Nickelodeon Asia To Premiere It's Brand New Locally Animated Series "Akis" In Malaysia

From TBI Vision:
Nickelodeon launches local series in Malaysia

International kids channel Nickelodeon is to launch Akis, its first local production in Malaysia.

The Viacom-owned broadcaster has commissioned the twelve-part series from Malaysian digital animation production company Inspidea. It follows the success of original Malaysian production Cingkus Blues, which the network acquired earlier this year.

Akis the tells the story of an imaginative seven year old girl with a sugary sweet voice. It has been produced in both English and Malaysian.

"Nickelodeon is always keen to develop engaging content and Akis' antics are both endearing and hilarious, something children are bound to connect with. This is the first time Nickelodeon has commissioned a studio in Malaysia to produce animated content and we are really pleased with what Inspidea has achieved. Akis is a great example of the top-notch content being produced in Malaysia," said Syahrizan Mansor, senior director, Nickelodeon Programming and Creative, Asia.
Also, from Kidscreen:
Nick to bow first Malaysian animation commission

Furthering its plans to localize content from Asia, Nickelodeon’s new 12 x two-minute animated kids series Akis will debut for Malaysian viewers on September 28.

Created and produced by Malaysia’s digital animation studio Inspidea, Akis is Nickelodeon’s first Malaysian animation commission.

The series, which highlights aspects of Malaysian culture and features English and Bahasa Malaysia audio, encourages imaginative play in kids and follows the adventures of a seven year-old girl who loves to play-pretend.

The new series follows the February Nick debut of another original Malaysian production Cingkus Blues, about a cat and a rat who are best friends.

From C21Media:
KidsCo, Nick pick up Asian toons

Global children’s channels KidsCo and Nickelodeon have placed their faith in a pair of cartoons created in Asia.

The deals represent a growing interest in IP created in the region, which is moving toward owning content rather than only acting as a service industry for toons created in the West.

KidsCo has acquired Shelldon (26x22′), a marine-themed toon that comes from Thailand’s Shellhut Entertainment, and will dub it for all local territories. It will debut in November.

The series is one of the best-known cartoons from Thailand, having first hit the international market at Mipcom four years ago, at the time via Entertainment Rights.

KidsCo scored its deal directly through Shellhut’s CEO Dr Jirayuth Chusanachoti, though Hit Entertainment was selling the show as recently as February last year.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Inspidea, another Asian toon house that’s driving the trend for locally created intellectual property, is working on a 12x2′ shortform series for Nick.

Akis will tell the stories of an imaginative a young girl that loves to play-pretend, in both English and Bahasa Malaysian. “Although the show is set in Malaysia, viewers everywhere will relate to Akis because of the similarities in their experiences,” said Inspidea’s CEO Andrew Ooi.

It's a second original Malaysian series this year for Nick, which debuted Cingkus Blues, a series about a best friend combo cat and rat combo, in February.

Nickelodeon Issues Apology For Jason Biggs' "Vulgar" Tweets

UPDATE (Thursday 15th November 2012): You can find a newer news article about the story covered in this blog post below.

From the Daily Mail:
* Nickelodeon apologises for Jason Biggs' 'vulgar' tweets about wives of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan during RNC

* Star of American Pie franchise tweeted a series of crude statements about Ann Romney and Janna Ryan during the Republican National Convention

* Forced to take them down after public outcry and realization that Nickelodeon site promoting new series was linking to him

Nickelodeon issued statement apologizing for Biggs' behaviour

Though no stranger to crude humour, several tweets by American Pie star Jason Biggs have gotten him in hot water.

During last week’s Republican National Convention, he made several extremely vulgar tweets about the wives of presidential candidate Mitt Romney and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, causing an outcry on the microblogging site.

And because Biggs now works for children’s entertainment network Nickelodeon as the voice of Leonardo in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, the company was forced to issue an apology.

Cowabunga: Jason Biggs, pictured with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Leonard, and his new employer Nickelodeon have been forced to apologise after Biggs tweeted a series of 'vulgar' things about the RNC

During last week’s RNC, Biggs was one of millions of Americans watching Mitt and Ann Romney take the stage. But unlike those millions, he tweeted a series of extremely vulgar things about the candidates’ wives.

MailOnline has chosen to not publish images of the tweets, which have since been deleted from Biggs’ account.

The official publicity Twitter account to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mentioned Biggs’ account on September 1, encouraging followers to visit his site.

Mediate reports that Fox News host Megyn Kelly picked up on his shocking comments, and was appalled by the actor’s tweets. She called him a ‘disgusting pig’ on the air.

Parental groups and conservatives then took to the warpath, calling for Biggs to be fired from his spot on the upcoming Nickelodeon television series.

On Wednesday, Nickelodeon issued a statement on the drama, saying: ‘The offensive comments made by Jason Biggs last week on his personal twitter account do not reflect our company’s views or values, and we condemn them.

Inappropriate: Biggs was forced to take the vulgar tweets about Ann Romney, left, and Janna Ryan, right, down from his Twitter site, which was linked to the TNMT promotional Twitter feed

Bye bye American Pie: Biggs is perhaps most famous for his roles in the crude American Pie comedy franchaise

‘Nickelodeon does not support or condone the use of graphic or vulgar language on any of our platforms. It was our mistake to link from our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles twitter feed to Jason’s personal twitter account, and we quickly corrected our error.

‘We also insisted Jason use better judgment and discretion in public communications while affiliated with our brand.’

But that apology wasn’t good enough for Kelly, who said on air after the statement was released: ‘Does that do it? It’s not like he made one comment that he can dial back.’

Parent’s groups have since been lobbying for advertisers on the show to pull their support.

A similar issue popped up last year after parent’s groups took a target on another Viacom-owned station, MTV.

The station that once was a haven for music videos adapted an American version of the racy U.K. series Skins. Several major advertisers pulled out after the show was lambasted for its racy content.

*Nick News art available at www.nickpress.com; screeners available upon request

NEW YORK, SEPT. 10, 2012 – Nickelodeon is hitting the campaign trail this fall with Nick News with Linda Ellerbee and its Kids Pick the President initiative, offering election-themed educational content on-air and online -- all leading up to its renowned week-long kids' vote on Oct. 15. The initiative begins with the first of two Nick News specials, "Kids Pick the President: The Issues" on Monday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), followed by “Kids Pick the President: The Candidates” on Monday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Immediately following the Oct. 15 "The Candidates" special, kids will have the opportunity to cast their vote for who they think should be the next president at www.nick.com/kpp. Throughout the history of Kids Pick the President, kids have correctly chosen the next U.S. president five out of six presidential elections. The winner of the Kids Pick the President vote will be announced Oct. 22 on Nickelodeon.

"Through Kids Pick the President, Nickelodeon continues to connect kids to the electoral process -- the candidates and issues that are most important to them," said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs, Chief of Staff for Nickelodeon Group. “Although not legal voters, kids aren't just on the sidelines; they have opinions which deserve to be heard and have a great influence on their parents.”

A series of new spots featuring kids along with Nickelodeon stars will roll out on TeenNick at the end of September. The "TeenNick's Make It Count" spots, hosted by Nick Cannon, will focus on the power of voting and the importance of civic engagement. New educational spots with kids discussing the candidates and the electoral process will roll out Oct. 7 on Nickelodeon.

In "Kids Pick the President: The Issues," kids across the country went online to rank the campaign issues most important to them, choosing from same-sex marriage, education, healthcare, taxes, immigration, Iran, energy and jobs. In "Kids Pick the President: The Candidates," Nick News will take kids' questions to the presidential candidates — who will answer the questions. Kids will then be encouraged to go online to www.nick.com/kpp and vote for the next U.S. president. More than two million kids' votes were cast online for the last election.

Kids can visit Nick.com to interact and learn more about the upcoming election. They can also play games, take quizzes about the government, learn about each candidate, and the issues.

Kids Pick the President is also incorporated into Nickelodeon's The Big Help initiative where kids are given tools and information to take action on issues important to them. For more information, go to www.thebighelp.com.

A real debate and a virtual election

[...]

— While the candidates debate, the results are now in on "Kids Pick the President," an installment of "Nick News With Linda Ellerbee" (8 on Nickelodeon).

"Kids Pick" parallels the straw votes that take place in classrooms throughout the country. While these votes don't count, of course, they can be telling. I remember when my high school straw vote came within 0.1 point of predicting the actual outcome in a presidential election. But that was a long time ago!

The "Kids Pick" winner has gone on to win in five out of the past six elections. In 2000, the "Kids Pick" was Al Gore, who went on to win the popular vote but was denied victory. There is no Electoral College in the "Kids Pick" contest.
