How Nickelodeon Plans to Stock Up on New ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ Content

“We’re going to have this great flywheel of content going back and forth,” Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins told TheWrap.

Disney+ has Marvel and Star Wars. HBO Max has DC Comics and a whole bunch of Warner Bros. film premieres. To crash the streaming party, Paramount+ is bringing … SpongeBob SquarePants?

Paramount+, ViacomCBS’ beefed-up version of CBS All Access, debuted March 4 with not one but two projects based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the brand’s second feature adaptation; and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, the first spinoff TV series that follows SpongeBob and his friends during their summer camp days.

Brian Robbins, president of Nickelodeon, SpongeBob’s longtime home, spoke to TheWrap about the multiplatform play for the anthropomorphic sea sponge and his fellow underwater friends: “We’re fortunate enough to be able to feed both mouths in this case. That’s just one example of how our strategy unfolds.”

Along with Sponge on the Run and Kamp Koral, Nickelodeon is developing a second spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, starring Bill Fagerbakke’s Patrick Star character for its own channel.

Kamp Koral was initially developed for Nickelodeon, before ViacomCBS’ Paramount+ plans were known. That, along with fellow animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, where then shuffled over to the new streaming service to help it bulk up to compete with fellow newcomers Disney+ and HBO Max.

Robbins said the decision was less about the idea that Kamp Koral works better on a streaming service, and more about how they could give Paramount+ and the SpongeBob franchise a massive jolt.

“We have a new SpongeBob spin off, actually the first ever spin off after all these years, Kamp Koral, that debuted on Paramount+ last week. At the same time, the Sponge on the Run theatrical debuted on Paramount+. And for the first time ever, you had the entire library of SpongeBob available on demand on a streaming service. So we looked at that as this giant moment,” Robbins said. “And it’s paid off. The consumption has been great for all of those properties on the platform since launch last week.”

The decision to put the Patrick Star spinoff of Nickelodeon, Robbins said, is part of windowing strategy at ViacomCBS. Nickelodeon will premiere the first season of Kamp Koral that is currently streaming on Paramount+ this fall, which will coincide with the second season of Kamp Koral on the streaming service. On the other end, after the Patrick Star series finishes its run on Nickelodeon, it will become available on Paramount+.

“We’re going to have this great flywheel of content going back and forth,” Robbins said. “The consumption on the platforms are different.”

SpongeBob is not the only franchise that Nick has in is stable. They’re also developing a revival of popular ’90s cartoon Rugrats that will premiere this spring on Paramount+ (and presumably have a run on Nickelodeon sometime later). Last month, Nick announced that Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators behind the network’s beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender, are returning to the company to launch Avatar Studios, a new division that will produce animated projects within the franchise.

The studio’s first project will be a film set within the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and sequel series Legend of Korra. Multiple series are also planned.

“[It] has just grown immensely since it went off the air years ago, and the love for this franchise is beyond,” Robbins said. “Now we have the original creators back, we’re about to blow it out.”

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’: Nickelodeon Planning Multiple Animated Series & Films as Part of Franchise Expansion

Nickelodeon last month announced the launch of Avatar Studios, a division designed to create original Avatar: The Last Airbender content spanning animated series and movies set in the franchise’s world. The first project of the studio, led by the original series’ creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is an animated theatrical film that is set to start production later this year.

In an interview with Deadline tied to the Nickelodeon upfront presentation, the network president Brian Robbins lifted the veil a bit on the plans for the franchise beyond the first feature announced at the ViacomCBS Streaming Event presentation.

“We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe,” he said. “Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.”

The new series will join the two existing Avatar animated series, Nickelodeon’s 2005 Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, which have reached a new generation of young fans through streaming on Paramount+ and Netflix.

Netflix has a new original live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series coming up, done without the involvement of DiMartino and Konietzko.

The deal for that series was made before Robbins joined Nickelodeon, and he hinted that most projects through the Avatar Studios would likely remain within the ViacomCBS ecosystem, with Paramount+ and Nickelodeon and primary destinations. (The studio also is designed to supply third-party platforms and create movies for theatrical release.)

“We are excited about filling our own platforms today,” he said. “We will strategically license context to other places for different reasons but mostly our focus is on filling our own platforms starting with linear TV.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired for three seasons, follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation. The Legend of Korra launched on Nickelodeon in 2012 and ran for four seasons.

The property was subsequently translated into a ongoing graphic novel series written by TV series co-creator DiMartino and a live-action feature film starring Dev Patel and directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Brian Robbins Hints At Potential 'PAW Patrol' Spinoffs

Ryder and his PAW Patrol could be adding to the search and rescue team.

Fresh from spinning off its hit animated underwater series SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon boss Brian Robbins has hinted that the canine family could be next in line for an expansion.

Robbins, who is President, ViacomCBS Kids & Family, told Deadline that it was “possible” that they could expand the kids’ franchise, on top of upcoming theatrical movie PAW Patrol: The Movie, which is set for an August premiere.

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” he said. “Let’s see how this film does.”

Some have wondered whether there could be a feline-based spinoff or a hybrid live-action version of the show, which was recently renewed for an ninth season. The series recently added its first feline heroine, Wild Cat, as part of its Moto Pups theme.

The show, which focuses on Ryder, a boy who leads a crew of search and rescue dogs as they work to protect the shoreside community of Adventure Bay, launched in 2013 and has run for over 170 episodes.

Created by Bob The Builder creator Keith Chapman, it is produced by Spin Master Entertainment and animation company Guru Studio.

PAW Patrol is the biggest preschool show in the world, it definitely has legs,” said Robbins.  “There’s no preschool franchise bigger from a TV ratings standpoint, from a consumer products standpoint, and hopefully one day when we go back to normal a live entertainment standpoint. It is one of our most prized possessions and we’re excited about the theatrical feature, we think that’s going to take the show to a new level. When we think of franchises, PAW Patrol is right up there with SpongeBob for us.”

Would you like to see PAW Patrol spun off? If so, what kind of spin-off would you like to see? Let me know in the comments!

BURBANK, Calif.–March 18, 2021–Nickelodeon is continuing to fuel its ever-expanding content slate with the greenlight of two new creator-driven 2D-animated series--ZJ Sparkleton (working title) for Kids 6-11 and The Hamster Show (working title) for preschoolers. Buddy comedy ZJ Sparkleton (26 half-hour episodes) follows creative vlogger Ruby and her goofy alien best friend ZJ Sparkleton as they film their daily mishaps and adventures around their town. The Hamster Show (26 half-hour episodes) centers on a motley crew of hamsters that work together to protect their owner, who they mistake as their King and beloved ruler of their elaborate tubed kingdom. Both ZJ Sparkleton and The Hamster Show are produced by Nelvana, a world-leading international producer, distributor and licensor of children’s animated and live-action content, and slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. in 2022, with international markets to follow.

ZJ Sparkleton and The Hamster Show are great additions to Nickelodeon’s growing slate of new content because friendship, humor and relatable characters are at the core,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “The series creators, Brian Morante and Zach Smith, have a history of bringing unique stories to life at Nickelodeon and we can’t wait to dive in with our production partners at Nelvana on these originals.”

“Nelvana is excited to build upon our partnership with Nickelodeon and contribute to their massive animation pipeline with new IP for a global audience,” Pam Westman, President, Nelvana. “With lovable characters and hilarious storylines, ZJ Sparkleton and The Hamster Show are two titles that we look forward to adding to our production slate.”

In ZJ Sparkleton, quirky 10-year-old vlogger Ruby discovers her only video channel follower is a tail-zapping space alien from the planet Pudge named ZJ Sparkleton, and they quickly become best friends. Along with their friend Earl, a talking con-man squirrel, Ruby teaches ZJ about her version of Earth, while ZJ learns to control his unpredictable powers.

In The Hamster Show, 8-year-old Harry is the proud owner of a crew of hamsters and the builder of their detailed and expansive tubed home. Little does Harry know that his furry friends are constantly watching him, believing that Harry is their King and they are his heroic protectors. Together, the hamsters explore their kingdom, comedically misunderstanding the human world and braving “royal missions,” such as saving King Harry from daily doom, granting his wishes and keeping his life running smoothly.

ZJ Sparkleton and The Hamster Show are taking their place alongside other series from Nickelodeon’s animated content pipeline--the largest in its history to ever be produced. Titles in the forthcoming slate include: Star Trek: Prodigy, Rugrats, Middlemost Post, Baby Shark’s Big Show!, The Smurfs, The Patrick Star Show, Big Nate, The Tiny Chef Show (working title) and more.

ZJ Sparkleton is created by Brian Morante (Penguins of Madagascar, Breadwinners, SpongeBob SquarePants). Mike Geiger (3 Amigonauts, Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong) is the director and Lynne Warner (Corn & Peg, The Most Magnificent Thing) is the supervising producer for Nelvana. Kari Kim, Vice President, Animation Development, Nickelodeon; Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President, Animation Development, Nickelodeon; and Conrad Montgomery, Vice President, Current Series Animation, Nickelodeon, are overseeing production of the series for Nickelodeon.

The Hamster Show is created by Zach Smith (Baby Shark’s Big Show!). Jason Groh (Go Away, Unicorn!, Wishfart) is the director and Lynne Warner (Corn & Peg, The Most Magnificent Thing) is the supervising producer for Nelvana. Eryk Casemiro, Senior Vice President, Nickelodeon Preschool, is overseeing production of the series for Nickelodeon.
