As part of their on-going From the Vault digital series, Nickelodeon has treated fans of SpongeBob SquarePants by uploading a very special bit of lost media from the beloved animated series to the official SpongeBob social media pages: SpongeBob (Re-Hydrated)!, complete with its original audio!
Not to be confused with the recent video game, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, SpongeBob (Re-Hydrated) is a SpongeBob SquarePants Nicktoons short that originally made its debut in 2003. In this short, SpongeBob fights an army of Patrick clones in a parody of The Matrix Reloaded.
The short begins with streams of green code falling across a black screen. The words "He Is... the One" appear. Numbers start to band together to form SpongeBob, who is dressed as Neo from The Matrix franchise, also known as "the One" in the movies. Clones of Patrick, dressed like Agent Smith, open a metal door and start running toward SpongeBob. He spins on a bo staff to defeat the Patrick clones, then the logo of SpongeBob (Re-Hydrated) appears. The short ends with SpongeBob jumping toward the screen at a fast pace.
The animated short was used as part of Nicktoons' on-air continuity in 2003, when The Matrix Reloaded was popular and playing in theaters. Goopy Rossi, a longtime Nickelodeon animator best known for his work on the Nick Jr. show Blue's Clues and the Nickelodeon Movies feature film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, directed the animation for the short at Nickelodeon Digital in New York City while Frank Czuchan was Nickelodeon's brand creative vice president. The audio of SpongeBob yelling was recycled from "The Fry Cook Games".
Following its original run, a 2004 commercial titled "Nicktoons: Only in Digital," which aired on Nickelodeon's various sister networks to advertise the separate Nicktoons channel, featured a brief clip from the short.
Keanu Reeves, who played Neo in The Matrix movies, would later guest star as Sage in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.
