Peppa Pig Builds Momentum in Japan

Entertainment One (eOne) is building on the growing fanbase of Peppa Pig in Japan, with 26 new episodes now airing weekly on TV Tokyo. The animated series first aired on the Japanese broadcaster in October 2017, and has quickly become a ratings hit with pre-school audiences.

The broadcast line-up has been further bolstered by additional platforms including Disney Japan, Hulu Japan and Netflix which have the rights to the series and have expanded the show’s availability throughout the region.

eOne is accelerating the brand’s licensing drive in the market led by master licensee SEGA TOYS CO.LTD. Consumer products from 20 local licensees debuted in March 2018 via an exclusive Peppa Pig pop-up shop in the Takashimaya department store in Tokyo which was attended by the British Ambassador.

Less than a year later, the licensing and merchandising (L&M) programme now boasts 33 licensing partners as the brand’s popularity has soared in the region, with more exciting retail partnerships planned in 2019. Sales of Peppa Pig DVDs have reached 10,000 copies with a new release set to launch in April 2019 and product is now available in all 170 Toys R Us stores throughout Japan.

Business is set to grow throughout 2019 as new retailers come on board to create Peppa Pig themed retail destinations. At the end of this month, Peppa will play a role in the launch of Japan’s first Hamley’s toy store with costume character in-store appearances, significant cross-category product display and special themed activities and photo opportunities on the day.

Olivier Dumont, the president of eOne Family & Brands, commented: “We’re continuing to grow the footprint of Peppa Pig in Asia, where the property has seen incredible success in the past 12 months. The increased broadcast exposure will help fuel demand for consumer products as we continue to expand the licensing programme and develop experiential retail activations that will give fans in Japan more opportunities to interact with their favourite character.”

Peppa Pig airs on Nick Jr. and Viacom’s Channel 5 Milkshake in the U.K., and on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels globally.

Peppa Pig is created by Neville Astley and Mark Baker and produced by Astley Baker Davies Ltd and Entertainment One (eOne). The animated preschool show is one of eOne’s key properties. Last year it announced that 117 new episodes were entering production, which will start airing next year and take the total episode count to 381.

eOne Appoints Alpha Group As Master Toy Partner For 'Peppa Pig' in China

Entertainment One (eOne) has appointed Alpha Group as master toy partner for Peppa Pig in China.

Under the new deal, the firm will introduce an extensive new toy line in 2018 that will continue to fuel the brand’s accelerating growth in the market.

The licensing program for China now counts more than 45 partners and continues to expand, with apparel, publishing, digital and confectionery categories all reporting strong sales. In addition, three sets of Peppa Pig-branded and animated emojis have been downloaded more than 20 million times. Live events and immersive fan experiences are also a key priority for eOne in China. September 2018 will see the opening of Merlin Entertainments’ first Peppa Pig attraction in Shanghai. A new deal was signed with Happy Kids Cultural Development for a Peppa Pig stage show that will tour the country over the next three years. A number of branded pop-up and mall events are also in the pipeline.

eOne's hit television series made a strong broadcast debut in China in June 2015 on national broadcaster, CCTV and is now available on multiple leading VOD platforms including Youku, IQIYi and Tencent, where the series has accumulated over 45 billion cumulative views.

As one of China’s leading toy manufacturers, plans are underway for Alpha Group to launch a new core toy range including play-sets, figurines and role play which will debut in the fourth quarter of 2018. As part of its strategy, Alpha plans to offer multiple price points across the range to give consumers more choice and value for money.

To manage this rapid growth, eOne has expanded it local team in the company’s Hong Kong office and has recently appointed Jennifer Pang as licensing director, Leo Tsoi as Hardgoods Manager, Joyce Lauw as director of product development and Debra Ng as Vice President (VP) of marketing.

Andrew Carley, the Executive Vice President (EVP) of global licensing for eOne Family & Brands, commented, “Alpha’s leading position in the Chinese market, in addition to its industrial chain platform and diverse operational IP experience, will contribute greatly to the reach of Peppa Pig across a wider consumer spectrum and we’re delighted to have them on board.”

Kenny Cao, the Senior Vice President (SVP) at Alpha Group, said, “More and more families in China have fallen in love with Peppa Pig. Such collaboration will enable both parties to make the most of resources for a mutually beneficial partnership. Alpha also aspires to enhance its competitiveness in the family entertainment field.”

Carley continued, “The accelerating popularity of Peppa Pig in China is testament to the brand’s universal appeal and shows us what incredible growth is possible when the Chinese market gets behind a brand. As we gear up for the Year of the Pig in Chinese New Year 2019, we will be in a strong position with a new toy range, fresh content, exciting merchandise ranges and immersive experiences that will enable us to deepen our presence in what is a hugely important market for our global growth strategy.”

eOne’s proactive efforts to protect its IP from piracy are ongoing and in 2017 the licensor removed over 80,000 online marketplace listings across leading e-commerce platforms covering 5 continents, as well as seizing approximately 1.5 million physical goods globally. eOne and Alpha will continue to collaborate with Chinese authorities to carry out an extensive anti-counterfeiting programme to reduce and deter infringement of its brands.

Alpha Group, for its part, recently struck a deal with Nickelodeon to serve as master toy partner for SpongeBob SquarePants. The toyco’s upcoming line will include toys, collectibles, plush and novelties, and is set to debut in 2019. DHX Brands has also appointed Alpha Group as its global toy licensee, excluding Asia, for Massive Monster Mayhem, its action-packed sci-fi competition series that airs on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels worldwide.

eOne Celebrates Peppa Pig Success In China

Peppa Pig is becoming a big hit in China where sales of her toys, clothes and home furnishings, including Peppa Pig branded beds, sofas, and work desks, are on the up.

The cartoon pig's popularity in the country has been driven by nationwide showings of her TV programme and a strong social media presence.

Peppa has attracted 34 billion views on the different Chinese platforms since the brand launched in 2015.

The toy is also bringing in increased revenue in the US for Entertainment One (eOne), which owns the beloved preschool brand.

Peppa successfully hit the big screen this year, with Peppa Pig: My First Cinema Experience taking £3.6m in the UK and A$2.2m (£1.3m) in Australia and New Zealand.

The group, which also owns film business eOne and a television arm, said in a trading update on Wednesday that all divisions were performing as expected. However, box office revenues from films it distributes had nearly halved because of a lack of new releases.

Movies due to be released before the end of 2017, including Steven Spielberg-directed film The Post, Paddington 2 and A Bad Moms Christmas, should reverse that trend, EOne said.

Andrew Carley, head of global licensing at Entertainment One, told the BBC that the biggest selling item in China had been the traditional story books.

Since April 2016, they have sold 18 million copies and he said: "The numbers in China are unlike anything we've seen in any other territory.

"The sales have blossomed probably as a result of that need or want of parents to educate children in English."

The next country to welcome Peppa is set to be Japan, with Mr Carley adding that then the pig would be truly global.

Local touch

Analyst Tom Harrington, of Enders Analysis, said the character's success in China was "amazing".

He told the BBC: "China is a massive market but is very difficult for Western media companies to get into for two reasons.

"One is censorship, and the other is that you can't operate there without an alliance with a Chinese business.

"However, children's content is very transferable between cultures, especially animation which is very easy to dub over to make it look local."

He said the most popular TV shows in any country are always locally made. For example, only one foreign programme made it into the top 150 shows watched in the UK last year.

Shares in EOne fell 1.4% to 254.5p, valuing the company at £1.1bn, but the stock has risen more than a fifth over the past 12 months.

Peppa Pig is broadcast in 180 countries around the world, including on many Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels, in 40 different languages. The animated series follow the characters of Peppa and her family, including Daddy pig, Mummy Pig and her brother George.

eOne Unveils Broadcast And Licensing Plans For "Peppa Pig" In Japan

Entertainment One (eOne) continues to build on the success of Peppa Pig in Asia as the licensor has announced plans for the property in Japan. The multi award-winning animated show will be heading to TV screens in Japan when it debuts on TV Tokyo on Tuesday 10th October 2017, marking the latest rollout in the show’s push into Asia.

U.K.-listed eOne owns the property after acquiring a controlling stake in its producer Astley Baker Davis in 2015 for £140 million ($188 million). In Asia the show is on Nick Jr. and Viacom’s Voot SVOD platform, and in China on CCTV and several streaming platforms including iQIYI, and Youku.

eOne and its master licensee in the territory, SEGA Toys Co., is now readying the launch of a consumer products programme in Japan. The firm presented licensing opportunities to partners at a special brand presentation on Wednesday 27th September 2017, hosted by the British Ambassador to Japan at The British Embassy in Tokyo.

Publishing is poised to spearhead the licensing programme in early 2018 led by publishing partner, Froebel-kan, which will publish two titles in early spring 2018. From March 2018 a number of toys and games licensees will launch at selected retailers before expanding to mass distribution by the end of 2018. These include Hanayama, to distribute Character Options’ award-winning global master toy line, Bandai for wooden toys and puzzles, Sega Toys for standard plush and Meteor APAC, the sole distributor for Ty in Japan, to distribute Ty’s Beanie Babies® range. Joining these partners, Nippon Columbia will distribute DVD’s starting from 2018.

Andrew Carley, head of global licensing at eOne Family, commented: “Peppa Pig is enjoying tremendous ratings and retail success across Asia, so we’re incredibly excited to be bringing the brand to Japan. Asia is a key focus for our global licensing strategy so we’re keen to explore opportunities in this exciting new market and with top tier broadcast and licensing partners already on board, we have a strong foundation for future growth.”

Peppa Pig now airs throughout Asia with licensing and merchandise programmes established in India, Hong Kong, mainland China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan. The property launched in Vietnam and Mongolia in late 2017. Broadcast platforms include Viacom18's VOOT Kids and Nick Jr. India, as well as CCTV, iQiYi, Youku, Tencent and LeEco.

Peppa has become a huge brand for younger viewers and also generates hundreds of millions of dollars in licensing and merchandising revenue.

Canadian Broadcasters Acquire Rights To Nickelodeon's Brand New CG-Animated Preschool Series "Paw Patrol"; To Debut On Canada's TVOKids And Knowledge Network In September 2013

The entertainment industry news website C21Media is reporting the Nickelodeon International news that two Canadian broadcasters have picked up the broadcast rights to Nickelodeon's "Paw Patrol", a brand new CG-animated preschool series based on a concept by "Bob the Builder" creator Keith Chapman!

Following the world premiere of "Paw Patrol" on Nick USA on Monday 12th August 2013 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT), TVOKids, a daily children's programming block on TVOntario (TVO), Ontario's provincial educational television network, and British Columbia's Knowledge Network, a Canadian English language public educational cable television network in the province of British Columbia, will start to show episodes of "Paw Patrol" from Monday 2nd September 2013.

The series will also begin airing on Nickelodeon's international channels from Autumn/Fall 2013.

It is currently unknown whether Nickelodeon Canada and/or YTV will also start to air "Paw Patrol".

"Paw Patrol", a Nickelodeon co-production with Spin Master Entertainment, stars a pack of six heroic rescue pups – Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma and Skye - who are led by a tech-savvy boy named Ryder. Together they work hard to protect the Adventure Bay Community believing, "no job is too big, no pup is too small!" The series features a curriculum that focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem-solving:
Canada sniffs out Paw Patrol

Two Canadian broadcasters have picked up Nickelodeon’s forthcoming toon Paw Patrol, based on a concept by Bob the Builder creator Keith Chapman.

TVO Kids and Knowledge Network will begin airing the preschool toon on September 2.

Paw Patrol is the first solely owned property from Canadian toyco Spin Master’s prodco Spin Master Entertainment. The CGI animated toon has been coproduced with Guru Studio (Justin Time) and Nickelodeon.

The series, which follows a group of heroic puppies led by a tech-savvy 10-year-old, will debut on Nickelodeon in the US next month before airing on Nick’s international channels in the fall.

The series focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem-solving, Nick said.

The creation of Paw Patrol follows the demise of Chapman Entertainment, the prodco Chapman co-founded in 2002 and went into administration last year.

Nickelodeon has licensed the global (excluding Canada) distribution rights to Paw Patrol on behalf of Viacom International from Spin Master, as well as all ancillary exploitation rights, including licensing and merchandising.
