Dev Patel Once Apologized To Fans For 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Movie

A video has resurfaced of Dev Patel apologizing to fans for the live-action movie remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender that he starred in.

Dev Patel once referred to the film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender as "a little bit sh*t." With the beloved Nickelodeon animated series now streaming on Netflix and the highly-anticipated live-action remake heading there soon, the franchise has seen a resurgence in popularity. It's also caused many to remember the ill-fated The Last Airbender movie adaptation.

M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 live-action film based on the animated series was widely panned by most critics. The film was released two years after the animated series ended and was overall rejected by long-time fans for its miscasting and injustice to the story and characters. The movie was an adaptation of the show's first season, telling the story of siblings Katara and Sokka in a world that is divided into Earth, Water, Fire and Air nations. They meet Aang, who discovers he has the power to control all four elements. The movie was meant to be the first in a film trilogy, but was never continued. While the animated series became a success for its animation style, character diversity, and action sequences, the film failed to meet these expectations.

A video from 2015 resurfaced on Twitter this week of Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) signing autographs outside the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of his film The Man Who Knew Infinity, when he revealed how he felt about one of his past projects. In the clip shared by user SnowChllld, Patel signs a fan's The Last Airbender merchandise, saying, "I'm sorry about this film. It was a little bit sh*t, wasn't it?"

This is not the only time Patel has expressed regret about being part of the film. Also in 2015, he told The Guardian, "It's hard promoting a film you didn't enjoy and don't fully believe in, and I felt bad. I felt sorry that I'd let these fans down, because I was a big fan of the cartoon it was based on growing up." Then, in 2016, he was a part of THR's Actor Roundtable and revealed, "I completely felt overwhelmed by the experience. I felt like I wasn't being heard." Patel, who played Prince Zuko in the film, went on to say he "saw a stranger on the screen that I couldn't relate to." All told, the actor has made it clear he wishes he hadn't been a part of the movie or at least that things had gone down differently.

With this reminder of just how poorly The Last Airbender was received, even by one of its stars, some are likely to be skeptical about the upcoming live-action reboot. However, in this case, original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have influence over the project as showrunners and executive producers, which means long-time fans can trust the show will hopefully do the series justice. The duo have promised a none white-washed cast. It's hard to hear again about how much Patel disliked The Last Airbender, but hopefully those cast in the new adaptation will have a better experience.

Kel Mitchell Reprises 'Good Burger' Character for 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Sketch

All That star Ken Mitchell put on his Good Burger uniform during an outing on Friday afternoon (July 17) in West Hollywood, California for a Jimmy Kimmel Live! sketch this weekend. Along with his Good Burger uniform, the 41-year-old actor stayed safe behind a face mask as he carried a to go order from the infamous 90s restaurant in pictures from Just Jared.

Ed the Good Burger Guy has endured as a millennial favorite even now. With All That rebooted on Nickelodeon and Mitchell playing a huge role alongside his friend Kenan Thompson, who both serve as executive producers on the revival, things are decidedly brighter for the comedian these days. While the SNL head man was over in New York City crushing it as the show's longest-serving cast member, Mitchell fell out of the public eye for a while. But, now with All That back on the air, a new generation of kids has had the chance to see his work. His own children can laugh at the Good Burger characters or Repairman and Coach Kreeton among other classics.

A lot of millennial viewers were skeptical when Nickelodeon announced that they were bringing back the youth-focused sketch comedy show. But, the premiere worked in as many old faces as possible and has proven to be a hit with the new generation of Nick viewers. The young performers say that Mitchell has always made them feel empowered on set, even when things aren’t going great.

“Just getting to work with them is such an honor. They constantly are making sure we’re comfortable with everything and making sure we understand everything. They’re just like our big brothers and sisters and second parents,” Gabrielle Green told Hollywood Life last year. “It’s so amazing. Getting to go to work every day, you can’t be sad with Kel Mitchell in the room because he’s always like, 'Hey guys, what’s up?' So if you’re having a bad day, Kel’s the guy to call for sure. He’s always giving us advice and always reminding us that this show is not what makes you special. You were born special.”

Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins was a co-creator and producer of the original All That. He hoped that the relaunch of the sketch show will bring the next batch of Nickelodeon stars to light.

“We think there’s a great opportunity to find the next pool of stars,” Robbins explained. “We want to bring the show back in a real fun way. This summer, we are going to bring back a lot of the original cast and the cast through the years, and let them introduce the new cast of ‘All That’ to the world.” He suggested the program would be “a sort of mash-up of some of the old sketches and a lot of new sketches.”

In 2019, Kel was a runner up on season 28 of Dancing With the Stars. Earlier this year, Kel's professional dance partner, Witney Carson guest starred on All That for a Good Burger-themed dance with Kel.

What’s your favorite Kel Mitchell character? Let me know down in the comments!
