Did Nickelodeon Cover Trump’s 2nd Impeachment? | Fact Check | Nickelodeon

Did Nickelodeon Cover Trump’s 2nd Impeachment?

No senators were slimed in the making of this satire.

On Feb. 10, 2021, as U.S. Rep. Jamie Haskin and the other House impeachment managers laid out their case in an effort to show that U.S. President Donald Trump had incited an insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, a photograph started to circulate online that supposedly showed Nickelodeon’s coverage of the historic event.

While this may have raised a few sceptical eyebrows for some (for others it was likely an obvious joke from the start), the second picture posted by comedian Jesse McClaren made it clear that these images were created in jest. The second photo shows Trump’s lawyer Bruce Castor covered in green slime.

A very telling sign that the images are fake is that they use an older version of the Nickelodeon logo.

However, Nickelodeon is not providing live coverage of Trump’s second impeachment trial, and the network did not digitally edit SpongeBob SquarePants into the Senate chamber, and they did not release any of their signature green slime on any politicians. The graphics are from Nickelodeon's recent coverage of a NFL Wild Card game and CBS' "Nick-ified" Super Bowl highlights, where popular characters from the network and it's iconic green slime were super-imposed into the game using augmented reality (AR) to attract a younger audience.

Nickelodeon, being aimed towards kids, is not known as being a news network. However, they do occasionally produce segments related to current events, and has covered political events in the past.

For more than two decades starting in 1992, Nickelodeon aired a Emmy-winning program called Nick News with Linda Ellerbee that covered a wide range of current affairs and topics, including sexism, global warming, hate crimes, being gay, and presidential elections. The original Nick News went off the air in 2015, when host Linda Ellerbee retired. However, the network rebooted Nick News as a multi-platform series in 2020, and has produced Nick News specials to talk to kids about racism (hosted by Alicia Keys) and for the network's Kids Pick The President initiative (hosted by Nick alum Keke Palmer, True Jackson, VP), as well as news segments for the network's social media channels.

In January 2021, Nickelodeon produced two segments related to Trump’s second impeachment. The first covered the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6:

The second covered Trump’s impeachment:

The original Nick News received three Peabody Awards, including a personal award given to Ellerbee for explaining the impeachment of President Clinton to kids.

During Nickelodeon's "Kids' Vote" as part of Kids Pick the President 2020, in which kids were allowed to cast their virtual ballots on who they think should be the next president, the network detected cheating, when threads on right-wing online forums began discussing corrupting the Kids Pick the President site with fraudulent votes. Subsequently, more than 130,000 bot-generated votes were detected. Nickelodeon utilized a voter certification tool to identify these votes and to remove them, ensuring that only individually placed votes counted toward the total.

'Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows' Intro Teases Return of Iconic Character

That's SarDO! No mister; accent on the doh!

The opening titles for Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows tease the return of an iconic character from the original '90s Are You Afraid of the Dark? series!

Appearing at approximately 15 seconds into the intro, fans can spot a shop sign for Sardo's Magic Mansion, which, in the original '90s series, was owned by the mysterious and mischievous Sardo!

It's currently unknown what role Sardo will have in Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows, if any - it could just be an Easter Egg for long time fans of the series. however, we do know that one of the cast of the season season of the revival, Seth (Dominic Mariche) likes magic, and another scene from the intro teases a Ouija board.

One of the more significant recurring characters of the original series, Sardo, owner of "Sardo's Magic Mansion" (a magic shop). He would often attempt to sell a character a "prized" item, succeeding almost every single time. He often had items in his shop that contained real properties of magic, yet did not know until it was revealed in the story.

Richard M. Dumont as Sardo.

Additionally, when selling someone an item, he would often ask a rather high price. The main character would mention how much money they had, and Sardo would grab the money saying, "But I'm losing on the deal." Although he rarely got what he wanted, he would often end up helping the characters, often unintentionally.

Appearing in eight episodes, including "The Tale of the Super Specs," he mainly featured in Gary's (Ross Hull) stories, although in the later seasons, he appeared in two of Tucker's (Daniel DeSanto) and one of David's (Nathaniel Moreau).

One of the most memorable recurring jokes in the series occurred when someone would address him as "Mr. Sardo." He would then get irritated and exclaim: "That's SarDO! No mister; accent on the doh!"

In the original series, Sardo was portrayed by Canadian actor Richard M. Dumont. However, it's currently unknown whether Dumont will be reprising his fan-favorite role for season two of the revival.

Update (2/12) - In "Curse of the Shadows", Sardo is played by Ryan Beil.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows, the second season of Nickelodeon's beloved horror anthology series based on the '90s kids' cult classic, will premiere on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, with new episodes of the six-part limited series airing every Friday night.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows follows an all-new Midnight Society group of kids who learn of the terrifying curse cast over their small seaside town, and are haunted by a mysterious creature known as the Shadowman. In the just-released trailer, viewers are introduced to the new Midnight Society members and get a glimpse at the horrors that await them in the shadows.

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Luke, played by Bryce Gheisar (The AstronautsWonder); Jai, played by Arjun Athalye; Hanna, played by Beatrice Kitsos (Child's PlayiZombie); Gabby, played by Malia Baker (The Baby-Sitters Club); Seth, played by Dominic Mariche (The Christmas Yule BlogA Gift to Cherish); and Connor, played by Parker Queenan (Party of FiveAndi Mack).

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows is produced by ACE Entertainment (To All The Boys I've Loved BeforeThe Perfect Date) with ACE founder Matt Kaplan and Spencer Berman serving as executive producers and Paul Kim as co-executive producer. Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy IslandTruth or Dare) serves as executive producer and the primary director for the series. JT Billings (Beware That GirlCharming) serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Production of Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content; and Zack Olin, Senior Vice President, Live Action. Brian Banks serves as Nickelodeon's Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

AMMF's ‘Cielito Lindo’ Mariachi Band Faces Eviction — But Neighbors Step Up To Help

Chicagoans have already raised nearly $5,000 for the family. "It almost doesn’t feel real," Juan Lucero said.

The Lucero family, who live in Ravenswood, make up "Cielito Lindo," a modern Mariachi band in Chicago.

RAVENSWOOD, Chicago — Chicagoans are stepping up to help the Luceros, the city’s “von Trapp” musical family, from being evicted.

As of Wednesday (Jan. 13) morning, 20 people had donated $4,750, but organizers hope to raise $30,000. The money will help the Luceros cover six months of unpaid back rent as well as future rent until they can begin earning regular income again, as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has dealt a major blow to their work.

The Luceros — father Juan, mother Susy and seven children — make up Cielilto Lindo, a mariachi folk band that has performed everywhere from Alcala’s Western Wear in West Town to Nickelodeon's stage in Los Angelos.

But in March, COVID-19 led to the cancellation of events and closing of theaters, cutting the family’s regular income by nearly half and imperiling their home.

The fundraiser organizer, Bob Farster, is a neighbor of the Luceros in Ravenswood. The family is very grateful to Farster and all the supporters who have donated thus far, Juan Lucero said.

“It almost doesn’t feel real,” he told Block Club Chicago. “Leaving Chicago is not an option. We’ve been here five years. Even with the pandemic, there’s nowhere else we want to be … . There’s nowhere else we can be ourselves.”

Cielito Lindo, which means “beautiful heaven” in Spanish, performs traditional Mexican music. The family’s seven children range in age from 7 to 18, with all living at home.

The family moved to Chicago from New Mexico five years ago. Susy Lucero grew up in Logan Square and Avondale, and the family felt they’d find more success as musicians in the city. They sold their house in New Mexico and moved all seven of their children to Lincoln Square. They eventually moved into their current home in Ravenswood.

Since moving to Chicago, the Luceros’ rise to fame has been rapid.

The family has performed at Bulls games, galas, street festivals and on television programs, including Nickelodeon's America’s Most Musical Family (under the name Lucero Garcia). They are routinely booked to perform at weddings, quinceañeras, birthday parties and other community events. Downtown businesses often book the band, too.

“I feel definitely Chicago … all of us as individuals, we can be ourselves here,” Lucero said. “It’s really easy to find your niche here in Chicago and be supported, find resources to be successful.”

But during the pandemic, the Luceros have pivoted to virtual performances. On Wednesday morning, hours after the GoFundMe was created, the family drove to the United Center, where they taped two performances of the National Anthem for upcoming Bulls events.

Zoom-based serenades begin at $50. The family performed several outdoor socially-distanced concerts this summer. A Venmo “tip jar” was established under the name @Juan-Lucero-77.

While every dollar helps, this income pales in comparison to what the family typically earns in a year, Lucero said.

“We’re grateful that we have some of our business left and some income left,” he said. “But unfortunately, as musicians and especially … as musical families go, it’s not enough. We were basically barely making it beforehand.”

Going into 2020, the family had finally gotten to a place where they could begin saving for a home. But with the pandemic, that money started going straight to bills, Lucero said.

If the Luceros are evicted, nine people who are dedicated to helping Chicago will be without a home, Farster wrote on the online fundraiser.

“After generously spreading joy and lifting people up through their music for years, now, the family — which has been likened to the von Trapps — is left needing help,” Farster said. “We can’t stand by and let this happen to this remarkable family.

“Through our years of friendship, I can honestly say that these are the nicest people you will ever meet. The kids are so polite, so smart and so hardworking. The parents are kind, generous, talented and, right now, uncertain about what’s next.”

Update (2/12) - From Block Club Chicago:

Chicagoans Raise $64,750 To Save Cielito Lindo Mariachi Family From Eviction: ‘It Still Feels Surreal’

"To know that there are lots and lots of people out there that are so generous ... that gives you hope that you really can get through this year."

RAVENSWOOD — The Luceros, Chicago’s “von Trapp” musical family, said they are grateful for the love and support they’ve received during a fundraiser to keep them from being evicted.

When Block Club initially reported on the fundraiser last month, 20 people had donated $4,750 toward the campaign. But more than $64,000 has been raised as of Wednesday.

The money will cover six months of unpaid back rent and has secured several months of future rent for the family, who lost a majority of their income due to the pandemic.

“A lot of people that I know and that I don’t know are giving so much,” said Maya Lucero, 10, who sings and plays maracas for the family band. “And not just in money, in other ways, too. … It’s just so nice to have something lighten up your year. Hopefully this can lighten up everybody’s year, too. To know that there are lots and lots of people out there that are so generous … that gives you hope that you really can get through this year.”

The Luceros — father Juan, mother Susy and seven children — make up Cielilto Lindo, a mariachi folk band that has performed everywhere from Alcala’s Western Wear in West Town to Nickelodeon’s stage in Los Angeles.

But in March, COVID-19 led to the cancellation of events and closing of theaters, cutting the family’s regular income by nearly half and imperiling their home.

The fundraiser organizer, Bob Farster, is a neighbor of the Luceros in Ravenswood.

The news coverage of the GoFundMe didn’t just bring in donations, Juan Lucero said. One neighbor offered an empty unit in his apartment building to the family if they needed a place to stay. Another offered their car.

“It still feels surreal,” Lucero said. “A lot of people had an emotional reaction to the story. That’s pretty cool.”

Many have signed up for Cielito Lindo’s virtual services. The family upgraded their equipment to provide better streaming technology.

“We got a flood of calls. We’re still getting calls, way more than we would otherwise,” Lucero said. “That’s really helped out the business, doing more virtual services.”

Facing eviction made Lucero realize how many neighbors could be on the cusp of homelessness. The pandemic significantly affected the performing arts community, as venues and theaters are closed and events have been canceled.

Lucero said he’d like to encourage more Chicagoans to check in on their neighbors and see if they’re doing alright.

He also hoped those who are struggling, especially other artists and performers, can lean on their neighbors for support.

“Let their community know. Don’t be shy. … Many of us are going through these things,” he said. “It’s wonderful that the people who can help are reaching out to help.”
