'PAW Patrol: The Movie' at the Box Office [Continuous Updates]

The PAW Patrol is bounding onto the big screen in their first theatrical adventure, PAW Patrol: The Movie! Below are the latest reports on how the film is performing at box offices around the world.

It's important to note that overseas markets are in a continual state of flux, which will most likely affect box office results. Australia has regions representing 65% of the box office in lockdown. Japan, Mexico and Korea have all-time highs of Covid cases and France and Italy are still dealing with the health pass (or negative test) requirement to attend cinemas.

Update (9/6) - In its fourth week at the box office, PAW Patrol: The Movie bit off $4 million domestically between Friday and Sunday and is projected to boost that take to $5.2 million by the end of the long Labor Day weekend. PAW Patrol fell -39.9% from the previous weekend, managing a $1,331 per-screen average at 3,004 locations. To date, the pups have racked up $31.5 million in North America and have dog-piled on an additional $50.3 million from overseas, putting the film’s worldwide take at $81.8 million.

Update (8/30) - PAW Patrol: The Movie opened at 352 cinemas across Spain on August 27 and became the No. 1 film at the Box Office during its opening weekend!

Update (8/29) - In its second week at the U.S. box office, PAW Patrol: The Movie moved down to third place, earning $6.6 million over the weekend and $24 million in total. PAW Patrol slid -49.6% from the previous weekend, managing a $2,077 per-screen average at 3,189 locations.

Internationally, the pups fetched another $10.3M in 46 markets during the weekend to lift the international cume to $37.8M in 85% of the offshore footprint. Positive word of mouth helped the drop to come in at just 30%. In new openings, Russia gave the troupe a No. 3 start with $770K at 1,220 locations; Spain was a No. 1 launch with $590K from 352. Also debuting to No. 1 were Argentina and Chile. Germany had a great 11% dip while France was down 29%. The top markets to date are the UK with $7.9M, France at $6.9M and Germany at $6.1M.

To date, the pups have racked up $24.1 million in North America and have dug up an additional $37.8 million from overseas, putting the film’s worldwide take at $61.9 million.

Update (8/22) - PAW Patrol: The Movie, a Paramount release targeted at very young kids that’s also streaming on Paramount+, earned $13 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, debuting in the U.S. box office charts at Number 2. It was by far the best of the weekend's new openers.

The relative success of PAW Patrol came as a bit of a surprise, even to those involved. Although the movie is based on an immensely popular Nickelodeon series, its target audience of under 6-year-olds is a wild card. Delta variant concerns and its availability to stream at home made it even more of a moving target.

Chris Aronson, the president of domestic distribution for Paramount Pictures told the AP that the weekend was a “Very nice, very pleasant surprise.”

“It’s a younger skewing audience and we’re in interesting times, but I think our marketing teams, both on our side and the exhibition side, did a terrific job at getting the message out,” Aronson said. “The pups are very beloved and have a very, very loyal audience.”

The studio said the audience who turned out to theaters was diverse (41% white, 34% Hispanic and 20% Black) and predominately comprised of families with very young children. Aronson also noted that for the younger kids, PAW Patrol is likely their first experience in a movie theater ever.

Globally,  this session added 33 new markets and wagged up a further $12.8M for a $21.5M offshore cume to date.

Update (8/15) - Fans in France definitely turned up for Paw Patrol: The Movie, which took $2.3M from 610 locations. In six total markets the team took a fierce $5.8M (including paid previews). The UK led at No. 2 with $3.2M from 582 locations. The current frame reps 22% of the total international paw-print as 33 markets are set to go next weekend including Germany, Mexico, Korea, Japan and the Middle East. The movie will also premiere domestically in the U.S. on August 20, simultaneously in theaters and on Paramount+.
