'SpongeBob SquarePants' Showrunner Reveals Production Update Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Few characters have become as beloved or popular in memes as SpongeBob SquarePants, and if you were worried about the status of new episodes and the show's 13th season due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) epidemic, fear no more. SpongeBob SquarePants showrunner Vincent Waller took to social media to give fans a production update on the show's next season on Nickelodeon, and while the team is working remotely, they are still moving forward with the season, and new episodes of SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and the whole Bikini Bottom crew will be on the way. That said, no exact release date was given, but I'll keep you updated whenever Nickelodeon reveals it.

Waller wrote "To those who were worried, SpongeBob is doing fine. Production continues, we are All working from home during the lock down. Nickelodeon’s leaders have been great at logistics and support during this crazy time. Stay Safe Stay Home 🏠 #season13isHeadingToYou".

I'm glad to hear everyone is safe and healthy and working from the safety of their homes, and at least fans will have new episodes to watch sooner than later.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has caused Paramount to push back the release date of the third SpongeBob Movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run to Friday, July 31, instead of on Memorial Day, Friday, May 22 as planned. The North American tour of the Tony award winning The SpongeBob Musical has also had to cancel the rest of its tour dates.

As for the SpongeBob franchise, it was recently revealed that the franchise is getting two spinoffs on Netflix, and while we don't know much about them, apart from one could be centered on Squidward, the two companies behind it are thrilled to be working together.

“Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit,” Netflix vice president of original animation Melissa Cobb said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to continue collaborating with Brian Robbins, Ramsey Naito, and the creative team at Nickelodeon in new ways as we look to find fresh voices and bring bold stories to our global audience on Netflix.”

“Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal,” said Brian Robbins, President, Nickelodeon. “The Nickelodeon Animation Studio is home to the world-class artists and storytellers behind some of the most iconic characters and shows ever made, and our head of Animation, Ramsey Naito, has been building on that legacy over the past year by ramping up development and production exponentially. The ideas and work at our Studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world.”

The first series released as part of Nickelodeon and Netflix's new partnership is Glitch Techs, with the first nine episodes of the series now available to stream on Netflix globally.

Nickelodeon is also set to debut the network's first SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, this summer. The CG-animated series follows 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at sleepaway camp and stars Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series.

Nicktoons USA to Premiere New Episodes of 'Rise of the TMNT' from Friday, April 24, 2020

COWABUNGA! Andy Suriano, a co-executive producer on Nickelodeon's Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has revealed the Turtley Awesome news on Twitter that Nickelodeon USA is planning to resume premiering brand new episodes of Rise of the TMNT in April 2020!

Update (4/2) - Nicktoons will start to premiere back-to-back brand new episodes of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles starting Friday, April 24!:

It's currently unknown whether the new episodes will air on Nick or Nicktoons, however, as the majority of the last batch of new episodes aired on Nicktoons, it'll most likely be the latter.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a 2D-animated series which follows the band of brothers as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City. The series premiered on Monday 17th September 2018. A second season was commissioned before the show premiered.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reimagines the characters in a fresh new way, featuring jagged-shelled Raphael as a snapping turtle, wielding twin tonfas as his weapons; Leonardo as a red-eared slider, using an ōdachi sword; Donatello as a soft-shell turtle, sporting a tech-bo staff; and Michelangelo as a box turtle, arming himself with a kusari-fundo. Along for the adventure is the Turtles’ most trusted ally, April O’Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker and Splinter, father figure and sensei to the Turtles.

The series stars the voice talent of Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo, Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil and Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter. WWE Superstar John Cena lends his voice as villain, Baron Draxum, an alchemist warrior mutant who seeks to turn all of humanity into mutants.

Considered one of the most popular kids’ television programs of the 1980s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a classic, global property created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It first debuted as a successful comic book series and then became a hit animated TV show, a live-action television series and later spawned numerous blockbuster theatrical releases. The property is a global consumer products powerhouse, winning in every category that has hit shelves to date—with toys, apparel, video games, DVDs and more—and generating billions of dollars at retail. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been the number-one action figure for the past three years and the franchise is a previous recipient of the Toy Industry Association’s top honor for Property of the Year at the TOTY Awards.

The franchise is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary.
