‘Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender’ Leak Draws Ire From Animators and Artists Who Worked on the Movie

It’s been a viral week for fans of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, following the leak of footage from the upcoming aged-up feature film Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender (formerly The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender) on X on Sunday, April 12. There were reports that the full movie had been sent “accidentally” via email to an X user, who posted clips featuring the aged-up Team Avatar and the movie’s villain, voiced by Dave Bautista. This was followed by reports that the whole movie had been leaked online.

Netizens suspect that the leak was a protest against the recently merged Paramount Skydance studio’s decision to pull Aang from its theatrical release schedule, in favor of a streaming-only release on Paramount+ slated for October.

The much-anticipated animated movie was due out in theaters on October 9, 2026, but Paramount subsequently set Paramount+ as the exclusive home of Avatar Studios content, forcing The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender and original series Avatar: Seven Havens both onto the platform.

Avatar fans who were looking forward to seeing the movie in theaters questioned the decision, which came as a surprise in the context of huge box office success for anime films last year. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, for example, grossed an incredible $774 million at the global box office.

The Aang leak followed leaks of Illumination/Nintendo’s recently released Super Mario Galaxy Movie and 20th Century’s Avatar: Fire & Ash on the platform using the “X Premium” feature allowing videos up to three hours long to be posted.

It also follows “leaks” of the aged-up character designs for Aang revealed in a line of Target merchandise last month.

Airbender fans have eagerly shared clips from the footage across social media, including X and TikTok, in the following days. While the movie is winning praise for its design work and cinematic animation (living up to director Lauren Montgomery’s comments that the movie “deserves to be seen on the big screen”), members of the animation community have expressed outrage at the leak, calling it disrespectful to the artists who worked on it to spoil the release — streaming or no.

Whilst Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon haven't officially commented on the incident, posts on X from people who worked on the recently wrapped project expressed their frustration with the leak. In a thread, animator Julia Schoel (The Legend of PipiMoon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Helluva Boss) wrote:

“We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters… just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy.

“I don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+, but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”

Responding to a comment asking why pirating later would have been better, Schoel added,

“Leaking a movie before release undermines the entire effort at its most vulnerable moment. No marketing buildup, premieres, etc, which harms the film's reputation and affects future opportunities for the artists who worked on it.

“Pirating on the other hand, happens after the film has already had the chance to reach audiences through official channels, and does not harm its reputation.”

Schoel has drawn some criticism for the comments, but was backed by others, and, crucially, colleagues in the entertainment industry.

Tessa Bright, an animation director at Flying Bark — which worked on the Avatar Studios/Nickelodeon Animation project’s development — who worked on the film “in a leadership capacity,” built on this thread with the following commentary:

“Hi all, I worked on this film on a leadership capacity. I understand that we all have opinions about what happened and what you decide to do is your personal choice. But it breaks my heart to see the way some fans are treating the hard-working artists who dedicated years of their lives to bring you the best possible work they can with this film. It’s perfectly reasonable for anyone who worked on this project to be frustrated at this situation. The amount of effort and dedication it took to make this film happen speaks for itself in the final product and I'm sure a lot of you will agree. And even if you disagree with us, I hope that you can find it in yourself to still be respectful. To the fans and industry folks who have spoken out for us, thank you, you're a big reason it was all worth it.”

Another person who also worked on the movie took to social media to say the leak “feels pretty awful.” “The only reason the movie looks so good is because there was so much passion directed toward making a truly special moment for ATLA,” they added. “Please support the actual release as well so we can make more movies <3”

Based on the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender is directed by Montgomery with Steve Ahn (Voltron: Legendary Defender) and William Mata (Dora and the Fantastical Creatures) co-directing. Latifa Ouaou, Maryann Garger, Konietzko and DiMartino serve as producers. Award-winning composer Jeremy Zuckerman scored the film.

The voice cast features Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Mattenas Katara, Dionne Quanas Toph, Román Zaragoza as Sokka and Steven Yeunas Zuko, with Dave Bautista as the villain, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Freida Pinto and Ke Huy Quan.

Set years after the events of The Last Airbender, the film begins as Avatar Aang, the world’s last Airbender, learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.
