This Independence Day, Nickelodeon launches #SochKaroUpgrade to urge kids to take care of the planet
Independence Day of India is being celebrated with grandeur and fervor by kids’ entertainment franchise, Nickelodeon this year under its initiative #SochKaroUpgrade.
This week-long campaign intends to throw light on environmental issues we are facing today and the simple ways to bring about a change to better our future.
Homebound, people have realised that we have taken the gift of mother nature for granted. The campaign actively seeks individuals to take the pledge along with the kids broadcaster to protect nature and lists three commitments – planting a tree, discontinuing the use of plastic bags, and saving water.
The Nicktoons bring the message of #SochKaroUpgrade in a light hearted yet impactful manner through its films. The franchise is extensively promoting the campaign on-air and on digital with promos and through an array of activities to drive awareness on steps to bring about a change.
A popular doodle artist Woodledoodledesigns also did a series of graphic illustrations to drive the message to social media audiences. To extend support to this initiative, influencers and child celebrities including Riva Arora, Ruhaanika Dhawan, to name a few, will pose as eco warriors and take the #SochKaroUpgrade pledge.
Child-actor Dhawan, commented,” It is very important for everyone to have clean water and a green environment. Mother nature has been so kind to us in so many ways and now it is our turn to give it back. I have been constantly trying different ways to reuse plastic milk covers as plant pots and use the water that drains out from the air conditioner. In fact, I have been urging my friends to come forward and opt for ways to take action against climate change.”
Aakriti Sharma further added on the undying issue of climate change, “People across the world don’t realise how serious climate change really is and they take it very lightly. Now, that we learn about it in schools and also witness it when we see trees catching up fire due to global warming and the water level in oceans are increasing with every passing day; it’s becoming scarier and an issue to be spoken about. But our generation will be the one to hopefully correct all the wrongs that were being committed in the past. At home, we have switched to cloth or jute bags instead of one time use plastic bags and we urge everyone to take a step towards saving mother nature. We want people to know, just because climate change is not going to affect you in the future doesn’t mean it’s not going to affect ours. To contribute to this situation, I along with my friends and family will come forward and take a pledge to save mother earth.”

Nickelodeon unveils Children's Day campaign #KhulkeboloNickelodeon India has launched Children’s Day campaign – #Khulke Bolo – encouraging kids to be themselves and speak openly without any fear and filter.
As a part of the initiative, Nickelodeon has released its Children’s Day brand film which focusses on how children are untouched by the layers of social conditioning of do’s and don’ts and self-consciousness that burden the adults. The 30-second film starts off with a classroom scene where kids are busy drawing under the supervision of a teacher.
The film then moves to a modern art museum where the kids and the teacher are looking appreciatively at an abstract sculpture.
Conceptualised by the creative agency Scarecrow M&C Saatchi, the film is on-air across the Nickelodeon franchise and its social media platforms and is garnering phenomenal response from the audiences, the company said.
Nina Elavia Jaipuria – Hindi mass entertainment and Kids TV Network at Viacom18, said, “We at Nickelodeon keep children at the core of all that we do and on their special day, we want to celebrate kids with all their quirks and innocence. With this innovative campaign, we want to encourage and empower children to speak their mind openly and fearlessly. This Children’s day, Nickelodeon urges all to speak their mind and bring out the child within.”
The Children’s Day campaign will be promoted heavily on social media through Facebook and Instagram as well as YouTube. Nickelodeon has reached out to prominent influencers and mommy bloggers to spread the message of #khulkebolo.

Child stars Ruhaanika, Riva and Akriti rally for a green cause
Mumbai, Aug 15 (IANS) Child actor Ruhaanika Dhawan says it is very important for everyone to have clean water and a green environment, and that is why she always urges her friends to take action against climate change.
“It is very important for everyone to have clean water and a green environment. Mother Nature has been so kind to us in so many ways and now it is our turn to give it back,” said Ruhaanika, who is known for her role in the TV show, “Ye Hai Mohabbatein”.
“I have been constantly trying different ways to reuse plastic milk covers as plant pots and use the water that drains out from the air conditioner. In fact, I have been urging my friends to come forward and opt for ways to take action against climate change,” she added.
Child actress Riva Arora feels “we are being told about global warming in school and the thought is very scary”.
“Which is why I have been encouraging my friends and family to take small steps to protect nature like using cloth bags instead of plastic, and turning off the tap when not using, among other things,” added Riva, who was seen in films such as “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl”, “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and “Mom”.
To this, “Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala” child star Aakriti Sharma added: “People across the world don’t realise how serious climate change really is and they take it very lightly. Now, that we learn about it in schools and also witness it when we see trees catching up fire due to global warming and the water level in oceans are increasing with every passing day; it’s becoming scarier and an issue to be spoken about.”

'The Legend Of Korra' Star Janet Varney On Whether She'd Return To The Series
For those who are just getting into Avatar: The Last Airbender after it returned to Netflix earlier this summer, you may be interested to know its acclaimed follow-up series The Legend of Korra is also on Netflix for the very first time. Having debuted on Nickelodeon in 2012 and ended as a web series in 2014, The Legend of Korra follows the next Avatar in the cycle and is a very different show from Avatar, with a much darker tone and more mature themes. (One of the first bisexual relationships in a cartoon series appeared in Korra - Korrasami 4 eva!). But it’s definitely a show that every fan of ATLA should check out if they fell in love with the world of Aang and the gang.
And with The Legend of Korra finally on Netflix, there’s no excuse to not watch it, even if you've seen it before. It definitely has both its fans and its detractors, which is the pop culture norm when franchises change things up (ahem, Star Wars). But while we already know Avatar: The Last Airbender's future includes an upcoming live-action adaptation (sans its two creators), the future of Korra is a lot more uncertain.
CinemaBlend got a chance to speak to Korra’s voice actor, Janey Varney, and here’s what she had to say on her chances of voicing Korra again for TV:
"That’s a conversation I would be incredibly lucky to even have at all [but] I don’t think that will happen. One of the cardinal rules of staying sane in acting and in writing, and in pretty much anything else you do in this business, is 'Don’t ever wonder if something good will happen.' It’s better to live in the moment, so when your show gets cancelled, like, that’s okay. I basked in the wonderful glory that was the time that we had together."
Janet Varney, who can currently be found starring on IFC’s Fortune Rookie, actually already did voice Korra after the series ended, but it wasn’t on TV. Much like Avatar: The Last Airbender has comic book follow-up, as does The Legend of Korra, and Varney recently joined a few other voice actors from the show to perform live readings of the first graphic novel from the "Turf Wars" arc from Dark Horse Comics. The second trilogy, subtitled Ruins of the Empire, ended its run in February, and dealt with events concerning season 4 of The Legend of Korra. So maybe, hopefully, Ms. Varney will voice Korra again if they read excerpts from that collection like they did with Turf Wars.
But as for voicing Korra again on a TV show, Ms. Varney didn’t seem all that certain of the possibility, even though she would definitely be up for it again if the opportunity presented itself. Playing Korra is still a big part of her life after all, and she definitely feels like she connects with the character on a personal level. In her words:
"I’m cool with somebody starting out really flawed and young and immature, and not sure how to handle where they are in their lives, and not sure with who to ask for help, or when to ask for help. And so I love how messy Korra’s journey was, because it really hit home for me."
How “messy” Korra’s journey was was actually one of the reasons that some fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender aren’t fans of The Legend of Korra. As I mentioned earlier, Korra’s story is very different from Aang’s. The latter starts out not wanting to be the Avatar, while Korra starts out proud to take on the role. Throughout his journey, Aang learns how to step up to his role as an Avatar, while Korra’s trajectory forces her to learn humility, as well as how to survive through the trauma and stress she faces.
But in a lot of ways, these are the very things fans of the show cherish about Korra’s adventure. One common belief that Korra fans have when comparing the show to Avatar: The Last Airbender is that Aang was a human who learned to be the Avatar, while Korra was an Avatar who learned to be human. Whether this was the ultimate intention of the show’s creators is speculative but, now that it’s on Netflix, you can finally form an opinion for yourself while waiting to hear any future news about The Legend of Korra's future.
In the end, nobody’s really sure if fans who just got into Avatar will be receptive to Korra, given the differences. (For instance, you can find both in the kids section of Netflix, but Korra is rated TV-PG while A:TLA earned a TV-7,) But we'll soon find out since it's now available to stream on Netflix.
