Ramsey Naito Reveals 'Kamp Koral' Was Created by Stephen Hillenburg
Update (and maybe correction) - 11/8: It appears that I may have misinterpreted the interview. With Naito talking about how it was Hillenburg's idea to make the series CGI instead of 2D animation. Below is the part of the interview that talks about Kamp Koral.
"TW: What can you tell us about the SpongeBob spinoff Kamp Koral? Why is it being created in CGI as opposed to SpongeBob, which is two-dimensional?
RN: This series embraces what makes camp so special. It’s a place where new friendships are formed and memories are made. Our ability to create a really elastic squash-and-stretch-and-defy-all-gravity type of animation style in CGI is 100 percent doable. And the cartoony naturalistic texturing and underwater lighting allows Bikini Bottom to shine in a way we haven’t seen before.
TW: How did that idea come about?
RN: It came from the genius mind of Steve Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob Squarepants. At its heart, Kamp Koral is about friendship and it shares the origin story of how our Bikini Bottom friends all met."
Original article:
Ramsey Naito, the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon, has revealed in a Sponge-Tastic interview with the Viacom Newsroom more details about Kamp Koral, an original spinoff series of the network's iconic hit, SpongeBob SquarePants!
Talking about the series and why it's being produced in CGI as opposed to SpongeBob, which is two-dimensional, Naito revealed "This series embraces what makes camp so special. It’s a place where new friendships are formed and memories are made. Our ability to create a really elastic squash-and-stretch-and-defy-all-gravity type of animation style in CGI is 100 percent doable. And the cartoony naturalistic texturing and underwater lighting allows Bikini Bottom to shine in a way we haven’t seen before."
When Kamp Koral was first announced earlier this year, it's fair to say that the announcement was met with quite a bit of criticism, including claims that it goes against the wishes of Stephen Hillenburg's, the late creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, who sadly passed away in November last year. However, fans don't need to worry, as Kamp Koral is actually created by Hillenburg!
When asked how the idea for Kamp Koral revealed, Naito added: "It came from the genius mind of Steve Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. At its heart, Kamp Koral is about friendship and it shares the origin story of how our Bikini Bottom friends all met."
Kamp Koral introduces 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp. The series was greenlit earlier this year and commenced production in June 2019 at Nickelodeon Studios in Burbank, California.
In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. The series is slated to premiere during summer 2020.
Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers on the series.
Nickelodeon Animation are currently recruiting staff to work on the series. Visit https://www.nickanimation.com/jobs to see all vacancies and to apply.
SpongeBob SquarePants, which was recently greenlit for a 13th season, has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical which is now touring North America and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is seen in more than 208 countries and territories, translated in 55+ languages, and averages more than 100 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants is created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.
Nickelodeon's is currently in the midst of the network's "Best Year Ever", a year-long global celebration of one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created. The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, coming May 2020.
More Nick: 'The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage!' to Debut on Nickelodeon in December 2019!
