Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Casts Sokka's Despised Rival, Hahn

A new report reveals the casting choice for Sokka's Water Tribe rival in Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Netflix's upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation has cast a number of major characters that helped shape Book 1 of the animated series, and even though filming has officially wrapped, casting news is still being revealed. The most recent casting news reveals those characters include Sokka's Northern Water Tribe rival.

According to Avatar News, Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender will feature Indigenous Cree and Métis actor Joel Oulette as the Water Tribe warrior Hahn. Fans will recognize the character as the arrogant teenage warrior who was betrothed to Princess Yue and attempted to take on Admiral Zhao during the Fire Nation's assault on the Northern Water Tribe.

It was previously reported Princess Yue will be played by Prey star and Sioux actor Amber Midthunder. In Nickelodeon's animated series, Yue aided Aang and Katara in protecting the Moon Spirit, with the young princess ultimately giving her life to restore the spirit after Zhao attempts to slay its mortal form. Yue made several subsequent appearances throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender's three seasons as an avatar of the Moon Spirit.

When it comes to the Northern Water Tribe, Oulette and Midthunder join actor A. Martinez, who plays Master Pakku. The three will appear alongside Gordon Cormier, who plays Avatar Aang; Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung as Iroh and Daniel Dae Kim as series villain Fire Lord Ozai.

What Do We Know About Netflix's Avatar?

Details concerning the live-action show are scarce. However, Sun-Hyung previously teased the mature tone of the adaptation. He explained, "Let's be frank: the first season of the animated series was geared toward little kids, but as the books went on, the themes became way more mature... And you still have that whimsical quality, but the themes were so much deeper and the character arcs were so much more mature. That quality is what they're trying to bring into the first season."

On top of that, it has been speculated the roles of certain characters will be expanded, such as Avatar Kuruk, who was only briefly alluded to in Book 1 of the animated series and didn't make a full appearance in the series until Book 3. This expanded role has not yet been confirmed by Netflix or the show's creators.

Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender will have a first season comprised of eight hour-long episodes. No release date has yet been announced.

The Ronin-verse Expands in Upcoming IDW Miniseries 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—The Lost Years'

The Ronin-verse Expands in Upcoming IDW Miniseries Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—The Lost Years

TMNT Creator Kevin Eastman and Co-Writer
Tom Waltz Follow Up Their Wildly Popular
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
with Five-Issue Encore Miniseries
Last Ronin–The Lost Years

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 23, 2022) – With over 840,000 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin issues in print and the newly released hardcover collection currently flying off shelves, IDW in partnership with Paramount Consumer Products is thrilled to announce a follow-up to the popular comic book miniseries and graphic novel collection, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin–The Lost Years, debuting in November 2022. Written by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman and series veteran Tom Waltz and illustrated by SL Gallant and returning artist Ben Bishop, Lost Years digs deeper into the world of the Ronin-verse, adding breadth and scope to one of TMNT’s most ravenously devoured, widely beloved, and critically acclaimed entries of all time.

“Continuing to expand on an idea Peter Laird and I had thirty-five years ago with this incredible creative team has been the adventure of a lifetime,” says Eastman. “To continue exploring and telling stories within the Last Ronin universe couldn’t possibly be more exciting for me. I'm so thrilled we get to stay and play here for a while and I can't wait to share everything we have planned. Buckle up, TMNT fans! We've got two turtle universes that are both about to get seriously awesome!"

“When Kevin Eastman and I first began collaborating on TMNT: The Last Ronin, we were building on a very solid foundation,” says Waltz. “We had the basic outline for the story that Kevin and Peter Laird had written back in 1987, which provided a fantastic roadmap for the story we wanted to tell. But as time passed, we began to realize that Last Ronin’s story was so much bigger than we had originally anticipated–past, present, and future. There’s so much more about this world that we still want to share with our fans. TMNT: The Last Ronin–The Lost Years represents the first expansion of what we now fondly call the ‘Ronin-verse.’ It offers our many loyal readers a much more detailed look at the Ronin’s past, as well as sharing a glimpse of an exciting future for the many allies he’s been forced to leave behind.”

“It’s all very top secret at the moment,” Bishop confides, “but I will say this—believe it or not, even more so than in the original Last Ronin series, the stuff I get to draw in Lost Years is an old-school TMNT kid’s wildest dream come true! I’m so excited to get the gang back together again so we can expand even more on this world we’ve been building—not only in Last Ronin, but in the TMNT universe as a whole,” says Bishop.

“Kevin, Tom, and Ben set big expectations with The Last Ronin, but that was only the beginning,” says editor Charles Beacham. “With Lost Years we’re going bigger, digging deeper, and giving fans more of what they didn’t even know they wanted. This is the start of an all-new chapter for TMNT and you won’t want to miss it.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—The Lost Years #1 will be available in stores with three cover variants for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by Kevin Eastman and Ben Bishop, Cover B by SL Gallant, and a retailer incentive edition by Mike Deodato.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin' Hardcover Attains Coveted New York Times Bestseller Status

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin Hardcover Attains Coveted New York Times Bestseller Status

IDW Publishing Makes Extraordinary Order for
100K More Copies, With Whopping Initial 60K
Print Run Expected to Sell Out
After Only Six Weeks

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 19, 2022) – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, the heartrending revenge story of the last surviving Ninja Turtle, continues its unparalleled trajectory of success! IDW, in partnership with Paramount Consumer Producers, announced today that its hardcover collection, originally released in July, has made the New York Times bestseller list and is tracking for a complete sell-out of its ambitious 60,000-unit print run within its first six weeks of availability.

For those concerned about getting their hands on the biggest graphic novel release of 2022, never fear! In an unprecedented move by a comic book publisher, IDW has ordered a massive new printing of the hardcover to the tune of 100,000 units, with the first wave of these freshly printed beauties arriving in mid-September.

Springing from a lost 1987 storyline by TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, The Last Ronin tells the story of a sole, shrouded Turtle in a dark possible future, undertaking a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends. The kinetic layouts from Eastman, atmospheric illustrations from Isaac and Esau Escorza and Ben Bishop, a thrilling script full of surprises from longtime TMNT scribe Tom Waltz, and bold hues from colorist Luis Antonio Delgado instantly resonated with fans and critics alike. Debuting in October 2020 as a quarterly periodical in a prestige oversized format, The Last Ronin took the comic world by storm, eventually leading to over 840,000 units of the individual comic books in print and adaptations to action figures and statues.

“When Kevin first came to me with the idea of adapting his and Peter’s 1987 outline into what became The Last Ronin, I was pretty sure our story had the kind of evergreen legs necessary to be an extremely popular addition to the long-running and multi-faceted TMNT lore. But I never anticipated the immense sales and critical success it would generate,” says Waltz. “Its popularity has already gone far above and beyond my initial expectations, and I count myself lucky to have been able to be a part of the amazing team that brought it all together for the many fans and retailers who have so quickly and consistently embraced the Ronin-verse. And the craziest thing of all is that we’re just getting started!”

Spurred by the extraordinary performance of The Last Ronin, IDW recently announced a prequel miniseries, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin–The Lost Years, with its debut issue slated for a December release. Reuniting Eastman, Waltz, and Bishop, and adding artist SL Gallant to the roster, The Lost Years digs deeper into the world of the Ronin-verse, adding breadth and scope to one of TMNT’s most ravenously devoured entries of all time.

“From the very start, The Last Ronin has consistently exceeded expectations,” says publisher Nachie Marsham. “Its gripping concept unearthed after three decades, the passion and mastery of craft as executed by the entire creative team, the unwavering faith of IDW staff and our partners at Nickelodeon in the project, the unbridled intensity of fans and heartfelt support of retailers, the universal acclaim from critics—it’s been a joy to watch The Last Ronin unfold, and I’m looking forward to even more readers getting the chance to dive into this story and see what the excitement’s all about for themselves!”
