BOOM! Studios to Release 'Rugrats: The Newspaper Strips' in December 2019

BOOM! Studios today announced the exciting news that it'll be collating the Rugrats comic strips which ran in many newspapers around the world in the late '90s and releasing them in a brand-new book this December!

Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series Rugrats premiered in 1991 and gave the world thirteen seasons of unforgettable baby fun and adventures. With its unique blend of humor and family values, Rugrats established itself as a pop culture phenomenon. It’s unparalleled success gave way to movies, merchandise, and more, including a long run of newspaper comic strips.

Rugrats: The Newspaper Strips will collect the newspaper dailies and Sundays, and will follow the babies on a series stand alone adventures perfect for readers of all ages. The cover art is being designed by Jillian Crab.

BOOM! Studios will release the publication via its critically acclaimed KaBOOM! imprint, publisher of acclaimed, all-ages licensed series from a lineup of all-star content providers. Rugrats: The Newspaper Strips will also release as part of KaBOOM!'s on-going partnership with Nickelodeon, which also includes comics inspired by Rocko's Modern Life and Rugrats, featuring original storylines separate to the series. The publisher is currently releasing Rocko’s Modern Afterlife, and is set to release Rugrats: The Last Token, the first-ever Rugrats original graphic novel, in November 2019.

Rugrats was a daily comic strip based on the Nickelodeon animated television series Rugrats. Like the program, the comic strip was written to be humorous to both kids and adults. The strip originally ran from April 5, 1998 to May 3, 2003.

Occasional comic strips conflicted with the continuity of the television series, reintroducing characters in different scenarios, but some take plotlines from episodes.

For the weeks of November 26 to December 9, 2000, the strips were themed to the feature film Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. The assumption is that the readers have seen the feature film, not fully dealing with the major plot points of the movie. In the November 30 strip, Kimi first appears in the comic strip, without any introduction to the character. The first week after the series is about Chuckie being excited that he has a new sister.

Writers for the comic strip series were Scott Gray, Gordon Kent, Lee Nordling, Chuck Kim, Scott Roberts, J. Torres, Mark Bilgrey, John Zakour, and Rob Moran. The original artist was Steve Crespo, pencils and inks. Crespo left early on, and Will Blyberg took over inking, while other pencilers included: Gary Fields, Kyle Baker, (who did his own inking) a South American known only as "Rodrigues", Tim Harkins, Vince Giarrano, and Scott Roberts (the only contributor to both write and draw the strip.) By the end, Roberts was the sole penciler, and Blyberg inked until the final strip. Sundays were colored by Stu Chaifitz. Tim Harkins and Gary Fields lettered even after they stopped penciling.

Early strips had no continuity, but later years featured short storylines.

In all, 130 newspapers carried the comic strip at some point during its run, in the United States, Australia, Brazil, and Canada.

Scott Gray and Tim Harkins also created two special strips for Mott's Flavored Applesauce, single-serving.

Below is BOOM! Studios' full advanced solicitation for the Rugrats book:
