"The SpongeBob Musical" Announces Audition Dates For Roles Of Patrick Star And Mr. Krabs

"Who lives in a Pineapple under the sea?" It could be you! Playbill is reporting that Nickelodeon's upcoming "SpongeBob Squarepants" musical has set audition dates in New York and Florida for the roles of Patrick and Mr. Krabs!

According to a notification on the Actors Equity Associated website, auditions will be held on Friday 29th January 2016 in Orlando, FL, and at a date TBA in late January/early February 2016 in New York City.

Auditions for the chorus of The SpongeBob Musical were held Sept. 15, 2015.

For those unfamiliar with Nickelodeon's hit animated series, Mr. Krabs is SpongeBob's cheapskate boss at the Krusty Krab restaurant. Patrick is SpongeBob's best friend and next door neighbor, a not-excessively-bright Starfish who lives under a rock.

Rehearsals will begin in New York City on Monday 11th April 2016, with out-of-town performances between Tuesday 31st May - Sunday 3rd July 2016. Broadway previews and opening dates have yet to be announced.

Casting is being managed by Telsey + Company. Here are the official role breakdowns:

PATRICK: Male, early 20's- early 30's. ANY ETHNICITY. Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills. Kind and somewhat clueless. A big softie. MUST be very large in stature i.e. tall, round shaped, hefty. Possibly bald or willing to shave head if desired. Any actors auditioning for this role should sing a pop or R&B song that shows off your vocal range. Must have a very strong bari-tenor sound with pop/rock sensibility and excellent comedic timing. PRINCIPAL.

MR. KRABS: Male 40's - 50's. ANY ETHNICITY. Lives his life as a penny-saving, money-grabbing restaurateur. Obsessed and volatile in relationship to his money; tender but misguided in relationship with his Whale daughter. Seeking performer a little more physically round, stocky. A short and stout frame. Any actors auditioning for this role should sing an up-tempo contemporary song that shows off your vocal range but also has a gruffness à la Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, or Gogol Bordello; the songs should be jangly and jaunty, something fun to wail on. Must be a strong Baritenor with excellent comedic timing. PRINCIPAL.

Applicants should apply for an appointment at spongebobbroadway@gmail.com.

Good luck to everyone who auditions for the parts!

Based on Nickelodeon's hit original animated series (Nicktoon) "SpongeBob SquarePants", "The SpongeBob Musical" stage musical will make its world premiere stage debut in 2016 at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre! The production will run performances as a limited engagement from Tuesday 7th June to Sunday 3rd July 2016, with a planned Broadway opening in the 2016-2017 season.

Directed and co-conceived by Steppenwolf veteran Tina Landau ("Bells Are Ringing", "Superior Donuts") with a book by Kyle Jarrow, music supervision by Tony-winning composer Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal", "If/Then"), choreography by Christopher Gattelli ("Hail, Caesar!") and music direction by Julie McBride, the "one of a kind musical event" will feature music and lyrics by "multiple artists", including original songs by prominent musicians, including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Jonathon Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and T.I, with a additional song contributed by David Bowie and additional lyrics by Coulton.

The design team includes scenic and costume design by David Zinn ("Fun Home", "The Flick"), lighting design by Kevin Adams ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch"), projection design by Peter Nigrini ("The Heidi Chronicles") and sound design by Walter Trarbach ("Doctor Zhivago"). It is produced by Nickelodeon.

Nickelodeon describes "The SpongeBob Musical" as: "The end is near. Only one sponge can save the day. But he's going to need help from some of the greatest songwriters in rock and pop music history. The SpongeBob Musical unleashes anarchic absurdity under the sea... and on Broadway. A rousing tale of a simple sea sponge who faces the unfathomable. It's a celebration of unbridled hope, unexpected heroes, and pure theatrical invention."

Nickelodeon revealed the show's opening number, "Bikini Bottom Day", at Nickelodeon's Upfront presentation in February 2015.

"We decided early on that we would only bring SpongeBob to Broadway if we could find someone with a wholly unique take on these beloved characters. When we met Tina, we immediately understood that her vision would not only live up to the expectations of both fans and new audiences, but also to the high-level of artistry and professionalism that are the hallmarks of Broadway. The innovation she is bringing to the staging is matched with an equally fun and surprising set of original songs we've culled from a dream team of SpongeBob fans who happen to be top-flight musical artists, like David Bowie, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper Lady Antebellum and T.I.," stated Russell Hicks, Nickelodeon's President of Content Development and Production.

"The SpongeBob Musical" will be presented as part of the Broadway In Chicago subscription series, with tickets going on sale in October 2015. Group tickets for 10 or more are now on sale by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at (312) 977-1710. Individual tickets for "The SpongeBob Musical" will go on sale at a later date TBA.
