'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Now Available in HD on Netflix
Fans were delighted when Netflix added all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender to its programming library in mid-May, where it instantly became the platform's top title. Now, the streaming service has announced even more great news for fans of Nickelodeon's iconic animated series: Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available to watch in high-definition!
"Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available in HD so if you want to see every glorious fiber of Appa’s fur, now is the time. And if you haven’t watched Avatar yet what are you doing why are you like this," Netflix Tweeted on Sunday, June 21!
Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and airing between 2005 and 2008, the critically-acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in world people can manipulate the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, and they lived peacefully in different regions until one of the nations started a world war. One master who can manipulate all four elements, dubbed the "Avatar," had been able to prevent this war, but disappeared soon after. 100 years later, a new Avatar named Aang awakens and sets out on a journey to master all the elements in order to bring peace to the land once more by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.
The series managed to be such a hit with fans by combining amazing animated action set pieces with three dimensional interesting characters set in this magical fantasy world.
The animated series originally aired for 61 episodes over three seasons ("Books") originally on Nickelodeon, where it began in February 2005 and concluded in July 2008. The series was nominated for—and won—Annie Awards, Genesis Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award.
Its success led to the creation of adjacent consumer products, including video games, and a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang’s death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. In 2010, the series got its first feature-length film, The Last Airbender.
The stories of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have since continued on in graphic novel series.
Netflix will be putting out an Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series from original creators DiMartino and Konietzko sometime in the future, with filming set to begin this year. The streaming giant has said that it plans to stay true to the location and “background heritage” of the animated series after the 2010 film failed to do so.
Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment released the Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook Collection in February 2020.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is also available on CBS All Access, along with its sequel series, The Legend of Korra.

Nickelodeon to Air Older 'Garfield' Animated Series?
When ViacomCBS announced in August last year that it had, through one of its subsidiaries, entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Paws, Inc., the entity holding global intellectual property rights to the Garfield and the U.S. Acres (a.k.a. Orson’s Farm) franchises - including corresponding rights related to content, consumer products, and location-based experiences for the Nickelodeon portfolio, they also revealed that Nickelodeon was planning to develop a new Garfield animated television series.
Following the initial announcement, Garfield fans have been wondering whether Nickelodeon will be airing older Garfield series chronicling the life of the lasagne-loving cat and his family and friends, such as the 2D-animated Garfield and Friends which ran on CBS in the '80s & '90s and and the CG-animated The Garfield Show which ran on Cartoon Network from 2009 to 2012.
Although Nickelodeon hasn't yet suggested any plans to air the classic Garfield series, Mediatoon Distribution, the distribution arm of Media Participations, recently updated their show catalogue pages for 2018's Garfield Originals and 2009's The Garfield Show, to add Nickelodeon as a "Major Broadcaster" for both shows!
The Garfield Show (214x11' - 80x40' - 7x60') is a French-American CG-animated TV series, created by Jim Davis, and produced by Dargaud Media and Paws Inc. Based on the iconic comic strip Garfield, also created by Davis, the animated series focuses on a new series of adventures for the characters of Garfield, Odie, and their owner Jon Arbuckle, alongside staple characters from the strip and a number of unique additions for the program. The Garfield Show originally ran on Cartoon Network in the States.
Garfield Originals (24x3') is a 2019 2D French animated series created by Jim Davis and Philippe Vidal. The series was developed with France's Dargaud Media and Ellipsanime and is the third animated series based on the comic strip Garfield. The series is similar to the Garfield Quickies, which appeared in Garfield and Friends, and The Garfield Shorts, a series of short films containing gags. The series has yet to air in the U.S.
The distribution rights to the '80s Garfield and Friends (121x22') animated series are currently held by a different distribution company - 9 Story Media Group (Blue's Clues & You!) - with Boomerang currently having the rights to broadcast the series in the U.S., so it's unlikely that Nickelodeon, Nicktoons or NickRewind will re-air Garfield and Friends any time soon, having aired the series between 1997 - 2000.
The news comes as Nickelodeon has been busy welcoming Garfield into the Nickelodeon family, including social media posts. Nickelodeon has also been rebranding Garfield's official social media pages to incorporate the Nickelodeon logo.
Most recently, Nickelodeon has updated the official Garfield website, Garfield.com. The new Garfield website is a splash page, with links to Nickelodeon's Garfield property page on nick.com, nick.com/garfield, and Garfield comic strip archive on GoComics.com.
The Professor Garfield mobile website designed for teachers, along with the Garfield game "Sheep Shot" is still currently available at professorgarfield.org.
The acquisition of Garfield is part of Nickelodeon’s strategy to be the home for the biggest franchises kids and families love, and it expands Nickelodeon’s growing portfolio of influential properties that already includes SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blue’s Clues & You!, and The Adventures of Paddington series, as well as the the forthcoming first-ever SpongeBob spinoff, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Big Nate, The Smurfs, and all-new animated Star Trek.
Under ViacomCBS' acquisition for Garfield, the global merchandising rights to Garfield will be managed by ViacomCBS Consumer Products, including the property’s existing portfolio of licensees. Garfield creator Jim Davis will continue to produce the Garfield syndicated comic strip as he has done since creating the lazy feline since 1976.
The cartoon has chronicled the life of the eponymous cat, his owner Jon Arbuckle and Odie the dog, as well as various friends. Known for his love of lasagne and coffee and his disdain for Mondays, Garfield has spawned a slew of movies and TV shows - Garfield and Friends in the 1980s and '90s on CBS and the CG-animated The Garfield Show on Cartoon Network from 2009 to 2012 — and a pair of feature films, Garfield: The Movie (2004), a live-action/animated hybrid in which the corpulent cat was wryly voiced by Bill Murray (Ghostbusters), opposite Breckin Meyer’s Jon, and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006) and three straight-to-video sequels. The property has received four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program for the animated specials Garfield on the Town, Garfield in the Rough, Garfield’s Halloween Special and Garfield’s Babes and Bullets. Garfield and Friends previously aired on Nickelodeon USA between 1997–2000.
