Classic NickToon Character Was Removed by Nickelodeon For Being “Too Weird”

Lana Vail and Arnold Shortman | Hey Arnold!
Paramount

In the history of Nickelodeon’s original animated universes, referred to as “NickToons,” there have been some downright bizarre faces that have made up the cable network’s roster. Cat Dog, Ren & Stimpy, Invader Zim, The Angry Beavers, and SpongeBob SquarePants are strange enough on their own, but there is one Nicktoon that didn’t last long on the network. During the run of Hey Arnold!, there was one character that appeared during the earlier episodes of the animated series, but would eventually be nixed, according to the creator of the beloved franchise. Needless to say, the story behind the character known as Lana Vail is a strange one.

In a resurfaced interview, Hey Arnold! Creator Craig Bartlett discussed the long-lost character Lana [Vail], who made Arnold pretty uncomfortable. Earlier in the series, Lana was presented as a member of Arnold’s boarding house, created to be a foil to the titular character. Specifically, Lana was slated to make fun of Arnold and “make him feel uncomfortable on purpose” in some scenes that might have made the audience just as uneasy as Arnold himself. Lana did appear in the series sparingly, often seen in the background, but was only given one line. Specifically, she appeared in the show’s sixth episode, asking Arnold to turn on the air conditioning. Needless to say, the original plans had been quickly put to bed by the time the show aired.

###

Note: Bartlett's exact words are no longer available, and it is unknown if Lana Vail was intended to be outright predatory or uncomfortably friendly.

Gary Sinise Embraces His Inner Couch Potato for New Pluto TV Ad Campaign

In Pluto TV's latest ad campaign by Haymaker, the CSI: NY and Forrest Gump star slips into a spud suit to rave about the free ad-supported streaming service to show that binge-watching greatness comes free — no strings (or fries) attached.

Gary Sinise as a Couch Potato for Pluto TV Advertising Campaign

Pluto TV, the free ad-supported streaming platform, has enlisted actor Gary Sinise for its latest creative campaign, ‘Proud Couch Potato.’

Known for his iconic roles as Detective Mac Taylor in CSI: NY and Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump, Sinise is seen stepping into an entirely new role — literally becoming a couch potato.

In collaboration with the creative agency Haymaker, the campaign highlights Pluto TV’s most popular genres: reality TV and crime dramas. With hits like Survivor, Real Housewives, Jersey Shore, CSI, Criminal Minds and NCIS, these genres have become the platform’s top performers.

To showcase these offerings, Sinise is seen in the ads dressed as a literal potato, surrounded by fans in similar garb. The first commercial, ‘Crime Never Pays. Neither do you,’ debuted during a New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys game in September. Sinise, dressed as a potato, stands alongside CSI: NY fans in full potato costumes as they gush about the show’s most exciting moments.

Watch CSI: NY (starring the one and only Gary Sinese), Blue Bloods, NCIS, Criminal Minds, S.W.A.T., Tracker, and so much more all for free on Pluto TV! Stream now. Pay never.

The second spot, ‘Your money’s no good here,’ features fans — again in potato suits — sharing their favorite Pluto TV shows and movies, from The Godfather to Inkmaster. Sinise cheekily wraps up the ad by saying, “Forrest Gump, because, come on,” a wink at his own iconic role.

Watch 1000s of Movies & TV Shows all for FREE on Pluto TV! Stream now. Pay never.

This new campaign follows the success of Pluto TV’s ‘Couch Potato’ creative, which first aired during Super Bowl LVIII and increased Pluto TV’s unaided brand awareness by 15% year over year. The campaign humorously promotes Pluto TV's extensive, cost-free streaming options, proving once again that crime doesn’t pay—nor do its viewers.
