."

He said the most popular TV shows in any country are always locally made. For example, only one foreign programme made it into the top 150 shows watched in the UK last year.

Shares in EOne fell 1.4% to 254.5p, valuing the company at £1.1bn, but the stock has risen more than a fifth over the past 12 months.

Peppa Pig is broadcast in 180 countries around the world, including on many Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels, in 40 different languages. The animated series follow the characters of Peppa and her family, including Daddy pig, Mummy Pig and her brother George.

Xilam Secures New Licensing Agents For Flagship Brand "Oggy & The Cockroaches"

Award-Winning French Animation Production Company Xilam secures new agents for OGGY & THE COCKROACHES



Xilam, the award-winning French animation production company, has appointed two new licensing agents to represent its flagship global children’s brand Oggy & the Cockroaches across multiple key territories. Brand Focus will lead the licensing programme in the UK, while 20tooLicensing will manage all licensing in the Middle East.

The two agents will represent Oggy & the Cockroaches across all consumer products categories and brand promotion.

Brand Focus and 20tooLicensing join Xilam’s global roster of licensing agents for Oggy & the Cockroaches including: Discovery Kids (Italy), IMC Licensing (Latin America), Active Merchandising (Germany); brand4rent (Russia), Empire Licensing (South-East Asia) and Dream Theatre (India).

The sixth and seventh seasons of Oggy & the Cockroaches are slated to premiere in 2017/2018.

In the UK, Oggy & the Cockroaches has been sold to Nickelodeon and Netflix, and in the Middle East broadcasters include: Cartoon Network Middle East, ejunior, Gulli Bil Arabi, Netflix, Amazon and Iciflix.

In addition, season 5 (78 x 7’) is airing internationally on a number of leading broadcasters in key territories including Gulli in France which launched the brand new season this month. Additional broadcasters include Cartoon Network in Latin America, Asia and Africa, Disney Channel in Germany and K2 and Frisbee in Italy, among many others.

Since first airing in 1998, the series and its star Oggy the fat, blue cat has reached 160 countries and an estimated 600 million households.

Centum Books Celebrates Success With Nickelodeon Star JoJo Siwa

“JoJo is set to be one of the top children’s licences in the UK this year” says Centum Books Managing Director Fiona Macmillan!


Centum Books is celebrating a storming performance in the UK children’s book chart thanks to its latest title with JoJo Siwa.

For the fourth consecutive week, the JoJo Siwa Be You Journal has maintained a top ten position, making it the top selling licensed character book in the UK.

Fiona Macmillan, MD of Centum Books, said: “We are really pleased with the launch of our official JoJo Siwa Journal which has mirrored the hype surrounding JoJo at present.

“The sales across all channels have seen amazing results with a further three re-prints already sold out. We are also extending the JoJo publishing programme with further products including a Gift Set, Sticker and Annual due to be launched very soon.”

The JoJo Tin of Bows and Mega Sticker Book launched on Sunday 1st October 2017, with the Annual due to be released on Wednesday 1st November, with new formats coming early next year.

Danilo will also be releasing the JoJo Siwa Official 2018 Calendar on Tuesday 2nd October 2017.

JoJo Siwa is set to perform “Boomerang” and two new songs live for the very first time in the UK exclusively at Nickelodeon's sold out SLIMEFEST 2017 this October half-term, taking place at The Arena, Blackpool Pleasure Beach from October 21-23. A 60-minute special featuring all the slime, music and mayhem from SLIMEFEST will air on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland on Friday 3rd November 2017. eOne Honours Peppa Pig Licensees At 2017 Peppa Pig Partner Day

Entertainment One (eOne) has honoured a number of its licensees at its annual Peppa Pig Partner Day!


Held on Friday 20th September 2017 at Picturehouse Central in London, the event saw the eOne team present updates on the preschool hit, as well as upcoming opportunities.

Six licensees were then presented with oink-tastic awards, marking their achievements over the course of the last 12 months.

The winners were:

- Most Innovative Product – Little Treats Bakery
- Range of the Year – HTI
- Most Collaborative Licensee – Blues Clothing
- Licensee of the Year – Character Options
- Outstanding Contribution – Paulton’s Park (home of Peppa Pig World)
- Lifetime Achievement – Penguin Random House


Peppa Pig continues to be a powerhouse for eOne, with total retail sales of US$1.2 billion in fiscal 2017 (up from US$1.1 billion in 2016) and licensing and merchandising revenue of US$59.3 million.

SpongeBob SquarePants places the characters of the hit Nickelodeon cartoon series in an original story set in Bikini Bottom, where the stakes are higher than ever before, as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world! Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage!


The show features a book by Kyle Jarrow and a score arranged by Tom Kitt, featuring original songs from a plethora of recording artists, including Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Panic! At the Disco, and the late David Bowie.

Reprising their roles from the musical’s 2016 world premiere in Chicago are Ethan Slater as SpongeBob, Gavin Lee as Squidward Q. Tentacles, Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, and Danny Skinner as Patrick Star. They will be joined by stage and TV favorite Wesley Taylor as the maniacal-yet-microscopic Sheldon Plankton and Brian Ray Norris in his Broadway debut as Krusty Krab owner Eugene Krabs.


Rounding out the cast are ensemble members Gaelen Gilliland, Juliane Godfrey, Kyle Matthew Hamilton, Curtis Holbrook, Stephanie Hsu, Jesse JP Johnson, L’ogan J’ones, Jai’len Josey, Kelvin Moon Loh, Lauralyn McClelland, Vasthy Mompoint, Oneika Phillips, Jon Rua, JC Schuster, Abby C. Smith, Robert Taylor Jr., Allan Washington, Brynn Williams, and Matt Wood.

Acclaimed Steppenwolf director Tina Landau and the groundbreaking designers behind Fun Home, Hedwig, and Spring Awakening have brilliantly reimagined Bikini Bottom for the Broadway stage, bringing the spirit of SpongeBob to life with humanity, heart, and pure theatricality. With an original score from some of the biggest names in pop and rock, SpongeBob SquarePants explodes with energy.


The Tina Landau-helmed production begins previews on Monday, November 6th at the Palace Theatre on New York City's prestigious Broadway, before officially opening on Monday, December 4th.
