JoJo Siwa Allegedly Swatted by the Paparazzi After Coming Out as Part of the LGBTQ+ Community
It’s been quite the weekend for 17-year-old YouTube megastar JoJo Siwa.
After first hinting and then explicitly coming out as gay in several social media posts — a courageous act carrying enormous cultural importance given her young following as a Nickelodeon icon — Siwa was reportedly swatted at her Los Angeles home over the weekend.
Swatting refers to a prank call to emergency services about a falsely dire situation, resulting in the arrival of a large number of officers to a particular address. It’s a potentially fatal prank that has been pulled by digital creators in the past, with Call Of Duty gamer Tyler Barriss currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for a swatting prank that resulted in a man’s death at the hands of police.
In a saved live stream clip on her videographer’s Instagram account, below, per BuzzFeed, Siwa explained that roughly 50 police officers arrived at her house on Sunday, whereupon Siwa and crew exited the residence with their hands up. Police explained that someone had called claiming an unknown dangerous situation at the home, and then, all of a sudden, paparazzi arrived from around the corner and began snapping photos, Siwa said.
“I feel bad because there was about 50 police at our house, and those police could’ve had a much better time spent somewhere else actually helping somebody, instead of dealing with a fake claim from paparazzi,” Siwa said.
Siwa first began coming out last week, when she shared a TikTok video of herself dancing to Lady Gaga’s gay anthem “Born This Way,” with rainbows on her sweatshirt and in her signature hair bow. She then tweeted on Friday that her cousin had gotten her a shirt reading "Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever." The next day, Siwa took to Instagram to thank fans for their support. In response to questions about how she identifies, Siwa declined to specify, stating that she was a member of the LGBTQ+ community and still discovering herself.
Thankfully, the majority of Siwa's fans have been showering JoJo with love and praise following her announcement.

James Corden Once Appeared on Nickelodeon UK's 'Renford Rejects'
When we see or hear James Corden's name, we think of the British actor and comedian's hit comedy Gavin & Stacy or his current hit, The Late Late Show. But did you know that he got his start on Nickelodeon?

Yep! One of Corden's earliest roles (his third credited role to be exact, according to the IMDb) was on Nickelodeon UK's hit football (soccer) themed comedy, Renford Rejects, which followed the lives of a group of teenagers who failed to get into their school football team, so they started their own five-a-side.
Corden only appeared in one episode, "Don Bruno", the second episode from the show's first series (or season) in 1998. In the episode, he portrays "Razor 1", one of the players in the Rejects' arch-rival team, the Razors.
Corden's character was a bit of a bully, who threatens faux-Italian Bruno di Gradi (aka Barry Grade, played by Grange Hill's Paul Parris). Momma mia!
Although Renford Rejects was a Nick UK show, the first season did air internationally, including on Nickelodeon Games & Sports (Nick GAS) and Nickelodeon Australia.
You can check out a young Corden in Renford Rejects below. Corden first appears around the 35 second mark!:
Unfortunately, Renford Rejects is currently off-air, and is not currently available on DVD or streaming services. Hopefully if Paramount+ comes to the U.K., we may see the Rejects again - and who knows, maybe a Renford Rejects reboot?

Nickelodeon's Noggin Finds its Place Amid Crowded Streaming Landscape
As the streaming landscape gets more crowded, the edutainment SVOD needs to stand out...not just against the competition, but against its parent company, too.
As ViacomCBS consolidates its streaming businesses, Noggin, Nickelodeon’s standalone edutainment SVOD service for preschoolers is carving out a place for itself as a complementary experience that blends tech and content to give its youngest viewers a unique way to connect with popular brands.
Following the ViacomCBS merger in 2019, the conglom has been concentrating its streaming efforts around Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), adding the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. libraries to the platform, and shuttering smaller streamer MTV Hits.
With Paramount+ set to launch later this year, other niche direct-to-consumer platforms—including NickHits and Comedy Central Now—may also be on the chopping block.
But Kristen Kane, Executive Vice President (EVP) of Noggin, isn’t worried. She’s confident that the preschool SVOD’s future is secure because it offers a lot to families as a separate product, including interactive content and a kid-friendly, walled-garden experience, which could be lost if it was integrated into Paramount+. She says Noggin’s long-term goal is to be supportive of the broader SVOD, offering educational content that leverages Nickelodeon’s popular brands.
It won’t be an easy task. Not only is Noggin competing in the wider universe of edutainment streamers, it also straddles the SVOD and interactive service worlds, and must meet the needs of families for both an entertainment and learning platform. Balancing those two focuses can be a challenge, as reflected by Noggin’s growth, which has been slow compared to some other family-friendly SVODs. As of Q2 2019, the app (which launched in 2015) had reached 2.5 million subscribers globally. Within the larger kids streaming world, popular brands like PAW Patrol and Dora the Explorer set it apart from competitors, like education-focused preschool SVOD Hopster (500,000 subscribers as of August 2020).
But within the ViacomCBS ecosystem, it hasn’t been able to reach the audience size of its sister services, like general entertainment AVOD Pluto TV (26.5 million subscribers as of last August). To help it compete, Noggin has a three-pronged strategy. It will focus on rapidly growing its slate of new shows, including Noggin Knows and Kinderwood, as well as Nickelodeon content and acquisitions; lean on Nick’s well-known characters with new videos that tackle trending topics like mindfulness; and partner with other organizations to draw in a larger co-viewing audience.
But it’s tech that differentiates Noggin from other streamers, and the long-term goal is to integrate more interactivity into the content to make it more engaging, Kane says. She has plans to build out even more ways for children to engage with the app (which already lets kids touch, speak and play along with videos), moving the interactivity beyond just mobile devices and onto every screen. Kane also sees potential in features like voice-enabled functionality, natural language processing and adaptive learning tech so the SVOD can enhance its educational value and better personalize its learning offerings for kids.
“We’ve seen substantial growth in our subscriber base, our engagement levels have doubled during the pandemic, and that has remained steady,” Kane told Kidscreen. “We plan to innovate by integrating our content and tech together to deepen kids’ relationships with these characters, and leverage that for their learning.”
The future of Noggin seems safe for now. Marc DeBevoise, ViacomCBS' former Chief Digital Officer and former President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ViacomCBS Digital revealed last November that ViacomCBS plans to keep Noggin operational due to its interactive elements.
