Among the many exciting panels planned for this year’s LightBox Expo in Pasadena, California next month is a special look a the beautiful art created for Paramount’s critically-acclaimed new feature Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which premiered on Paramount+ in late July. “The Art of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender” panel will take place 4-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 25 in the Civic Auditorium, and Animation Magazine has revealed that the discussion will be followed by a special screening of the movie as a thrilling conclusion to LBX.

Featuring art director Aaron Loftis, production designer Jake Panian and VFX supervisor Jerry Huynh, this inspiring hour will delve into the process for crafting the unique 2D/3D style for the movie, breaking down the visual pillars for the films art style, early explorations and paintings all the way through the production art and the cinematic compositing style of the movie.

Animation Magazine was fortunate enough to get a special exclusive sneak peek at the panel from the very talented Aaron Loftis, whose credits include My Dad the Bounty Hunter and Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans:

Animation Magazine: Congrats on delivering the beautiful Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie. We are very excited about your special LightBox panel. Can you tell us a bit more about what you’ll be unveiling at the event?

Aaron Loftis: We are very excited about our talk at LightBox, where our production designer Jake Panian and visual effects supervisor Jerry Huynh are going to be discussing the art of the movie. We will have whole section dedicated to early development of the art and the look of the movie. We’ll talk about how Jake worked with creators of the show Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino and director Lauren Montgomery to come up with what ended up with the final look of the film.

That is going to be transition into my section, which will be mainly geared toward how we implemented all of those findings and direction into actual production, focusing on how we put in place things that I did and how we worked with our team to get the actual visuals that we hoped to be on the screen.

Then, our VFX supervisor will talk about the massive compositing undertaking that they had to do where they had to take all of those rules and goals that we had for everything and put it all together at the very end like the bow on top.

So, the presentation will feature a nice range for people to see how things go when it’s just you and the director trying to swim around and find the answers to these questions, and how to get everyone to do it and how it all came together. A nice full circle from start to finish of how the team worked together to realize the visual goals for the movie.

Can you tell us about the visuals that you plan to share at your panel?

We have all these incredible early paintings that show the range of the visuals created for the movie. Our production designer Jake sat with the creators of the show and showed them something like 200 images early on. So, he has a really nice chronology of those images and how he got to the final versions for the movie. I think it’ll be cool for people to see the ones that didn’t make it as well as seeing just how granular we had to get as we went on to build this world. I think it will be interesting to learn about all the problems and challenges regarding the art and also about the story and how we had to be faithful to both the original shows.

Hopefully we will offer more insights as to the amount of work that went into this work, which audiences get to see only 85 minutes on the screen — but there are thousands of images that did or didn’t get used eventually.

Just looking back at the whole experience of working on this movie, what made it special for you?

In terms of the big animation landscape, seeing a 2D animated film being made at that scale and quality was very exciting to me, especially as someone who grew up during the Disney Renaissance of the ’90s and also is huge love or anime as well. After witnessing 30 years of CG animation, to see that this skill is still respected, loved and celebrated was really exciting.

This opportunity gave me everything and more than I could have ever hoped for because I got to work on something that people love and cherish. I didn’t even understand the full extent of how much people really love this show and franchise before. I’ll never be able to thank the people that gave me the opportunity enough; and how wonderful they were to give me space to grow and to make this amazing movie together.

I recall meeting Jake when I just 23 years old, and asked him to look at my work and hoped that one day I’ll be able to work in animation too. So, it was one of those opportunities that won’t come around again.

So, you mentioned meeting Jake who was one of your heroes. I’m sure many of your fans will be excited to meet you at LightBox. Can you talk about the importance of events like this for the community?

I think all of us work so hard, and we’re so used to creating on our own and feeling maybe … not necessarily isolated, but just very heads down, doing the thing that we love most. But when we’re all able to lift our heads up from our computers and go spend some time with all these amazing people that we looked up to — just enjoy being around, maybe commiserating and talking about the things that we all love together.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender - Animation Magazine exclusive production art [c/o Paramount]

LightBox is one of those events that are so special not only for the people that already work in animation, but also for people that are aspiring to do it to make those connections. I remember meeting our production designer Jake Panian more than a decade ago and then getting to work with him was very special.

I also recently got to do a talk at Disney about our movie, and it was a full circle moment for me. When I first came to L.A. 14 years ago for a convention, I had a picture taken of me in front of Disney Animation. So, I got to recreate that same photo as I had arrived at the other side of the kid’s dream. I wanted to be part of this community, and with all the hard work, it was nice that I was able to do that.

I am sure like everyone else working in animation, you have your own thoughts and perspectives about the future of the medium and new technologies.

As for the broader animation landscape, I am genuinely excited about where we are heading. Major studios are competing to elevate visuals and storytelling across the board in an “iron sharpens iron” kind of way. At the same time, an independent wave of animation projects is gaining real steam and support online. Seeing success thrive outside the traditional studio system is just as thrilling to me.

When it comes to AI and its impact on our work in animation, there are many unknowns. One positive takeaway is how aligned the artist community is against generative AI and its implementation in our work. I can only control what is directly in front of me, so on the projects I lead and contribute to, I am doing my part to make sure my stance against using it is known.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender - Animation Magazine exclusive production art [c/o Paramount]

Why do you think fans have embraced the new Avatar Aang movie? As an art director, what made it special for you?

I think one of the things that was interesting to me is that I was working with our production designer [Jake Panian] — he is a true powerhouse of an artist. He had this quality bar that was set so high. What was exciting to me is that I wanted to match that and I wanted to inspire myself to reach those levels of quality and have it reflect across the board in the entire movie, through all the hundreds of shots.

We were trying to help inspire people all across the world who worked on this movie with us. We all wanted to push our craft forward to make something we’re all going to be really proud of. I think the art was really inspiring to me, and we all wanted to put something really cool on the big screen.

In terms of mixing 2D and CG, we had to come up with an interesting process. A lot of the time those two processes don’t necessarily gel well together. In a CG animated film, you can light the CG set and move the camera, and move the characters or tweak them a bit. But in 2D animation, you have decide what the shot is going to be early on and commit to that because the character layout has to be correct, the camera layout has to be correct; and you can’t move the camera, because then you’d have a whole different shot and the perspectives won’t line up of.

So, the processes that we learned for getting it right took time, and we had to kind of unearth some of those old tricks from back in the day that we had maybe forgotten about, and we had to make this all those pieces come together. But that challenge was exciting for all of us because we all love 2D so much.

I’m immensely thankful for Paramount for the opportunity and the whole creative team. Flying Bark in Australia absolutely put their flag in as one of the elite animation studios in the world after this film. I think not only did all the teams I got to interact with did an incredible job in terms of CG layouts, background paint and background layout, the 2D animators were also absolutely world class and they deserve that credit. Korea’s Studio Mir and Studio Ppuri also came on board and gave everything they had to make sure the film got across the finish line. We were lucky to meet them and work with them, and they did an incredible job as well, and we’re immensely grateful for everything that they gave to us.

The family-friendly film, directed by Derek Drymon, will screen in the afternoon on October 26, the Closing Day of the festival, at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre as part of the Red Carpet Premieres section. Paramount Pictures Set to Miss San Diego Comic-Con 2025

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Mecca of all things geek, will be short on some of the key franchises that make fandom tick, WrapPRO is reporting, with major film studios, including Paramount Pictures (Smurfs, Star Trek), Sony (Ghostbusters, Spider-Man), Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Warner Bros. (DC), Legendary (Dune, Godzilla), and Lionsgate (John Wick) all skipping a film presence at the conference’s famed Hall H, the 6,500-seat venue that has traditionally served as a launchpad for major franchise announcements and the premiere of exclusive sneak peaks.

Nickelodeon's Comic-Con International: San Diego 2022 booth
Nickelodeon's Comic-Con International: San Diego 2022 booth

Multiple insiders who spoke to TheWrap said it simply comes down to timing and cost, but acknowledged the challenges that come with the event.

“I think it’s expensive to go and hard for movies to really pop there now and move the needle,” one top marketing exec told TheWrap. “It used to feel like a must.”

For their part, the organizers of Comic-Con are cognizant of the effort it takes to create a splashy presence at their show.

“While we hope every studio or network could attend every year, we know that can’t always be the case,” said David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer for San Diego Comic Convention. “And if there are some who can’t make it this year, we’ll be here in 2026 and eagerly await their return.”

Scheduling a slot at Comic-Con is delicate work and at least this year, the timing doesn’t match up. Studios, for instance, make Hall H commitments roughly six months in advance, according to a second marketing executive who spoke to TheWrap.

“For us, we always go by release date,” the executive said. “So we were like, ‘All right, we got a movie within a couple months after Comic-Con. Let’s see what we have, what makes sense.’”

The challenge is compounded when studios have films releasing close to Comic-Con dates, which explains why Smurfs is set to be a no-show, as the movie opens on Friday, July 18, the week before Comic-Con 2025.

“You don’t really want to do something with a movie opening a week or two in Hall H, because it’s like, I’ve seen so much of the campaign already,” the executive added. “There’s no surprise left.”

Then there are the financial considerations. A basic Hall H presentation featuring a filmmaker and two actors showing exclusive footage can run into “hundreds of thousands of dollars” when factoring talent fees, travel, accommodations and production expenses, according to one of the marketing executives.

For A-list talent, those costs escalate dramatically. “For the bigger stars, it gets really, really expensive,” the second marketing executive said, noting that hair, makeup, styling and first-class accommodations can push talent costs alone into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Costs and timing complications aside, the studios appear to be missing a chance to generate buzz in an exceptionally friendly environment. While most people have heard of San Diego Comic-Con, hardcore fans know Hall H as the true epicenter of fandom, with fans lining up for days (yes, days) to attend.

The modern era of Hall H began in 2007, when Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige and director Jon Favreau arrived with a surprise trailer for their upcoming Iron Man, heralding Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic performance as Tony Stark and setting into motion the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hall H also played host to Tom Hiddleston’s memorable entrance as Loki in 2013, delivering his “Glorious Purpose” speech in full character; and the return of Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in 2014 for a The Force Awakens panel. Last year, Marvel had fans inside the hall melting down after Downey Jr. unmasked himself as arch villain Doctor Doom for a pair of new Avengers movies (coming in 2026 and 2027).

Comic-Con won’t be completely devoid of studio offerings. Although Paramount is sitting out Hall H, there will be on site activations for the Liam Neeson comedy The Naked GunTheWrap.

It's also important to note that, although Paramount Pictures is expected to sit Comic-Con out this year, other Paramount-owned brands, including Nickelodeon and Paramount+, are expected to have presences at the con, with Nickelodeon announcing earlier this year plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender with immersive fan experiences, exclusive consumer products and giveaways at the event.

For the ultimate fan event of the year, this is a long way from the heights of the original Star Wars trio getting back together or the Avengers assembling, and all eyes will be on whether this is a blip or a sign of Comic-Cons to come.

Parenting, Preschool and The New Normal: Kidscreen Summit 2025 Looks at How Raising Kids Has Changed

In this Kidscreen Summit recap, we examine how a shifting cultural landscape, AI-driven entertainment and the pandemic's lasting effects are reshaping how young children grow, learn and engage with media.

A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids | Kidscreen Summit 2025

The way families raise young children is changing—a trend that was in focus at the 2025 Kidscreen Summit event.

Andrea Strauss and Jane Gould on stage

In a panel called “A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids,” industry experts Andrea Strauss (Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon Brand & Content Insights) and Jane Gould (co-founder and partner of wonderworks insights + strategy) explored how shifting cultural norms, technology and the pandemic have reshaped parenting, childhood experiences and preschool entertainment. Their discussion revealed how today’s parents have redefined traditional parenting, adapting to a rapidly changing media landscape and navigating the lasting effects of an unprecedented global event.

Preschoolers | A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids

A major theme of the conversation was the transformation of parenting styles. Parents today prioritize emotional connection, self-expression and adaptability over traditional discipline. Rather than following strict, expert-led guidelines, many are crafting their own parenting approaches, often seeking advice from online communities rather than traditional sources. As Strauss explained, “Kids’ worlds have evolved from a more rigid, authority-based reality to a more flexible, individualized approach. Parenting styles have shifted from control to warmth, and today’s families operate more like teams, where kids’ opinions matter.”

The panel also addressed the lingering effects of the pandemic on young children and their families. Many preschoolers today experienced limited socialization during their formative years, and that has impacted their emotion regulation skills and adaptability. As Strauss emphasized, “The world kids are growing up in has moved from a shared popular culture to one of infinite personalization… This is truly the pandemic generation. Born from 2017 to 2022, their births bookend one of the most disruptive and consequential events in their parents’ lifetimes.”

Digital Native Parents Are Raising AI Native Kids | A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids

Another major focus was the evolving role of digital media. AI-driven algorithms now shape children’s entertainment experiences, creating a highly personalized viewing landscape. As a result, young viewers expect instant, customized content. While this shift has changed the way kids engage with media, it has also influenced parental priorities. Many parents now seek entertainment that fosters emotional intelligence and models positive behaviors, reinforcing the importance of social-emotional learning alongside traditional education.

The conversation also highlighted how parents’ trust in traditional authorities has waned. Unlike previous generations, which largely accepted expert recommendations, today’s parents are more likely to challenge conventional wisdom. Many are embracing alternative educational paths, such as hybrid learning and homeschooling, and turning to social media and peer networks for parenting advice.

The Pandemic Effect | A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids

Gould underlined this, adding that “83% of parents told us that the world was becoming less safe for kids. Eighty-one percent say there’s too much pressure on parents today to be perfect, and 75% say it’s harder to be a parent today than it was for [their] parents.”

Strauss noted that “rather than conformity, the messages kids hear from parents celebrate self-discovery and support individual happiness and new definitions of success. The pendulum has swung from ‘children should be seen and not heard’ to ‘children should be seen, heard and understood.'”

Family And Feelings Are Key Content Drivers | A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids

Family bonding emerged as a central theme throughout the discussion. Parents and children today spend more time together than previous generations, prioritizing shared experiences and co-viewing entertainment. According to Gould, “Portraying positive family relationships is key. They are both looking for content that showcases family, parents and kids, because—guess what—they’re in a bubble. It’s all about us. What are we going to do? How will we feel about this? What are we going to watch?” She emphasized that content plays a vital role in strengthening family connections, noting that “91% of parents agree that content offers something the whole family can enjoy together, and 90% agree that watching content helps them bond with their children.”

Content Brings Joy & Connection | A New Preschool Paradigm: How Families Are Navigating Life with Young Kids

Ultimately, the panel underscored how parenting and early childhood experiences are undergoing a fundamental transformation. Parents are redefining success, happiness and well-being, adapting to an unpredictable world with more flexible and personalized approaches to raising the next generation.
