Jill Sobule, 'Harriet the Spy', 'Unfabulous' Singer-Songwriter, Passes Away Aged 66

Groundbreaking singer-songwriter Jill Sobule sadly died on Thursday, May 1 at the age of 66. Her death was announced by her spokesman, David Elkin, who said she died in a house fire in the Minneapolis suburb of Woodbury. Sobule had been on tour and was scheduled to play a hometown concert Friday night in Denver.

Sobule, beloved among the songwriter community and known for her political activism, broke through in the ’90s with songs like “I Kissed a Girl” and “Supermodel.” The former was the first openly gay song to crack the top 20 on the Billboard charts, the latter was featured in the 1995 film Clueless. Sobule had also worked with Nickelodeon over the years, including contributing the song "The Secretive Life" to the Harriet the Spy soundtrack and penning songs for Nickelodeon's mid-2000's comedy series, Unfabulous, for which she also sung the show's theme song.

Michelle Trachtenberg, 'Harriet the Spy', 'The Adventures of Pete & Pete' Actor, Passes Away Aged 39

Michelle Trachtenberg, the actor best known for film and television roles including Harriet the Spy, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has sadly passed away. She was 39.

She was found unconscious and unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment on Wednesday, February 26, according to the New York City police department. According to the New York Post, which first reported the news, she had recently undergone a liver transplant. Trachtenberg’s cause of death has not been confirmed, but the NYPD said criminality was not suspected.

In a statement, NYPD said that officers responded to a 911 call just after 8 a.m. and Trachtenberg was pronounced dead by emergency medical workers, who also responded to the scene.

“It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,” her publicist Gary Mantoosh said in a statement. “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”

Born in New York on October. 11, 1985, Trachtenberg began acting at a young age. She was 3 years old when she began appearing in commercials and soon after landed her first TV credit, as Nona F. Mecklenberg, the daughter of Iggy Pop's James "Pop" Mecklenberg character, on the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete, which aired in the mid 1990s. By age 10, she scored her first starring film role in 1996’s Harriet the Spy, in which she played the eponymous aspiring sleuth opposite Rosie O’Donnell and J. Smith-Cameron. The movie served as Nickelodeon Movies' first feature film,

Trachtenberg went on to play Dawn Summers on the teen drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran on the WB in the early aughts. Trachtenberg joined the popular show in its fifth season as the younger sister of Sarah Michelle Geller’s Buffy Summers and remained on the series through its seventh and final season in 2003.

She found further success on another teen drama, portraying the agent of chaos known as Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl, which ran from 2007 to 2012. Trachtenberg’s character, a diabolical Manhattan socialite, regularly found herself feuding, or blackmailing, with Blake Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen and Leighton Meester’s Blair Waldorf. She briefly reprised her role on HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot in 2022.

Trachtenberg has a long list of genre-spanning credits on the big and small screen. Her film roles include 2004’s Eurotrip, the raunchy teen comedy that popularized the fictional song “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” and 2005’s Ice Princess, a comparatively wholesome film about a nerdy high schooler with a passion for figure skating. She also starred in 2009’s 17 Again with Zac Efron and Matthew Perry as well as episodes of TV shows such as Clarissa Explains It All, Law & Order, All My Children, Six Feet Under and Weeds.

In 2021, Trachtenberg spoke out in support of her fellow Buffy actor Charisma Carpenter who alleged the series creator Joss Whedon subjected Carpenter to “inappropriate and cruel behavior on set.” Trachtenberg reposted a statement from Geller with the caption, “I am brave enough now as a 35-year-old woman to repost this. Because this must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior. Very. Not. Appropriate. There was a rule. Saying. He’s not allowed in a room alone with Michelle again.” Whedon has denied the allegations.

Update (4/17): Michelle Trachtenberg died a natural death from complications caused by diabetes, according to the New York City medical examiner's office.

The 39-year-old actress was found "unconscious and unresponsive" in her New York City apartment in February.

Officials did not perform a post-mortem examination, but said toxicology tests determined Trachtenberg's cause of death.

Trachtenberg's family, who are Orthodox Jews, had reportedly objected to an autopsy, citing religious reasons.

Because there was no sign of foul play, the medical examiner did not overrule the relatives' objection.

Following the news of Trachtenberg's death, the actor's Harriet the Spy costar, Rosie O'Donnell said in a statement that hearing what happened was "heartbreaking."

"I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped," she added.

Michelle's The Adventures of Pete & Pete co-star Daniel Tamberelli (Little Pete) also paid tribute to the late actor on Instagram.

Captioning a photo of their time on the Nickelodeon show, Danny said: "We grew up learning how to make people laugh together. More importantly, we learned to make each other laugh and pull pranks on everyone. We were doing improv when it was still called playing pretend to get laughs. She was a master of the clothespin game, tagging any and everyone she could. She once got upset when I got my 1st bass on set because I wouldn’t hang out during lunch. She hid the cable so I couldn’t play through the amp. I got the message. She was a bright light, firecracker and caring person who spent a lot of time and effort advocating for people who needed a louder voice. Michelle was someone to look up to in this business and to the general world at large. She will be missed. All my love, sympathy and compassion to Lana, Irene and the rest of her family and friends."

Another cast mate, J. Smith-Cameron spoke out in a statement on Feb. 26. "I played Mrs. Welch, Harriet’s mother in Harriet the Spy. Michelle had been on a Nickelodeon show called Adventures of Pete & Pete but this seemed to be her first lead film role. She was so excited," she recalled.

"Her natural ebullient nature was ratcheted up into giddiness as she tried to learn how to handle all that came with that. She was a very charming little girl," the actress continued. "Years later we found each other on social media and connected briefly. She was always very warm toward me. I feel very shocked and unsettled to hear of her passing."

Kenan Thompson also reflected on his bond with the fallen star. The Saturday Night Live star paid tribute to his fellow Nickelodeon alum on Instagram.  

“Our first Nick movie star has departed us!!” Kenan captioned the touching post, which features a throwback video from the 1999 Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards. In the video, Michelle acts as a wrestling commentator during the All That star’s fight against the late Randy “Macho Man” Savage. “She was my friend and now she rests!! Check on your people!!!” 

Kenan also shared a sweet photo of him posed with the late actor in the early days of their career. The two got their start on Nickelodeon in the late ‘90s, 

The actor's final Instagram post was seven days ago, where she shared a throwback of herself wanting to "look like naughty #tinkerbell."

Michelle's ex-boyfriend, Animorphs alum Shawn Ashmore, whom she dated between 2004 and 2006, penned a tribute on social media. 

"Incredibly sad to hear about Michelle’s passing," he wrote. "She was an incredible person and I will always remember the years we spent together fondly. She was loving, quirky and would never pass up a law and order SVU marathon:)"

He added, "My condolences to her mother Lana and sister Irene! This is an incredible loss!"

Smith-Cameron, her co-star on Harriet the Spy, once described a preteen Trachtenberg as “this very appealing, bubbly, very beautiful child star from Nickelodeon.”

“It was like everything was taking off for her. But she was sweet about it,” Smith-Cameron told Vulture in a 2021 interview about filming the kid-friendly movie. “I just remember her taking it very seriously. A true professional.”

with Michelle leaving a memorable impression on two of the network’s original projects: 1993’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete and 1996’s Harriet the Spy. Michelle later branched out to other shows in the early 2000s, snagging titular roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 

Following the tragic news of Michelle's untimely passing, many of the people she had worked with over the years paid tribute to the late actor:

"Michelle was one of a kind," said fellow Gossip Girl alum Chace Crawford. "I remember her coming on set for the first time and just absolutely owning it. She was a force of nature and just so so unapologetically funny and magnetic.. remembering those years with a big smile. Just a terrible loss. Love you."

"My heart is heavy today," Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor James Marsters wrote on Instagram. "We have lost a beautiful soul. Michelle was fiercely intelligent, howlingly funny, and a very talented person. She died much too young, and leaves behind scores of people who knew and loved her."

James continued, "My heart goes out to her family who are good people, and are suffering the greatest loss anyone could bear. I hope everyone can give them space to heal in this most difficult time. Godspeed Michelle. You are missed."

Sex and the City alum Kim Cattrall wrote of her Ice Princess costar, "Rest in peace sweet Michelle."

"I'm so sorry your bright light died so young," Emma Caulfield wrote of her former costar. "Our Buffy family lost a little sister today... Rest in peace lovely Mish Mish. You were loved."

Halloweentown alum Kimberly J. Brown expressed her grief with a simple broken heart emoji. 

"I'm heartbroken to hear of the passing of @michelletrachtenberg," Nickelodeon alum Melissa Joan Hart wrote on Instagram, alognside a throwback clip from Clarissa Explains It All. "So young, so talented and so sweet! Here is a fun scene from when she was on #ClarissaExplainsItAll. I think this was about 1992 and the episode was an idea I had about babysitting a total nightmare. But Michelle was nothing like her character and even this young, we got along wonderfully. #gonetoosoon #RIP #GodBlesstheFunnyPeople".

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Michelle’s passing," Gossip Girl creators and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage shared with NBC News. "Michelle was so funny, kind, and talented. Her portrayal of Georgina Sparks was an iconic fan favorite, and grew from a one season villain to a beloved character who returned over the course of six seasons."

The pair continued, "She was a delight to have on set and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with her family.” 

"Oh Michy…," Melissa Gilbert wrote on Instagram in tribute to her A Holiday for Love costar. "And we lived so close to one another…..my heart aches for your family and all those who loved you so… @michelletrachtenberg #ripsweetgirl"

"So sad to hear of the passing of @michelletrachtenberg," Gossip Girl alum Ed Westick wrote on his Feb. 25 Instagram Story. "Sending prayers."

He closed his message with the praying hands and white heart emojis. 

"So very sad..." Michelle's Buffy The Vampire Slayer costar David Boreanaz wrote on social media of her passing. "Horrible News. RIP and prayers to her and her family."

Gossip Girl alum Kevin Zegers—who played Damien Dalgaard in the teen drama—described Michelle's passing a "loss."

"Michelle was tough and a force," he added in his Instagram post. "Just a kid, so sad."

Gossip Girl alum Blake Lively also joined in the ongoing tributes for her co-star Michelle Trachtenberg.

Lively posted a lengthy statement to her Instagram Story in remembrance of the actor, who played Georgina Sparks alongside Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen on the late 2000s CW teen soap.

“This is the first day I met Michelle,” Lively captioned a still of them in Gossip Girl. “She was electricity. You knew when she entered a room because the vibration changed. Everything she did, she did 200%. She laughed the fullest at someone’s joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself.”

Lively’s statement continued, “Time passes. You take for granted that you get the chance to see an old friend. To paraphrase, the real tragedies in life are the ones that blindside you on an idle Tuesday.”

The first feature film from the Nickelodeon, Harriet the Spy is an updated version of Louise Fitzhugh's best-selling 1964 children's novel.

Sixth grade outcast Harriet (Michelle Trachtenberg, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) is an only child who has mostly been raised by her nanny, Golly (Rosie O'Donnell, Kids' Choice Awards, Sleepless In Seattle, A League of Their Own), rather than her materialistic parents.

Harriet wants to be a writer when she grows up, and only Golly encourages her creative pursuits. Meanwhile, Harriet dons a yellow raincoat and a belt full of gadgets to spy on everyone around her, including her eccentric neighbor with a lot of cats and the other kids at school.

Carefully taking notes in her private notebook, Harriet makes clever and cruel observations about her subjects, including her best friends, would-be scientist Janie (Vanessa Lee Chester) and overburdened Sport (Gregory Smith).

Harriet's world begins to change when Golly leaves, signaling that it is time for her to grow up. Then a snobby girl a school, Marion, gets her hands on Harriet's special notebook and makes its contents known to the whole school. Soon everyone is against Harriet, and she must concoct a plan to get even.

J. Smith-Cameron Answers Every Question We Have About Harriet the Spy

In the small but mighty subgroup of “films featuring misfit preteen girls whose precociousness frequently leads to trouble,” there is Little Women, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, Matilda, and, for the Nickelodeon generation specifically, Harriet the Spy, a genre-defying movie (is it comedy? a drama? a spy caper?) that put then-10-year-old Michelle Trachtenberg on the map, showcased ’90s New York in all its rose-colored glory, and introduced a world of viewers to the joys of tomato-and-mayo sandwiches. When Harriet, based on a 1964 Louise Fitzhugh novel of the same name, was released in 1996, it was a moderate success at the box office, earning a total of $26 million on a $12 million budget. VHS consumers will remember the orange-clamshell release featuring two Rugrats episodes (the pilot of Hey Arnold! was shown ahead of the movie in theaters), a relic of its home viewing popularity. Critics, though, were less effusive, with most praising Trachtenberg and co-star Rosie O’Donnell’s performances but criticizing its slow pacing and lack of a real plot (harsh, but fair).

Twenty-five years after the movie hit theaters, we called up J. Smith-Cameron, the veteran actress (and current Succession star) who played Violetta Welsch, Harriet’s mother, to parse through the story they ended up filming and everything that happened behind the scenes, too. Cameron spoke to Vulture — a day before leaving for Italy to film scenes for the HBO hit later documented on her Instagram (and in the pages of New York Magazine) — about impressing O’Donnell with her Broadway bona fides, hanging out with Courtney B. Vance in Toronto, and the enduring brilliance of the Harriet costume design.

What do you remember from your audition?

So the first screenplay was written by Theresa Rebek, who I really admired a lot, and I think she then was replaced and it was rewrittenDouglas Petrie co-wrote the script. between the time I auditioned and got there. So when I first read my audition scenes, Mrs. Welch was sort of stuck up, and she talked to Harriet like an adult. She was kind of arch. And I thought I gave a very funny audition doing that, not pulling the punches of that.

Then when I got the script, it was all different and she was much more warm and fuzzy. And Harriet was spunky but not — you know how in the book, Harriet is an oddball? She’s like Lynda Barry or Fran Lebowitz in child form. And Rosie O’Donnell’s Golly is also a very, very specific character in the book. They’re all oddballs in the book. And this was sort of like a brighter, sunnier [version]. So it was a bit schizophrenic for me in my mind because I had gotten the part reading some version in between the book and what it ended up as.

But when I saw the movie, I was very proud of it. I thought it was really great and really charming and had a really fresh look … yet it was slightly confusing because it didn’t quite feel like the book. It had its own little universe that was very true to itself, and very fresh and funny and sweet, but just a different tone. I have a real fondness for it, and it was a really magical time.

It sounds like you were a big fan of the book originally.

Yes, I was. There’s a lot about the book that just immediately gets your attention when you read it. It almost doesn’t read like a children’s book. You know what I mean? It’s not a child’s world, exactly. It’s kind of droll … Harriet’s very snarky, but it came out of her being precocious and an only child. In New York, children are sort of sophisticated in a way, and yet there’s something provincial about them because they can’t go anywhere and be wowed by any place they visit because they’ve already been in New York. And as someone who didn’t grow up in New York, I remember marveling at it, that a kid could be that blunt or that frank on her own.

How did the adaptation’s change in tone feel to you, once you saw the movie?

I almost think of it as two separate things. There’s the novel I loved, and the characters I loved from the novel, and then our movie, which I also loved, but was not Harriet the Spy, exactly. So I feel like it was a charming movie, but in my mind, it’s very different from the book. But both things can exist. And in a way, you’d almost rather that. If you really loved the book, it’s almost like, don’t try to be the book. Do your own thing. And that’s sort of what they did.

I read that the movie was filmed in Toronto, despite being a classic New York story. 

It’s such a New York story! I still feel that there may be another version of Harriet the Spy that’s really shot in New York. Because it’s such a classic, it could be done again and again.

I remember that we stayed in this cool hotel in Toronto. There were people I knew from another cast, maybe two other casts, in the hotel, too. I remember Courtney VanceVance appeared in The Preacher’s Wife the same year that Harriet was in theaters. was there — I had gone way back with Courtney, I had known him in my early 20s — and I remember hanging out with him a little bit in the hotel. It was just a very festive, jolly time. And I remember being very impressed by all the local Canadian actors. They had all these really crème de la crème character actors who were CanadianThe adult Canadian actors included Sally Cahill as a maid, Jackie Richardson as Janie’s mother, and Robert Joy as Harriet’s father. in Harriet, all of whom were, I thought, wonderful.

Most of your scenes in the film were with Michelle Trachtenberg, who was only 10 when she started filming but was already a child star thanks to The Adventures of Pete & Pete. What was it like working with her? 

She was this very appealing, bubbly, very beautiful child star from Nickelodeon. And she was feeling her oats, but not in an obnoxious way. It was like everything was taking off for her. But she was sweet about it. And I just remember her taking it very seriously. A true professional. She and I kind of rediscovered each other on Twitter a few years ago. She was so sweet and bubbly in the messages, again.

Harriet the Spy came out in 1996, the same year as The Rosie O’Donnell Show debuted. How was having Rosie as a co-star?

Golly [in the movie] was completely different from the character in the book, but Rosie was so game and very natural and ebullient in the part. Even though it was very different, I thought it worked. It was the first time I got to know Rosie, and I remember that she had seen me in plays,Smith-Cameron made her Broadway debut in 1982 in Crimes of the Heart. She has appeared in many Broadway and Off Broadway plays since then. and she was very enthusiastic about working with me. And then at one point in the makeup trailer, I remember her telling me that she thought I looked like Patti LuPone, which I’d never heard before, so I was kind of thrilled by it. She was just very warm and friendly.

And then the next year after it came out, I think in ’97 or ’98, I was in this play called As Bees in Honey Drown, and it was kind of a big hit Off Broadway, and I had this real tour-de-force part.Smith-Cameron played Alexa, a con artist, in a role that earned her an Obie Award, a Drama Desk nomination, and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. And I remember on [O’Donnell’s] talk show, her talking about it and saying, “Oh my friend J. Smith-Cameron is fantastic in that play, what did you think of it?” And she’s talking to Russell Crowe, and it wasn’t his kind of play. But he did say he thought I was worth the price of admission.

You have a great scene with Rosie early on, when Mrs. Welsch tells her she’s been fired after taking Harriet out into the city without her parents’ knowledge.

Oh, gosh. I wish I remembered it better. I do remember it was very cold and I was in an evening gown. That was great.

Do you still keep in touch with Rosie at all? 

I do, because Rosie’s so political, too, and so outspoken. I had contacted her to be part of some marches and stuff like that. So we kind of stayed in touch on social media, basically. Because no one was really in touch in real life for a while.

You also had a great dynamic with Robert Joy, who played Harriet’s dad, Ben Welsch.

I’d known but never worked with him, and he’s sort of a legend in the New York theater world and the film world. I kind of looked up to him … he’s like a star in my mind, this really unique, cool actor.

I remember a scene with Bob and Michelle where we’re kind of dealing with her, and we had this repartee, and I had such joy working with Bob and this charming kid. I think Bob and I both felt a little bit like we were straddling the book characters and the way the whole movie was kind of conceived. I felt like we were both trying to be a little bit buttoned-up and starchy, and I thought that worked out okay.

One of my favorite things about Harriet is that she’s the rare young female character who’s not nice — in fact, she’s kind of an asshole, sometimes. She alienates her friends and writes such mean things about them.

Totally. She’s a beyotch. She really is. She’s sort of a little monster. She’s sort of grouchy, and you can infer that she’s got a whole “this is a sophisticated kid that’s younger than her inner life” thing. She’s still gotta work out things. She’s assumed a sophistication and maturity that she doesn’t have yet. And that’s such a New York-y thing, you know?

The movie had a female director, Bronwen Hughes,Harriett was Hughe’s directorial debut, which she followed up with Forces of Nature. which was a pretty big deal for the time, and still is. 

It was really exciting to have a female director, so I really appreciated that. Bronwen was like Puck or something. She was just like the Pied Piper, energetic. She was the perfect person to direct that movie. Very much her own person and very creative and authentic and full of life.

I read an interview with Vanessa Lee Chester, who played Harriet’s friend Janie, where she said she remembered the director always dancing and playing music on set to keep the kids energized. What was it like working with so many child actors?

I like working with kids, and I’ve played a mom so much in my career that that happens a lot. And showbiz kids are usually a little different than other kids, but those kids were the nicest version of that, if you can read between the lines there. I thought all the kid performers were fantastic.

On a different note, when I rewatched the movie, I realized that the clothes, by costume designer Donna Zakowska, are fantastic. Those ’90s sweaters!

I remember being so impressed with her, and I thought that she dressed us so particularly. I had satin suits that felt like they were almost a callback to the original era the book is written in, and other things that were very of the moment, so she was kind of bridging the book and the flavor of the movie, which had a different world to it.

And then I was at the premiere for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, back whenever that was — the last few years, I don’t know about you, but I could not tell you the time when it was — I remember seeing [Zakowska] and being so knocked out watching the clothes in Maisel. And when I saw it was the lady from Harriet the Spy who’d done the clothes, I was like, that makes sense.

Okay, we need to talk about those tomato sandwiches.

The tomato sandwiches! Listen, I’ll have you know that I bought a tomato from a farm stand driving into the Hamptons yesterday, and I went, “I’m gonna have a Harriet the Spy tomato sandwich.”

With mayo?

Yeah! I mean, it’s hilarious. But I was the odd kid who liked tomato sandwiches when I was little, too.
