Former Chuck E. Cheese Owner May Buy Paramount Owner National Amusements

Earlier this month, we learned that Warner Bros. Discovery and Skydance Media are both in talks to buy a majority control of Paramount. Now, the New York Post has reported that Shari Redstone is launching a formal auction of National Amusements, the holding company of Paramount Global.

With the news of the auction, Apollo Global Management is reportedly one of the massive companies that is interested in placing a bid to buy National Amusements, according to Bloomberg. Apollo is not new to owning media companies as it once AMC Theaters back in the early 2000s. It was also owner of Chuck E. Cheese’s until 2020, along with 100s of other companies.

Currently, Paramount Global is controlled by media executive Shari Redstone through her Notional Amusements company. Redstone, who controls National Amusements, which owns 77% of Paramount’s voting shares, reportedly plans to sell the company at auction. Selling this share will give the new owner control over Paramount.

The talks are still in the early stages for both companies, and they may now have to deal with multiple investment firms, according to the report from the New York Post. This comes as Warner Bros. Discovery is also interested in purchasing Paramount. Last month, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met to talk about a possible merger.

Talks with Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery are both in the early phases and could easily fall apart, especially with investment firms now possibly driving up the price of Paramount. No date for an auction has been revealed, but bankers have reportedly started the process of sharing details about Paramount with potential bidders.

Any new owner of National Amusements would control Paramount’s cable TV networks, which include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV, streaming service Paramount+, and multiple movie theaters.

Jodie: First Look at 'Daria' Spin-Off's Logo

Comedy Central announced back in August 2020 that it had commissioned Jodie, a spin-off film based on Daria starring Tracee Ellis Ross, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount Global to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South Park. Although not much has been said about the new movie since the original announcement, it looks like that's all about to change!

Paramount Global, the parent company of Comedy Central, has started to apply for trademarks for the film with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including for "Education, entertainment, sporting and cultural services" and "Clothing; footwear; headgear", the latter giving us a first look at the Jodie logo!:

Comedy Central announced that it had commissioned a Daria spin-off Jodie (previously titled Daria & Jodie), starring Tracee Ellis Ross, along with a reimagining of Nickelodeon's The Ren & Stimpy Show and a reboot of MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge, as part of the network tapping into IP across Paramount Global (then called ViacomCBS) to build an original animated slate of adult comedy around stalwart South Park. The project was originally announced as a series, however, on May 16, 2022, Variety revealed that the series had been reworked into a feature length film. The full main cast and their respective voice actors were revealed in the same piece. This revealed that the characters of Brittany Taylor and Mack Mackenzie will return to appear in the film, though voiced by Arden Myrin and William Jackson Harper instead of Janie Mertz and Amir Williams, respectively.

"We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio," Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, shared in a statement back in 2020 when the news was first announced. "Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation, including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Clone High, as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations."

In the ultimate sports and pop culture crossover event, Nickelodeon and CBS Sports will be bringing Super Bowl LVIII to Bikini Bottom, the iconic undersea home to SpongeBob SquarePants, for a kids and family-centric, surprise-filled special presentation of the game.

In the first-ever Super Bowl alternate telecast, SpongeBob SquarePants (voiced by Tom Kenny) and Patrick Star (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke), the newest additions to the Nickelodeon booth, will join CBS Sports analyst Nate Burleson and play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle to call the game. Sandy Cheeks (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence) will make her sideline reporting debut, while Larry the Lobster (voiced by Mr. Lawrence) provides live commentary, and Dora the Explorer (voiced by Diana Zermeño) and Boots (voiced by Asher Colton Spence) help explain penalty calls during the game. NFL Slimetime's Young Dylan and Dylan Schefter will also report live from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Additional details on the Nickelodeon Super Bowl telecast including programming and production will be revealed later.

Sean McManus and Harold Bryant serve as executive producers of THE NFL ON CBS, and CBS Sports' Shawn Robbins is coordinating producer of the games.
