Nickelodeon to Release 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Cookbook in August 2021

Nickelodeon to Release Avatar: The Last Airbender Cookbook in August 2021

The return of Avatar: The Last Airbender into the public consciousness has been one of the few high points of 2020. Thanks to the arrival of both it and its sequel series The Legend of Korra onto Netflix and CBS All Access, a brand new generation of people are discovering the magic of both series. Part of that magic is the depth of its setting, which draws extensively on multiple cultures to create something that is simultaneously believable and utterly fantastic. Fans are always looking for new ways to explore this world, and a new cookbook from Simon & Schuster’s Insight Editions imprint is going to let them do exactly that by letting them recreate foods from all four nations of the Avatar universe!

The book is being written by Jenny Dorsey, a Shanghai-born chef and food writer who has competed on both Chopped and Cutthroat Kitchen. The book is divided up into four sections, with each nation getting a set of mains, appetizers, sides, desserts, and drinks themed around their unique cuisines. According to the publisher, information will be provided to adapt the sixty included recipes to different diets as needed. Thanks to some images posted on the websites of book retailers, we already have some idea of the contents.

Fans of the show will recognize things like Fire Flakes, Guru Pathik’s Onion-Banana Juice, Sea Prune Stew, and, naturally, Cactus Juice (it’ll quench ya). You can also see how the cultures that influenced each nation have been taken into account, with traditional things like Athabaskan Akutaq (a.k.a. Alaskan Ice Cream) and Tibetan Momos getting recipes right alongside the more fanciful things. Some of the names feel a bit like a themed restaurant (Toph’s Crispy Fish Filet or Sozin's Comet drink, anyone?) but there does seem to be quite a bit of thought being put into the selection of dishes to fit the show. It is yet to be seen, however, where we’re supposed to get a possum-duck or an Arctic hen. Maybe the Cabbage Merchant will know.

These are still just draft pages, but the photography already looks amazing.

The hardcover book will be released in the U.S. on August 21st of 2021 and in the U.K. on August 24, 2021, so you’ve got plenty of time to work up an appetite. You can pre-order it at most online book stores, where it’s gonna run you $24.99 USD/£19.00 GBP. Pre-order the book now at Simon & Schuster and on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
