'44 Cats' Expands Licensing Program in North America

44 Cats, produced by Rainbow Group and airing on Nickelodeon channels globally, is expanding its publishing program in North America with board books, storybooks and early readers from HarperCollins Children's Books! This brand licensing deal was brokered by The Joester Loria Group and Branding Stream for the USA and Canada respectively.

HarperCollins Publishers, one of the largest consumer book publishers in the world, is adding 44 Cats to their impressive portfolio of the top children’s brands. HarperCollins will release 44 Cats: Meet the Cats featuring the Buffycats - Lampo, Milady, Pilou and Meatball – the lead characters in 44 Cats, in March 2020.

The 44 Cats television series debuted in the United States on June 10th, on Nickelodeon and is in frequent rotation on Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons. Daily Canadian broadcasts launched on Yoopa (French-speaking) and on Treehouse with weekday airings and on YTV during weekends (English-speaking).

“We are very excited to be partnering with Rainbow for a robust publishing program that we hope will entertain and delight 44 Cats fans everywhere. These cats are poised for success in our tried and true formats for preschoolers. The power of the 44 Cats brand grows stronger by the day and the character’s global appeal will be sure to keep these cats in homes (and stores) for a long time,” said Alexandra West, Associate Editor for HarperCollins Children’s Books.

In addition, 44 Cats is partnering with Zak Designs, a global leader in licensed dinnerware, drinkware and on-the-go-beverageware for licensed products. Like the publishing deal, this brand licensing deal was also brokered by The Joester Loria Group and Branding Stream.

The series made its world debut on Rai Yoyo in Italy (locally titled 44 Gatti) in November 2018 and is enjoying tremendous popularity throughout the world, with a second series already in production. The 52 x 13’ series is an explosive mix of music and cuteness that deals with edutainment themes such as tolerance, diversity and altruism, combining positive values, action and comedy in a sophisticated CGI production. The show, which appeals to preschoolers and children aged 4 – 7, follows the adventures of Lampo, Milady, Pilou, and Meatball - four adorable kittens who are part of a music band named The Buffycats - helping others and always finding creative solutions to everyday hitches.

44 Cat’s brand licensing programs are managed by The Joester Loria Group in the United States and Branding Streams in Canada.

The series is produced by Rainbow in collaboration with Antoniano Bologna and Rai Ragazzi.

44 Cats has just been awarded the Golden Dolphin for Best Animated Series in the overseas category at the Cyber Sousa Competition as part of the 12th edition of Xiamen International Animation Festival, China’s most influential festival for animation and comics. The XIAF is supported by ASIFA (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation) and ASIFA-CHINA, and promotes the development of the animation industry, comics and video games boosting information technology’s application and international exchange. The award is a further recognition for the whole team at Rainbow, already working on a second 52 x 13’ season and delivering a top quality show that is quickly growing into a preschool classic.

Kel Mitchell is a two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor, producer and stand-up comic hailing from the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. Currently, Mitchell is executive producing and appearing in the new iteration of the beloved Nickelodeon sketch series All That with his fellow alum Kenan Thompson, bringing him full circle since he got his big break and won several awards for the original show. All That was Nickelodeon’s longest-running live-action series with 171 episodes across 10 seasons from 1994 to 2005. The franchise paved the way for a number of successful spinoffs, including Kenan & Kel (starring Mitchell and Thompson), The Amanda Show (starring Amanda Bynes), The Nick Cannon Show and the feature-length film Good Burger (starring Mitchell and Thompson), all of which cemented the show’s and Mitchell’s impact on pop culture.

Additionally, Mitchell is the host of the heart-warming TV series Tails of Valor, which takes a look at true stories of service animals working to change people’s lives. The show airs on CBS Saturday mornings. He also recently starred as Double G, an impulsive and unpredictable billionaire rapper on Nickelodeon's Game Shakers. Other acting credits include Nickelodeon series Sam & Cat and The Thundermans, Nicktoons USA's Wild Grinders, TRU TV’s Friends of the People, Cartoon Network’s Loiter Squad, TV One’s Love That Girl, as well as Disney Channel’s Liv & Maddie, PBS' Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Netflix's Veggie Tales.

Additionally, Mitchell wrote and directed the faith-based, anti-bullying film She Is Not My Sister, and also directed several music videos. When he is not acting, writing or directing, Mitchell speaks to youth across the country encouraging them to follow their dreams.

Follow Kel Mitchell on Twitter and Instagram.

Kel isn't the only star with a Nickelodeon history competing on this season's Dancing with the Stars! Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek once appeared in an episode of Clarissa Explains It All, where he gave Melissa Joan Hart her first on-screen kiss!

Dancing with the Stars U.S. version of the hit UK dancing competition series Strictly Come Dancing.

Wishing Kel and everybody competing on this season of Dancing with the Stars the best of luck! :)

'Dancing With the Stars': Kel Mitchell Pens Message After Losing Mirrorball Trophy to Hannah Brown

Kel Mitchell is sending love to pro partner and "little sis" Witney Carson after #TeamDanceWitKel came in as runners-up in Monday's Dancing With the Stars Season 28 finale. Hannah Brown and pro partner Alan Bersten may have ended up taking home the mirrorball trophy, but Mitchell had no regrets when it came to ending his time on the show with a energetic freestyle to “Jump” by Kriss Kross.

Sharing a photo of himself and Carson beaming in their matching "K+W" jerseys from their final dance, the Nickelodeon star took to the caption to show all his appreciation for the woman who had been by his side throughout the ups and downs of his DWTS journey.

"Hey Little Sis! Young WC!" Mitchell began his note. "[Witney Cartson], it was such a pleasure working with you on [Dancing With the Stars] we laughed, we cried, we prayed together and most importantly had fun!"

"It was an amazing journey that I will never forget and last night was epic, our freestyle represented my hometown Chicago and it was awesome seeing you smile so big while Chicago footworking!" he continued. "Our freestyle dance was a celebration of all our hard work on this season! We are winners and we stay winning everyday! Continued success and blessings to you and your family Wit! #teamdancewitkel #teamJesus #countitalljoy"

Brown was quick to chime in and congratulate her runners-up, writing, "#teamJesus y’all were amazing!!"

Saturday Night Live's Kenan Thompson, Mitchell's longtime comedy and producing partner, gushed, "Bro!!! You did that!!! We’re all so proud of you!!! Congratulations @iamkelmitchell on a great run!!!!"

Even former White House Press Secretary and DWTS alum Sean Spicer had kind words for Mitchell, writing, "You and @witneycarson crushed that freestyle. You guys ended the season on the highest note."

Carson has yet to address the close call in the finale on social media, but prior to Monday's finale shared a heartfelt message to her partner on Instagram.

"Tonight is the night you guys!!!!! I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together [Kel Mitchell]!" she wrote. "You have been such an incredible student, teammate, & big brother. You are a true [star] & I cannot wait to dance with you tonight! It’s gonna be one to remember!"

'Dancing With the Stars' Pro Witney Carson 'Not Mad' About Second Place With Dance Partner Kel Mitchell (Exclusive)

Dancing With the Stars pro, Witney Carson came so close to winning the Mirror Ball trophy yet again, but she is certainly not mad about coming in second to former Bachelorette, Hannah Brown and her partner, Alan Bersten. After getting paired with Nickelodeon star, Kel Mitchell this season, the professional ballroom dancer and actor managed to find themselves in a heated season coming in hot as the runner-up couple. But this isn't the first time Carson has found herself in such a position. Fans will recall, she and partner Milo Manheim came in second place last year to country radio host Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess. In an exclusive interview with PopCulture.com, Carson recalls what was going through her head during Monday night's fiery finale.

"Oh, that was crazy!" she told PopCulture.com when asked what she was thinking during that moment. "I just kept thinking I've been here before and I really want that mirror ball so bad. I've been so close to it so many times and it's been a long time since I've actually won. So just to be there was obviously an honor, everybody there was so amazing, the celebrities were just incredible. So just being there was an honor, but of course you want to win."

The Utah native confessed that she already felt like she and Mitchell had won because of their routines, as well as the growth the 41-year-old former child star had shown her and audiences over the course of 11 weeks.

"I felt like Kel and I had such a great night. I felt like I had already won because of the routines that we did and the growth that he'd shown," she revealed before adding that it's a "popularity contest" and America showed who they wanted to see win. "I'm happy about the dances and the routines and most importantly Kel's growth as a dancer. And I learned so much, so I'm not mad. I'm not mad at all, and I felt honored to be there honestly."

It was not only an exciting time for Carson because of DWTS, but because this month is near and dear to her heart as it's National Family Caregivers Month. The 26-year-old explained that she sympathizes with family caregivers who are taking care of family or friends battling cancer because she was once a caregiver herself after her father-in-law was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. While he passed away last March, the impression it made on Carson is everlasting.

"It was a huge moment in my life where we learned that he was terminal in probably about the beginning of December of last year and I have to decide if I was going to go on tour or not with Dancing with the Stars. It was something that was really important to spend that time with him and to spend that time with my husband and with my family, so I decided to do that," she explained. "So we skipped out on tour to be with family, be with him and we lived with him at the time and we took care of him every day. We gave him medicine, we changed out his IVs, and we helped with the home health nurse and we did really everything that could until the da he passed away."

That's why she's speaking on behalf of Stand Up To Cancer in light of "National Family Caregivers Month," to help recognize those who are caregivers themselves. In fact, through the organization, she invited a woman named Shelby Nish and her mother, who is Nish's caregiver, who battles with stage IV Melanoma cancer and was diagnosed when she was 9 months pregnant, to an episode of the popular dance competition.

"That was wonderful," Carson beamed. "I just really wanted to give them something special and give them something to look forward to. It's always such a hard time when you go through this together — it's just a miserable time that you have really nothing to look forward to, so I felt like this is really important for them to come to a show, and they were huge fans and they were super sweet and just so nice, so I'm so glad that we were able to do that for them."

As this emotional month comes to an end for Carson, so does her work. She will be taking some well-deserved time off with her family before she gears up for Dancing with the Stars Live Tour. Click here to get tickets.

Janet Varney Talks Working on 'Legend of Korra', Including Korrasami

If one were to look in the closet of artistic hats Janet Varney has worn throughout her career it’d be packed. Examining a few: Host of her own podcast. Star of a beloved animated series. Co-writer of a digital comedy TV series. Co-Founder, Co-Producer, and Co-Creative Director of an annual festival.

In Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series (2012-2014) her titular cartoon counterpart was a super powered multitasker able to wield and control all four Earthly elements; Varney can’t control waves or float on clouds, but it’s easy to see her and her character Korra share some real world commonalities with the many projects she’s juggled at the same time.

Before, during, and after that series Varney has stayed quite busy; last week The Beat was fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with her, in a phone interview, about her many projects including the upcoming SF Sketchfest (Jan 9-26), Legend of Korra (including Korrasami!), and her favorite holiday films (including Scrooged!).

Below are extracts of The Beat's super interview with Varney, in which the actor talks about her time on The Legend of Korra. Make sure to read the full interview on comicsbeat.com!

The Beat: [...] For four seasons you got to voice a teen transiting into young womanhood on Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra cartoon series. As Korra, was it fun to jump back into that adolescent mindset but in this expansive fantasy universe [Michael Dante DiMartino] and Bryan [Konietzko] created?

Varney: Oh absolutely! I would have been excited to be any part of that show at all; the fact that I got to voice Korra was just so shocking and wonderful and kind of unbelievable. It was a very funny coincidence because I had just started doing the podcast and so when I got the part it felt a little bit serendipitous because I was very much steeped in all of our teen experiences already. I was like, “Oh cool! This is a weird dovetail into me connecting with something else that I’m working on.”

I remember the first season — and by the way I don’t ever read feedback online because I definitely am like, “I’m not good at weeding through mean things for some nice things, so I just let people tell me nice things in person.” [laughs]

But I remember the first season people would be like, “I love the new show, but I was so use to Aang, and Korra is really frustrating me. What’s her problem?” I felt really connected to Korra in that way when I would defend her which is that I would say, “Imagine if you were in her position and you were a teenager and all of this was thrust upon you.” You don’t understand your mortality when you’re a teenager; it seems like we either feel like we’re the most helpless person in the world or we’re the most powerful. Or we’re trying to front as if we are powerful and as if we do have control of situations when we don’t. So everything that she did that I think was frustrating to fans initially, and some people were fine with it, was just the humanity of it and that’s what I loved about her; I loved that she had to go through that and go on that journey.

TB: Korra as a series certainly wasn’t afraid to shy away from moments of darkness – Zaheer bending the air out of The Earth Queen. Tarrlok blowing himself and his brother Amon up. When you were getting those scripts, while working on the show, were you and the cast ever shocked at how far the creative team was willing to push the envelope of this so called children’s cartoon series?

Varney: Well I think shocked wouldn’t be the word — I think really impressed. I think the show comes out swinging with this really fantastic new piece of this universe that Mike and Bryan created, and the sophistication of the big city and all of that kind of stuff; then it brings us a level of maturity with Amon, the first villain, that really sets itself up for the progression of things escalating with the drama, and the action, and the tough stuff right through the forth season just with that first season alone.

So I think I was never surprised, but I was always impressed. I think the rest of the cast felt the same way just in terms of, like you said, not pulling any punches — really trusting in the fans to get the most out of the storytelling that was happening and understanding that sometimes you have to go to dark places to find that light.

TB: Fortunately the show wasn’t just filled with darkness. It featured the much adored romance between Korra and her eventual girlfriend Asami [voiced by Seychelle Gabriel]. What was that storyline discovery like for you as an actor? While working on the show did you ever get to talk to Mike, Bryan, or Seychelle about it and how big of a deal it was?

Varney: Yeah! We did get to talk about it; it was really great. I absolutely adore Seychelle, and we worked so well together, which is true for the whole cast. As a person she’s a fearless, progressive, funny, sympathetic person, and I’d like to think in my best days I’m the same [laughs].

So, when Mike and Bryan — they actually did pull us aside while we were recording at one point. [It] was something they didn’t usually do; they didn’t usually tell us a ton about what was coming up in seasons ahead or in episodes ahead. While it might seem dramatic to pull your actors aside to talk about a love story — the reality is where cartoons were, and just the fact it was Nickelodeon and stuff like that they had to be mindful of and sensitive to the fact that this was breaking new ground in some ways.

[That’s] not to say there hasn’t been LGBTQ+ stuff called out in anime or in cartoons before but this was a high profile one, and so they wanted to share where the story was headed. They did sort of ask — not for our blessing cause’ those guys really know what they’re doing and they’re fairly uncompromising in that way, in a good way — but they just wanted to let us know and see what we thought about it. I think both our eyes teared up and we were smiling so hard our cheeks hurt, so they got a pretty good sense right away that we thought it was really wonderful. We were so excited to see the story go in that direction.

TB: Having voiced Korra, how does it feel to know her and her friends adventures are continuing and still capturing fans imaginations in new [Dark Horse] comics [released] well after the series has ended?

Varney: Oh I love it! I’m such a fan of Irene Koh‘s illustrations, and she as a person is really remarkable — she did an episode of my podcast as well actually! So just getting to see things were they picked up and really I think it was the right thing to do just saying “Hey! Guess what? We’re going to pick up exactly where we left off.” Versus, “It’s been two years and Korra and Asami blah, blah, blah…” You know?

I was excited, and I’ve actually had the honor of being a part of some Dark Horse events at various Comic Cons where we’ve read passages from the book and done giveaways and trivia and all kinds of stuff to do with all the various books including the Poster Book and including the Airbender books that proceeded Korra. So, being connected with that world even as the cartoon itself has ended has been such as privilege.

TB: My final Avatar related question for you is Mike and Bryan are currently hard at work on a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix. If you could make a cameo on that show and portray anyone from a live-action bender to a random village person is there anyone you’d want to be?

Varney: I mean listen if they want to put some mega makeup on me and have me peddle cabbage juice I would really be on board for that, but probably there’s someone better suited for it than I! [Laughs] But that being said — Yeah! Anywhere they wanted to bury me I would be more than happy to do that. I don’t know that they know that, so I’m not sure they’re going to be calling me to roll a cart across the street, but I definitely am excited to see what they do and that they get to really be at the helm of this right? Because as we all know they had like nothing to do with the live-action movie and it showed.
